Disclaimer: I own nothing except the deranged thoughts running around rampant in my brain.
A/N: Ok here is a fic that I have been working on for almost the last 6 months. Again, it is finished...as of 1:00 this morning and I am planning to update twice a week, once on the weekend and once during the week. I can't commit to certain days. While it is a Jareth and Sarah fic I don't write anything else this one was a bit harder to write and I have had a love/hate relationship with it.
This fic was inspired by a #MemeMonday post from the LFFL group (whom I love and don't know what I would do without) from Aug. 23rd:
When you were seven, you held
a fake wedding by the swings
with a kid you met at the park.
You never saw your childhood
'spouse" again after that day.
Today you received a letter
summoning you to a foreign
country... where your wedding to
the heir to the throne twenty
years ago is seen as valid.
So, my brain took this and I planned a simple six-chapter fic. Then I got an idea that would not let me go. I tried to ignore it but it would not let me go. So I took the idea to a few friends for advice. I would now like to thank Angelglass and RMBiehl for their awesome advice. Both of them advised me to give a clear explanation and warning here with the first chapter, so here goes.
1. I do not condone or will ever write about incest.
2. Jareth and Sarah are my favorite ship and will always have them together...though there are times that it takes them a while.
That being said in the first few chapters (1-5) Jareth meets and sleeps with Sarah's mother. This could have been a surprise but I was advised to put it out there at the beginning. Now I want everyone to know that there is no way that Jareth could be Sarah's bio dad...see point 1. In this story, Jareth does sleep with Linda but she is already pregnant when they meet. That is important because Linda being pregnant with Sarah is the reason that Jareth will become involved with her. I could have let this part off, but I really think that it adds to the story.
If this part bothers you skip his interactions with Linda. It won't keep you from enjoying the story.
So here is my perceived 6 chapters turned into a 46-chapter monstrosity.
Special thanks to my beta RMBiehl you rock getting me through this thing it has been a heck of a few months.
I hope you all enjoy it. Please leave a review I would like to hear what you think.
On silent wings, the snowy white and almost golden-colored barn owl flew over a small town. He looked down on the streets, houses, and people in the sleepy village. The owl flew high enough to stay out of sight of those on the ground, but his avian eyes could see all. The stealth kept him from drawing the attention of being a nocturnal bird active during the day.
Jareth, King of the Goblins, loved the freedom that he enjoyed in his owl form. He made a point of using this form often wherever he might be, but unless he was confronting a wisher, this was the form that he took exclusively when he went Above.
He had just concluded his business with the latest wisher. He shook his feathered head as he thought of her, a spoiled girl who had wished away her twin sister simply because she was tired of sharing everything, including her birthday which was only days away. The eight-year-old refused to run. She considered being offered her dreams as an unexpected bonus. She had thanked him, and now the Goblin Kingdom had a new citizen. He would not be able to dawdle long as he needed to deal with his newest acquisition, but the summer day was just too good to pass up. He would stay just a bit longer, and then he would return across the veil.
Catching a current sent him towards a small park. He saw a small stream that meandered through the idyllic setting with a footbridge arching over it in one place before it terminated in a small duck pond complete with swans. He spied a tall stone obelisk near the footpath intermittently lined with benches where people were gathered. Some alone, and some in groups and families. The sight of them caused him to decide to perch on the stone structure so he was able to see these families enjoying each other. It helped him to distance himself from the girl who took her family and her twin for granted.
He had only just landed on the pointed top of the obelisk when he felt it. It was something that was completely familiar, but wholly unexpected in this place…magic. Where he was from, magic was plentiful, so much so that the feel of it was easily ignored unless it was needed. Here in the human realm, however, the feeling was pure, clear, and crisp. It was not unheard of for magic to exist here. In fact, there were some humans long ago that were skilled in the use of magic, but as those had passed on, the practice of using magic was lost to time. So, for him to feel magic here, it meant that one of the humans present in the park had the gift, and the pull of it was very strong. It called to him.
Jareth used his heightened owl senses to scan those below to find the one that was radiating the magic. It was then that he saw her. She was sitting on a bench, a book in her hand. She carelessly reached her hand up to flip her long dark hair off her shoulder, and he watched it fall down over the back of the bench, it was so long. When she paused in her reading to look around, he saw green eyes under impeccably groomed eyebrows. Upon seeing them, Jareth felt his breath hitch, and his eyes became rounder if that were possible in this particular form.
