The special begins in the evening.

A woman closes the window. A man walks into a house with bread as two birds look from the roof, and a postman plays the accordion on the streets.

Narrator: In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived 13 little girls in two straight lines.

The twins slide down the banister.

The Girls curtsy and say, "Bonjour."

The scene dissolves to the dining room at night. Miss Clavel and the girls are sitting around the table for dinner.

The Girls: "We love our bread, we love our butter, but most of all we love each other!"

Narrator: In two straight lines they broke their bread, brushed their teeth, and went to bed.

"Bonne Nuit!" the girls said to Ms. Clavel.

"Bonne Nuit, mes enfants," replied Miss Clavel.

Madeline and Riley fell fast asleep like good little girls, but…

Narrator: The girls all pretended to snore till Miss Clavel closed the door.

The others, it soon turned out, had other plans. Lulu and Danielle wanted to play! And so they began a pillow fight. Soon the other girls had joined the fight, and their giggling woke Madeline and Riley up.

Madeline and Riley stared at the scene in horror- this had to stop before Miss Clavel discovered that the other girls were staying up past their bedtime!

"We must do something!" exclaimed Riley.

Madeline thought very hard. "I know! Let's play a prank on them," she suggested.

As the pillow battle raged on and on and the girls became rowdier, Madeline explained her plan to Riley. The two girls silently prepared for the prank, unnoticed by the other eleven girls.

Right when it seemed that Nicolle would be the winner of the pillow fight, the closet door opened, and two white, flowy monsters popped out with a terrifying, "BOO!"

"Mon Dieu, what is that?" gasped Nicole.

"Quickly, hide!" the eleven girls shrieked as they dove under their beds in fright.

"Monster! Monster!" exclaimed Danielle.

"Do you think this was a good idea?" whispered Riley nervously to Madeline.

"Oui, they are distracted from playing, and now we can talk to them!" answered Madeline gleefully as she stepped forward.

"Mademoiselles, you should stop playing at once! Miss Clavel will be very upset if she finds out that you are not sleeping," she said in her deepest, scariest voice.

"They talk!" squeaked Lulu.

"But why does it sound like Madeline?" asked Yvette suspiciously.

"Because she IS Madeline!" said Riley, unable to bear the suspense any longer.

"RILEY?!"

Giggling, Madeline and Riley pulled off the bedsheets and pillowcases they had wrapped themselves in.

"You pranksters! You scared us!" said the other girls, who had also begun laughing.

Chloe said, "You cannot fool us again, Madeline."

"But we fool you every night!" retorted Madeline.

Nicole said "Madeline is right let us go to sleep before she or Riley play any more tricks!"

Meanwhile, in the middle of the night, Miss Clavel heard a sound and said, "Something is not right!"

She ran to the room and turned on the light, but from what she could see, there was not a problem in sight.

All of the girls were tucked in bed and fast asleep, as if nothing had ever happened.

Miss Clavel was confused - surely she had heard something! – but she was happy that the girls were safe. She turned off the light and returned to bed.

Narrator: And as one day became another, most of all, they loved each other. The next morning as the Sun began to rise, the 13 girls got ready for the day with somewhat guilty smiles.

All the girls and Miss Clavel were walking, and they were amused by the juggling clown.

Narrator: : They smiled at the good…

Madeline: Bonjour, Monsieur Clown!

Girls' said We smile at the good.

As they walked farther, they saw a criminal being arrested by the officer.

Narrator: They frowned at the bad…

Girls said We frown at the bad.

Narrator: And sometimes, they were very sad.

"Very Very sad!" thought the girls as they gave their balloons to a wounded soldier.

The girls soon reached the clocktower.

Narrator: They left the house at half past nine, in rain - or shine. Such good little girls in two straight lines, except the smallest, Madeline.

Miss Clavel said "Madeline. Madeline!"

Madeline

If you believe you must be big

In order to be tough,

Then you should get to know me-

I'll teach you other stuff!

THE 12 GIRLS:

If you believe you must be big

In order to be tough,

Then you should get to know her-

She'll teach you other stuff!

Madeline

I'm Madeline, I'm Madeline,

And though I'm very small,

I'm Madeline, I'm Madeline,

Inside, I'm very tall!

THE 12 GIRLS:

She may be teeny-tiny,

Diminutive, petite,

But that has never stopped her

From being pretty neat!

Madeline

I'm Madeline, I'm Madeline,

I'm not some little twig.

I'm Madeline, I'm Madeline,

Inside, I'm big!

THE 12 GIRLS:

Dum dee dum dee dum!

Madeline

I'm Madeline, I'm Madeline,

I'm not afraid at all!

I'm Madeline, I'm Madeline,

And bravest of them all!

