Chapter Two: Breathless
The morning's dawn shone over Yue Bay as the airship arrived at the dock of Republic City. The bison arrived later, gently floating down to the ground.
Korra grinned, happy to be home.
"Ok, we're here." She held out her arms, basking in the warmth the city offered. "Welcome to Republic City!"
A snore interrupted her dramatic welcoming. With a face, she looked down. Kori was fast asleep on her lap, snoring like a gorilla-goat.
"Kori?"
She gently nudged him. He didn't rouse from his sleep.
"Kori, wake up."
She nudged him harder. No change, he kept on sleeping.
She hauled him up by grasping his arms, shaking him, her patience quickly running thin.
"Wake up, kid!"
The shaking didn't work. Kori resumed his snoring, slumping peacefully. His head was hanging back, his face in bliss.
"Daddy, stop it…It's too early..." The boy mumbled.
"I'm regretting telling you to sleep your headache off." Korra remarked dryly.
The rumbles running under her legs was the only warning she got before Sora stood up on her back legs, tossing the two people off her back off in the process.
"Sora!" Kori cried, finally wide awake. He rested a hand on his head, getting another headache.
"Oh good, you're awake." Korra said with the same dry tone.
Out of nowhere, Pabu jumped on Kori and out popped Meeka, promoting another crazy chase around the harbour.
"I don't know if your Snow Mink is playing hard to get or is scared of Pabu." Korra mentioned, standing onto her feet and heaved Kori up by the arm.
Kori stared up at her with wide eyes, some reminiscent of a blush crossing his scarred face. Then he shook his head rapidly, snapping a glare at the ferret behind Korra.
"She'll like him better if he stops chasing after her! She hates that! She was chased by poachers most of her life!"
"Hey, Pabu, leave her alone!" Bolin cried. "That's not how you get a girl!"
Meek and Ferret leapt towards Kori. Just as Meeka hid in Kori's shirt for safety, Bolin swept in and grabbed hold of Pabu, the ferret wiggling in his hand.
"Sorry." Bolin apologised sheepishly.
Kori stroked Meeka comfortingly, frowning at Bolin and Pabu.
"Where's Asami?" Korra asked.
"She had to go to her factory, meeting some client." Mako answered as he approached the others.
"Is it the same guy she meets practically every month, whats-his-name?"
"I guess so. She left in a rush."
Suddenly Kori gasped and bent down, planting his hand flat on the ground.
"Kori?" Korra asked.
Kori said nothing, eyes fixed on the ground.
Then Bolin shifted his foot. "Did you feel that?"
Korra sensed a rumble under their feet. She looked ahead, seeing a cloud of dust heading right towards them. She could also hear joyous laughter.
"INCOMING!"
At the same time, Bolin and Korra stomped the ground, bending a wall of Earth that sent two air scooters and a boy flying over them.
"Whoa!"
The boy did his own Eathbending, raising mould to land on his feet on and set him down on the ground. Then one of the kids riding the air scooter landed right next to him.
"I win!"
"No way, cuz! I got here first!"
"I did, cuz!"
"No, me!"
"Me!"
"Skoochy! Meelo!"
The boys turned to the left, seeing an angry Mako.
"Oh, hey officer." Skoochy coolly greeted.
"WAH!"
The second airbender flew higher than the boys and thus, landed harder ahead of the boys.
"Ikki lost!" Meelo cheered.
"Meelo!" Korra scolded in a yell.
Kori gasped and immediately ran to Ikki's side, getting there first before the others. He carefully hooked his thin arms under the unconscious girl's lithe form and raised her up. Ikki's face scrunched. Slowly, her grey eyes fluttered open, and she released a soft gasp as she peered into Kori's icy gaze, framed by long eyelashes, wisps of black hair flew across his porcelain face by a gentle breeze she didn't make. It was like he took her breath away.
"I need to ask you something." Ikki whispered hoarsely.
"What?" Kori asked.
"Come closer."
Kori leaned in by a few inches. "What is it?"
Ikki stared blankly before breaking into a wide-eyed grin.
"You have very pretty eyes!" She blurted out happily.
Kori blinked his very pretty eyes. "Thanks...I guess."
Kori pulled her up, even though Ikki airbended herself up to her two feet. But she kept her gaze on him and her hands locked around his hands.
"Are you hurt anywhere?" He asked her.
"When I fell from heaven?" She retorted in a dreamy tone.
