After grabbing their guns, Todoroki and Deko got in the former's car and drove off to Studio 54, light and siren going.
"Hey Deko…"
"Yes?"
"I just want to let you know that if one of us doesn't make it out of this alive, I've been in love with you ever since I first met you, and I sincerely apologize for any ill will I've born towards you."
Deko smiled. "Don't worry about it, Todoroki! I know you're a genuinely noble soul who's willing to make up for his mistakes! I couldn't have asked for a better boyfriend!"
"Hm."
Soon enough, they reached Studio 54, where a couple of RMPs awaited them in addition to FDNY apparatus. Menendez approached the car as soon as Todoroki and Deko got out.
"What's the situation?" asked Todoroki.
"Well, a bunch of people managed to evacuate, but there may be some people still inside," replied Menendez. "We got this place secure."
"For now. It's time I brought out my last resort…"
Todoroki opened up the Oldsmobile's trunk and pulled out his last resort: a Browning AN/M2 .30 caliber machine gun, modified with an M1919 pistol grip. He grabbed two 250-round boxes of ammo and an M1936 webbed belt.
"Deko, do you mind carrying the ammunition for my machine gun?" asked Todoroki.
Deko smiled. "Not at all!"
"Here…" Todoroki handed Deko the belt. "The ammunition boxes have been modified so they'll clip onto the belt."
Deko put on the belt and put on the ammo boxes using the attached clips. She cracked open the one nearest to Todoroki, and he grabbed the ammo belt, inserted it snugly into the gun, closed the top cover and gave the cocking handle a good, hard yank, thereby readying the weapon.
"Are you ready?" asked Todoroki.
Deko nodded. Without further ado, they bravely charged into the golden doors of Studio 54. There were no vampires to be found in the lobby, but they kept their guns at the ready just in case. Todoroki found it very odd that this was the very same disco that him and Deko had gone dancing at just a few days ago, but he cast that thought aside and focused on the mission. Approaching the doors to the main dance floor, Deko took one hand off of her MAC-10 and opened it for Todoroki. They charged in, and…
"Brethren, we have more food!" said a brunette vampire behind the bar. "Get them!"
Without question, Todoroki opened fire, not only shredding the vampire with 1,300 rounds per minute of .30-06 death, but exploding a few bottles of alcoholic drinks as well. The fact that every fifth round in his ammo belt was an armor-piercing incendiary round also meant that he lit a small fire on the bar. Although whoever was in charge of the lighting had left the disco lights going, Todoroki and Deko did their best not to get distracted as a bunch of vampires charged them. After briefly letting go of his Browning's pistol grip, Todoroki used some ice to block off the staircases to the upper balconies before continuing to fire.
Deko was no slouch with her MAC-10, either, and its compact size and light weight compared to the mighty Browning meant that she had more of an advantage at close range, which was good because more than a few vampires were fast runners and got rather close for comfort. Not helping were some of the Quirks that they possessed: for example, one vampire had a Quirk that allowed him to turn his limbs into metal sword-like blades just like the T-1000, which allowed him to deflect bullets. Todoroki countered this with a fire attack, being careful not to burn the whole club down. Considering all the ice attacks he used today, he needed to warm up, anyhow. Another problematic vampire had a Quirk that allowed him to detach various appendages of his and use them as hand grenades, the explosion size being dependent on what he detached. Not helping was the fact that his limbs could regenerate. However, with some luck, Todoroki and Deko not only managed to dodge the makeshift grenades, but cut down this vampire with a hail of lead.
"Reloading!"
Deko ducked behind a couch and slapped a fresh mag into her MAC-10, while Todoroki covered her. He swung around when he heard a "thump" from someone dropping to the floor. As it turned out, another vampire had used her Quirk to melt the floor above her and come down through the hole. However, Todoroki ventilated her, his gun making an evil buzzsaw-like sound as it fired.
"Deko, I'm out! Open another box!"
"Got it!"
Deko opened another ammo box for Todoroki, so he reloaded while she provided covering fire. He reloaded the Browning just in time, too: a vampire with a flashbulb-like Quirk attempted to blind him, but Deko landed a Detroit Smash and followed up with her MAC-10. Once the temporary blindness wore off, Todoroki noticed that some of the corpses of people that the vampires had fed on were now getting up, so he pumped their guts full of lead, too.
For a moment, no other vampires attacked them, so Todoroki and Deko proceeded cautiously around the dance floor, keeping their guns ready all the while. To Todoroki, everything looked clear, but even so, things felt really off. Logically, all of the vampires seemed dead at the moment, and it certainly looked that way, but he just couldn't shake this evil presence that he was feeling at the moment. He'd felt a similar phenomenon with other vampires, so he had little doubt in his mind that there was still at least one of them still alive somewhere. Right now, everything just felt so surreal with the lights going, the music off and a bunch of corpses littering the parquet dance floor. All of a sudden, two syringes shot at them from out of nowhere, but Todoroki and Deko managed to jump out of the way in time.