THE 12 GIRLS:

Dum dee dum dee dum.

We know some little girls

Who are quite timid and demure,

But that is not the case with her,

Of that you can be sure!

Madeline

I'm not some shrinking violet

Or doormat for your feet.

I'm quite the bravest, toughest

Little girl you'll ever meet!

I'm Madeline, I'm Madeline

I hope you have it straight.

I'm Madeline, I'm Madeline,

And inside, I'm great!

THE 12 GIRLS:

Dum dee dum dee dum,

She's Madeline, she's Madeline,

We hope you have it straight.

She's Madeline, she's Madeline,

And inside, she's...

Madeline

Dum dee dum dee dum...

ALL 13 GIRLS:

GREAT!

Miss Clavel picked Madeline up and carried her for the rest of the walk as everyone laughed playfully.

Narrator: To little creatures, she was nice, and she was not afraid of mice.

As the eleven girls shouted in fright, Riley said, "shh don't scare the mice!"

Madeline said, "They are our friends!"

Narrator: They love Fall, Winter, snow, and ice. To the tiger at the zoo, Madeline just said...

Madeline: Pooh-pooh!

As the girls crossed a footbridge over the Seine River, Riley quickly climbed on top of the suspended bridge's rampart.

Narrator: And nobody knew quite so well how to frighten Miss Clavel

Riley

I'm known to frighten Miss Clavel,

Sometimes even more.

Are you looking for adventure?

Come fly with me, alors!

I'll show you all of Paris.

I'll take you on a tour.

We'll go up and up and up so high

You'll long for an encore!

I'll take you on a little trip

High above the Seine.

We'll buzz the Eiffel Tower,

Then we'll go right up again!

We'll greet the happy tourists

From the Champs-Élysées.

We'll zoom right through Napoleon's arc-

He won't with us today.

There's the famous opera,

And there's the Sacré-Cœur.

There's a funny hat

From some fine designer's store.

There's a bank right on the left.

Regardez! Île de la Cité!

And if you're really thirsty,

We'll drop into the café.

There's the new museum

Full of works of art galore.

There's a picture I can't figure out,

What is she smiling for?

Time for us to land

In this new airplane of mine,

The only way to travel:

Fly Air Riley!

Riley returned back to reality with Ms. Clavel gently pulling her back down onto the footpath.

"How was the the plane ride?" asked Madeline.

"Fun! You would have love it, Madeline," said Riley.

Narrator: In that vine-covered house, all was happy and fine - till that morning the girls left in those two straight lines. It was fall in Paris, a very cold day, but poor Riley did not want to play.

Riley was sitting on the bench watching the leaves fall from the Autumn trees, but she still didn't feel like saying a thing. She watched everyone play on this chilly day, but Riley still didn't want to play.

"What's wrong, Riley? Don't you want to play with the other girls?'' asked Madeline.

"Oui, my twin, but my voice feels a little funny today," said Riley

"Riley, you love Football. We'll have to forfeit the game if you don't play. You are one of our best players!" insisted Madeline.

Riley nodded and said, "Sorry Madeline, but I'd rather just sit and watch the Football game from here."

Narrator: The Juggling clown popped out to play, but Riley simply walked away.

"Sorry Monsieur Clown, next time," said Madeline.

Narrator: By the time they reached the zoo, 11 girls walked two by two.

"Where are Riley and Madeline?" asked Chloe.

"Yes, they must scare the tiger again!" Nicole chimed in.

"Oui, oui, where are both girls?" asked Miss Clavel worriedly.

"Riley and Madeline?!" called Chloe.

"Have you seen two twins come by, Monsieur Zookeeper?" asked Nicole.

"Oui, come with me," said the zookeeper, and he took them to the monkey cage

"Riley?" called Danielle.

"Madeline?" called Lulu.

"Riley and Madeline, Riley and Madeline, Riley and Madeline! Are you two alright?" exclaimed Miss Clavel.

"Oui, oui, Miss Clavel I'm fine, really," said Madeline.

Riley's voice sounded a little hoarse. "Oui, oui, Ms. Clavel, just a little tired."

"Aha! Fatigue. I think you little girls stayed up late last night after I turned out the light," said Miss Clavel.

"Oui, Miss Clavel," replied Madeline guiltily.

Miss Clavel laughed. "Come, mes petites, we need you at the tiger's cage. Nicole is so scared."

When they reached the tiger's cage, Madeline said, "You try it this time, Riley!"

"Pooh," was all poor Riley could manage to say.

"Oh Riley, you still need practice, but soon you will be as good as me!" said Madeline cheerfully, "Pooh-pooh!"

When the girls reached home, it was dinner time.

