Lucifer sat at the bar at LUX with a sour look on his face. He stared his father, who was sitting about twenty feet away. The bastard didn't even try to hide the fact that he was watching him. Lucifer didn't understand why he was even there. He could spy on him just as well from the Silver City. Why did he have to force his presence on him and invade his home? Well, the answer came easily enough. The bastard was clearly trying to torture him some more. As if sending him to Hell wasn't enough.
Just then, Chloe made her way over to Lucifer. "Hey."
"Detective," Lucifer greeted without taking his eyes off his father.
Chloe followed his eyes to his father, who was sitting at a table by himself several feet away. "Lucifer, if you don't want your dad here, kick him out.
Lucifer snorted. "As if that would do any good. My father is God. He'll do whatever he wants."
Chloe resisted the urge to berate Lucifer about his metaphors. A very small part of her was starting to wonder if they really were metaphors. Most of her didn't believe Lucifer was delusional, but Amenadiel's and his father's words were in her head now. "Your dad does not have the right stalk you. I can make him leave if you want."
"My father has the right to do whatever he wants. He takes that right. Believe me, nothing you say will make him leave unless he wants to," Lucifer said before taking a large gulp of his drink. He then got up and headed for the piano. He needed unwind and that was the best way to do it.
Chloe, meanwhile, continued to stare at Lucifer's father for a few more seconds. She then got up and headed towards him.
Samuel smiled at the detective. "Hello, detective Decker."
Chloe didn't turn the smile. "Doctor Chambers. I told you, you don't get to do this. You don't get to force your presence on to Lucifer."
"Actually, what you said is that I couldn't follow my son behind his back. I'm not. He's well aware that I'm here and that I'm keeping an eye on him. And please, call me Samuel," he said.
"You don't get to stalk him! I could get a restraining order against you," Chloe said. Well, she would need Lucifer to sign off on it first, but she could make it happen.
"Actually, you couldn't, Detective. I have medical and legal guardianship over my son. I am well within my rights to watch him," Samuel said calmly.
Chloe stopped dead after hearing that. If that was true, he was right. There was no recourse she had to stop him from following Lucifer. However, she wasn't certain she believed him. "I can easily find out if you're lying about that."
"I'm aware. I would expect you to look into it. You'll find that I'm being truthful," Samuel said. If she looked into it, she would also find out that Sam had been hospitalized, and that that was the reason Samuel had guardianship. He hadn't wanted her to know that at first as, as she would either lie to Sam about it or confront him about it. Either way, it would alienate Sam against her and possibly make him worse. However, Chloe Decker needed to know, especially since Sam helped her track down criminals. It was for both their safety that she knew.
Chloe sat down across from the man. "I'm not buying that Lucifer's crazy. He doesn't fit the pattern of that," she said. Even though Lucifer spoke a lot about being the devil. He was always lucid. He knew what was happening around him.
"Detective, as a member of law enforcement, I would assume that you've seen many mentally ill individuals. You should know they don't all present the same," Samuel told her.
Chloe had to admit he wasn't wrong about that. Mental illness came in a variety of forms. However, Lucifer just didn't seem crazy. He seemed nothing like any of the mentally ill people she'd met. At most, he seemed eccentric. However, if his father had guardianship of him, there had to be someone who thought he was mentally unstable. "So you're trying to tell me that everything you and Amenadiel have said is true? If that's the case, I still don't trust you. Amenadiel told me you mistreated Lucifer."
"My son claimed I was abusive? I find that difficult to believe," Samuel said. His son had made quite a few errors lately, but he did not believe Amenadiel would tell anyone that he was abusive. He knew the weight that carried.
"He said Lucifer had a troubled childhood," Chloe told him.
"And you took that to mean I abused my children? I suppose in your line of work that would be the first thing you'd think. My son did have a troubled childhood. His mother committed suicide when he was seven. He found the body," Samuel said with a bit of an edge to his voice. While he understood why the detective thought it, he did not appreciate being accused of being abusive to his children. He had never raised a hand to his children
Chloe felt like an ass after hearing that. She'd jumped to a conclusion without knowing all the facts. She knew better than to do that. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have accused you of anything without proof."
"Well, I don't appreciate the accusation, but as I said, I can understand why you would think it. I don't know what my son may have seen that night. He's never spoken about it. All I know is that when I got home, I had to pry him away from her body," Samuel said in a sad and bitter tone. He loved his wife and grieved her every day, but sometimes he hated her for what she did to their son. Sam had never truly gotten over what happened that night.
"That's horrible. I'm really sorry," Chloe said. She never knew Lucifer went through something like that. Lucifer had mentioned once that his mother abandoned him, but she didn't think he meant like this. How could his mother do that to him? Trixie was just a little older than he was at the time, and Chloe couldn't imagine leaving her like that.
Samuel nodded before turning towards his son, who was at the piano playing a song. He'd missed hearing his son play. It had been a very long time since he got to listen to it.
Chloe listened herself for a few minutes before speaking again. "How did he really get the scars on his back?"
Samuel turned back to her and frowned. "What scars?"
"Lucifer has two large scars where his shoulder blades are. You didn't know about it?" Chloe asked. He could be lying about that, but she didn't think so. He seemed genuinely shocked and concerned.
"No. He must have gotten them within the last few years because he didn't have them in Pennsylvania," Samuel said. He was once again concerned for his son's state of mind. Sam couldn't have caused those injuries to himself, but that didn't mean his delusions didn't play a part in how he got hurt. "What did he say about it?"
Chloe hesitated. She didn't feel comfortable telling Lucifer's father something, he told her in private. She had only brought it up because she thought Samuel knew. "I'm not comfortable answering that right now."
"Detective, if something happened to my son, I have a right to know," Samuel said firmly.
"It's nothing that seems to be affecting him now. He's not in any danger and I'm not willing to break his confidence, at least not until I know for sure you're telling me the truth," Chloe said. If it turned out Lucifer was mentally ill, she would have to rethink her position on the matter because those scars would be result of that. However, at the moment, she wasn't sure that Samuel was telling the truth. He seemed to be truthful, but she couldn't be sure. She was going to have to look into the matter.
Samuel considered her words for a moment. He didn't like it, but he could understand Detective Decker's position. "Very well. I would like to ask you a favor though. When you confirm what I've told you, don't confront Sam with it, at least not until we've spoken again."
Chloe nodded. If he was telling the truth, that was probably for the best. She didn't want to make Lucifer worse by confronting him with something he wasn't ready to face. "I can agree to that."
"Thank you," he said.
Chloe got up and headed back to the bar. She was going to get another quick drink and go home. She had a lot of thinking to do.
