Chapter 3
It took Blake a few moments to realize that the bed was empty, her hand slowly sliding along the empty space, and her rose was nowhere to be seen in the room. She waited for a few moments, her ears twitching with no sign of the redhead in the bathroom either.
It wasn't like Ruby to ever disappear from the room, at least from what she noticed. Ruby would either be laying in the bed staring off at nothing or sitting on the food against their bed reading a book. To which Blake would pull the woman back into bed wrapping her in tight cuddles asking her to read whatever she was reading out loud, her soothing voice always helped her sleep.
She knew Ruby still wasn't feeling well, but at that point she was becoming a little worried. It had been at least a week since she talked to the redhead in the bathroom… she felt like something was off. And she could feel it too.
Despite the connection the two had they managed to keep their feelings at bay to not overwhelm the other. But she couldn't help but not feel the overwhelming guilt and fear that made its way around the wall that Ruby had set up. She became worried as to why the redhead felt that way, she didn't want to push her into anything but she also wanted to at least be there for her.
There was one thought that immediately came to her head the day she came back from classes with Yang and Weiss. Humans normally didn't have the advanced hearing or smelling that faunus did, so when she walked into the room she was hit in the face with the smell of another person. Specifically another faunus. She never felt so much heat bubble in her stomach it made her angry, but she had to control herself.
She couldn't let whatever this was control her to lash out when it could be nothing. And so she kept it back, she helped Ruby whenever the redhead needed and she stayed by her side waiting. For that week after Ruby got better but she could still feel the guilt and sadness… and behind that smile and in her eyes was fear.
She waited and she waited. But Ruby said nothing, just smiling at the woman telling her that she was fine. She hated herself for thinking that Ruby would ever do such a thing. She knew that the woman loved her deep down, she could feel it. But she still feared that maybe when Ruby left that day early…it wasn't because she was sick.
It had gotten to her so much she caved and had finally called the one person she knew she could talk to. Someone who would hopefully understand as to what was going on… help her understand. She had one other idea, but she had to confirm before she started throwing things out.
Blake felt a sigh leave her lips as she scrolled through her contacts list stopping over one name, her finger an inch away from clicking the call button. She took a deep breath before clicking it, she brought the scroll up to her ear feeling her heart race as it rang a few times.
"Here goes nothing." She muttered hearing the phone click and her mother's voice ring out.
"Blake? I'm surprised to see you calling, is everything okay?"
"Yeah yeah no, everything is great mom. I just wanted to talk for a little bit."
"It doesn't sound like everything is fine dear. I can hear it in your voice, your father does the same thing." Blake gave a nervous chuckle as she ran a hand through her hair.
"That easy to tell huh?"
"Like father, like daughter, what's going on little one?" She felt a smile tug at her lips with the nickname.
"I'm sorry for calling out of the blue randomly like this, I just… you're the only person I can talk to about this."
"It's fine Blake, that's what I'm here for dear."
Blake nodded, taking a deep breath as she spun on her heel pacing. "Please don't tell father I asked you any of this either until I confirm everything. I don't need him freaking out about anything right now, especially since he's taken over the Whitefang again." She paused, taking another deep breath.
"I can't promise anything, you know one way or another that man will find out you called and will go on a rampage. But I will keep it from him for now."
"When you were pregnant with me… did dad ever become hostile around anyone? Human or faunus. Did he ever tell you that your scent was different?"
Kali paused for a few moments thinking as to what her daughter asked her before a chuckle was heard. "I did notice that when I found out I was pregnant he started to become a little more aggressive to people near me, he was addicted to being around me whenever he could. It was like he couldn't keep his hands off of me."
Blake felt a shiver go down her spine as she pinched the bridge of her nose.
"It's not something that is shared frequently between faunus but it is known that when the partner of a faunus be it human or faunus that whenever the other becomes pregnant their hormones change. Which also changes their scent to faunus, it's hard to tell at first if they are mated but it eventually comes to the point where other faunus have a bit of trouble being around that person."
It was slowly all starting to make sense to Blake now as she listened to her mother explain. She was pregnant.
It had been a few days since her conversation with her mother and she kept waiting, she saw things now she hadn't seen beforehand as she watched the rose. Small moments she would run to the bathroom or how much trouble she had sleeping or even getting up from the bed. As good as the redhead was at hiding from the faunus she wasn't that good. She could still feel those emotions that Ruby hid.
It pained her and she wanted nothing more than to confront the redhead, but she slowly understood why the woman hadn't told her. She didn't exactly have the greatest track record when it came to confrontation. Ruby was afraid to tell her, and she honestly hated herself that the woman was even afraid to come to her for something like this.