Girls: We love our bread, we love our butter, and most of all, we love each other.

Riley didn't feel hungry, so she fed the mice instead.

Narrator: In the middle of the night, Miss Clavel turned on her light and said, "Something is not right."

Miss clavel

Something is not right.

Something is quite wrong.

Something is not right,

And so I sing this song.

At night it should be calm.

At night it should be still.

But something's in the air, And it's giving me a chill!

Something is not right.

Something is quite wrong.

Something is not right,

And so I sing this song.

In my head's a bell,

My personal alarm,

That warns me when my pretty little girls

Have suffered pain or harm.

Something is not right.

Something is quite wrong.

Something is not right,

And so I sing this song.

I have an awful feeling.

I can't said what or why.

It could have been a dream,

But I thought I heard a cry.

Something is not right.

Something is quite wrong.

Something is not right,

And so I sing this song!

Miss Clavel opened the girls' bedroom door where she found the girls in shock.

"Miss Clavel! Riley can't speak!" cried Madeline.

"Oui, she still hasn't said a word! We must call the doctor!" said Miss Clavel.

In less than an hour, Dr. Cohn quickly made his way to the vined house near the Eiffel Tower to see what had taken away Riley's voice.

"Madeline, could you wait with your friends please? I need to see Riley alright?" said the doctor kindly.

Riley looked into her twin sister's eyes to let her know that she would be alright.

"Riley open your mouth please. Say 'ahhh'," instructed the doctor.

Riley did as he said, and the doctor frowned. Just as he had suspected, she had severe Tonsillitis.

"Riley must be operated at once, otherwise her throat will be infected," he told Miss Clavel.

The girls and Miss Clavel watched as Dr. Crohn took Riley in his arms. The girls cried as they saw the van drive away into the night.

Don't worry mes petites, all will be well," said Miss Clavel.

Narrator: In a car with one red light, they drove out into the night.

I will have to "Give Kathy the girls' aunt a call," said Miss Clavel.

At the hotel, the phone rang.

"Miss Clavel, is is 1 A.M., is something the matter with the one of the girls?" asked Aunt Kathy sleepily.

"Kathy, you are needed at the hospital. Riley is going to have her tonsils out," Miss Clavel explained.

"Okay, I will be right over, Miss Clavel. Thank you for calling me!" said Aunt Kathy.

Meanwhile, Riley was on the operating table. Ethan, the anesthesiologist, placed a mask right on Riley's face.

"I can do anything," mumbled Riley as her eyes closed.

Back at the old house, Miss Clavel took Madeline's hand and kindly said, "Madeline, it's time to go back to bed, ma petite. Aunt Kathy is staying with Riley right now at the Hospital, so there is no need to worry. I'm so glad you had woken up and helped Riley. I am very proud of you."

Narrator: But Madeline didn't feel proud for helping her sister. She just wanted her twin back, safe and well again. It was these thoughts that kept her tossing and turning for the rest of the night. When the girls awoke the next day, Riley was still away.

"Where is Riley? I was hoping that last night was a dream, but she is not Here," said Nicole.

"Now Riley has no voice," said Chloe sadly.

"No, silly, it is her tonsils," said Madeline.

"But what is la tonsils?" asked Danielle.

Chole scoffed. "What are tonsils? Everyone know that tonsils are the things in the leg!"

"In the leg?" squeaked Danielle, "The leg?! Now Riley will have a hole in her leg?!"

"No, no! The tonsils are the things in the arm, aren't they?" Nicole said.

"Riley will have a hole in her arm?" asked Lulu.

"A hole?!" The other girls, minus Madeline, exclaimed in alarm.

"No, the tonsils are the things in the tummy," said Yvette firmly.

"Then Riley will have a hole in her tummy?" asked Danielle.

"Good guess but no. Her tonsils are in the back of her throat," Madeline answered in annoyance. Feeling tired and overwhelmed, not to mention frustrated at her friends' continuous questions, Madeline stormed out of the room. She tried to calm herself as she went downstairs, reminding herself that Riley would be okay. Yet how could her friends be that stupid?! She loved her friends, but she wished they would show some understanding of what was going on with Riley. She was struggling to deal with it emotionally, and none of her friends' stupid helped her mood.

Narrator: In the night, without a pout, the inflamed tonsils were taken out. Riley woke up after several hours in a room decked with flowers.

Riley sat up in bed and looked around. "Madeline must be in the next room on the right," she thought.

"Here is some mineral water for you, Riley, and tonight, you will have ice cream," said Nurse Jennifer.

"Merci madame!" said Riley.

Nurse Jennifer smiled. "Is there anything else you would like?" she asked.

"Some mice, s'il vous plait," said Riley.

