Chapter 1

July 31st 1980

Lily Evans - Potter screams and groans on her hospital bed in the thrones of labor as she squeezes the life out of her wincing husband, James's hand bringing in their first child into the world.

She cries with relief when she finally heard the baby cry and smiles when the doctor quickly clears the blood and after letting James cut the core, she wraps the baby up in a green blanket and carefully puts the now clean baby on her chest as they quickly cleaned and healed them up, leaving both parents and babe to bond.

"A boy, a son, he is so beautiful." James said softly as he gently holds the bundle in his arms as he turns to look as his tired wife.

"What should we name him?" He asked.

Lily smiled as she put her finger close to the small fist and chuckles when the strong fist grabs it tightly, but that then she frowns and looks off in the distant for a few minutes, only to come back and say.

"Harry." She said her frown not wavering as she stayed silent her mind in turmoil by what she "saw".

James smiles at that and said, "Harry, a fine name indeed, my beloved." Unaware of her troubled expression as he gently puts the baby down in the small crib next to her bed and says, "I am going to see the guys, be right back."

Lily nods as she looks a the now sleeping infant in his crib and knew that she had to do something to help her son avoid his grim fate.

But she was soon startled out of her thoughts by James and his buddies coming into the room, putting on a forced smile she greeted them tiredly.

Sirius was the first to approach Harry, who was still asleep in his crib, smiling brightly as James came to stand beside him as well, while Peter stood off at the door, wary, while Remus went over to Lily.

"How are you doing?" He whispers to the tired woman.

Lily smiles at the gentle man and said, "I am exhausted, but glad that it's over and he is here finally."

Remus nods and smiles softly as he looks at the little sleeping babe.

"He is as handsome as his Daddy." Sirius remarked with a smile as he slaps James shoulder good naturedly.

"He will make a fine wizard someday." Remus states from his spot by Lily's bedside, as they all muttered in agreement, unaware of Lily's troubles as they soon left the both mother and baby alone to rest, but soon James came back and after his son a kiss on forehead he snuggles next to her bed and was asleep instantly, while Lily sleep was uneasy and filled with nightmares of her son's future life flashing before her eyes.

By the next day she was exhausted and awake as she carefully nurses her son, while James went to go find some food for them to eat before finally being discharged.

While alone Lily was planning on how to keep her son safe and she knew that she had a limited amount of time to do it.

After a eating a simple breakfast, and a quick scan by the Healer, soon both mother and son were cleared to go home.

As she was being led to the floo, she glanced at her now awake child as his blueish green eyes darted around look at everything curiously so innocent and unaware of the troubles facing the wizarding world and that is what Lily intent on protecting as she marched into the fireplace standing next to her husband and with a quick word and drop of gray power they were soon whisked away in a burst of green flames.

Soon she was walking gracefully out of the fireplace gently shushing her wincing son, chuckling when James fall flat on his face coming out of the fireplace.

James sits up and rubs his head, "Me and magical transportations never liked each other." he muttered as he gets up off the floor to go join his wife who was now upstairs in the nursery, where she was putting Harry down for a nap.

He watched with a wide smile as Lily changed and fed the boy and then sang him a gentle lullaby before putting him down in his crib, after that he left to go to his study and do some work that he had been neglecting as Lily's birth date came closer.

Meanwhile Lily stood in the nursery in silence as she watched her son sleeping trying to not cry as she conjured a desk and chair, grabbing some paper and pen as she wrote what would be the most painful letter in her young life.

"Dear Great Grandfather Benjamin Cartwright,

I know that when you find this letter along with my child, it will be confusing and I bet you will have a lot of questions, but the only ones I can right now are that my child's name is Harry and he was born July 31st and that I beg you to take him in and care for him as if he was your own for I fear what will become of him if I just let things happen as they such, but that aside I will say that my son is a wizard and I am asking as his family to protect him.

Your Great Granddaughter

Lily Potter, 1980."

After reading the letter over Lily nods and folds up and with a temporary sticking spell she puts on her son's blanket as he slept and she steps back and starts to runes into the crib while muttering an ancient chant that filled the air with heavy magic as she watched as a bright glow surrounded her son until grew so bright that she had to shield her eyes and as soon as she could open them she was met with an empty crib, without any thought she quickly makes a golem of her son and leaves the nursery, trying to come to terms with what she had done as she lays in her bed silently crying.

Meanwhile it was warm summer night as a breeze blew through the trees as a man in his early 50's with gray white hair and weathered face and kind brown eyes was sitting on the porch of his home smoking from his pipe relaxing.

Only to be alarmed when he heard what sounded like a baby crying in the woods, so he quickly sets his pipe aside and gets up, drawing his gun in case of any bandits coming out of the bushes as he walked the beaten path, only to come upon a crying newborn, in nothing but a onesie and green blanket and a letter attached to it.

Without much thought he scooped up the child shushing it softly as he reads the letter, his expression going from confusion, shock, concern, anger and then finally acceptances as he looked at the now cooing infant in his arms and said with a gentle smile "Welcome to the Ponderosa, Harry, I am Ben Cartwright your "Papa."
