Chapter 23: The Recovery

Over the next few days I began to recover from the virus. My grandfather attributed my recovery due to my vampire genes. I was incredibly lucky as he put it.

My brother was an entirely different story though. He was getting worse and that was scaring me. I couldn't lose my brother. I just couldn't. I wished that there was something I could've done to switch places with him.

I stayed by my brother's side all day and all night even. As much as grandpa tried to keep me away, because he feared I'd get sick again, I wouldn't listen. I'd abandoned him once already when he needed me. I was not going to make that same mistake again.

I asked grandpa if he could change my brother into a vampire. But then he reminded me of the law. Nelson was way too young to be turned.

When I wasn't worrying about my brother I was worrying about my parents. We hadn't even begun to plan how we were going to get them back from the Volturi because most of our time was taken up caring for my brother.

Oh and it was rare that they left us alone. I wasn't sure what they were more afraid of. Me wandering off and getting kidnapped again or my brother suddenly getting more sick. I really hoped it was the second one.

So when I woke up one morning and found a note from the family saying they'd gone hunting and wouldn't be back for several hours I was shocked.

I went to go check up on Nelson who was thankfully still alive. He was barely breathing but he was still alive. I went down to the kitchen to get something to eat but there wasn't anything.

I gathered what little cash I had left to go buy something to eat for breakfast. As I was walking around outside I realized that this was the first time I'd been outside in a long time. It felt oddly refreshing.

I heard what sounded like an animal pain nearby and I stopped. I looked up ahead and saw what looked like a young Labrador puppy laying there in the middle of the road. It looked as if the puppy had been hit by a car and left for dead.

Then I acted without thinking. I rushed into the road to grab the puppy. I heard cars honking at me. Yeah I'd run into the road without looking. Stupid. I know.

I sat down at a nearby bench and put the puppy down. He was an adorable little puppy with yellow fur. A lot or the fur had been scraped off when he'd gotten hit. He couldn't even walk. It looked like at least two of his legs were broken and God only knows what else. There were several cuts all over his body that were still bleeding.

I reached out to him and he bit me. I felt tears form in my eyes as the pain stung. But then I saw something that made me freeze. The puppy's cuts were healing. I could see the cuts sealing themselves up. His fur regrew where it had been scraped off. He began to walk normally like if there wasn't anything with his legs at all.

His tail wagged as he ran toward me. A million thoughts were racing in my head. I looked at my hand that had been bitten. The wound was already healed.

I took a deep breath. My head began to spin. Did my blood have some kind of magical healing properties? What else could have made this puppy recover so quickly?

Then another thought occured to me in that very second. Maybe, just maybe, I could save my brother. I stood up fast. There wasn't a moment to lose. The way things were going my brother was going to die from COVID-19. We didn't have anything to lose at this point.

I only stopped once on the way home when I heard barking behind me. It was the puppy following me. So I made a decision, the kind you really should think twice about, and decided to bring him home with me. Nelson would love that. He always wanted a dog.

I got home and made a decision. I was going to give my brother some of my blood. There was a bag somewhere here stored with my blood in it. Grandpa had withdrawn some blood because he was curious and wanted to study me.

I poured some of it into a cup. This was crazy. Absolute insanity I kept telling myself over and over as I walked into my brother's room. He was awake and he smiled weakly when he saw me.

"I brought you something that I think might help," I touched his forehead. It was so hot that you could fry an egg on it. I helped him sit up because he wasn't strong enough to do it on his own.

"Drink this,"

He did as I asked and he drank it. I could see a change in him happening in only seconds. He looked stronger. He began to breathe normally. I touched his forehead and his fever had disappeared.

"I don't feel sick," he said shocked.

"I'm not sure you are anymore," I said.

"What was that?" he asked me curiously. "What was that you made me drink?"

I hesitated then I decided that I should just tell him the truth. "It was my blood,"

"Your blood is magical?"

I laughed. "It's something. I don't know. It helped this puppy I found earlier-"

"You found a puppy?!" his eyes lit up with happiness as I handed him the puppy. He started laughing when the puppy licked him.

I bent down to pick up the small yellow lab puppy. "Yes I found him in the street. I think he was hit by a car. He was badly injured. But then he bit me and I think somehow his injuries were healed. That's why I wanted to try giving you my blood,"

"Thank you Nessie," he smiled. "and thank you for the puppy. I love her. I hope I can keep her,"

"Her?"

He shook his head. "This puppy is a girl. Really Nessie? I'm younger than you and even I know the difference in girl body parts and boy body parts,"