"Some ice?" asked Nurse Jennifer, looking puzzled.

No madame, some mice. Please?" asked Riley sweetly.

Aunt Kathy chuckled. "Sorry about that, Nurse Jennifer. Riley has quite an imagination," she said.

"Aunt Kathy, what are you doing here?" asked Riley.

"I have been here since Miss Clavel called me. Now lie down please," said Aunt Kathy.

"Madeline is next door right," asked Riley.

"No Riley, I'm sorry dear," said Aunt Kathy.

Narrator: Back at the house the girls said a prayer that Riley would soon be there. With their second bravest away, they weren't amused their daily routine. They became very confused. With little Madeline leading the way, they frowned at the good, they smiled at the bad, and they didn't know when to be happy or sad.

"Hmm, I think this is not right," said Chloe.

"Oh Chole, it's only Madeline's first time lead us," said Nicole.

"Oui, but I am so confused," said Chloe.

Soon, it was dinnertime.

GIRLS: …and most of all, we love our butter!

"What?!" exclaimed Nicole.

"No, first we brush our bread, and then we break our teeth!" said Danielle.

Narrator: Meanwhile, Riley ate and drank on her bed where there was a crank. A crack in the ceiling had the habit of sometimes looking like a rabbit. Outside were birds, trees, and sky, and so ten days passed quickly by.

One fine morning, Miss Clavel asked, "Isn't this a fine day to visit Riley?"

The girls eagerly got ready to leave, but Miss Clavel said, "Not so fast mes petites! First, we must finish our breakfast."

Miss Clavel took the little girls on the bus to the market to help pick out the perfect gifts for Riley. They decided to buy a lovely get-well card and a stuffed bear for Riley. At the hospital there was flowers, toys, and plenty of other gifts from close family and relatives.

"Um, Riley, we have no family, well just for Aunt Kathy remember?" said Madeline, confused by the display of gifts.

"Oui, but hey, free toys, Maddie!" said Riley.

"I guess…" Madeline conceded.

RILEY:

Root beer floats, banana boats,

Gelato, and sorbet are hard to resist.

MADELINE:

What if they didn't exist?

"What? Who?" asked the rest of the girls.

RILEY:

For me it wouldn't be easy,

'Cause you see…

THE 13 GIRLS:

I'm ice cream crazy,

No ifs, ands, buts, or maybes.

MADELINE:

Ice cream crazy!

RILEY:

'Cause I'm an ice cream, ice cream baby.

MADELINE:

We have the colors of the rainbow

From all around the world.

And anything that you'd like to try

You can have it plain or swirled!

RILEY:

With a pinch and a dash of this and that,

MADELINE:

On a cone, it does a balancing act.

An oh, you know it's bound to droop,

RILEY AND MADELINE:

Yum-a-dum-dum, it's a triple scoop!

THE 13 GIRLS:

I'm ice cream crazy,

No ifs, ands, buts, or maybes.

RILEY:

Ice cream crazy,

'Cause I'm an ice cream, ice cream baby.

Sometimes, I just can't decide

What flavor I should choose.

So I close my eyes and one, two, three

I know that I can't lose!

MADELINE:

With a pinch and dash of this and that,

RILEY:

Till the cherry on top is an acrobat!

Oh, I get carried away.

MADELINE:

Yum-a-dum-dum, just look at that sundae!

My darlin', someday if you weigh

More than you should, it's okay,

'Cause I will make your sundae

With no fat, low-cal sorbet!

THE 13 GIRLS:

Ice cream crazy,

No ifs, ands, buts, or maybes.

Ice cream crazy,

'Cause I'm an ice cream, ice cream baby!

Ice cream crazy,

No ifs, ands, buts, or maybes,

Ice cream crazy,

'Cause I'm an ice cream, ice cream baby,

Baby.

Baby!

"Yum, ice cream, Riley!" said Madeline, eyeing her twin's treat longingly.

"I know this is the best!" said Riley happily as she finished the last scoop.

Meanwhile in the hallway, Miss Clavel asked, "Dr. Cohn, is everything alright with Riley?"

"She seems to been recovering quite well," said Dr. Cohn, "She appears to be talking as normally as before. Riley should be ok in a few more days, and we'll send her home very soon."

Narrator: The girls were very happy when Riley finally came home.

"I'm home mes amis!" said Riley, "It's been lonely and boring without you guys."

"RILEY! Riley is home!" shouted all the girls.

Riley and Madeline hugged each other and went to explore the rest of the Vined House that Riley missed the most. The twins went to the kitchen to see where their pet mice were.

Narrator: Later on, everyone went outside to go play Football with Riley. This time, Riley played along with the rest of the twelve little girls that cold, Fall day.

