I walked into the kitchen and took out the ingredients. Sugar, butter, flour, among other things. I started with the flour then got creative and baked from the heart.
People always ask me what's inside. I always tell them that it's more than words can say.
I spent my whole life in the kitchen with my father, now as my job.
Oh, what a mess I'm making, I thought as I walked out of the kitchen with today's special.
"Evie!" Jay called," What's the special pie today?" Jay is an older man of middle eastern descent, a guy's guy, married and hates it when we talk and don't work.
"Deep Shit Blueberry Bacon," I responded. I know it sounds weird but it tastes really good.
"Deep Shit?"
"Dish!" I corrected myself embarrassingly," Deep Dish. Sorry, Jay."
Jay walked into the kitchen while my two friends and coworkers Mal and Jane walked in to help open up. It's the same routine.
"Make the coffee strong enough to chew!" Jay shouts from the kitchen.
"We've got too much to do," I said as Jane handed me my apron.
"Yes, we do. We're always openin' up." Mal said as we all put our aprons on. Mal is the oldest out of the three of us. Married though her husband is sick. She traveled a lot but always ended up home.
"Some things never change," Jane said when we put our name tags on," I like it though." Jane is the youngest out of all of us. Single, loves history and is a little socially awkward.
We all walked out and started working. "Hello, How ya been?" We greet.
"Order Up!" I check the clock when Jane serves her table. Waiting for my break as I haven't been feeling well lately.
"Remember with days like these we can only do the best we can." Mal reminds us.
"Till we do it again,"
"Come on, move it now!" Jay shouts from the kitchen. We put all the pies on display. We serve 27 different types of pie. I made them fresh that morning.
"Thank you. Come again." We say to customers who are leaving.
Jay keeps ringing the bell as Naveen walks in. He's an older guy who owns a lot of business in town. Including this diner.
"Howdy Naveen, what'll it be?" I asked as I walked up to his table.
"It's warm in here. I'm warm." Naveen complains as he does every morning.
"I'll let Jay know."
"My palms are sweatin'. It's so damn warm."
"I hear ya Naveen."
"Ok. Listen up. I want a big piece of your Deep Dish Blueberry Bacon Pie with my scrambled eggs and toast and a tomato on the side, on its own plate."
"No potatoes with that?" I asked.
"Did I say anything about potatoes? I also want coffee. But don't bring that first. Bring me water first with the meal." He kept speaking as I started getting nauseous." Are you ok? Am I making you sick?"
"No, sorry, just feeling a tad bit queasy," I said as I left to go to the bathroom.
I rushed to the bathroom and threw up in the stall. I've been sick for a couple of weeks now. But I'm fine. When I come out Jane and Mal are waiting for me. Jay and Mal are bickering like they always do.
I turn on the water and rinse my mouth out as Mal shouts," Sorry Jay can't hear you. The water's runnin'."
"Get out here! This is the last time I'm saying it." We don't respond and he goes away.
"Are you ok Evie?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just too much coffee." I responded as she blocked my way out. "What are you doing? I've got to get back to my table."
Mal took a pregnancy test out of her apron and says," Evie, time to pee on a stick."
"I don't wanna know."
"Come on honey, you've waited long enough."
"Yea, Evie just do it."
"Ok girls. Enough!"
"I hope you drank enough this morning," Jane says as she's pushing me towards the stall," It's a no or a yes but either way you still gotta take this test."
"Come on sweetie, it's better to know. We'll be with you no matter what." Mal said," Just focus on the negative. Read the instructions."
"Vous pouvez connaître la durée du test—"Jane started before Mal reminded her to speak in English," Oh! Do not enter the test stick into your vagina."
"Thank you, Jane. How'd you ever get yourself into this mess?" Mal asked as I exit the stall and Jane sets a timer.
"Yeah, I thought you don't sleep with your husband much anymore."
"He got me drunk in that stupid red dress. I do stupid things when I drink, like sleep with my husband."
"Oh, I love that red dress the way it sparks looks like an ice skating outfit."
"Stay with us, Jane!"
"Well, maybe his 'machinery' is broken somehow. I mean what if his boys don't swim I mean, wow! Miraculous luck."
"Funny how one night can ruin your whole life."
"It'll all be fine. Maybe there is just one line."
Please be negative, I think to myself. This has been the longest 5 minutes of my life. The timer ends and I look at the test. "Shit."
That was the end of the first chapter. Hoped you liked it.
I will try to update every week.
