Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds and Pokemon
We Could Be The Best Team of All Time
By Lucky_Ladybug
Notes: The characters from the shows and games are not mine. Other characters and the story is! This is a direct sequel to Take Me On a Journey and explores the premise of the two series existing in the same verse. It's post-series for 5Ds, and Radley is a nice guy, the way I honestly see him. He and Kalin have become very close. It's based more on the Pokemon games than the anime, but the anime definitely has an influence too.
Chapter One
"Eevee-vee! Eevee!"
The room was filled with a chorus of adorable Eevee calls, trills, and chirps. As Radley cleaned up the diner after another long day of serving customers, the three sweet animals ran around at his feet, under tables, and wrestled and played together.
"Guys, you're underfoot," he lightly scolded.
Evie looked up, warbling in understanding, and led her friends over by the jukebox to play.
Radley laughed and shook his head. "What a crew," he said with fondness as he leaned across the counter and clasped his hands. He loved them all so much. Evie was his, while Evan belonged to Kalin. The third Eevee, Isla, was Scotch's. They were together almost all of every day, except when Radley and Kalin were at their home and Scotch was with Biff at theirs. They really were inseparable friends.
Kalin came over with a smile and leaned on the other side. "They're happy," he remarked.
"I'm glad," Radley said. "Isla is definitely behaving herself more lately."
Of the three, Isla was certainly the most prone to get into things she shouldn't. She loved to play and couldn't get enough, and Evie and Evan were often stuck trying to get all of them out of trouble. But Isla had a sad side too; she had been deeply affected by something in her past and was terrified of Pokeballs and being abandoned. Scotch showered her with much love and affection and assurances each day to try to help her. She was very responsive to the love, but still couldn't make herself get into a Pokeball even long enough to be registered.
"Maybe that means she's settling in more?" Kalin suggested.
"I hope so," Radley said. "Scotch was really worried when he realized how badly hurt she was." He smiled a bit. "I think this has really been helping him, having someone to look after."
"Isla adores him too," Kalin said.
"I hope she doesn't still fear he'll leave her, but I know wounds like those go deep," Radley said. "It's hard not to be afraid when it's happened before and made such an impact on one's life."
Kalin frowned. "You've been abandoned so many times by loved ones, including me. Are you still afraid of it happening again?"
Radley sighed and stared off into the distance. "Yes and no. I'm afraid of it, yes. Especially from my biological family. But . . . I don't really believe it's a problem, at least not from you and the Bunch." He smiled. "I have complete faith and trust in you."
"Good," Kalin said. "I'll never leave you again."
Radley reached over and grasped Kalin's hand. "I know."
". . . If Isla is still scared, what if you talked to her?" Kalin suggested.
Radley paused. "I could try," he said. "I don't wanna bring it up if she seems to be doing okay now, but if she gets upset again, I'd be happy to talk to her."
"And she probably will get upset again," Kalin said. "We both know pain like that doesn't go away easily."
"Yeah," Radley sighed. He straightened. "And you know what else I keep thinking about? That kooky loco song of Evie's original owner."
"Why would you want to?" Kalin deadpanned.
Radley smirked. "I don't. It just comes back to me off and on and I have to think about it. It just sounds too random to be, well, random. There could be some deeper meaning to it."
"Maybe," Kalin grunted. "Or maybe her family is just weird."
Radley laughed. "Yeah, that's possible too."
On the floor, the Eevees paused to listen to the conversation.
"That song is pretty weird," Evan said. "Do you know if it has any real meaning?"
"I was just little," Evie said. "I don't know."
"What's so weird about it?" Isla wondered. Being from Galar, she spoke with a British accent.
"It talks about caves and bats and eating food and death," Evan said. "Did it really comfort anyone?"
Evie shrugged. "Just because it was familiar, I guess."
"Familiar isn't always great," Isla said. "Unless it's play!" She pounced and they were soon rolling on the floor again.
That was a normal scene and conversation between the three. Isla would always quickly switch the subject any time she said something serious. Evie was too innocent to fully understand and Evan understood and just let Isla have her privacy.
Radley chuckled as he and Kalin watched them romp. "I wonder what they talk about," he mused.
"When they understand everything we say, they probably talk like we do," Kalin grunted.
"Probably," Radley agreed. "When Prinna translated for them, both Evie and Evan said pretty deep things to us."
"And Isla . . . didn't," Kalin intoned.
"She prefers to talk about play," Radley agreed. "Although Prinna said that was because she was trying not to think about the sorrows she had gone through in her life and didn't want to talk about them."