"It is a good thing they are letting us have a rematch against la waft!" said Madeline.

"Yeah!" agreed Riley.

Winter soon arrived, much to the girls' delight. Madeline showed off her ice-skating talents to the other girls, and she and Riley befriended a snowman.

Narrator: One day in Winter, all of the girls went for a walk. Madeline didn't feel like her normal self. She didn't feel like doing anything that made her happy, so she sat aside and watched the other girls play in the snow.

"Marvel! How well these little girls can skate!" exclaimed Christo.

"Ah oui merci! Our Madeline is our finest skater. Madeline, show the Monsieur your Triple Jumper!" said Miss Clavel.

"Non, non, pardon, not today Miss Clavel" said Madeline.

"Come on Madeline! You are so good!" said Chloe.

"Merci, but not today, Chloe. I will just sit here and watch" insisted Madeline.

At that moment, mice appeared out of the Snowman's hat. Madeline sighed.

Narrator:: Even when she watched the mice skating gaily on the ice, the poor petit thing refused to smile, even for a little while.

As the girls left the ice-skating pond, Riley said, "Maddie, what's up? You are never this quiet."

Narrator: The Juggling clown popped out to play, but Madeline simply walked away.

"Sorry, can't play today, Monsieur Clown. Bye," said Riley.

Narrator: By the time they reached the zoo, eleven Girls walk two by two.

"Where are Madeline and Riley?" asked Chloe.

"Yes, they must scare the Tiger again!" said Nicole.

"Oui, oui, where are they?" asked Miss Clavel.

"Riley! Madeline!" called Danielle.

"Riley! Madeline!" called the rest of the girls.

Nicole said, "Monsieur, have you seen twin girls? One with black hair, and one with red?"

"Look at the Birds! Riley! Madeline!" shouted Chloe.

"Look to the monkeys! Riley! Madeline!" called Danielle.

"Riley! Madeline!" called Miss Clavel again. "Riley! Madeline! Hmm, the duck pond!"

The girls and Miss Clavel went to the duck pond where they found Madeline and Riley.

"Madeline? Madeline, are you alright? Riley, you two can't just wander off like that!" scolded Miss Clavel.

"Oui, Miss Clavel, but we wanted to see the ducks, so we took a shortcut through the bears' walkway," said Riley.

"Oui, oui, Miss Clavel, I am just a little tired," Madeline said.

Miss Clavel said, "Aha! Fatigue. I think you little girls stayed up late last night after I had turned off the light," as she picked Madeline up in her arms.

"Oui, Miss Clavel," said Madeline.

"Walk beside Miss Clavel," suggested Riley.

"Come ma petite Madeline, we need you at the tiger cage. Nicole is so scared," said Miss Clavel.

"Pooh," said Madeline when they reached the tiger. But the Tiger kept on growling.

"Madeline, don't you normally say 'pooh-pooh'?" asked Riley.

The tiger stopped and looked at Riley.

Riley looked smug. "Done," she said.

"Riley, you did it right this time!" exclaimed an impressed Chloe.

Madeline looked worse, and Miss Clavel had to carry her home. The girls soon sat around the dinner table.

Girls: We love our bread, we love our butter, and most of all, we love each other.

Madeline lost her appetite and gave her food to her mice.

Narrator: In the middle of the night, Miss Clavel turned on her light

"Something is not... right!" exclaimed Miss Clavel.

Narrator: And afraid of a disaster, Miss Clavel ran fast and faster.

Miss Clavel opened the girls' bedroom door to find twelve of the girls talking at once. As for Madeline…

Narrator: Madeline sat up in bed. She cried and cried. Her eyes were red. Dr. Cohn came quickly by to see what made poor Madeline cry.

"Madeline, can you open your mouth, please?" Doctor Chon requested.

Madeline kept her mouth shut.

"Madeline, watch me. It's very simple. Just open your mouth wide, and the doctor puts the little stick in," said Riley. She opened her mouth wide to demonstrate. "'Ahhh'. See? There's nothing to it."

"Correct! Thank you, Riley," said Dr. Cohn to Riley. He turned to Madeline again. "It's your turn now, Madeline. Come on," he said coaxingly.

"Okay, but only one peek," said Madeline hesitantly.

"Of course. Open wide now. Ah," said the doctor.

After checking her throat, Dr. Cohn said, "Very good, thank you. Your throat is fine. Now, I need to check your temperature," he instructed.

Madeline obediently opened her mouth "She has a high fever," Doctor Chon muttered in concern as he pulled the thermometer out of Madeline's mouth.

"A fever?" Riley frowned, not believing her ears. It just didn't make sense to her. Madeline's hurting tummy couldn't just make a fever appear by magic… could it?