He had visited the above enough over his very long life that he had long believed that he was above being surprised by humans. His interactions with them were not limited to those in his official capacities as Goblin King. Over the centuries, he had his share of dalliances with both men and women in the Above. He had met his share of beautiful women, but there was something about this one.
She was lovely to be sure, with her long dark hair, and dark green eyes. She sat with an almost regal air. Had he known women more attractive? Without a doubt, but he had never sensed the intensity of magic that she was giving off. It intrigued him. He stayed for a while more just watching her as she paged through her book. Eventually, he needed to go to attend to the wished-away child waiting in his castle. With a cry, he left his perch and flew leaving the world Above behind as he crossed the veil back home.

Flying directly into the throne room, Jareth quickly transformed, appearing back in the goblin regalia that he customarily wore for his official duties. He stood in front of the throne where a blonde woman reclined. She wore a pair of black tight-fitting leggings, a white flowing silk shirt that even laced up was open halfway down her chest, a black leather waistcoat, and black knee-high leather boots topped off the outfit. He raised an eyebrow at her and smirked, "Raiding my closet again Gina? Haven't you enough clothing in your own closet?"
"Well Jar, since you insisted, I yet again take your place here, I thought that I should look the part. I have to say that I can make even this look good." She held her arms out gesturing down at herself.
"My wardrobe is impeccable, and always in the height of fashion," Jareth retorted. "Gina, where is the child that the goblins brought?" Jareth's smirk disappeared. He hated when the wished-a-ways were older. It was so much easier when they were babies or toddlers.
Gina stood up and gestured to the pit in the center of the throne room. In the center, a small girl was giggling, surrounded by goblins from the castle hoard. Her peals of laughter rang through the throne room, making him feel worse. Her brown hair in beaded braids clicked as she shook her head. The sound delighted the goblins and caused them to dance and jump more frantically, to the delight of the little girl.
Jareth sighed and walked down into the pit. The goblins, upon seeing their king, parted. The look on his face told them that even though there was a human child in the throne room this would not be a "Magic Dance" day. The girl, noticing a change in the behavior of her playmates, turned around and came face to face with the Goblin King.
Her mouth dropped open but no sound came out, and her wide eyes spoke of her sudden fear. Jareth dropped to one knee in front of her, and as his body lowered, he heard the creak of leather and realized that he was still wearing goblin armor. Quickly, he produced a crystal and dropped it. Immediately his clothing had changed into one that was identical to what Gina was dressed in, with the exception of a bit more ruffle and lace on the silk shirt he wore. The sudden change in his appearance caused the girl to begin backing away, only to bump into a goblin in her blind retreat that sent her falling backward.
Jareth produced another crystal, which when he threw it stopped the girl's backward momentum, essentially freezing her in midair. He stood and walked over and secured the girl before restarting time. Finding herself suddenly in the arms of a strange man who changed clothes in an instant, and somehow moved from kneeling to standing and grabbing her mid-fall in the blink of an eye, caused the girl to find her voice, and she used it to scream long and loud.
"Good going, you're Majesty," called Gina from above them. She could not hide her smile.
Jareth glared at the woman and walked over to the edge of the pit and sat the girl on the floor of the throne room, her feet dangling into the pit where he still stood. He took her hands and looked into her eyes. The girl had stopped screaming but was breathing heavily.
"Hello, my name is Jareth, and you have nothing to fear here." His voice was smooth as honey. "What is your name sweetheart?" He already knew it of course, but also knew that this might be the best approach with her.
"Jazmine," she whispered. "Why am I here? I don't remember much. I was," she shook her head. "I was at home, and then suddenly I am here, and those little guys were singing and dancing about a babe with the power. They are funny." As Jazmine spoke her voice became stronger.
"You are here because you are very special," Jareth told her. "I know that this seems strange and scary, but I promise that you are quite safe here. Jareth turned and put his hands on the lip of the pit and with a graceful jump was seated next to Jazmine.
"The goblins can scare some people. I know how special you are since you did not find them so." Jareth smiled at the girl who seemed to be recovering from her shock.
