AN: I got inspired to write this story because of my love for the chemistry that developed in my earlier fics "Balancing Act" and "Nicoise Holiday" between Finn and (adult) Gigi and after re-watching an old Australian show called Spirited (can be found on youtube). It's not a crossover per se as I am just taking the emotion not so much the content from the other show. Besides one of the main character's there, Henry, also reminds me of Finn a bit. Clearly I have a type. And we shouldn't forget that both Gigi and Finn are really underused characters as well.
But just so there isn't a lot of uproar for Gigi's and Finn's age difference, I'm making the age difference smaller in this AU fic. So let's imagine Gigi was born when Rory was in her teens (year 1999) (and got to know her a little better), making the age difference to Finn 16 years. Everyone is above 18 years of age in this story (just putting that out there so there isn't confusion). But I understand that this might not be for everyone and that's okay - you have the freedom to not read it. The background will involve a happy ROGAN (got together post AYITL and they have kids) but I won't include them a whole lot. Story ignores Covid and current world conflicts (I need something light right now).
I intend to make this a slow burn with quite a bit of angst, but not just that. Some darker subjects will be included but I won't dwell on them extensively. It's impossible to write Finn without having fun the way Finn has fun. And undoubtedly the story will contain some M content - smut, language etc.
I know this coupling is far from the very popular ROGAN that tends to get me a lot of readers, but I just feel like I need to write this. I might borrow some small details from the earlier fics, but it won't be just a re-write for sure. This story is readable on its own without having read any of my former fics.
A small request: if anyone reading this has lived or lives in Australia (Melbourne) - I would love it if you checked my writing for any place- or Australian slang related errors. I don't mind going back and correcting things if that's the case. But I've tried writing in "Australian settings" before and I think it has worked well enough, probably won't try a whole lot when it comes to accent since Finn probably would have a lot of American influences as well.
Anyways - if you do read this and like it, you should know that reviews keep me going. As I still have another ROGAN fic going I probably won't be able to make daily posts with this one, but I'll do my best (what else is the summer holiday for?) and I aim to not make it very long (but those who know me, know it's often easier said than done).
SHORT SUMMARY: Finn is a divorcee having lost the appetite for life and who's just going through the motions. Georgia (Gigi) is a graduate student in a new city who's already seen plenty of life. Her sister Rory has asked Finn to keep an eye on her so she wouldn't get in any trouble. What could possibly go wrong?
Chapter 1
February 19th, 2022
Walking through the door of his apartment at 2 AM in the morning would've been expected from Finn back in college, but so far he hadn't had a sip of anything stronger than a Red Bull. He's dress-shirt was unbuttoned from the neck and even his cellphone had died on his way home.
He sighed deeply, having expected to walk into a pleasantly cool apartment. But apparently he'd forgotten the door to the balcony ajar earlier. The AC had been faced with an impossible challenge - trying to cool down the entire Southern Hemisphere.
He snapped the lights on and made his way to his study where he placed his laptop bag. But he really didn't want to open it, knowing he'd probably be working through the weekend anyways. As he walked over to the door that he'd left open to his never-used outdoor entertainment space the buzz of the streets of central Melbourn on a Friday night reached his ears. But he was in no mood to even think about hitting a club.
His fridge contained some leftover Chinese from last night - sweet sour chicken and some noodles. It'd do. He got himself a small craft beer too to melt the stress of the day away, and ate his meal at the kitchen counter, standing up.
Having now placed his phone on a wireless charger, he casually flipped through some videos on TikTok, needing something mindless. Suddenly he noticed a symbol for an unlistened voicemail that had arrived while his phone had been dead.
"Finn, hi! It's Rory. Sorry for calling so late, you're probably out somewhere or well… asleep," Rory's voice said. It wasn't that unusual that she called, they still sometimes talked. Rory had probably been the most sincere one to express how sad she'd been that he'd moved back to Australia a few years ago since the guys were never much for such detailed sensitive discussions.
"Listen, I'm calling because I just got back from Friday night dinner with my sister and my dad and I got some news. Well… she's leaving this weekend for graduate school. But since I've been so preoccupied with the kids and my writing… I guess I never really paid much attention to where she was going. But it turns out she's moving to Melbourne," Rory explained.
"And naturally I asked where she was staying because I know you're there. And guess what?" Rory asked as if expecting the voice mail to suddenly work both ways. "I think she's actually staying in one of your family's buildings - Victoria Greenway I think it is called, the one on Wellington or Well...something like that…," Rory pondered. "How weird is that?" she added.
It was even weirder than Rory thought since Finn had moved out of her sister's poolhouse five months ago and into that same building since one of the penthouses had freed up. He loved his sister Evie dearly, but all that mothering on how he should take better care of himself and Evie well-meaningly wanting to set her up with her friends - it just wasn't what he needed. But then again, knowing Evie, those things might have just been that gentle kick to get him to move out.
"Well anyways - I am not expecting you to give her the grand tour or anything, but if you don't mind I would like to at least give her your contact in case she has any trouble locally," Rory continued. "And do give us a call, we miss you. Emma just asked the other then when we were going to see uncle Finn again," Rory said, referring to her oldest. In the background Finn could hear Rory had a needy toddler, demanding for her attention and she ended the call soon enough. Most likely little Charlie - Finn thought.
He'd call her back tomorrow, well today technically, not seeing it as an issue if Rory gave her sister his number, not that he expected her to make contact. He'd seen the sister in question once in passing and his image of her was that of a teenager, hardly someone he expected to interact with or to want to interact with him.
He did miss his friends. Rory and Logan had settled in Scarsdale, New York, Robert and Colin both lived in Boston. It wasn't that he didn't have friends in Melbourne - oh he did, a bunch of guys he went to school with though that was ages ago. He had a lot of family around, he was good friends with his sister's husband and a few guys he knew through work. But what he hated were the questions wherever he went - whether he was seeing anyone, whether he'd been up to anything interesting as a lot of people expected him to be. He just didn't have those answers.
It would've been convenient to say that he just had too much work to do. And this weekend's prospect certainly would've confirmed that well enough. But his workload at his family's company seemed to come in waves - it was always like this before a big purchase or a merger. Other times - he could easily slip off the face of the earth for weeks without anyone really missing him. The trouble was that he didn't particularly feel like bothering. The divorce, that had come through almost a year and a half ago, had drained all the life out of him. Financially it could've been worse, and it had been life changing certainly - having caused him to do a 180 on the spot and move back home, simply not standing the look at all the places and things that reminded him of her. Had Finn not had friends and family who had somehow managed to stay together, had love stories that span decades, much like Logan and Rory or his parents, he would've come right out and said that true love was pure fiction.
He had the freedom and the money. He also still had the looks. Anyone who knew Finn knew that for a decade and half lovely-looking sheilas had been his favorite pastime. But now it was more like scratching an itch, a 'why not' rather than something he'd want to get lost in. He was still not too old. He was fit and healthy. He could do anything. But just like on most nights, and despite being tired as he was from the long day, he sank into his couch and plugged in his game console.
