Chapter 24
Kara heard her phone go off and she looked at it. Meet me outside down by the bench in five minutes. It was from Kate and immediately the blonde was concerned. Obviously the Gothamite couldn't come inside CatCo. That would be all sorts of silly, especially since Cat Grant was sitting not all that far away.
She looked over to Nia's desk and the human-Naltorian hybrid was tapping away at her keyboard. Getting up, Kara walked over to her friend's desk and smiled at her. Nia wondered what was up and stopped typing.
"Kate texted me. She wants me outside in five minutes. Can you cover for me?" Kara kept her tone low.
"She's taking a risk, isn't she?" Nia raised an eyebrow, keeping her tone low as well.
"Something tells me that she wouldn't be doing this unless something went sideways. Something she didn't want to talk about on the phone," her friend said.
"All right. Find out what's up. If anyone asks, you had one of your sources call you," Nia smiled.
"Thanks. Let you know what's up as soon as I can," Kara smiled back and then quickly moved to the elevator. She was glad the lift was empty and that no one had hopped on. The nerves were coming back but she chalked it up to the fact that she was worried about Kate.
Exiting the building, she found the brunette sitting on one of the benches near the bus stop. Running over to her friend, she quickly sat down. She didn't get to open her mouth though as Kate started with,
"We've got a problem."
"More than what we had already?" Kara wondered.
"Oh… your sister and I think that somehow our mischievous Imp is using her powers despite the stasis chamber. She said that you've been lacking confidence lately and then Brainy said that Imps weren't easily calculated. The man only knows math and how to defend the innocent. Does that sound like him?" Kate asked. The Kryptonian frowned. She looked back on her own thoughts and realized that her friend was making sense.
"Then there was the whole thing with me and Alex…" that got Kara's attention.
"Um… what now?" The blonde gave her a look.
"Let's just say the two of us started thinking things we shouldn't have been thinking about each other. We both know that I would never make a move on your sister and that Alex would never cheat on Kelly, so…" Kate reassured her.
"You're right. Something is up. For the record, if Alex was available, I wouldn't tell you 'no'," Kara said.
"It wouldn't be weird? I mean at the end of the day, we work together," the brunette pointed out.
"Yeah, so? Kelly knows my secret and helps out. Now, if you broke her heart, well, I think I'll let you imagine what would happen," that was the old Kara. She was teasing her and seemed like her usual self.
"Yeah, that would be the tricky part. Our thing was, we don't know how to confirm our suspicions without fully removing her from stasis. Basically, we thought that she'd still be a little slow on the uptake and we could blast her back to the Phantom Zone but if she's not really out of it, and we remove the one thing that is holding her now, well I think we both know disaster would follow," the brunette was not liking their options.
"I'll need to talk to my mother. I have an idea but I'm not sure how we'd pull it off," Kara said.
"Think Nia can cover for you for a little while longer?" Kate asked.
"No. Miss Grant has been really on our cases today, but I don't want to wait until I get off shift to talk to her," the blonde said.
"Then I had better step up and take one for the team," the brunette offered.
"You can't be serious," Kara wasn't sure she liked that idea.
"Take me to see Miss Grant," Kate told her.