"They might look a little funny, but my Mamma always says 'Don't judge a book by its cover.'" Jareth's heart lurched at the way she sounded when she mentioned her mother. "But they are fun. I like to sing and dance too."
"What other things do you like to do, Jazmine?" Jareth asked her gently.
For quite a while, Jazmine talked with Jareth and told him about her school, and friends. Gina sat down on the throne once again and listened to the girl too. Jareth made note of the things that she told him, many of them were so ingrained in her psyche that they would survive once her change was complete.
After a while Jareth noticed Jazmine starting to fade. She was not replying so readily and was even starting to lean against his side. The Underground's magic was beginning to affect the girl, and soon the transformation would start. Mercifully, she would be asleep and would stay so until it was over.
When Jazmine failed to answer his latest question, Jareth looked down and saw that she was indeed asleep. He gathered her into his arms, and then magically rose to his feet while carrying the girl. He walked to the transformation chamber hidden within his room of stairs. She would be moved to another room before she woke once it was finished. Due to her age, it could be a while. Jareth gave her one last look laying there and returned to his throne room.
The woman was still sitting on his throne when he returned. This time she stood and moved so that he might sit on his throne himself. "Was it horrible?" she asked. "The girl seemed healthy and well adjusted."
"Not in the way you think Gina," Jareth replied sitting down. With a distracted wave, a comfortable chair appeared next to Gina and she sat too. "It was the girl's sister who wished her away out of jealousy. I will never understand why humans do not seem to appreciate those close to them, especially their family."
"Now Jareth she was an impetuous child," she raised a hand when he was about to interrupt. "And her rash decision has permanent and serious consequences. I do believe that it will haunt her when she is old enough to realize what she has done. In a way, I feel sorry for her." She then smiled at the still brooding king. "Besides, not everyone is kind and wise enough to appreciate their siblings like myself," she finished with a smirk of her own.
"Yes, Gina, you are the most appreciative little sister. I was certainly blessed." The sarcasm was thick in Jareth's reply. With a twist of his wrist, he produced two crystals. One, he tossed to his sister, and when she caught it, she suddenly was holding a glass with a double pour of amber whisky in it. The crystal in Jareth's hand became a matching glass. They saluted each other and took a sip at the same time.
"So, what took you so long? When you were summoned, I thought that my little sojourn as your stand-in was over." Gina took another sip from her glass.
"Why would you ever think that? I wasn't planning to return to my kingly duties for at least another two days. I certainly was still enjoying myself." Jareth looked down at his sister.
"Look, unlike mother, I don't care if you tell me all the sorted details of your hedonistic pleasure cruise, but I would assume that whichever bimbos you were "entertaining" would have gotten distracted and lost interest after thirteen whole hours," Gina smirked back at him.
"Well, Regina dear, the twit chose not to run, so I would have been gone less than two hours total, I can guarantee that even in my absence Skye, Giselle, and Vivi would certainly stay motivated and interested," Jareth smirked back at her.
"So…." Gina made a palm-up gesture with both of her hands.
"So…" Jareth mimicked both her words and gestures.
"So…why are you here with me rather than being with, or in one, or all of them." Gina made a face.
"Are you actually objecting to my finding pleasure with a willing woman, or two, or three, or…" he trailed off suggestively.
"Seriously? No, I care not what you do or whom you do it with or to. I am no innocent, and honestly, I have done things that might surprise even you…on second thought," she stopped realizing just who it was she was talking to. "Jareth I just thought that at your age and with Mother and Father breathing down your neck you would be looking for someone that could be your queen." Jareth made a face at this.
"Gina, I get enough of this from our parents, I will not listen to it from you in my own castle." He tried to shut her down, but his sister would have none of it.
"Jareth, you are not just Goblin King, which honestly you have single-handedly elevated to quite the sought-after crown, but you are crown prince, and as such, you are expected and required to choose a mate and produce an heir. Two would be preferable." Regina finished her glass and held it up to be refilled by a snap of her brother's fingers.
"Mate…as in bonded…no. All that is required is that I find a wife. A simple handfasting is enough. To be bonded is far too much commitment for me, and don't go throwing around the L-word. Most of our kind doesn't believe it exists, I am well aware of it but I flatly refuse to let anyone have that kind of power over me." Jareth dismissed the whole idea with a wave of his hand.
