CHAPTER 12

Draco stepped out of his corner and approached his mother and said, "My goodness mother, you sure know how to make and keep friends. You have a way of making them comfortable at a party. I'm sure they will just love to return to your next soiree." He smirked and fake applauded.

Narcissa said, "I didn't know they were standing there listening. Oh what am I to do now? She will never give me the time of day now." She said depressed. "Perhaps an apology."

Draco said, "You could try to do that someday later on, but I would leave them alone tonight. The damage is done. It was not so much you wanting to drag her around calling her your friend, that did so much damage. It was the spiteful opinions of decimating Professor Snape's character and the fact of her being with him that did it. Really mother, haven't you learned anything after what we've lived through and survived. We cannot afford to treat all people….. as we used to. Our political and social status is forever changed and you continue as before. You will be the one shunned as a pariah now."

Narcissa nodded, "I've made a complete mess of things. I really thought I could have the last descendant of Merlin as a friend, but now I've gone and botched it. What a mess." She looked miffed at the woman she was talking to and said, "Why didn't you tell me? Didn't you see them standing there?"

Her friend and her husband standing there shrugged like they didn't do anything wrong. The woman said "How was it to know it was them. I was not facing that way anyway." She stuck her nose in the air. Her husband smiled to himself and thought, 'Suits them right. I saw them, but I was not inclined to help the harpies. After all, I've never said a word all night, but I did watch them both put their foot in it.'

The woman continued, "I guess your plan will be….. altered now, Cissy. It's a shame too. Come Joseph." She took the arm of her husband and left the room.

Marina and Severus were dancing on the ballroom floor. Smiling and quietly chuckling in their own world. Marina said, "You are a lovely dancer. Marina said, "Let's go eat something, my Severus. I think I will need the energy tonight after we go home." He kissed her hand and they walked over to the fancy buffet in the dinner hall set up. They made themselves plates and took a glass of wine and sat down at a vacant table.

Severus said, "I guess, Cissy's plan of coveting you as a social crown on her head, has failed." Marina took a bite of Duck à l'orange.

Marina swallowed her bite and took a sip of Chardonnay. She said, "You would think that after the war, social and political standings have changed for her. Usually when the tides have changed, you swim in a different direction to ease your strokes, not straight ahead into the surf."

Severus sipping his wine and said smiling, "I like the sea analogy, my clever girl." She giggled. A man approached their table. Severus knew Maximilian Malfoy, he was not a death eater but promoted Voldemort's agenda and ideals. And he was Lucius' cousin.

Maximilian said in a condescending smooth arrogant tone, "Well Severus Snape, it seems your lot in life has improved, by such beauty that accompanied you to my cousin's party? So who is this enchanting creature?"

Severus said, "Professor Marina Myrddin, this is Maximilian Malfoy."

Marina looked at him with his white hair and pointy nose. He was about late thirties, she guessed. He was not a handsome man at all for the arrogance he weileds, she knew he thought so. Maximilian said, "My, my, a professor? Beauty and brains. What is your mastery in, my dear?"

Marina said, "Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, and Defence Against the Dark Arts."

Maximilian's eyes widened and said condescendingly, "Surely, you jest, no one woman has four masteries. You're much too young to have so many achievements."

Marina stood up and took offense saying, "Believe what you will. It's documented. It does not matter what you believe I can achieve. Or, is it because I'm a woman, I wonder? You think all women must only achieve status through marriage and that's all they are good for, huh? You, sir, have insulted my intelligence and the Ancient House of Myrddin, who have a historical line of high scholars, male and female." Maximilian's eyes bugged out of his head at her. He just made a huge social blunder.

He stuttered, "Mer…Merlin? You're from the blood of M… Merlin? I… I'm sorry, dear lady. I did not mean what I said, it was foolish of me. Please, excuse me." He hurried away, like a dog tucking tail.

Severus said, "Now's the time to eat up. That strutting peacock will have your name spread far and wide in minutes. The curious will clamor for your attention soon, my beautiful Marina."

She shrugged, "Like I ever cared about status or a name I've carried around all my life. You are all I care about, my Severus. Only your love and companionship matters. The rest is bunk." He smiled at her and chuckled.

He said, "I love you, my beautiful dove."

She leaned over and kissed his lips. She looked in his eyes and said softly, "Only you. I will love only you, my Severus." She smiled, pulled out her lipstick and mirror and reapplied it. She took a sip of her wine. "Shall we dance again?" They stood up from the table and walked back to the ballroom arm in arm. People were beginning to stare at them already.

They ignored it and he swirled her out on the dance floor. They moved and glided so easily with each. She had her arm on his shoulder as she whispered in his ear, "If they try to cut in, I refuse to leave your arms for a grabby sod." He started holding her closer with his hand on her lower back with fingers spread possessively.

They left the dance floor, as eyes followed them, and headed to the coat check. They each donned their cloaks and she took his arm as they left out the door of the manor to apparate home.