They were partners, they were mates… and hopefully soon married.
She quietly got up from the bed finding her slip on shoes making sure she didn't wake up the two sleeping on the other side of the room. Once she confirmed she grabbed her scroll and keys before making her way out of the dorm.
She didn't want Ruby to feel this way any longer, she waited for more than enough time. She had hurt her enough.
Now she just needed to find her, that was problem number one. Thankfully when they completed the mate marks that little bit of aura Ruby used to seal her mark on Blake was still with her. It was that little bit of red within her purple that warmed her heart whenever she felt it.
She took a deep breath, closing her eyes to concentrate on that warmth, that spark. A smile tugged at her lips when she saw the misty red outline travel down the hallway. Bingo.
She was nervous to find out if her suspicion was true, she was scared to find out that her other thought the one she buried away in the back of her mind was the truth. But she knew Ruby wouldn't do that to her. She took a deep breath as she let her feet carry her to wherever Ruby had decided to run off too.
In all her life Blake never thought about becoming a parent… being a mother. She didn't feel she deserved that after what she had done, they were young, they had time to discuss this and yet she could never tell the redhead about her true feelings when it came to kids. She always made the excuse they were too loud or she didn't like when they pulled on her ears but it was more than that.
She turned a corner before stopping in front of a door that led to the many balconies the school had, little areas the students could use to study or just relax outside. Her hand rested on the handle as she stopped feeling like her chest was going to explode from her heart. What was she going to say? She had to make sure that she was right or this conversation could turn out ten times worse than it needed to be.
She hadn't realized that she was at the top of the stairs until the cold Vale night air hit her face making her shiver.
"Is Ruby pregnant Blake?"
Blake paused, biting the tip of her thumb. "I think she is. I think she's scared to tell me. Gosh mom I've been a horrible girlfriend." She said resting her hand on her face.
"Blake no, I don't believe you have. I see the way she looks at you, I see the way you both do when neither of you notice. I can see the love you two share and I'm honestly proud you found that one person who looks at you that way. Little one if she is pregnant just support her, be that beacon of hope and just hold onto her. Whatever you two decide is up to you two and only you."
She stared at the woman feeling her heart skip a beat, she had her back turned to her looking up at the stars above them. Quietly she closed the distance between the two before her hands rested on the redheads hips, she left a light kiss on Ruby's shoulder right on her mark hearing her breath hitch slightly at the touch.
"Aren't you cold?" She whispered feeling Ruby lean back into her hold. "I'm going to be honest I didn't feel it until you said something."
Blake let out a little laugh as she wrapped her arms fully around Ruby's waist, a small purr rumbling in her chest. "Don't want you catching another cold now do we?" She said letting her nose run along the redheads neck forcing the swelling feeling in her stomach back.
"Probably not a good idea, I've already missed enough classes this week. Weiss is worried that I won't pass an exam with how much I've missed."
Blake shook her head resting her forehead on the crook of the woman's shoulder. "Don't listen to Weiss, you'll do just fine. I'll help you study since I have all the notes."
"You're my hero Blakey, always saving me from Weiss's torment." She felt the woman in her arms laugh making her smile. "I'll always be here to catch you Ruby." She whispered, lifting her head resting her chin now on her shoulder. "I mean it."
She felt Ruby shift in her arms as she took another deep breath feeling a shiver go down her spine, she bit her lip leaving another small kiss on her shoulder. "What's wrong Ruby?" She whispered feeling Ruby tense slightly in her hold only to relax a second later.
"What do you mean Blake? I'm fine, I just couldn't sleep and decided to go outside for some fresh air for a little."
Blake felt a small sigh leave her lips as she rested her hands again in her hips to have her slowly spin and face her. She pushed the woman back, resting her against the railing so she could now look in her eyes.
"I know something is wrong Ruby." She whispered tugging slightly at Ruby's aura, feeling her shiver. "I know it's not being sick from food poisoning or even a stomach bug or whatever it was. I know you're afraid and I can feel it, we might have our emotions under control but I can still feel what you're feeling. If you're afraid of how I will react to whatever is causing you guilt please know that I will not run away from this spot right here." She said, adjusting herself to plant her feet on the floor, giving Ruby a warming smile.
"I know I don't exactly have a great track record of things and I apologize for ever making you feel afraid to tell me anything-"
"You already know." She heard the woman whisper, she kept the smile on her face bringing her hand to Ruby's cheek, her thumb running along the skin. "I have a pretty good idea of what has been bothering you. But I want to hear you say it, if you want."