"Whether just wife or mate, you need to find someone suitable and none of your usual itch scratchers can be called that. Also, I would hope that you could find someone that I can at least stand to be around for more than two seconds." Gina settled herself down with her fresh drink.
"Yes, Gina, we will make the future queen of the Goblin Kingdom all about you," Jareth replied sardonically.
"Hey, maybe I should choose your future bride. I certainly can't do worse than the women you are and have been involved with. But you never answered me, why are you here and not back with your bimbos?" Regina remembered that she had asked a question before the conversation became sidetracked.
Jareth refilled his own glass and sighed. "Gina, when I was Above, I found a woman," he began.
"Jareth, the Above is crawling with women and men for that matter. You have been aware of this; I know since there are more than a few you have kept on the line when you feel like something a bit more exotic than you find here in the Underground." She was about to start reciting some of the human lovers he had taken over the many centuries, but Jareth stopped her.
"Gina, you don't understand. I was not looking for someone. As you pointed out, I have a variety pack waiting for me to return to them." Jareth smirked once more. "I was drawn by magic."
"So, it is someone from the Underground that chose to live Above or a descendant of such. We both know that they are out there," Gina shrugged it off.
"No Gina, it was not Underground magic. It was wild magic. I have never experienced or even heard of it still surviving in the Above. I was drawn to the magic, and then I saw her." His eyes glazed over as he got lost in memory.
"She must have been some kind of woman. So, you took the time for a quick dalliance before you returned?" Jareth's head being turned by a pretty girl or boy when he was Above that led him to stay for a liaison with them before he returned home was not unusual.
"I haven't even spoken to her. I was in my owl form that I favor in the Above. The magic drew me, and I saw her in the park. She was quite lovely, not a girl but a woman. Young to be for sure, but definitely a woman. She was beautiful with long, nearly black hair, and dark eyes in a most unusual green color. She was there on a bench reading a book, alone, but she seemed comfortable, almost regal." Jareth trailed off again.
"She must be something. I have never seen you gush over some woman before. So, when are you going to go back Above and seduce her?" Gina was not impressed.
"I honestly don't know…Regina I don't know if it is about her or the magic she obviously possesses, or a combination of both." Jareth downed his second drink.
"Well, I for one cannot wait until mother hears about this. She will head there herself to get a look at the mortal that turned her firstborn's head. Especially if mother thinks she might be the one." Gina could not resist another jab at her brother.
"No. You will not breathe a word of this to mother. She will be here in an instant, and I will hear no end to it. Particularly if she starts prattling about that ridiculous prophecy. I refuse to let outside forces decide things about my life. I am the Goblin King, and I am in control of my life and everything in it." Jareth ground the words out, and Regina found herself agreeing to it.
"Well, my original question still remains: are you planning to return to your flock of floozies, or are my services no longer required?" Regina asked to hope that he would choose to stay and moon over this new mortal. As much as she loved her brother, and while she did not have a problem with goblins per se after more than a week, she was ready to go somewhere…anywhere that was goblin free.
"I think I will return to the lovely ladies that I am sure must be waiting for me with bated breath," Jareth replied with a smirk.
"What about your newest acquisition, who is at this moment sleeping while undergoing the change? I may be standing in for you, but only you can oversee them after." Regina reminded him.
"Keep an eye on her for me, Gina. If she shows signs of reanimating after the transition, contact me. At her age, I anticipate it will take the better part of a week until she is conscious. Inform the healer of her presence, and she will check on her to see that there are no complications." Jareth knew she was aware of all of this, but felt the need to remind her all the same.
"Jareth you forget that this is not the first time that I have stood in for you while you were off for one reason or another. I am well aware of the drill by now." Regina resigned herself to another couple of days of being in charge of the Goblin Kingdom.
"I know I can count on you, dear sister. I will see you when I return the day after tomorrow." And with a toss of crystal, he was gone.
Regina stood, and the chair he had conjured disappeared. She shook her head. Only her brother could be waxing poetry about some woman, and in the next breath decide to go back to his mini orgy. May the gods help whoever decides to marry him. Laughing to herself, she settled back onto his throne and summoned a goblin to fetch the healer. Waiting for her to appear she lounged back and waited for the goblins to realize that their king was once again gone from the castle, and the party that was interrupted would once again resume.
A/N: Just setting up what is to come. Thanks for reading. Please review.