Narrator: And shortly after, Dr. Cohn rushed out to use the telephone and dialed Dato 106. "Nurse," he said, "It's an appendix."

"Why is my tummy hurting?" Madeline sniffed, trying not to cry.

"I don't know, sis," Riley admitted honestly, squeezing her hand, "But I'll be here until you have to leave for the hospital."

"Hospital? No hospital! Riley, please!" Madeline begged, her eyes as wide as saucers at the word.

"I'm sorry Maddie, but I can't do anything to get Dr. Chon to change his mind." Riley said, and she felt horrible as Madeline started to cry, her tummy becoming worse than before. To make her feel better, she kissed her twin's forehead.

Doctor Chon heard Madeline's cries from across the hall, and he smiled a little at the sight of Riley trying to calm Madeline down when he returned. "Miss Clavel, can you please get Madeline a warm blanket?" he asked.

Miss Clavel nodded and left the room as Doctor Chon took Madeline out of her sister's arms.

"No! No! NO!" Madeline screamed through her tears, frightened at what was going on.

"Shh, shh, Madeline," Doctor Chon said gently to calm her, "You'll see your friends and sister again soon, I promise."

"No hospital!"

"Madeline, you do want your tummy to stop hurting, right?" Riley asked, getting her sister's attention.

"Y-yes," Madeline sniffed in reply as Miss Clavel started to wrap her up in the woolen blanket.

Riley could see the pain of leaving her in Madeline's eyes, knowing how it felt very well. Yet, Madeline had to get better, even if it meant paying a visit to the hospital.

Narrator: Everybody had to cry. Not a single eye was dry.

"Good bye, Madeline!" said Nicole.

"Please come back soon!" said Danielle.

"Good luck Madeline!" said Riley.

"Do not worry, mes petites, everything will be alright," said Miss Clavel, hiding her concern about Madeline. "Riley, it's time to go back to bed, me petite," she said, taking Riley's hand once they were back in the house. "I'm so glad you had woken up and helped Madeline. I am very proud of you."

Narrator: But Riley didn't feel proud for helping Madeline. She just wanted her twin back, safe and well again. It was these thoughts that kept her tossing and turning for the rest of the night. in a car with one red light, they drove out into the night. When the girls awoke next day, Madeline was still away.

Riley sat up in bed as she heard Nicole crying again.

"Nicole?" asked Riley.

"Where is Madeline? I was hoping it would be a dream, but she is not here," sniffed Nicole.

"Oh, now Madeline has no pedendix," said Chloe sympathetically.

"Silly, it is an appendix," said Riley.

"What is la appendix." Asked Danielle.

"What is an appendix? Everyone knows that an appendix is the thing in the head!" said Chloe.

Danielle looked frightened. "In the head? Now Madeline has a hole in her head?!" she exclaimed.

"No, no, Toto! The appendix is the thing in the arm!" said Nicole.

"The arm? Now Madeline has a hole in her arm?!" squeaked Danielle.

"No, no, everyone knows the appendix is the thing in the tummy!" said Yvette.

"Yes, Yvette " Riley muttered with annoyance. Feeling tired and overwhelmed, not to mention frustrated at her friends' continuous questions, Riley stormed out of the room. She was annoyed and emotional as she went downstairs and tried to remind herself that Madeline would be okay.

Yet how could her friends be that stupid?! She loved her friends, but she wished they show some understanding of what was going on with Madeline, because she was struggling to deal with it emotionally and none of her friends' stupid questions were helping her mood. Was this how Madeline felt while Riley was at the hospital?

Narrator: In the night, without a pout, the bad appendix was taken out. Madeline awoke a few hours later in a room with flowers.

Madeline stretched with a loud yawn and saw someone at her bedside. But as she was still a bit bleary-eyed, she thought it was her twin visiting her. "Riley?" she asked sleepily but hopefully as she rubbed her eyes.

"No, Madeline, I'm afraid not, but here is some mineral water for you. Tonight, you will have ice cream!" said Nurse Jennifer cheerily.

"Merci madame!" said Madeline. She took the water and started to drink, not having drunk much before her operation. While she was grateful for Nurse Jennifer's kindness, Riley wouldn't leave her mind.

Nurse Jennifer smiled. "Is there anything else you would like?" she asked.

"Some mice, s'il vous plait," said Madeline.

"Some ice?" asked Nurse Jennifer with some amusement, remembering Riley's question.

"No Madame, some mice. Please?" asked Madeline sweetly.

Out in the hallway, Dr Chon said, "Kathy, the surgery went as well as we could have hoped, but Madeline's body is weak from fighting the infection, so she'll need rest. She can't see her friends for ten days, but you are the only one that can come in and out of her room."

