Let's Begin

The sun was now going down, the night was peaking out over the sky above me. I watched the moon slowly come into the sky, the street lights have now come on. I listen to people tell their loved ones they were on their way home, children asking for just 5 more min to play outside. I enjoyed this time of day, this moment, the world was slowing down around me.

"Jane, he has arrived." I looked over giving him a nod, getting up from the bench outside.

"You good?" He asked me as we stepped into the elevator. I nodded yes, even know I wasn't sure how I was.

I needed to take a bit of time to think about everything Maura said. I thought about what she said about my life as a detective, and what it meant for my family. She was right when she said I chose for them. The more I thought of giving this life to my family, the more I felt sick. I kept thinking about all the monsters that have come after me, knowing my family was also a target in those moments.

"Jane. Jane!" Nina was waving her hand in front of my face.

"Sorry, what do you have?"

"This is the file on Darren, I did find out some more stuff on him. I confirmed that he is a volunteer firefighter. Also, his mother works for a company that sells, buys, and auctions properties around Boston. I looked into the properties, 3 of the victims from last year were found on them. She was also the person who was in charge of said buildings and farm. Also, Jenna was found just 20mins from one of her abandoned farms that her company is trying to sell."

"Okay, so we have two connections. First, he dated Jenna's sister, and maybe Jenna as well. Also, his mother is in charge of selling the properties that our victims were found on. These are way too close to not dig into. We will go question him, can you do some digging around on his parents? If this is are killer, then there has to be a reason why he has it out for burning victims, and why he kept Jenna alive for so long." Nina nodded, walking back to her desk.

"Ready?" I asked Frost.

"Let's go."

His eyes went straight towards mine as we stepped into the room. Arms were crossed at his chest, the water was untouched and moved to the side of the table. Eye contact was made as we continued to sit down opposite him.

"Darren thank you for coming in to help us, this won't take too long," Frost asked, leading the conversation.

"Detective said you have questions about Jenna?"

"Yes, that is correct. Can you explain how you knew Jenna?" I asked, laying my arms on my legs as I crossed them.

"I went to school with her, dated her sister." shrugging at the answer.

"We were told that you got close to Jenna, did you two ever date?"

"No. I admit we liked each other, and we were both interested in a relationship. Then her sister got sick, she passed, and College started. Soon as we even started, it was over. Jenna started school, and I never heard from her."

"You did tho when you started to date Sarah. Does she know your past with Jenna?"

"No, she doesn't. Jenna acted like she never met me, and I continued with the act. I don't know why she did, but I figured it was because she didn't want it to be awkward."

"When was the last time you spoke with Jenna?"

"High school detective, like I said we stopped talking."

"Not even when you were in their dorm?" He shrugged.

"I was there for Sara, not Jenna."

"Did it upset you that she refused to acknowledge your friendship?"

"Nope, didn't give a shit."

"You didn't talk to her, but when was the last time you saw her?"

"I guess a couple of days before she went missing, I usually come to pick Sarah up on Friday to spend the weekend at my place. Jenna was probably there, but I wouldn't notice." I watched Frost write down something.

"Do you have any ideas on who would harm Jenna, maybe someone from her past?"

"No. I might not be on good terms with her now, but she was the kindest person I knew. She did live a wild life while in high school, but she was a good person detective. I feel bad for her parents, they lost two children."

"Thank you for coming down, one more thing. Would you consent to give us a sample of your DNA?"

"Why?"

"Jenna was pregnant when she died. She would have become pregnant after she was gone missing."

"That's horrible to hear, but yeah you can swab me. As I said, I had never spoken to her since High school. Now I kinda wish I did."

We asked Susie to come to collect a sample of his, and walked him out of the room. I wasn't happy with the way this investigation was going. We keep getting leads, and for those leads to lead us to a dead end. I took a seat at my desk, rubbing my hands together.

"Well, we can take him off the list, who would agree to a DNA sample if you are the killer," Frost said, walking towards the board.

"Not so fast Frost, let's wait for the results."

"Korsak is right Frost. Let's see what the results are, and go from there."

After taking Jo Friday for a walk, I grabbed a beer sitting down on my couch. Turning on a pre-recorded game. I noticed I had a missed call from Maura earlier, I apologized for not being able to answer but thanked her for calling me. She also sent me a text letting me know her parents said hello. I smiled at the picture she sent me of them together.

Enjoy your time with your parents, tell them I said hello. Hope you enjoy your time away.

Thank you Jane – I miss you.

I miss you too.

Can I call you?

You never have to ask

It didn't take long for my phone to start ringing, and Maura's picture was lighting up my screen. Brings a smile to my face.

"Hey Maura"

"Hello Jane, How is everything?"

"Good I guess. We interviewed the boyfriend, he gave us his DNA. Frost doesn't think he is the killer, Korsak wants to see what the DNA says. I think He is guilty of something, this just may not be it." The silence was found after that, breathing only to be heard.

"Maura?"

"I rather not discuss work, to be honest. I will help you with the questions due to my lab, but can we maybe just talk about anything besides work when we are on the phone?"

"Of course, How is your getaway going?"

"It's good so far, my parents cancelled all their obligations. They want to use this time to spend with me since I am here."

"That's awesome Maura, I know that meant a lot to you."

"It does." I smiled knowing she was smiling at the thought of her parents cancelling plans to spend time with her.

"Maura, I just want you to know that I heard you before you left."

"I hope so Jane, we were in the same car together." She said giggling.

"I meant that I heard what you were saying, every word. You are right. I forced this life onto my family, and I don't know how I feel about that. I do know that I am thankful they stayed with me through everything so far and that you also chose to be part of my life."

"They love you, Jane, I love you."

"I love you too Maura."