He raised a brow over one of his big blue eyes. "Uh, kinda?"
"HEY!"
Meelo popped up out of the blue, startling Kori.
"Hands off my sister!"
Kori tugged but Ikki won't release her side of the gesture.
"I would if she would let go."
Ikki only widened her grin, getting excited by his very presence.
"Korra!"
In a white blur, Naga came borrowing over to Korra, happily nuzzling her owner. Jinora jumped off the Polarbear-dog's back to hug Korra, followed by her boyfriend Kai. Then the female airbender noticed Sora.
"You found another flying bison!" Jinora said in delight, taking a step forward.
Unfortunately for her, Sora growled at Jinora, making her stumble back in fear. Naga advanced on the sky bison, growling back, two ferocious beasts engaged in a battle of intimidation.
Kori ran from Ikki, slipping his hands out of her hold, and stroked Sora's fuzzy head, calming the beast down.
"Easy, girl." he whispered.
"Hands off my other sister!" Meelo shouted.
"That is not me, Meelo." Jinora said, insulted and annoyed by her brother.
Naga stared at Kori, studying him. Then she trotted over and licked Kori's face, cleaning the grime off his pale skin. Kori froze with the slobber slowly dripping down. Then Naga nuzzled him, making him chuckle.
"Are you an Airbender?" Jinora asked Kori, keeping her distance from the aggressive bison.
Kori looked at Jinora, intimidating her with his striking icy eyes.
"Not born one." He simply answered.
"So, no?"
He didn't answer. He just stared at her, frowning. Jinora cringed but Ikki sighed dreamily.
Kai frowned, not liking how the new guy was making his girlfriend uncomfortable.
"We have to take her to Airbender Island." Kai reached out to Sora. But the pregnant bison once again growled threateningly, making the boy staggering back. "Geez!"
Kori stroked Sora's head, calming her down. "Uh, she won't. She goes where I go."
"You must have a really deep bond with her." Jinora noted.
"Not really. I saved her from poachers back in the Fire Nation." Kori looked down, guilt striking across his face. "Didn't save her mate though."
Sora rubbed her huge head against him, her growls lowering to a soft tone.
"She doesn't blame you." Korra said.
Kori smiled, his face and eyes brightening up. But then his smile dropped, and he glanced to his left. Ikki was smiling wide at him, her big grey eyes set on him and only him.
"Why are you smiling at me like that?" He asked her warily.
Ikki dropped her smile and blushed. "Oh, I was smiling?"
Jinora, Kai, and Meelo groaned all together.
"You could've gotten us killed!"
Skoochy smirked up at Mako, not intimidated at the very least. "Preach to the chief! There's nothing you could do to me anyway."
"Skoochy, just because your adoptive father is somewhat romantically involved with the chief of police does not mean you can violate the rules whenever you want!"
"Dad begged to differ."
"And having Avatar Aang's eldest son as your adoptive father is not a free pass either."
"I repeat, Dad begged to differ."
Shortly after the defeat of Kuvira, Skoochy made the faithful mistake of stealing Bumi's wallet which contained the last photo of Aang just before he died, promoting the crazy airbending man to chase him all over the city. Eventually, Bumi decided to adopt Skoochy after seeing the horrible conditions the boy was living in and crack a plan with Mako and Bolin to open good orphanages across the nations.
"Where did you even get that thing?"
Skoochy grinned, gripping the long white bone of his new staff, a sharp tooth tip shining in the light.
"Dad gave it to me. Before he became a Airbender, great-uncle Sokka trained him in the ways of the Nonbender warrior. It's a family tradition, uncle to nephew to son!"
"You're a Earthbender, not a Nonbender."
"In the Water Tribe, I'm practically one."
"You're not even his son."
"Officially, I am!"
Mako sighed in defeat. "Just don't poke anyone's eyes out with that thing."
Skoochy smirked. Then he walked over to Kori, grinning smugly at the new boy with the bison.
"So, what's your name, buddy?" He asked.
"Uh…. I'm called Kori?" Kori answered in a nervous question.
"Welcome to the gang!"
Skoochy slapped a hand on Kori's shoulder, accidentally frightening the snow mink wrapped around his neck and causing the creature to bite on his hand.
"HEE-OUCH!"
Skoochy yanked his hand away, his screaming alerted another creature with big ears to pop up from inside Kori's shirt.
"Whoa!" Bolin yelped.
