Chapter 16: Prelude To Disaster! Team Rocket Strikes Back!

Tim - "Venomoth is unable to battle! Delphox wins! All four of Gym Leader Janine's Pokémon are unable, so the winner is the challenger, Michael Masi!"

Nothing but silence at first, then loud cheering could be heard. Janine, meanwhile, silently returned her Venomoth, knowing she had truly lost. She and Michael then met at mid-field.

Janine - "Well, like my dad yesterday, I got beat hands down. Thanks for the fun battle anyway, Michael."

Michael - "Not at all Janine. I should say the same to you anyway."

Tim then walked over with the Soul Badge in its tray, which Janine then picked up.

Janine - "And in accordance with Pokémon League rules, I award you the Soul Badge."

Janine held out the badge, which Michael happily took.

Michael - "Alright! Gym win number 5! We just won the Soul Badge!"

Swampert and Delphox gave each other a fist bump in celebration.

Koga - "So what are you and your friends gonna do now Michael?"

Michael - "Mostly just return to the Pokemon Center and prepare for our trip to Saffron City, where I'll battle Sabrina's dad Jake for the Marsh Badge. And take care of Team Rocket there too."

Lance - "What do you mean by that?"

Michael quickly explained about the current events that were happening in Saffron City. Erika also apologized for not coming to Lance sooner about her Team Rocket problem in Celadon.

Lance - "It's ok Erika. You still would've needed proof for me to believe you, even if you had said anything back then."

Erika - "Thank you Lance."

Lance - "Anyway. For now, let's take care of things here. Afterwards, Koga. I want you and the gym leaders to head straight to Saffron and check on Jake and Sylvanna. Help defend Saffron from Team Rocket if needed. Meanwhile, I'll return to HQ and see if Lorelei, Bruno, and Agatha, along with Will and Karen, to help with that."

Lance then saw Sabrina.

Lance - "Don't worry Sabrina. We'll make sure to look after your parents. You're safe with Michael and the others in the meantime."

Sabrina - "Thank you."

Tai then quickly brought out his phone and fired off a quick text.

Yang - "Who you messaging dad?"

Tai - "Qrow. Quickly informed him of what's going on right now in Saffron. Just waiting for a reply."

No sooner does Tai say that does he indeed get a message.

Ruby - "That was quick."

Tai quickly read the message from Qrow.

Tai - "Ah good. He and Winter are already in Saffron City and are watching over Jake and Sylvanna right now. Just let me tell him that me, Ghira, and the gym leaders, along with Lance and the Elite Fours of Kanto and Johto, are coming to assist them."

Tai sends a quick reply.

Tai - "Ok message sent. I'll check for a reply from Qrow on the way to Saffron."

Michael - "Ok then. Let's head to the Pokémon Center so we can get ready for our separate journeys. As well as update the professors on my PokéDex."

Everyone - "Right."

The entire party, for its current size, then returned to the Pokémon Center. There Michael and Janine got their Pokémon healed, and Michael contacted the professors while that was going on.

Michael - "Hello everyone."

Professors - "Hello Michael."

Michael then noticed two new faces among the professors.

Michael - "I see we have some new faces here."

Oak - "Yes. They are professors Sada and Turo. They're the reason behind the Generation 9 section of your PokéDex."

Michael - "I see. Well then. It's an honor to meet you both Professor Sada and Professor Turo."

Sada/Turo - "Likewise Michael."

Rowan - "Ah Akira. I see you're with your brother right now."

Akira - "Yeah. I'll return home to Pokémon Island after everyone else leaves Fuchsia City."

Birch - "What's the problem?"

Michael - "Well..."

Michael quickly explained the current situation up in Saffron City to the professors.

Sycamore - "That's not good to hear."

Kukui - "I agree. But I'm also sure Michael and the others will find a way to overcome it."

Elm - "Now there's something we can all agree on."

Oak - "Anyway. Back to the matter at hand. Time to show us how your PokéDex is coming along Michael."

Michael - "Sure thing Professor Oak."

Michael turned towards the source of the voice. He saw three women standing a few feet away from him.

? - "Are you Michael Masi?"

Michael - "Yes, I am. May I ask what you three need?"

?/?/? - "We challenge you to a battle!"

Michael was surprised at first, but then smirked.

Michael - "I accept your challenge then. May I ask for your names too?"

? - "I'm Gawr Gura, a pure Water-Type user from Heahea City in Alola. But you can just call me Gura."

? - "Ninomae Ina'nis, a dual Water-Type and Ghost-Type user. But my friends just call me Ina. I'm from Sootopolis City in Hoenn."

