It was unsurprising Hermione was the first to discover her elemental abilities of the six of them. She was 27 at the time and was in between jobs after leaving the ministry of magic.
It was also unsurprising that she was connected with the element of fire.
Her passion for learning/S.P.E.W./everything, ease at which fire spells had come to her growing up (sorry Professor Snape), and her love for a certain red head all hinted at her magical affinity for fire.
It was handy, fire magic.
Fire magic could be gentle and comforting. She could use fire magic start a warm fire in the hearth of her and Ron's home. She could cook her food with fire magic.
But Hermione wasn't gentle.
Hermione was passionate, aggressive, forever fighting for what she believed in.
After some time of meditation and honing her fire magic, she had started a new newspaper. "The Wizarding Star" had become a hit almost immediately. Unlike the Daily Prophet, she would not be bought out or controlled by the ministry. But she would also do her research the proper way, with real legitimate sources, rather then publishing conspiracy stories like The Quibbler.
She had accomplished far more in her two years with this newspaper than in her six with ministry. Countless discrimination cases against muggle-borns, that were normally swept under the rug, were brought the public's notice.
She had helped actually reform Hogwarts and force the administration to hire competent teachers (no more bullying teachers would be allowed either).
She had even discovered a factory using baby house elf labour (normally abandoned by rich purebloods when they had too many house-elves), and with her efforts and the efforts of S.P.E.W., successfully shut it down.
But as with most cases of people challenging the status quo, there were many people who disapproved of her efforts and her newspaper. Some of which who were willing to stop her using any means.
So fire magic was most definitely handy. Nothing scared bullies more than knowing that they were as weak as they truly were. Most didn't even need to be burned to learn their lesson.
She was thirty now. People all around her were asking when she was going "settle down", get married, have children, etc.
But how could she?
How could a fire settle down?
