Bella - BPOV
Another day in Forks High, life could be worse, but it could also be better. I sigh as I park my car in the school parking lot; thank God, it's Friday. I see Angela and Jessica talking with Mike and Ben, and make my way over to them. I'm not into all the girly stuff that gets Jessica excited all the time, but I do like Angela a lot. She is a soft and gentle soul, who likes to read and who is totally in love with Ben, they are so cute together. Jessica spots me and squeals: "Bella! Thank god, you're here. I need your help to convince Mike to go to the dance with me."
I smile as Angela rolls her eyes and turns to Mike. "Why would you say no, Mike? That's just stupid. We all know you like Jessica, so go to the dance with her already."
Mike looks at me, surprised, and stutters: "You do? You know that I like her, I mean? Oh god…"
I give him my knowing smile and start walking toward the school as I say: "You can't be more obvious, Mike. Do us all a favor and say yes."
I can hear Angela, Jessica, and Ben laughing as I make my way inside. Let's hope that was the push Mike needed to get together with Jessica, they will be so good together. As I turn into the hallway where my locker is, I see that Alice is waiting for me. I see her bouncing up and down and smiling at me. Alice's energy level never ceases to amaze me.
"Hi, Alice! Is everything okay?"
"That depends on how you answer my question. I know that my brother didn't make the best impression last week in Biology class, but I really like you and I just know that we will be the best of friends. Would you like to come over this weekend and meet my family?"
Her question shocked me; I really stood there for a few minutes, not really knowing how to react to her invitation. I like Alice and I really want to be friends with her, but it still bothers me how her brother, Edward, reacted to me being his Biology partner last week. He really looked at me like I smelled bad. I mean: who does that anyway?
"Bella, please don't overthink it. I know that you're worried about Edward, but he was feeling sick that day. He's better now and he promised me that he would behave. Please say yes."
"Okay, Alice, just make sure your brother behaves."
Alice squeals and pulls me in for a hug. It feels strange, her whole body is rather cold and stone-like. That's another observation that I can add to my growing list of things that I find strange about the Cullens. I swear that I have never seen them eat a single thing during lunch. I know that they all look like supermodels, but they still need to eat, right?
"He will Bella, I just know. I'll pick you up tomorrow around four. Is that okay?"
"Sure. But I don't mind driving myself, you don't have to come and pick me up."
"Believe me, we live in the woods and it's not easy to find. It's no hassle at all. It will be so much fun! See you tomorrow, Bella."
"Bye, Alice."
I smile as Alice skips away. I drop my bag in my locker and take out the books that I need for my next class. I roll my eyes when I hear Jessica squealing in my ear.
"Mike asked me to the dance! I need a dress! Angela and I are going to Port Angeles this evening to look for one. Are you coming with us, Bella? We can go and have dinner afterward. It will be great."
"Sure, I need to pick up a book order in Port Angeles anyway and Charlie has the evening shift. He won't be home until ten. I'll call him after school and ask, just to be sure."
"Awesome! Let's get to class."
I follow a bouncing Jessica through the hallway. Angela, Ben, and Mike join us and we walk to our next class together. I suddenly get the feeling of being watched, but as I turn around to look, nobody's there. We enter the classroom, but I can't seem to shake the strange feeling for the remainder of the morning.
The morning, however, passes quickly. Before I realize it, I'm standing in the cafeteria, mulling over the different choices of food. Nothing looks edible, so I settle for an apple, a granola bar, and a bottle of juice. As I turn around toward our table, I walk into a brick wall. I just manage to keep my food from falling on the ground, look up and straight into the eyes of Edward Cullen. He looks rather smug about it, if you ask me, as he says: "Sorry, Bella, I didn't mean to bump into you. Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine. No damage was done. Thanks for asking."
"No problem, Bella. It was nice bumping into you."
I watch his back as Edward walks away from me toward the back of the cafeteria where his family is seated. Did Edward Cullen just flirt with me? What the fuck? I make my way toward our table and sit down next to Angela. Jessica looks at me with a stunned look on her face and says:
"Bella, oh my god, what did Edward say to you? He has never talked to anyone other than his family members before. You're so lucky!"
"I really don't understand why he did that. Last week I would have sworn the guy hated me."
I throw a quick glance at the Cullens' table and notice that Edward is looking our way, a crooked smile on this face. I shake my head at his sudden behavior change. Maybe I should ask Alice if her brother is schizophrenic.
"Did you call your dad, Bella?"
I turn back to Angela while pulling out my phone.
"No, I'll send him a text now and I'll call him when school's out. He's on his way to work now."
"Great, it will be so much fun! I hope to find the perfect dress to impress Ben."
I chuckle as I see the blush on Angela's face. Thank god, I'm not the only one that blushes over nothing.
"I'm pretty sure that he will be impressed no matter what you wear, Angela."
"Thank you, Bella. That's very nice of you to say."
I smile as I finish my text to Charlie. I eat my granola bar and apple while listening to the conversations around me. The feeling of being watched creeps up on me again, but I can't see anyone paying special attention to me as I look around the cafeteria. The only thing that strikes me as odd is the smug look on Edward's face as he talks to his brothers.
I hear an incoming text and reach for my phone. It's from Charlie, telling me to have fun and to be safe. I show the text to Angela and Jessica, who squeals out loud.
"Awesome! We're going to have so much fun!"
We giggle as we make our way out of the cafeteria. I quickly glance over my shoulder, only to see Edward Cullen smiling at me. Yep, he's definitely schizophrenic. I see Alice skipping toward me with a gigantic smile upon her face. I look at her questioningly.
"What's up, Alice?"
"I'm just so glad that you're coming over to visit tomorrow. Everything will be perfect from now on, I just know it."
I wonder if Alice is on special medication. Sometimes she just doesn't make sense at all. I simply nod at her and say:
"I'll be ready at four. I've got to run now, my next class is starting. See you tomorrow."
Alice nods vigorously and skips to meet the rest of her family. I turn around and walk into the classroom. Jessica waves me over; I can see the curiosity on her face.
"What did Alice want? Had it something to do with Edward."
"She invited me over to her place tomorrow afternoon. She was just confirming when she will be picking me up."
Jessica's eyes open wide and she stutters as she says: "She… she… she… invited you to her place?"
I nod and feel myself blushing. Oh my god. Is it so abnormal for the Cullens to invite someone over? They've been living here for years. This can't be the first time that happened.
"Yes, is that so exceptional?"
"Exceptional indeed, that's the first time any of them invited someone over. Gosh, Bella, you need to tell me how you do it. How do you get the Cullens to notice you?"
I laugh at Jessica's question.
"Jessica, come on. I didn't do anything. Alice just walked up to me and asked me over. She apologized for Edward's strange behavior and said that she just knows that we will be the best of friends. So I accepted her invitation. That's it, nothing more. You make it sound like I'm a witch and put some kind of spell on them."
Jessica giggles and rolls her eyes at me. We both turn our attention to the teacher and before we realize it, school's out. Angela and Jessica will be picking me up in half an hour, so I drive home as fast as my truck will allow. I actually look forward to the weekend. Maybe Forks isn't that bad after all.