Aunt Kathy sighed. "I know, I know, but I just can't bring myself to walk out of this hospital. I mean, first Riley was here, and now Madeline do . Things usually happen in set two by two with those twins," she said.

"Yes, well, Madeline's fever is coming down now, so we will not have to worry for much longer," said Dr. Cohn reassuringly.

"That is great to know," said Aunt Kathy with a smile.

...

"Miss Clavel, any word from Doctor Chon?" Riley asked, still worried for Madeline.

"Yes," said Miss Clavel smiling, "Madeline's out of surgery."

"So, can I visit her?" Riley asked hopefully.

"Riley, you have to think of the other girls too," Miss Clavel said gently.

"Why?! I'm her twin sister!" Riley grumbled, crossing her arms. She was still cross with the rest of the girls for that morning and was also upset over not being able to find out how Madeline was.

The mild-mannered teacher was understandably shocked by Riley's suddenly negative attitude to her friends. "Riley, that's enough of this back talk of yours!" Miss Clavel scolded, a frown crossing her normally-serene features, "Now please sit down and wait for the other girls!"

"No! I don't want to! I want Madeline and only her!" Riley burst out, before breaking down in tears.

Miss Clavel was stunned by Riley's words, and she wrapped the girl into a hug. "Riley, Madeline will be fine. We can visit her when the ten days pass. Alright?" she said, looking down at the elder twin sister, "Right now, Aunt Kathy should already be at the hospital."

"Alright, Miss Clavel," Riley sniffed, rubbing her nose.

Narrator: The girls thought it would be forever, but one day, Miss Clavel said, "Madeline is doing better. We shall visit her soon." And so the girls left to visit her that afternoon. Riley was anxious to see her sister because she truly did miss her.

Chole :

In an old house set in Paris

Lived 13 girls who were quite fine.

And the smallest, but the bravest

Was our best friend, Madeline.

ALL:

Ma chérie, oh,

Ma chérie, oh,

Ma chérie, oh Madeline!

You have lost your dear appendix.

Quel dommage, oh Madeline!

The girls clap their hands.

Riley:

She loved mice, and she loved tigers.

She loved rain, and she loved shine.

Never crying; always laughing,

She was happy all the time.

ALL:

Ma chérie, oh,

Ma chérie, oh,

Ma chérie, oh Madeline!

You have lost your dear appendix.

Quel dommage, oh Madeline!

Narrator: Then Miss Clavel said, "It would be so pleasant to stop and get Madeline a beautiful present."

When they stopped at the same gift shop as before, the girls looked high and low to find the perfect gift to wrap with a bow. However, the girls don't know how much they would need to pay. They didn't have much to say.

"Is this where you brought me my present at last time?" asked Riley.

"Yes look!" said Chloe.

"Only 843 francs for this fabulous vintage carousel," said the shopkeeper.

"Hmm it looks old," said Riley, surveying it critically.

"For you, it is only 842 francs," said the shopkeeper.

"Oh Chloe, you can't get that for Madeline! Look for something small, ma cherie," said Miss Clavel.

"Come, we will get something smaller," said Nicole.

"Yes, bye, OVERPRICED man," said Riley.

"Sorry about that, Riley," said Miss Clavel.

They soon found an ice cream stand. "One ice cream please," said Danielle.

"Oh Danielle, you can't get that ice cream for Madeline. Look for something that doesn't drip, ma cherie," said Miss Clavel.

"Come, we will get Madeline something that doesn't drip," said Chloe.

"Yum ice cream!" said Riley.

"Come, Riley. You must still help us," said Danielle.

"Can you put this into a cup please?" Miss Clavel asked the ice cream man.

"But of course, Madame," said the ice cream man.

"What should we do? There must be something for Madeline. Boy, Riley was easy to shop for last time" complained Danielle as they walked down the street.

"I don't know what we can get- Eik! Eik! A Mouse!" shrieked Nicole.

"Your guys, oh brother! Monsieur, is this your mouse?" Riley asked the shopkeeper of the shop where the mice were displayed.

"Why yes!" said the man, "I am sorry if I scared your friends. Do not go 'Eik Eik', mes enfants. These mice aren't real."

Nicole, Danielle, and Chloe looked at each other and exclaimed, "The perfect thing for Madeline!"

"And may I interest you in one of these lovely Tigers?" asked the shopkeeper.

"Oui Oui this is much better!" said Nicole, "Madeline would love to say pooh-pooh to this!"

How much it is for wrapping, Monsieur?" Riley asked.

"Riley, for you it will be on the house. Wait right here please," said the man.

