Prologue-
Eliza remembered the first time she saw Alexander as if it were yesterday. It was the winter ball and Eliza had been standing there with her sister Angelica. She was looking for someone who would take her drink when she saw him on the staircase. His big eyes, his silky hair, it was all the qualities her imaginary dream man had and more. She saw Angelica see him too but as soon Eliza saw him and it was love at first sight. She leant over to Angelica and whispered in an excited voice
""That one's mine!"
Angelica smiled at her and then walked towards him. Eliza wished she had the confidence to walk up to men like her. She watched from afar as Angelica took his hand and they talked quickly. Eliza wondered what she was doing and feared that she was too late and that Angelica had been the typical older sister and had taken her crush, but no! She took him by the hand and walked towards Eliza. Eliza's heart was beating so fast as he came closer that she almost forgot her name. When he was 10 feet ahead of Eliza she heard him ask Angelica where she was taking him.
"I'm about to change your life."
"Then, by all means, lead the way" he replied intrigued. Angelica brought him over to Eliza and Eliza stepped towards him
"Elizabeth Schuyler. Pleasure to meet you!" He looked puzzled
"Schuyler?" Angelica looked at him with a smile.
"My sister!"
"He looked at her with a smile, Eliza didn't know what to say so she simply said
"Thank you for all your service" to which he replied
"If it takes fighting a war for us to meet, it will of been worth it." he bent down and kissed Eliza's hand and Eliza felt a zap of electricity tingle down her spine.
The rest was a blur and before Eliza knew it he was asking her father for his blessing which to Eliza's relief was a yes. The wedding was the best day of Eliza's life. She was finally happy and with her dream man. But she will never forget the look in Angelica's eyes when she made her speech at Eliza's wedding. It was just a quick look of wistfulness, wishing he was hers but that look went back to happiness for Eliza in seconds.
Eliza remembered the long, happy days they spent together in the streets looking for the perfect little cottage for them to live in, and the long nights with champagne in hand after they found the new cottage, the long mornings where neither one of them could bother getting out of bed. But that all changed as soon as the revolution started taking off and there were now no more leisurely strolls, no more champagne on the couch, no more lazy days, because Alexander was always out. Never coming home, even for sleep and never for the dinner that Eliza had perfected just for him because she thought he would be coming home for dinner for the first time in months. And some days Eliza sits alone and wonders what happened to that dream man of hers.
Eliza looked out the window of her little cottage looking for a person coming up the driveway. She knew Alexander wouldn't be home until dinner but she thought that there was a small chance that he would be home earlier. And when she thought earlier she thought maybe lunchtime if she prayed enough. So she sat there, watching and waiting. She got up to check the time and heard footsteps outside the door. Eliza jumped up to the door, hoping that Alexander had come home early. But as she opened the door with open arms she only saw a postman with a letter for her from Alexander. She sighed knowing well what this could be. She opened the letter and wasn't at all surprised to see the words
My dearest Eliza,
I'm terribly sorry, but I'm currently writing an important letter for Washington that has to be finished by tomorrow. I will not be home until late, have dinner without me, I'll find something to eat here.
Love Alexander
Eliza sighed, if only he knew what she knew, he'd come home early every day if he did. She had written to Washington over a week ago and had asked him to find a suitable reason to send Alexander home but Alexander was still out. She couldn't tell him that he was going to have a son in a letter, he had to find out in person but he was never home for her to tell him. She put the letter on the benchtop with all of his other letters that said the same thing. But as she put it down, another letter slipped out from underneath it for Eliza. She ripped it open eagerly, hoping for a letter from Alexander saying plans had changed, but it was from her sister Angelica. Eliza had not heard from her since she moved to England with her new husband, so she was excited over her letter.
Dear Eliza,
I have just written to tell you that I am coming to New York in a week's time. I have booked accommodation at a nearby hotel and it will be just me coming. And I'll be honest, the only reason I'm coming is because you said in your last letter that there's a surprise waiting for me! And to see you of course! Love you and see you soon, I leave on the third.
Love Angelica
Eliza felt very happy that her sister was coming to see her because now she wouldn't be as lonely as she was when she was just here alone. Eliza went over to the calendar on the wall and checked the date. It was the ninth which meant that Angelica was coming tomorrow! She went around the house and cleaned it top to bottom for Angelica, made dinner for herself and then sat on the couch afterwards waiting for Alexander to come home. She looked at the time which was 8 pm. She grabbed a candle and lit it. A few minutes later, heaviness came to her eyes and she drifted off to sleep.
Eliza woke with a cramp in her neck from sleeping on the couch, she got up and looked at the hazy, candlelit clock. 3:49 am it said! Eliza stumbled in the dark to get into her bed expecting Alexander to be there. She was sure he wouldn't mind her saying a quick hello to him and then going back to sleep. She quietly changed into her nightgown and hopped into bed. She rolled over expecting Alexander to be there but all she felt was the empty sheets. Curious, she got out of bed. I'm sure he's here, he has to be home by now she walked over to her dresser where an unlit candle and a pack of matches were, she carefully pulled a match out and lit the candle she walked back over to the bed. No sign of anyone or anything in the room. She looked over at the empty washing basket, expecting there to be Alexander's clothes in it but there were none. She searched the whole house until her candle ran out of wax and then she gave up. He should be home by now! Seeing as he isn't, something must've happened to him, what if he got into trouble? It's too dark now to find him but what if by morning it's too late! Eliza's scary thoughts kept rolling through her head until she went back to bed and cried herself to sleep.
