Chapter 6 - The Greatest Change

Katara, Zuko and Aang regrouped by the boardwalk. Zuko had told Aang what happened.

"I'm really sorry about what happened," Aang apologized to Katara and Zuko. "Your bloodbending, Katara, had led you down a somewhat dark path and had cost you dearly."

Katara hung her head sadly. A tear fell from her eye.

"Wait," Zuko suddenly said, realizing something. "You defeated my father when you took his bending away using energybending, right?"

"Yeah," Aang answered. "What's that got to do with anything?"

"Maybe you can use energybending to restore Katara's waterbending, can't you?"

Katara shot her head up, gasping.

"Can he really do that?" she asked.

Aang froze for a second.

"I don't know," Aang replied, unsure. "I haven't tried it on a non-bender to give, let alone restore, their bending." Pause. "But I'll try."

Aang went over to Katara, breathed in, and placed his hands on her collarbone and forehead. He went into the Avatar State, his eyes glowing. The tattoos on his head and hands also glowed. After about ten seconds, the glowing stopped. Aang let go.

Katara backed up. She had sensed she was about to lose her footing at the boardwalk, and stopped short before she could. She quickly opened her eyes, and raised her hands up. The waters in the river rose. She gasped in surprise. Her waterbending had been restored.

"It worked," she said, smiling. "You did it, Aang. I can waterbend again."

"It seems," Aang added, "that when an Avatar hits their lowest point, they are open to the greatest change."

Katara quickly ran to Zuko and hugged him.

"Oh, Zuko," she wept happily. "I'm sorry, and thank you."

"So, does this mean you forgive me?" Zuko asked.

Katara answered with a nod.

"Then I forgive you, as well," he understood.

And with that, he hugged her back. Aang was happy that the relationship had finally mended.

"My Lord!"

The shout of a Fire Nation citizen got the attention of Zuko. The citizen ran to him, catching his breath.

"What's wrong?" Zuko asked.

"It's your sister, Azula," the citizen replied, gasping. "Her firebending has been disabled."

Aang and Katara gasped. Zuko's face hardened.

Aang steered Appa back toward the direction of the Fire Nation Palace, now with Katara riding alongside Zuko.

In an instant, when Zuko forgave Katara for not telling him about her bloodbending, he also learned about the terrible fate that his sister had suffered. And now with Katara rejoining Team Avatar, the three headed off to what would later be known as Republic City to come to her aid, even if she wasan enemy. Little did they know that they were being led to a trap, and a new dark era would begin there…

Outside the Fire Nation palace, the hooded masked figure stood at the gate.

"Soon, Fire Lord Zuko," the figure said, clenching their fist, "you will feel the same fate as your beloved sister." Hardening their fist, the figure continued, "And Katara, you will pay dearly for what you did." Lowering their head, the figure continued still, "The era of bending will soon be over."

The End…?