"That was close!" said Todoroki. "Come on, Deko, let's show that asshole the power of teamwork!"
However, something was off: Todoroki got no response from Deko.
"Deko?"
Deko heard some evil giggling, so he swung around, only to see…
"Looking for your girlfriend?"
Todoroki didn't want to believe it, but his eyes weren't fooling him: a few feet away from him, there was Himiko Toga, the infamous Binge Drinker he'd been hunting, holding his precious Deko at knifepoint.
"Let her go, Binge Drinker!" said Todoroki.
"Nah, I don't think I'm gonna do that!" said Toga. "She looks too tasty!"
"T-Todoroki…help me!" Deko had tears in her eyes.
"Awww…how adorable! Your precious little girlfriend is crying for your help! I love when my victims beg for their lives!"
"I'm warning you, if you don't let her go, you're going to get 1,300 rounds per minute of pure, unadulterated fury!" said Todoroki.
"My, such tough talk!" said Toga. "Too bad you can't back that promise up!"
"You're screwed, Toga! Either you let her go, or your last few moments will be filled with more regret than you could possibly comprehend!"
"Go ahead, keep up with the tough talk! One more crack out of you, and this young lady's blood will be my dinner!"
"Todoroki, please give up!" said Deko. "I don't wanna die!"
"Yes Todoroki, throw down your gun!" said Toga. "You have a choice: the girl or the mission. What'll it be?"
Todoroki gritted his teeth. As much as he wanted to blow away Toga and save Deko, he realized that the Browning AN/M2, having a high rate of fire and no semi-auto capability, wasn't exactly the best weapon for a hostage situation. Therefore, there was only one logical thing to do…
"OK…you win." Todoroki threw his gun down. "Now please, let my Deko go."
"Thanks!" said Toga. "You just made everything easier for me!"
Toga sunk her fangs into Deko's neck.
"DEKO!" shouted Todoroki.
Furious not only about being tricked, but watching his precious Deko get hurt, Todoroki reached under his jacket, whipped out his Model 29 and blew Toga's head off. Still screaming, he ran over to her, discharging the rest of the cylinder into her lifeless corpse, even repeatedly pulling the trigger when the gun was out of ammo, not stopping until the rage ceased to course through his veins. Trembling, he lowered the big bad hand cannon, satisfied that the infamous Binge Drinker was no more. However, that still didn't resolve one thing…
"Deko!"
Todoroki ran over to Deko, who was still alive, but lying on the floor and losing blood.
"Todoroki…thanks." Deko smiled in spite of the spectre of death looming over her. "I'm glad you tried."
"Deko, don't die on me now!" Todoroki hastily grabbed a white suit jacket from a dead vampire. "Here, put pressure on the wound!"
Deko grabbed the jacket and did her best to stanch the bleeding.
"Come on!" said Todoroki. "I'm going to get you home!"
Outside, Menendez, some other NYPD officers – including members of the Emergency Service Unit – and some FDNY firefighters and paramedics prepared to storm Studio 54 when Todoroki emerged, Deko slumped over one shoulder and his AN/M2 over the other.
"Two-Face, what happened!?" said Menendez.
"I got the Binge Drinker, but she bit Deko!"
"Let's take her to the hospital, then!"
"Don't worry, Menendez, I'll handle this! You and everybody else check the building, got it?"
"Right!"
Todoroki loaded Deko and his machine gun into the Oldsmobile and sped off, light and siren going.
"Deko, listen, stay with me!"
"Todoroki…w-why is everything a bunch of pretty colors?"
"Damn it, Deko, stay awake! I can't have you dying on me!"
Todoroki pushed the gas pedal down as far as he feasibly could. New York City's traffic was still being problematic even though he had the emergency warning equipment going, but with a bit of luck, he got back to the apartment and ran inside with Deko like one of Meat Loaf's bats out of hell. Once he got to her apartment, he laid her down next to the door.
"Deko, your apartment key!"
Still conscious, Deko fumbled around in her coat pocket and produced a key ring. Todoroki took the keys and scrambled to find out which one fit the lock. It took a couple of tries, but he unlocked the door and rushed Deko inside, laying her down on her couch.
"Stay here and try not to move too much," said Todoroki.
"R…right…"
Todoroki rushed to the bathroom and looked around for medical supplies. Fortunately, he found what he was looking for: rubbing alcohol, gauze, cotton balls and medical tape. He then rushed out, hastily applied some rubbing alcohol to a cotton ball and proceeded to disinfect Deko's bite.
