A-Asthma
Takes place during: Season 3
(Dean's P.O.V)
If you asked me there was no better feeling than running through the woods at night during a humid summer, one which evidently would be my last, chasing after the supernatural.
I could hear the wolf ahead, as well as Sammy's heavy footsteps right behind me, and although most would argue that this exact interaction was not on most peoples to do list, I felt exhilarated to be hunting.
Gun in hand I led the chase, as the werewolf ran into the trap Sam and I had been working on all day. Now as we passed the dead oak tree I knew that for once it would work, for once a hunt would be simple and easy, hell maybe we'd be done in time to head to a bar and check out the ladies.
I smiled at the thought before pushing further ahead, unaware that my brother's footsteps had become distant, and slower.
(Sam's P.O.V)
I could feel myself slowing now but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get enough air into my lungs to continue.
Dean was so far ahead at this point that I didn't even bother yelling for him, plus there was still the werewolf to worry about, my priorities didn't matter at the moment.
I kept running but now the tightness I'd felt in my chest was worse, way worse and my breaths came out harsh and weezy.
I gripped at my chest and felt my heart rate hammering louder and louder, my ear drums echoing as I slowed my pace to a complete stop at this point gasping for air.
What the hell was wrong with me, this had never been a problem before, was I out of shape?
I couldn't remember ever struggling so badly just to run, and even when building that trap in this heat I never felt like this.
I took as deep of a breath as I could and continued jogging to where Dean had gone, hopeful that everything was going to plan and that my absence wasn't going to bite Dean in the ass if he needed back up.
(Dean's P.O.V)
The trap worked perfectly..
The werewolf ran for the bait laid out, triggering the rope to fall, trapping him.
I came to a halt admiring Sam and I's handiwork before making quick work of the creature shooting it through the heart twice for good measure.
Ahh the feeling a good simple hunt gives you cannot be topped, I said this much and turned behind me where I expected Sam to be standing, except he wasn't.
My heart stopped for a second as I scanned the area I was sure I'd just come from and soon I was back to running except with a different goal in mind.
"SAAAAM"! I screamed my pace quickening at the sudden loss of my baby brother.
Where was he, I could have sworn he was right behind me the whole time.
I could feel the pangs of fear running through my veins as every second ticked by without sight of Sammy until the faint sound of footsteps just ahead could be heard.
I burst through the trees in pursuit of the sound before breathing a sigh of relief.
Sammy was there, jogging slowly but steadily towards me.
"Oh God Sam, where have you been?"? I all but shouted, sounding a lot angrier than I felt.
"Sorry…..I….got…winded". Was his raspy response.
I laughed.
"You Mr. I go running for fun, got winded, wow never thought I'd see the day, looks like you're going soft there Sammy". I joked, slapping Sam on the back as we both made our way back to the Impala.
"Very funny…..Dean".
(Sam's P.O.V)
The walk back did little to steady my breathing, if anything it got worse, and I was starting to panic.
I couldn't breath, I couldn't god damn breath and although I was trying to put up a front for Dean I knew he was beginning to show signs of worry.
My steps faltered for a second and my vision blurred at the edges as I gasped for air. Dean turned towards me with his serious face coming out.
"Sammy what's wrong, here sit down take a breather".
If only.
I moved aside as Dean tried to steady me into a seated position, all I wanted was to get back into the Impala and go home so I could take an advil or something, maybe I was coming down with a cold.
"I'm…..fine…just..need…to…catch..my…breath". I responded, my breathing hole seemingly as small as a coin.
"Yeah, but you've been doing that for the last 20 minutes, Sammy I think we out to take a break or something".
I shook my head, as my vision blurred even more.
"I… don't….. know what's…. wrong… with.. me Dean I… I can't…..breath".
My words came out raspy and slow as I fought for air, but still my body ached for more than I was taking in.
Dean's concern grew 10 folds in 3 seconds.
"Jesus Christ Sammy, I think you're having an asthma attack".
I turned to him like he was insane since I don't have asthma but then again what other explanation was there.
(Deans P.O.V)
Sammy's face was pale and his movement sluggish as his breathing worsened and I knew then that we were in trouble.
"Okay, okay, don't panic Sammy where about 5 minutes from the car, we'll get their and than I'll drive us to the hospital, we'll get it sorted out okay"
Sam nodded, not even protesting a visit to the hospital which was not a good sign as I helped him stumble his way through this dark forest.
All of a sudden I hated the forest, hated the feeling of rushing through it at night, all I wanted right now was for Sammy to be okay.
I could feel Sammy's harsh, shallow breaths against my face as I all but carried him, his weight relying on my weakening strength more and more.
"D everything….blurry". Sam mumbled in between gasps of air.
I knew then and there that Sam was closer to passing out than not, because it wasn't often that he called me D rather than Dean.
Eventually we broke free of the forest in sight of the Impala and I smiled knowing that at least we would be making more progress with me behind the wheel.
I steadied Sam into the passenger seat as his head lolled to the side, and a sudden flurry of panic nearly consumed me before I started the car.
The drive to the hospital would take roughly 12 minutes if I gunned it all the way there and if we didn't hit any red lights, but currently not even a tornado would deter me from getting there and fast.
(Sam's P.O.V)
The ride to the hospital was a complete blur of worried Dean, and then road rage Dean, and the constant effort of fighting for air.
It seemed that I faded in and out of consciousness throughout most of it though because all of a sudden I was awake in a hospital bed and I could breath.
I turned to my left where Dean was currently sitting, a smile coming to his face as he noticed my motion.
"Hey, how are you feeling their Sam"?
Dean got up and walked over to me as I tried to sit up and meet his gaze.
"Better, I can breathe now if that's what you're asking".
Dean frowned before passing me a glass of water which I drank slowly.
"The doctor said you probably have weather induced asthma".
I sighed.
"So I can't breathe only in the summer but in the winter I'm good to go great".
Dean chuckled.
"Yeah well, we're prepared now".
Dean held up a blue inhaler marked with my name.
I shrugged.
"Never knew I had it in the first place, so we weren't exactly unprepared as much as we just didn't know".
"Yeah well now we do, and trust me this will never happen again, Sammy I got 1 for me 1 for you, 1 in the car, and 1 extra".
I shook my head.
"Think that's a little overkill Dean".
"Not when it comes to you Sam, I'm never going through that again".
I smiled.
"Yeah me neither".
