When Dolores had gotten up early so she could start her day with minimal noise she didn't expect to come out of her room to find twenty or so of Antonio's animals sitting there, some of them were asleep, but as soon as the conscious ones saw her they started howling, squawking and making all other kinds of noises and waking the other animals up who joined in the ruckus. As the noise got louder and louder it began to overwhelm Dolores and she covered her ears with her hands, tensed her shoulders, and began rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet.
Camilo was the first person to leave their room and the poor thing looked like he hadn't slept a wink.
"What in all of Encanto is going on?" he mumbled, rubbing his eyes. He turned to see Dolores Surrounded by Antonio's animals when she tried to walk over to him the birds began bumping into her pushing her back and she tensed up again. She was barely aware of her surroundings as he said. "Gosh darn it, can't I get one night's rest without something happening.
By this point, everybody but Antonio was out of their rooms and grumbling about it being too early. Pepa had a storm cloud that she wasn't even trying to shoo away and Mirabel looked like she was going to fall over. As Dolores forced herself to look around she noticed that a good portion of her family looked half-dead, as if even without the Animals acting strange they hadn't slept at all.
"I think Antonio is too far into his room to hear anything out here," Mirabel yelled over the sound of the animals and Pepa's wind, "I'm gonna go grab him." as Mirabel entered Antonio's room Dolores' mother called out to her.
"Cariño, are you ok?"
Dolores nodded tensely and let out another squeak.
Antonio and Mirabel came running out of his room "Guy's what are you doing get away from Dolores." As soon as the animals heard Antonio's voice they stopped swarming Dolores and ran over to him. "What in Encanto are you guys doing?" Antonio asked his voice had a strange tone to it as if he wasn't saying the full truth but Dolores chalked it up to the fact that he too looked like he got no sleep that night. "Are you ok? I don't know what got into them!"
"I'm… I'm ok" Dolores said, trying to relax her shoulders and stop rocking but she just couldn't. After a few seconds, she felt her mother's tight embrace and cold rain falling against her skin. She normally would have pushed her mother away but the hug was tight, so tight most people would have found it uncomfortable, but she found it grounding like a weighted blanket. The rain helped to cool her down, she knew her temperature couldn't have risen too much in the past minute or two but she still felt like her skin was on fire.
"It's ok just breath" her mother whispered, giving Dolores a sound to focus on instead of everything around her, and that wouldn't hurt her ears in their vulnerable state. "Let's head into your room for a minute" Pepa switched from hugging Dolores to squeezing her shoulders with one arm as she led her back into her room.
They simply sat there for a minute Dolores regaining her composure and her mother rocking back and forth with her trying not to soak Dolores' bed. Once Dolores' breathing returned to normal her mother shifted slightly on the bed.
"Are you feeling ok now?" she looked to the door not trying to force eye contact as Dolores said.
"Ya, I'll be ok," As she said this she found her words moved much smoother than before now that her brain wasn't clouded with all of the distractions from earlier, "Thanks for helping me calm down."
"Of course querida, do you want another minute or should we head out now?"
"I think now is good, I'm sure Abuela has already got everyone working."
"Even if we leave right now you still need to take it easy for another hour or two, we all should after that fiasco."
"Ok Mama," Dolores said standing and straightening her skirt. "I'll just help around the house for a little bit before heading out into town."
"Ok, fine but if you need to come straight back to your room, if Abuela tries to stop you I'll give her a stern talking to," Pepa said standing next to her daughter.
"I'm sure it'll be fine, she's been trying to be understanding lately."
"Ya, but I have a feeling she'll be a little grumpy today, she's been sleeping a lot more lately I doubt waking up early will make her happy."
Dolores sighed as they opened the door and the sounds hit her again. In the little time, they had been in her room the family had already mobilized. Tía Julieta was already preparing breakfast and food for the village. Tío Agustine was in the back chopping wood for the stove luckily he was far away from any beehives. Mirabel was humming and patching a rip Antonio had gotten during a tumble the other day. Dolores felt bad because she had been distracted in town and hadn't realized he had fallen. The only reason she found out was because Camilo had begged her not to tell Pepa or Félix. She had a good laugh telling him that she hadn't known before and seeing his face pale as he hissed something about not telling them either way and running off.
She listened to the rest of her family when she heard Antonio and Félix talking.
"I didn't mean to. Is she going to be ok?"
"Of course Antonio, sometimes her powers just overwhelm her, she just needs a minute to calm down, and then she'll be right back on her feet"
"Are you sure it seemed really bad this morning, should I go check on her or would that just make it worse, does she need Tía Julieta's food?"
"I told you, Antonio she'll be fine, I'm sure she be out in a minute two"
Dolores tried to focus on her mom again "I'm going to go check on Antonio he sounds really worried."
"Dolores, what did I say about taking it easy?"
"I know I'll go play a game with him or something. Julieta said we needed to be watching him anyway"
"Ok, just be careful."