"Th…thanks…" said Deko.
"You're welcome." Todoroki broke out the gauze and medical tape next.
"D…don't let me…die…"
"You won't! Just stay awake…"
Deko's eyes slowly began to close.
"Deko, I said stay awake! Deko!? No! No! NO!"
Todoroki had bandaged Deko's bite, but she had fallen unconscious. Fearing the worst, he put his index and middle fingers on her neck to check her pulse. Fortunately, she was still alive, but it was clear to him that unless he did something quickly, then she was gone. Knowing that time was of the essence, he rushed to the cold storage room where the blood was kept, and he proceeded to rifle through the various drawers on the desk in there. He found various Kokuyo Campus notebooks, with titles like "Hero Analysis for the Future", "Analysis for Killing Zombies", "How to Recognize Werewolves", and the like.
After sifting through notebook after notebook, Todoroki finally found one titled "Research on Curing Vampirism". Without delay, he flipped it open to the first page and began reading. While not an expert chemist, he'd gotten good enough grades in high school science classes that he could read Deko's notes with some clarity. However, one obstacle that he encountered in reading these was that she'd written them in a rather haphazard way, with no obvious system in regards to where the notes were placed or how they were sequenced. He did his best, but as he read on through the notes, he was growing increasingly discouraged as he noticed that all of Deko's hypotheses and experiments had ended in failure. Nevertheless, he was determined to salvage a viable cure from all this and save his beloved Deko, so instead of just reading about the failures, he took a little time to determine just why they failed. However, owing to Deko's continued ebb, he had to read as fast as he possibly could, which was easy enough considering he was a real speed reader.
Despite his raw determination, Todoroki wasn't able to glean much on why each cure failed…that is, until he found a note about an experiment that involved potassium wolframate, which gave him a flashback to an experiment that he once conducted in chemistry class that also involved sodium trychtichloride and iron. He figured that sodium trychtichloride must've been the magic ingredient that Deko was missing, so he rifled through a cabinet that contained various chemicals, and much to his good fortune, he found a bottle marked "SODIUM TRYCHTICHLORIDE".
However, only one other obstacle remained: Todoroki didn't know Deko's blood type. Rushing back out to the living room, he rifled through her purse, pulled out her wallet and found her driver's license. Her blood type was O+, same as his, so he not only grabbed a bag of type O+ blood, but an IV pole and an IV tube + needle. After setting up the blood and sodium trychtichloride, he took off Deko's wool coat and inspected the veins in her elbows. Determining that the left one would be better suited for the operation, he applied some rubbing alcohol to the area and gently stuck the IV needle in. This wasn't too difficult for him because he had some training in administering naloxone to overdose victims. After taping down the needle, he waited for the concoction to take effect, kneeling down before the couch and praying:
(God, if you can hear me, I realize I'm not the most devoutly religious person on this planet, but tonight, I ask you but one favor: let my precious Deko live! If this cure works, I swear in your good and holy name as well as that of your son Jesus Christ that I will treat her as I would want to be treated every second of every day!)
Todoroki continued to pray, doing his best to push the possibility of failure out of his mind. If Deko died, he had no idea what he was ever going to do with himself. This had to work.
"T-Todoroki…?"
Todoroki quickly lifted his head and gasped when he heard his name. Looking over at Deko, it was obvious…
"DEKO!"
Seeing that his dear Deko was still alive, Todoroki wrapped his arms around her as he cried. No words in any language could convey how elated he was to know that he saved her.
"Hey, it's OK!" Deko wrapped her arms around Todoroki. "Let it all out!"
And so, Todoroki continued to cry as Deko embraced him. After nearly losing her twice, it felt so liberating for him to just express such pure, unbridled joy like this. After this moment, he would never, ever let her go. Though still feeling a bit weak, and though overwhelmed by Todoroki pouring out his emotions onto her, Deko nevertheless held onto him with a smile on her face. Eventually, Todoroki stopped crying, but kept up the embrace for a little bit before backing off, still keeping his arms around her.
"Thanks!" said Todoroki. "You have no idea how beautiful life is right now!"
"You're welcome! Just one question…"
"Yes?"
"How did you manage to save me? I've tried several times to cure vampirism with no success!"
"I remembered an experiment from a high school science class involving sodium trychtichloride. I figured that if I mixed it in with human blood, then it would negate the iron-destroying effects of porphyric hemophilia."
Deko smiled. "Todoroki, you're brilliant!"
"You're quite the genius yourself, my dear Deko."
"Awww, you're so sweet!"
Deko handed Todoroki a tissue with which to blow his nose, and once he'd blown his nose and dried his eyes, she kissed him. Once again, the NYPD had owned the night.
Criticism is gold. Negativity and nitpicking are pyrite.