Scotch bounded in from the kitchen, somehow holding four plates of assorted vegetable slices. He set three at the table by the jukebox. "Okay, guys!" he chirped. "It's late-night snack time!"
All three Eevees exclaimed happily and leaped up to the table, sitting on the chairs as they munched their food.
Scotch grinned, placing the fourth plate on the counter. "And here's for us!" he said grandly.
"Thanks," Radley smiled, taking a carrot stick and dipping it in the dressing Scotch had provided on the humans' plate.
Kalin nodded in thanks too and took a cauliflower.
"I'm thinking of taking Isla to the pet spa in the City tomorrow," Scotch said. "Will you guys come too?"
"Sure," Radley chuckled. "Evie loves it."
The female Eevees cheered.
"Evan doesn't seem to have any serious objections to it," Kalin grunted. "But mostly I think he likes doing what the girls are doing so he can be with them."
"Eevee," Evan said in agreement, his mouth full of tomato.
"That's a legit reason!" Scotch said. "Do you think we'll end up with any other Eevees around here?"
Radley chuckled. "It's hard to say. Do you mean finding more in the canyons, or some wandering in, or eggs?"
"Anything would be epic!" Scotch said. "I'm sure Isla would love another Eevee right in our house!"
Kalin smirked. "I'm not sure Biff would love it. They might run around at all hours of the night when he'd be trying to sleep."
"I don't think so!" Scotch said. "Isla always wants to get in bed with me. It's so cute!"
Radley smiled. "That is pretty cute," he agreed.
"She's really happy being with us," Scotch said.
"And I've heard you're amazing at taking care of her," Radley said.
Scotch blinked. "Yeah? Biff said so?"
"He has, and Isla has too," Radley pointed out. "She wouldn't be as happy as she is if she wasn't happy at home."
". . . Yeah, that's true!" Scotch grinned. "I really try my best. I love having her here!"
Isla looked up. "Eevee!" she exclaimed.
"And the City's getting used to us coming over," Radley mused. "I wonder if Pokemon are gradually starting to come back."
"I think I saw a Magnet Pokemon fly by near Yusei's garage," Kalin grunted.
"Eevees usually like urban areas too, I think," Radley said. "Maybe someday we'll see some when we're there."
"That would be epic!" Scotch gushed.
Evie warbled happily. More friends!
"I wonder if Shiny Pokemon are real," Scotch said.
Kalin gave him a blank look. "What?"
"Color variants," Radley explained. "Most of the time the colors are a good contrast with the common colors, like a Shiny Eevee is cream-colored."
Scotch nodded enthusiastically. "The ruff is silver!"
"Is that why they're Shiny?" Kalin grunted.
Radley laughed. "Honestly, I don't know why they call it that. They don't literally seem shiny to me."
"If they are real, they're probably rare," Kalin said.
"You're right," Radley agreed. "I think they can only be found with a lot of searching in the games, or if you're lucky, you can breed them every now and then."
Scotch looked to the Eevees. "I wonder if Evie's owner bred any?!"
"Eevee," Evie said. She didn't remember any cream ones.
Kalin grunted. "If she did, I'm sure Rebecca got them sold for a high price."
"At least she let us keep Evie," Radley said.
"Eventually," Kalin said flatly. The way Rebecca had wanted to take Evie for a profit still grated on him. Evie had run away when her old owner had died, not wanting to be sold off with the rest of the Eevees and hoping to find her own person. She had chosen Radley, and after Team Rocket had interfered and kept them apart for years, they had finally reunited shortly before running into Rebecca, a relative of Evie's original owner. She had acted like she would push for Evie to come with her before relenting upon hearing some of Evie's story and seeing how the thought of being torn from Radley was traumatizing her.
"Did she really make you pay for her?!" Scotch exclaimed. "It wasn't your fault Evie ran away! And it was years ago!"
"Well, she didn't turn down the check I wrote later, at least," Radley remarked. "But it's alright. I was more than willing to pay for Evie if that was what it took to keep her."
"Eevee-vee-vee!" Evie said in adoring cheerfulness.
Radley smiled. "That should finally cover all our bases. We have the Pokeball, the collar and I.D. tag, and paying the former owner's next of kin. No one can say I can't have you now, pretty girl."
"Especially since Pokemon are a thing and they can't just say they're wild animals!" Scotch said.
"Which is definitely a relief," Kalin said.
"And as far as Pokemon go, Eevees seem to be among the most domesticated," Radley remarked.
"And that's awesome!" Scotch said.
Biff came out of the kitchen, a dish towel slung over his shoulder. "Okay, everything's put away and cleaned up now," he announced. "It's late, Scotch. We should get Isla and go."