Back on the bus, the girls sang,

ALL:

Ma chérie, oh,

Ma chérie, oh,

Ma chérie, oh Madeline!

You have lost your dear appendix.

Quel dommage, oh Madeline!

Narrator: "Visitors from two to four" read a sign outside her door. As tiptoeing with solemn face, with some flowers and a vase, in they walked, and then said, "Ahh!" when they saw the toys and candy and the dollhouse from Papa.

Madeline was happy when she saw the girls. Riley ran to her twin, and everyone was thrilled.

"Oh, my dear twin, it's great to see you again!" said Riley.

They played with all the toys and shared many joys.

"I'll be outside talking to Dr. Cohn now. You girls behave, and I will return soon," said Miss Clavel.

"Ohh, a tiger!" exclaimed Madeline at the sight of the girls' gift.

Danielle gave a gasp and ran.

Madeline went after her. "Silly girl! Just say pooh-pooh!" she giggled.

"Yea, Madeline!" cheered the rest of the girls.

Narrator: But the biggest surprise by far on her stomach was a scar.

"Ohhh," said the girls in awe at the sight of Madeline's new scar.

Madeline:

Voila, my scar! Voila, my scar!

I'll let you take a peek.

It's not real big, it's not real red,

But it's truly tres, tres chic.

My belly was quite boring once,

So bare and plain and white.

But now my scar adds just the touch.

It makes it look so right.

Voila, my scar! Voila, my scar!

Come take a look at me.

Regardez my scar!

Hoorah! Voila!

Please tell me what you see.

NICOLE: A "C"!

DANIELL: A "3"!

CHLOE: A "Z"!

GIRLS: A flea!

Madeline: A flea?!

GIRLS: Oui, oui!

Madeline

Voila, my scar! Voila, my scar!

I thank my lucky stars!

I don't miss my appendix

'Cause I got a brand-new scar!

"Come, mes petites. It is time for us to go. You and Madeline have made a lovely show," said Miss Clavel laughing.

"Riley you too, please" said Aunt Kathy.

"But Aunt Kathy!" Riley protested.

"Riley, please. Madeline's had a hectic and sleepless night. She's emotionally drained and needs her rest. You can see her again soon," Aunt Kathy insisted.

Riley pouted. "Okay," she conceded.

Narrator: "Goodbye!" they said, "We'll come again!"

"Goodbye Madeline!" the girls said, "We'll come again!"

Narrator: And the little girls left in the rain.

"Poor Madeline, she has to stay in bed," said Nicole.

"Yes, with all of the toys and candies," said Chloe.

"And the doll house," added Danielle.

Narrator: They went home and broke their bread

GIRLS: We love our bread, we love our butter, and most of all, we love each other!

We love our bread, we love our butter, and most of all, we love each other!

Narrator: They brushed their teeth, and went to bed. Riley and the girls still missed their friend. After some discussion, the girls drew appendix scars on their stomachs so well that they knew it would frighten Miss. Clavel. ... Then in the middle of the night, Miss Clavel turned on the light and said, "Something is not right!"

Miss clavel

Something is not right.

Something is quite wrong.

Something is not right,

And so I sing this song.

Everything was good.

Everything was fine.

What can it be now

After Madeline?

Something is not right.

Something is quite wrong.

Something is not right,

And so I sing this song!

Narrator: And afraid of a disaster, Miss Clavel ran fast and faster.

Miss Clavel said, "Please children do tell me what is troubling you."

Narrator: And all the girls cried.

GIRLS: We to have our appendix out too!

"Voila!" Dainelle said, "Our scars!"

"Look, a B!" said Nicole.

"And look! A Tree!" said Chloe.

"Look at me!" said Lulu.

"And me!" said Anna.

"Look at me, Miss Clavel!" said Riley proudly.

Miss Clavel laughed . "Good night, little girls. Thank the Lord you are well. And now, go to sleep," she said.

Narrator: Said Miss Clavel.

Miss Clavel laughs as she approaches the door.

Narrator: She turned out the light and closed the door. And that's all there is. There isn't any more

Madeline is shown in uniform winking to the audience.

Girls: Who's the little girl

tripping down my street?

Madeline, oh Madeline

Who's the little girl

Makes my life a treat?

Madeline, oh Madeline

Who's the funny face

with a sunny grin

Turning her face into mine?

Who's the neat! little Packing

In the whole wide world?

It's Madeline

Chole: Who's the little sparkle

Who can light my day?

Girls: Madeline, oh Madeline

Nicole : Who can get me going

So I have to play?

Girls: Madeline, oh Madeline

Who can bounce my heart

Like a rubber ball

Til I'm giggling all the way?

There's nobody like her

In the whole wide world

Like Madeline
