Chapter 3

Preston woke up to his alarm blaring. He didn't get a lot of sleep during the night. Probably a couple of hours tops. His blood was still boiling from the conversation he had with his dad. He swung his legs off the side of his bed and noticed a book that was left on the table next to his bed. He had never seen that book before. He picked it up and noticed a post-it note that was left on the cover. The note read:

This was your mother's spell book. Use it well. She was always prepared and marked some spells that might be useful to you before she died.

I'm so sorry about everything.

-Dad

He ripped the note off of the cover, crumbled it up, and threw it in the trash can in his room. He then put the spell book in his backpack and took out his phone to text Sarah. He didn't want his dad and one of their drivers to take him to school today and he also didn't feel like walking to school alone. After that, he got ready for the day. When he was done, he went back to grab his backpack and looked at his phone. Sarah had replied back to him saying that she was almost there. He walked downstairs and his dad was in the kitchen, which was a surprise because Preston usually made his own breakfast in the morning. Yes, his dad was rich, and they had their own drivers, but his dad never wanted butlers around the house and now it made more sense to Preston why. Preston just walked straight past the kitchen.

"Preston, don't you want some breakfast?" Preston heard his father ask.

The blue ranger just ignored the question and left the house. He walked out of his house and saw Sarah waiting for him.

"Hey. How did it go last night?" Sarah asked and Preston didn't answer. "That bad, huh?" Still no answer. Sarah sighed and put her hoverboard down and it hovered above the ground. She hopped onto it. "Come on. A ride on my hoverboard always makes me feel better." Preston didn't always like riding on her hoverboard because they always seem to crash when they ride together but nodded anyway and hopped on it behind his girlfriend. They rode the hoverboard to school and managed not to crash this time. "Now do you want to talk to me?" Sarah asked when they finally got to school and hopped off the hoverboard.

"Can we go to the base?" Preston asked.

"Sure."

The two of them went to the base. It was still before school, and they had some time before the first bell would ring. They entered the base and Preston was glad that Mick and Redbot were the only ones there.

"Good morning," Mick said to the two rangers.

"Hi," Sarah said.

"What happened last night?" Mick asked Preston.

"Madame Odius was telling the truth," Preston said. "But that's not all. I also found out that I have a brother that I never knew about."

"You were never told that you have a brother?" Sarah asked for clarification.

"No. He said that he didn't tell me to protect me."

"Protect you? From what?"

"From him."

"Why did you need to be protected from him?" Mick asked.

Preston sighed. "I don't know. I cut my dad off before he could explain anymore. I just got so angry." As Preston continued, he balled his hands up into fists and there started to be a red glow around his hands as stuff in the base started floating. "He's been keeping this from me my whole life!"

Mick, Redbot, and Sarah noticed the stuff that was floating around them. Sarah immediately reached out and grabbed Preston's hand to attempt to calm him down. "Preston, please calm down," she said and gestured to what Preston was making happen.

Preston realized what he was doing and unclenched his fists and everything that was floating dropped. "Sorry."

"It's ok," Mick responded. Mick, Redbot, and Sarah all glanced at each other. Preston's magical aura has always been blue. They've never seen him get angry, but it looks like his magical aura changes to red when he gets angry. That could be dangerous in the long run.

Preston reached into his backpack and pulled the spell book out. "My dad gave me this," he said.

Sarah took a look at it. "A spell book?" she asked as she started to briefly browse through the book. "He had this the whole time?"

"Apparently, it was my mother's. He said that she had marked some spells that I might need."

"Well, I might have limited knowledge of magic, but as far as I can tell, your powers are growing," Mick cut in. "Learning these spells is probably not a bad idea."

"There are some battle spells in here that might be useful against Madame Odius's monsters," Sarah said as she closed up the book and handed it back to Preston.

"Ok," Preston said. "I'll start working on learning these spells after school."

"Leave me the spell book," Mick said. "Redbot and I will pick a few and set things up for you to learn the spells."

Preston nodded and handed the spell book to Mick as the warning bell rang.

"We better get to class," Sarah said to Preston.

"We'll be back after school," Preston said to Mick and Redbot.

Mick nodded and Preston and Sarah left the base and went to their first class of the day. All six rangers had their first period together.

"Where were you two?" Brody asked when Preston and Sarah got to class.

Sarah glared at Brody. "We can't want some time alone in the morning since we're a couple." Preston knew that Sarah was doing that for show since he asked her not to say anything about what's going on to the others. Sarah looked over at Preston who was sitting next to her and silently grabbed his hand from underneath the table and squeezed it. She kind of wanted to rip Preston's dad a new one for how he lied to Preston for so long, but the best she could do for now was to help Preston with everything he was going through.