"Right!" Scotch ate one more carrot and straightened. "We love you guys! We'll see you tomorrow!" he chirped.
"I think we're ready to go too, aren't we?" Radley looked to Kalin, who nodded. "Let's all ride back together, as usual."
"We might as well," Kalin said. They all lived on the same street in groups of two.
The Eevees gulped down the rest of their food and were also ready to leave. They wagged their fluffy tails as Radley came to collect their plates and petted all of them.
"Let's take care of these plates really quick," he said.
"Eevee!" Evie chirped.
They waited while their humans washed and dried the plates.
"I'd like to see a Shiny Eevee!" Evie said. "Have you ever seen any?"
"I saw one once," Evan said. "She was owned by some guy who was really pampering her at a spa."
"That's right, we get to go to the spa tomorrow!" Isla exclaimed.
Evie didn't notice how Isla had slid right over her question. "It'll be so fun!" She jumped around. "Maybe we can see more kitties and doggies too! And we can visit Yusei and Antinomy and Monkey!" Monkey was Antinomy's Siamese cat.
"You're more excited about seeing people than anything else," Evan noted.
"Well, of course!" Evie said innocently. "I love getting pretty at the spa, but sharing it with you two and everyone else is what makes it really fun!"
Evan smiled a bit. Evie's sweetness always cheered him up. Isla seemed to appreciate it too.
The humans were coming back now. Each Eevee exclaimed in delight as their chosen person picked them up and held them close. They all headed out of the diner together and to their motorcycles. The Eevees loved taking rides every day and night to and from the diner and they chorused with excitement as they rode off into the night.
Radley laughed. "I wonder if people can actually hear you guys over the roar of the motors."
Evie peeked out of his securely-zipped jacket. "Eevee!"
"I wouldn't be surprised," Kalin said.
On their street, Radley and Kalin and Evie and Evan bade Goodbye to Scotch, Biff, and Isla before heading inside their home. The two Eevees hopped down and ran around the living room, hyper and happy.
"You'd better get all that energy out, because we're going to bed soon," Radley chuckled.
"Do they ever fully get all the energy out?" Kalin deadpanned.
"Sometimes it doesn't seem like it," Radley said. "But they sure seem to crash when it's time."
Kalin took out his phone. "I'll let Yusei know we're coming in tomorrow," he said.
"Oh good. Yes, you should do that," Radley said. "He might already have plans with work." He smiled. "It's nice that the pet spa allows walk-ins, though. Scotch likes to go in on a whim."
Kalin nodded. "The Eevees like it too."
"I'm glad there hasn't been any trouble taking them places," Radley said. "I hate to say it, but Team Rocket actually did all of us some good. When their operations in the canyons were shut down, it made national headlines. Now everyone is realizing Pokemon are real again."
"And the Eevees are celebrities," Kalin remarked.
"They've all been getting fanmail," Radley chuckled. "Fully deserved, I must say."
"Eevee-vee!" Evie declared. She definitely loved it.
"All the Eevees' stories touched people's hearts," Radley mused. "The little Eevee who thought people only cared about evolving and didn't love Eevees for themselves and finally found his forever person. . . . The big Eevee who was brought here from Galar during a sickening experiment and also just wanted to be loved. . . ."
"And the little Eevee who found her chosen person and was forcefully separated from him for years until destiny finally brought them together again," Kalin finished with a smile.
Evie ran over and rubbed Radley's leg. He laughed and bent down, picking her up.
"Yeah, we've really had a time of it, haven't we?" he said.
Kalin reached for Evan as he walked over too. "The peace since then has been nice. I wish it would last."
Evan snuggled him. "Eevee. . . ."
"I sure wish it would," Radley agreed. "But knowing how it goes, I'm sure something else will go wrong sooner or later. Hopefully at least later."
Kalin nodded. "For now, let's get ready for bed and hope for the best."
Radley carried Evie to the pet couch. "Yeah."
Soon everyone was peacefully in bed, lost in dreams. Evie's was very strange. Her tail swished as the scenes played out. She was with her original owner, being carried as a baby. The woman was singing her eerie song and all the Eevees were following her. They went down some old steps to the basement and she pressed a wall panel decorated with paintings of Zubats. The wall swung open, revealing what looked like a stone room. As she spoke softly to Evie, she set the little Pokemon down and Evie walked curiously into the room. A cream-colored Eevee warbled a greeting.
Eviesnapped awake with a start. Next to her, Evan blinked sleepily. "What is it?"
"I just remembered something!" Evie exclaimed.