? - "Name's Calliope Mori. A pure Ghost-Type user from Ecruteak City in Johto. But you can just call me Calli."

Michael - "I see. It's nice to meet you three. I'm guessing your challenging the league too then?"

Gura - "Yep! And if one of our group of friends wins it, it's a win for the entire group."

Michael - "I can respect that. So, how are we doing these battles?"

Ina - "Since double battles are a specialty in Hoenn, Gura and I will face you in one. We'll each use one Pokemon, while you use two to balance things out."

Calli - "Then you'll fight me one-on-one."

Michael - "Alright then."

Michael then turned back to the professors.

Michael - "Sorry for ending it early like this."

Oak - "Not at all Michael."

Juniper - "Yeah. Anyway. Have fun battling."

Michael - "Will do."

Michael then ended the call and led everyone else outside. Twilight then noticed that Clair wasn't following them.

Twilight - "You coming Clair?"

Clair - "I'll stay here for now and wait for Swampert and Delphox for Michael. In case they start wondering where he is."

Michael - "Thanks Clair. Here."

Michael had a screen appear in front of Clair.

Michael - "For you three once they get out."

Clair - "Thanks."

Michael and the others then went to the beach south of the city, where Gura brought out her Gyarados.

Gura - "You don't mind if Ina and I command our Pokémon from the back of my Gyarados?"

Michael - "Not at all."

Gura and Ina quickly got on Gyarados's back and set out into the water a good distance away from the shore.

Gura/Ina - "Go Sharpedo/Jellicent!"

Michael - "Sceptile, Decidueye I choose you!"

Lance - "I'll act as the ref for this double battle. Begin!"

Gura - "Agility Sharpedo!"

Ina - "And you use Acid Armor Jellicent!"

Michael - "Stay ready for anything you two."

Sceptile/Decidueye - "Right."

Turn #2

Gura - "Ice Fang on Sceptile Sharpedo!"

Ina - "Shadow Ball on Decidueye Jellicent!"

Ice Fang's Current Power: 65 x 2 = 130

Shadow Ball's Current Power: 80 + 40 = 120 x 2 = 240

Michael smirked as his opponents got in close.

Michael - "Time your dodges, you two! Then strikes back with everything you have!"

Sceptile/Decidueye - "Right!"

Then before anyone could say anything, Sceptile and Decidueye struck. Both grass starters dodged the incoming attacks and rushed their opponents.

Michael - "Sceptile! Dragon Leaf Break! Decidueye! Leaf Shackle!"

Leaf Blade's Current Power: 90 + 45 = 135

Spirit Shackle's Current Power: 80 + 40 = 120

Dragon Leaf Break's Current Power: 80 + 135 = 215 + 75 = 290 x 2 = 580 x 2 = 1,160

Leaf Shackle's Current Power: 135 + 120 = 255 x 2 = 510 x 2 = 1,020

Both combo moves hit their targets, quickly knocking them out.

Lance - "Sharpedo and Jellicent are unable to battle! Sceptile and Decidueye win! So, the winner of the double battle is Michael!"

Gura - "Rats!"

Ina - "Well that's a downer."

Both girls then quickly returned their Pokémon and came back to the shore, where Gura also returned her Gyarados.

Ina - "Sorry Calli."

Calli - "Don't worry, you two. I'll got some revenge for you both."

Gura - "Please do. I refuse to accept this loss unless you lose too."

Calli - "Gee thanks for the vote of confidence..."

Calli then walked forward to battle Michael.

Michael - "This battle will be 1-v-1, right?"

Calli - "Correct. Go Dusknoir!'

Michael - "Greninja I choose you!"

Greninja Vs. Dusknoir

Lance - "Begin!"

Turn #1

Michael - "Dark Pulse Greninja!"

Calli - "Answer back with Thunder Punch Dusknoir!"

Dark Pulse's Current Power: 80 + 40 = 120 x 2 = 240

Thunder Punch's Current Power: 75 x 2 = 150

Both moves met in a stalemate, but Dark Pulse slowly won out.

Michael - "Good job Greninja."

Greninja - "Thanks."

Calli - "You ok there Dusknoir?"

Dusknoir - "Just fine lady Calli."

Turn #2

Michael - "Dark Pulse again Greninja!"

Calli - "Not so fast Michael! We'll show you that you aren't the only one who can use combo moves! Dusknoir! Break through that Dark Pulse and hit Greninja with Thunder Break!"

Michael - "Thunder Break?!"

Thunder Break's Current Power: 75 + 75 = 150 x 2 = 300 x 2 = 600

The attacks met again, but this time Dusknoir smashed her way through Greninja's Dark Pulse and hit him head-on with Thunder Break's full power.

Michael - "Greninja!"

