Chapter 1: Moving to Africa

It was another bright sunny day in Africa.

The birds were tweeting high above the pure blue sky as giraffes, elephants, hippos and various other animals went on doing their usual routines.

A safari car vehicle rode on the road of the savannah as it passed the peaceful woodland.

The passengers inside the vehicle was a man and his only daughter.

They were Jonathan and Lyra Crewe.

Jonathan was a man in his 30s with chestnut maroon hair, blue eyes and fair skin. He wore a light blue long-sleeved button shirt with the sleeves folded into cuffs, black pants and dark brown boots.

Lyra was a young girl with a diminished height, vermillion red hair in two queues that trail behind her head. Her eyes were midnight blue and her skin was pale. She wore a white polo shirt with a bright pink overall dress, lavender tights and black Mary Jane shoes.

In her hands was her pet parrot, Pauly.

Pauly was a parrot with dark green feathers, a light orange beak and yellow feet.

Lyra sat with her feet tucked under her, and leaned against her father, who held her in his arm, as she stared out of the window at the Savannah with a queer old-fashioned thoughtfulness in her midnight blue eyes.

She was such a little girl that one did not expect to see such a look on her small face.

It would have been an old look for a child of twelve and Lyra was only seven.

The fact was, however, that she was always dreaming and thinking odd things and could not herself remember any time when she had not been thinking things about grown-up people and the world they belonged to. She felt as if she had lived a long, long time.

Lyra gasped excitedly as she watched out from the window at the wildlife in the savannah.

"Wow!"Lyra gasped in awe. "Look at all the animals, daddy! They're so cool!"

"Yes, Lyra."Jonathan responded. "But you have to be careful. There are savage animals who are dangerous and would not hesitate to attack, if you are alone."

"I will never be alone, dad."Lyra chuckled and smiled at Pauly. "I got Pauly with me."

Pauly squawked, agreeing with Lyra.

Jonathan, Lyra and Pauly soon arrived to their destination which was a village filled with various people going on their daily lives.

Terrace houses were aligned along a circular exterior wall, while on the inside granaries, a cooking area and stables were situated.

Every family owned a field, which often was cultivated in the traditional way with a pickaxe.

Vegetables, grains and fruits were grown for their own needs.

Whoever can afford it buys an ox to make field work easier.

Life was very simple and was determined by rainy and dry seasons.

Lyra's eyes widen in amazement as she and Pauly came out of their ride when the vehicle arrived in front of a exquisite luxury-looking villa.

The driver helped Jonathan with his luggage as Lyra rushed inside the villa.

Jonathan then led Lyra and Pauly to their hotel room.

The villa room looked grand with wooden masks, carved giraffe figures and bold African prints on the bedcovers.

"Do you like your new home, Lyra?"Jonathan asked.

Pauly flew around the room as Lyra hugged her father in joy.

"I love it! Thank you, daddy!"Lyra giggled in joy. "Thank you!"

Jonathan smiled warmly as he hugged his daughter back.

He loved his only daughter with all his heart and lavished every imaginable care and tenderness on her.

Despite the fact that he did everything to make life better for Lyra, he was depressed by the death of his wife, who died after giving birth and felt his only child needed a mother's care.

"What should we do first, daddy?"Lyra asked joyfully as she did a little spin in her new room. "Go swimming at the pool? Go see the lions-"

"Lyra, let's first sit down first."Jonathan suggested. "I have something important I want to discuss with you."

Lyra nodded. "Okay."

Jonathan and Lyra sat down together on the bed as Pauly landed on top of the cupboard.

"What do you want to talk about, dad?"Lyra asked.

"You see, sweet heart."Jonathan said as he held his daughter's hands. "I'm married."

Lyra felt shock wash over as the words from her father struck her.

"You're married?!"Lyra said in disbelief. "When? How?"

"A couple months ago."Jonathan admitted. "I am married to Baroness Magdalene Wavebury. Her family is very wealthy and is capable of paying off my debts."

"Why didn't you tell this sooner?"Lyra asked.

"She has money, Lyra."Jonathan exclaimed. "And she's very fond of my title. It was either get married or sell the mansion back home."

Lyra looked down as a sad frown sprung on her face.

"Is she nice?"Lyra asked.

"She is awfully nice, Lyra."Jonathan admitted. "She has a son and a daughter around your age. You'll adore Magdalene and her two children. She'll make a wonderful mother. Well, a mother-like figure."

"Step-mother, you mean."Lyra corrected.

"She's gonna be a great step-mother."John assured as he stroked Lyra's cheek. "She and her kids are going come here within a week. l am sure you'll all bond and be the best of friends."

Lyra frowned. "I'm only seven."

"You won't always be."Jonathan declared.

A small smile sprung on Lyra's face as she looked at her father.

"Okay, daddy."Lyra responded. "If you're happy, I'm happy too."

"Thank you, sweetheart."Jonathan answered.

Jonathan gives Lyra a kiss on the forehead before he headed out of the room.

The smile on Lyra's vanished as she dropped herself on the bed as Pauly landed next to her.

"Dad is married again."Lyra murmured as she stared at the ceiling. "He didn't bother telling me until now."

"Don't take it the wrong way, Lyra."Pauly said. "Look on the bright side. You will get a mother and siblings all in one day. Isn't that what you always wanted?"

"Yes."Lyra agreed with a hint of curiosity in her face. "I always wanted to have a mum that would love me and siblings to play with. Maybe it won't be so bad."

"Not only that, Amara."Pauly commented. "Just before your new family members show up, we'll get the chance to explore around the Savannah."

A smirk suddenly sprung on Lyra's face at Pauly's words.

"Are you saying that because you're so desperate to find a lady parrot friend, Pauly?"Lyra asked with a fake curious tone.

"Stop that."Pauly commented.

Lyra lightly giggled as she stood up from her bed and picked up her parrot friend.

"Relax, Pauly. I am just joking."Lyra chuckled and notice the time on the clock hanging on the wall. "Gee, we better hurry or we'll be late for supper!"

The seven year old girl headed to the entrance of her bedroom before closing the door behind her and her parrot friend.

Next chapter we will see Lyra with Pauly head out to explore...