She watched as Ruby looked away trying multiple times her mouth opening and closing as she did. "How did you find out I was pregnant?" She whispered silver meeting amber again.
Blake gave the redhead a smile using her thumb to wipe away a tear she saw going down the woman's cheek. "At first I didn't know you were, I thought it was my heat. I questioned it but I never asked anyone. You started to feel better but that feeling when I was around you still stayed, it wasn't until I walked into our dorm the other day and I smelled another faunus had been in our room did I question further what exactly was going on." She paused, pushing a strand of Ruby's hair behind her ear. "I got angry, angrier than I've ever felt and I was going to ask you… but I needed to find out why. I'll be honest, I assumed at first… you cheated on me but I knew deep down you would never."
She felt Ruby's arms wrap around her shoulder as she moved more into Ruby. "It wasn't until I talked to my mom with my other suspicion did I realize exactly what you were going through. This only confirms fully now."
At this point she felt Ruby's body shaking as she sobbed quietly, she ran a hand through the woman's hair kissing her nose. "I'm not angry at all at you Ruby-"
"You should be!" Ruby said feeling the faunus's hands go to her cheeks making her look at the woman.
"No Ruby, I'm not angry at you. I'm angry at myself, I hate that I made you feel like you couldn't trust me enough to tell me you're pregnant with my baby. I hate myself because of that so much. I made you feel this way, you should honestly hate me."
"I don't hate you." Ruby whispered, resting her forehead against Blake's. "I could never hate you. I'm afraid, I never thought you would want kids…"
Blake smiled nodding. "I know from what I've said in the past and my actions haven't been in favor of kids. I have reasons… horrible reasons. I honestly was terrified when I came to the thought of you being pregnant, could I be a good mother for this child? Could I even be a good partner for you?" She paused, taking a deep breath. "I did horrible things while I was with the White Fang Ruby… things I wish I could take back." She leaned into Ruby's hand, closing her eyes at the feeling. "I've killed people… I went on a job before I decided to leave Adam, leave the White Fang. I saw the look on their faces and I…" She felt her words catch in her throat at the thought.
"They had kids, when I looked at their faces, I could see the hate, the pain, the sadness. After that I could never look at kids the same without seeing those faces." She felt Ruby run a hand through her hair scratching around her ear making her smile. "You've learned from the past, our kids won't look at you that way."
"What if they do?" She whispered, letting her forehead fall to the redhead's shoulder. "I don't know if I can handle that, seeing my children look at me like I'm a monster."
Ruby let out a sigh running her hand along Blake's back tangling her hand through her hair enjoying the soft purrs rumbling through her chest. "They won't look at you that way Blake because you're not a monster. They will love you, just as much as I love you."
Blake took a deep breath leaving a kiss on the redheads neck before standing back up silver meeting amber. "I'm nervous, but I'm not running. I'm scared but I have you. I promised myself when Beacon got attacked and I came back I would never leave again, even if hurt. Feeling your pain hurts me even more."
Ruby smiled resting her hands on Blake's face before leaning forward meeting her in the middle for a kiss. It was short and simple, but held a lot of their emotions.
"So is it too early to tell gender?" Blake asked, wrapping her arms around Ruby's waist, her hands resting on the railing behind her.
"A little early. From the timing I believe I'm about 3-4 weeks, I will be scheduling a doctor's appointment to confirm. Normally by 14 weeks you can tell a baby's gender."
"You seem to know a lot so far, have you done some reading on this?"
Ruby smiled, running her thumb along Blake's jaw. "Only a little. I wanted to make sure I knew everything beforehand."
"I guess I have to catch up a little." She gave Ruby a smile before adjusting her arms to pick up the girl in her arms earning a small fit of protest. "We have classes tomorrow, plus I'm getting cold. I want to have warm cuddles, I also want to talk about this more and go to appointments with you."
Ruby gave a huff crossing her arms over her chest, she didn't say much as she rested her head on Blake's shoulder. "You know Blakey, we love to do things backwards." She whispered, closing her eyes, listening to Blake's breathing.
"What do you mean by that?"
"Well we had sex and you marked me before we even starting dating, and I'm pregnant before we are married."
Blake felt a rush of heat spread over her face as she let out a light cough. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
Ruby gave a tired laugh as she felt the sleep start to take her. "It's okay Blakey, I'm only teasing you. Just paying back for all the times you have." She whispered resting her hand on Blake's chest.
The woman was about to retort but she just smiled, noticing the woman in her arms had fallen asleep. "Thank you Ruby." She whispered, leaving a light kiss on her forehead. She pushed her aura out as she walked nudging the redhead slightly to feel her emotions.
Happy