Greninja tried to stand up, but was overcome by paralysis.

Michael - "Damn."

Calli - "Alright! Time for a comeback Dusknoir! Thunder Break again!"

Dusknoir - "On it!"

Dusknoir struck again. Michael fell to his knees in defeat.

Michael - "I've... I've lost..."

Greninja then slowly got to his feet.

Greninja - "We're not... Done yet..."

Michael - "Greninja…"

Greninja - "Until I'm knocked out, this battle is far from over!"

Michael was shocked at hearing Greninja's vow, then smirked and chuckled.

Michael - "You're right Greninja. this battle is indeed far from over."

Both Twilight and Sabrina felt a massive energy coming from Michael and Greninja.

Twilight - "Please tell me you feel that too Sabrina."

Sabrina - "I do..."

Yang - "What's wrong you two?"

Ruby - "Don't worry Twilight. Weiss and I feel it too."

Rainbow - "What are you guys talking about?"

Weiss - "Something's going on with Michael and Greninja. And we think it'll turn this battle in their favor."

(Music Ends)

Meanwhile, Michael and Greninja continued smirking.

Calli - "Just what are they doing?"

Turn #3

Michael - "Extrasensory!"

Calli - "Just dodge it Dusknoir. They're on their last legs anyway."

Dusknoir easily dodged the Psychic-Type attack.

Dusknoir - "Weak."

Michael - "Let's go, Greninja!"

The both of them roared as Greninja was suddenly surrounded by a small vortex of water, along with Greninja also taking a different form from within the vortex as well.

Gura - "What the-?"

Michael - "Greninja! Dark Ice Shuriken!"

Calli - "Dusknoir! Thunder Break!"

Water Shuriken's Current Power: 20 + 10 = 30

Dark Ice Shuriken's Current Power: 120 + 90 = 210 + 30 = 240 x 2 = 480 x 3 = 1,440

Both attacks met head-on, but Dusknoir was quickly overpowered by the three large shuriken thrown at her.

Michael - "Greninja! Show off your true speed this time! Dark Ice Shuriken!"

Calli - "Thunder Break once more Dusknoir!"

Both Pokémon rushed to meet each other, then Greninja suddenly completely out sped Dusknoir and hit her with his combo move, knocking her out.

(Music Ends)

Lance - "Dusknoir is unable to battle! Greninja wins! So then Michael wins the battle."

Calli - "Aw man."

Michael returned Greninja and walked over to the female trio. He then held out his hand.

Michael - "Hey thanks for the fun battle."

Calli took Michael's hand and shook it.

Calli - "Same to you."

Michael also shook hands with Gura and Ina as well.

Gura - "Hopefully we can battle you again sometime during the league."

Ina - "Yeah. And perhaps you can battle some more of our friends ahead of time too."

Michael - "When the time comes. Until then, you all take care now."

Michael and the others then departed from the beach and returned to the Pokémon Center for the time being. He handed Sceptile, Decidueye, and Greninja over to Nurse Joy, then returned to the others.

Fluttershy - "So what do we do now?"

Akira - "Well I'm gonna return to my lab on Pokemon Island. And don't worry Michael. I'll inform Professor Sycamore about what happened to Greninja during the battle with Calli."

Michael - 'Thanks Akira. Safe travels sis."

Akira - "Same to you all as well."

She then walked outside the Pokemon Center and called out her Skarmory and hopped on her back before taking off into the air.

Akira - "Bye guys!"

Everyone - "Bye Akira!"

Soon Akira was high in the sky and out of sight. Then Michael returned to the others just as Nurse Joy brought out Sceptile, Decidueye, and Greninja.

Michael - "You three ok?"

Sceptile - "I'm doing fine."

Decidueye - "Same here."

Greninja - 'I guess I am too."

Michael - "Don't worry Greninja. Akira said that she'd inform professor Sycamore about what happened. And we can use the time during the trip to Saffron to work on accessing your new power with trouble."

Greninja - "Right."

Soon everyone was ready to leave. The party then left Fuchsia City to the East, entering Route 15. On the Route, Ruby caught her Scyther. She then quickly gave her the Metal Coat and used the Link Box to get her Scizor.

Ruby - "Yay! I finally have a Scizor!"

Yang - "Congrats Ruby. That means you are the only other one of us besides Michael to have a full team of six Pokémon."

Ruby - "I may want a Skarmory though after seeing Akira's. So, I'll leave at least one of my current team at home with mom and dad before we all leave for Johto."

Weiss - "I'm sure a few of us will do the same before leaving for Johto too."

Michael then went about filling up his PokéDex, getting a Chansey encounter, along with catching a Tauros, Pinsir, as well as two Scyther.