The next morning when Eliza woke up and Alexander was still not there in bed and his clothes were still not in the washing basket, she got dressed and then went into the kitchen to make food. While she was eating she thought of a plan. She planned to eat breakfast, and then go speak to Washington about where he'd seen Alexander yesterday and if he'd help her look for him, then she'd go look for him with some help and at 1 pm she'd go get Angelica who'd help with the search too. Yes, that's what she would do. She quickly finished breakfast, grabbed her purse and was on her way to the door when she heard a voice behind her.
"Eliza, where are you off to so early? I thought you were asleep so I was in the study but it seems you were having breakfast. Everything ok?" The voice belonged to Alexander who was still dressed in his clothes from yesterday. Eliza whipped around and hugged Alexander tightly. Alexander was taken aback.
"W-what's happened?" Eliza let go of him and she suddenly felt a wave of anger towards him grow until she couldn't keep it in anymore.
"You fool! Where were you?! I went to sleep on the couch waiting for you then woke up at 3:49 am to find you gone! I looked everywhere in the house yet you were gone! Where were you! I cried myself to sleep last night because I thought you were gone! Maybe even gone from the world I thought! You said you would be home late but never that late, that late is unacceptable!" Eliza's shrill voice ran through the house. Alexander looked down.
"Look, I'm sorry ok? But certain things need to be done for Washington and I'm the one who has to do them. So, sorry I was late, but all I thought about when I was writing was that I was making a better life for you!"
"Well, you're making it very difficult for me right now! I can't handle the stress and the nights alone! Why won't you just take a break!? Even if it's just one day! I just want the man I married to come back to me and to actually spend some time with me instead of staying at his work all day and not even thinking about coming home to see his wife!" Eliza stopped. Alexander had tears in the corner of his eyes and he was biting his cheeks. He looked down. Eliza felt a sudden wave of regret that hit her so hard it nearly took the wind out of her.
"Alexander, I'm sorry, I didn't mean that. I just meant that…" Alexander cut her off.
"I have work to do. I'll be back late. Maybe don't freak out this time though." Then Alexander half-walked half-ran out the door. And Eliza sunk down to the floor heaving tears.
2 hours after Eliza and Alexanders' fight, Eliza finally calmed down properly. All she wanted to do was tell him how she felt but when she did she had hurt him so much without thinking about it. Eliza picked herself up off the ground and went into the kitchen. She had to make something nice for Angelica. She wondered if she should make Angelica's favourite dessert which she thought was a cake but as soon as she thought that she held back tears because cake was Alexander's favourite, not Angelica's favourite dessert. So she distracted her attention by thinking about Angelica's favourite thing which was cookies. She got the eggs, milk, flour, sugar and made choc-chip and raisin cookies. She did one final sweep of the house and went outside and signalled a carriage to come get her.
Eliza stood on the dock looking at the boat that was docking. Once it had docked, many people started coming off all at once. She looked for her sister's head but it was lost in all the chaos. Eliza started panicking, What if I missed her? Suddenly a tap on the back made Eliza jump and Eliza spun around to see Angelica laughing. Seeing Angelica smile immediately made Eliza smile and the two hugged.
"Long time no see sis!" Angelica said warmly
"Yes, Now no chit chat, the carriages will be gone like the wind if we don't get one now! We can talk on the way home" Angelica was surprised by Eliza's upfrontness but as she opened her mouth to question it, Eliza pulled her towards a carriage.
In the carriage, Angelica started talking about England and her house but Eliza paid no attention to her, she couldn't get over the fight she had had. When the carriage pulled up at the house Eliza helped Angelica take her things inside and walked swiftly into the kitchen to get the cookies. Angelica followed her to the kitchen.
"My oh my, what a gorgeous little cottage you have!" Angelica smiled
"You can go have a look if you want, I need to finish getting the cookies ready."
"Oh, you spoil me, sis!" Angelica walked out of the kitchen to go look around more. Eliza moved the little coffee table in the kitchen to the living room and put the cookies and milk on it. Angelica came back in.
"Love this house! But hey, where's Alexander? I thought he'd be here to welcome me home." Angelica had a puzzled look on her face.
"Umm, he's at work. Had things to do." Eliza turned her head away so Angelica couldn't see her face going red.
"Mhm… Alright, what's happened?" Angelica looked at Eliza knowingly
"I know you're hiding something, you've been awfully quiet ever since you came and got me. And don't you dare say nothing's wrong" Eliza looked up at her sister and it all came bubbling up in one big mess of words.
"Alexander sent me a letter yesterday saying he wasn't coming home until late and so I waited on the couch for him and then fell asleep, woke up at 3:50 and he wasn't home. I thought he was dead or lost and cried himself to sleep. This morning I got up early to go look for him and then he turned up right behind me saying he'd been in his study and then we fought and I said that I just wanted a husband that would spend time with me but he was hurt by that and I didn't mean for him to be hurt by it but then and then he just picked up his work stuff and left to go to the white house to do more work. But the point that I was trying to get across to him was that he's never home! Like he wasn't even home enough to know that you were coming nonetheless that i'm pregnant!"
Hope you enjoyed :)