Fluttershy - "Why two Scyther's Michael?"

Rarity - "Kleavor?"

Michael - "Kleavor."

Blake - "Isn't that Scyther's branched evolution from Hisui?"

Michael - "Yes, it is. That means that this is my first Pokemon from Hisui too."

Twilight - "Congrats to you for that Michael."

Michael - "Thanks Twilight. Anyway, let's continue our travels."

They battled the trainers along the way through Routes 15 and 14. During one of the battles, Yang's Gabite and Fraxure evolved into Garchomp and Haxorus respectively. Soon night arrived and the party found a clearing to camp in for the night. While the others were eating dinner, Michael and Blake had decided to remove the everstone they had placed on their Eevee. Suddenly, both Eevee's began glowing. When the light disappeared, a pair of Umbreon's, one normal and the other shiny, stood in the place of both Eevee's.

Michael - "Sweet! We both have an Umbreon now Blake."

Blake - "I know right! This is amazing! Congrats on evolving you two."

Um - "Thanks Blake. I assure you both Bre and I won't let you down."

Michael - "We know you two won't. And clever play on the names to help us be able to tell u both apart."

Bre - "Hehe. Thanks."

Soon the party finished dinner and went to sleep, with most of Michael's Pokemon acting as guard.

-Somewhere In Kanto-

Giovanni was standing in his office in Team Rocket HQ, he knew the time was near.

Giovanni - "Now then. Time is of the essence."

-Back On Route 14-

Morning finally came. Michael got up early and got into some training with Greninja.

Greninja - "So what are we doing first?"

Michael - "Tai-chi."

Greninja - "How's tai-chi gonna help us here?"

Michael - "Simple really. From what Akira and Twilight told me, I was copying your movements during the battle when your new form was activated. However, I said to them that the only reason we achieved it at all was pure instinct."

Greninja - "So then tai-chi will help us achieve it easier?"

Michael - "Exactly. By using tai-chi, it'll be easier for the two of us to achieve your new form."

Greninja - "How's your inner soul training coming along by the way?"

Michael - "Pretty good. Riagon's a hell of a teacher though. I've made sure to take her lessons to heart."

Greninja - "That's good to hear."

Soon Greninja and Michael begin their tai-chi training. The others slowly woke up and watched the training in silence. Then Michael and Greninja took a short break.

Michael - "You getting the hang of it Greninja?"

Greninja - "Pretty much. I also see what you were saying about using tai-chi to help us with our synchronization."

Michael - "How so?"

Greninja - "The more in sync we are, the easier to achieving my new form gets."

Michael - "While that's true, don't forget that we can't just take it for granted. Constant practice, even after something becomes second nature to anyone, is truly the best way to master it."

Greninja - "Agreed."

Then before they could continue training, Twilight walked forward with her two Eevee's.

Michael - "Oh right. Blake and I got our Umbreon's last night. Go ahead then Twilight."

Twilight removed the Everstone from her Eevee's, which caused them to glow. Then two new Pokémon took their place.

Espeon/Sylveon - "Hello!"

Twilight - "Yay! I finally have Espeon and Sylveon!"

Sabrina - "Wished I caught an Eevee now..."

Michael - "Don't worry Sabrina. We're gonna head back to Fuchsia City the same we reached there the first time. So you can get an Eevee along the way."

Sabrina - "Yay!"

Soon the training continued, with Empoleon willingly acting as a target as Michael and Greninja slowly got used to their new power.

Greninja - "Thanks for the help Empoleon."

Empoleon - "Not at all little bro."

Then the party cleaned up camp, followed by reaching Route 13, where Michael caught a Farfetch'd. then they finally made it to Route 12, where the other sleeping Snorlax was. Michael thought about bringing out the Poké Flute, but then changed his mind and brought out his Ocarina instead.

Weiss - "You sure about playing that over the Flute."

Michael - "I mostly just want to see if my Ocarina works the same way."

Michael played the melody on his Ocarina. Then the others watched amazed as Snorlax woke up.

Snorlax - "Thank you for waking me up."

Michael - "Not at all Snorlax."

Snorlax then saw where he was.

Snorlax - "Oh dear. I apologize for blocking your way."

Michael - "Not a problem good sir."

As Snorlax was moving out of the way, Ruby felt her phone go off.

Ruby - "What the..."

She pulled out her phone to see the message, and what she saw shocked her to the core.

Michael - "What's wrong Ruby?"

Ruby couldn't find the words at first. But when she did, everyone else was just as shocked as she was.

Ruby - "Saffron City...has been overrun by Team Rocket."

Everyone - "Whaaaaaattttt?!"