"GET THIS THING OFF ME!"
Skoochy grabbed Meeka with his other hand and pulled hard, but the mink's jaws latched onto his hand, refusing to bulge. Mako smirked at the boy's oblivious blight. Eventually, Skoochy yanked Meeka off. The Snow Mink wiggled out of his hold and landed perfectly on her paws on the grimy ground. She hissed at the boy.
"Scheez!" Skoochy whined, rubbing his injured hand.
Once again, Pabu darted for Meeka. The fire ferret and snow mink ran in a circle, spinning faster and faster until Meeka ran back to Kori, leaving Pabu in a dizzy state.
"What else are you hiding on you?" Korra asked teasingly.
Kori gasped. "Moony!"
"You have a lemur!" Ikki said in awe.
Jinora got excited as she closely inspected the lemur. "That's not just any lemur, that's the original breed of winged lemur! Same as Momo!"
"He's mine!" Meelo yelled.
"You already have a lemur!" Jinora told him.
"If anyone is getting the original lemur Aang had, it's gonna be me, eldest son of his eldest son!"
"You're adopted!"
"Still part of the family!"
Skoochy quickly discarded his pain and went for the rare lemur, same as Meelo.
The rare lemur dubbed Moony squawked in fear, ears sticking up before literally flying out of Kori's arms. The latter narrowly moved aside to avoid the two boys lunging. The adoptive cousins skidded on their feet and flew in a dash for Moony all over the harbour, using their bending to catch up to the nimble creature.
"Stop chasing him! He hates that! He spent most of his life fleeing!" Kori cried.
The boys ignored him. Then Skoochy grabbed the lemur and yanked hard, pulling the shrieking lemur into his hands.
"Aha!" Skocchy grinned with smug triumph.
Until his 'prize' clawed at his face.
"OW!" Skoochy screamed, letting go of Moony to hold his scratched face. "What is with animals attacking me today?"
"Yes. There must be a reason." Mako said sarcastically.
Moony jumped right back into Kori's arms, furry arms around Kori's neck, clinging to him like a frightened child.
"Easy, Moony. I'd got you." Kori said in a gentle tone, tenderly rubbing the lemur's pat. The scene was rather sweet.
"He's mine!" Meelo shouted, advancing on Kori. Moony snarled which scattered Aang's granddaughters' original impression of Momo's breed. This lemur wasn't at all like how Gran-Gran described Momo.
"Uh, Meelo, maybe you should leave the poor thing alone..." Jinora advised.
Again, Meelo ignored his older sister and snatched Moony away from Kori's arms. Only for the lemur to attack his face like he did with Skoochy.
"OW, OW, OW!"
Kori swiftly took Moony back, the latter instantly resuming his hugging on Kori, whimpering. Ikki sighed dreamily.
"That thing is evil!" Meelo cried, his face baring red clawmarks.
"You're evil." Kori deadpanned, staring at Meelo with a raised brow, making the Airbender boy fume.
Ikki giggled. "He's so funny…"
Jinora glanced to her sister.
Korra laid a hand on Kori's shoulder, snapping Kori's piercing gaze up to her.
"Obviously, you and your little furry friends went through a heck of a lot." She gently pushed him towards Bolin. "I have to go, but I'll be back. Bolin will take you to the orphanage. I'll see you there afterwards, ok?"
With a smile, Korra turned and walked away, Mako right at her side.
Bolin grinned. "Come on. You'll have a great time there. We just installed a game room…"
Kori stared in the direction Korra went, blocking Bolin out. As soon as the Avatar disappeared out of his sight, the boy immediately darted after her. The rest of the group blinked before Bolin freaked out.
"No, Kori!"
Just then, Sora growled as she turned and hovered after Kori, with Skoochy on her head.
"Whoa, nelly!"
Then Ikki zoomed after the wayward boy.
"Ikki!"
And then Pabu jumped off in pursuit of Meeka no less.
"Pabu!"
In no time, everyone else was all running after Kori, after Korra.
"Heel, girl, heel! Yip, yip!"
"That's the call for making the bisons go, you idiot!"
"Yap, yap!"
"Don't you yap yap me!"
"I was trying to stop the bison!"
"SORA! Her name is Sora!"
"Come back here!"
"Are you talking about Kori, Ikki or Sora?
"I'm not entirely sure anymore?"
At the police station, Mako talked to his coworkers, checked the board and his desks for the latest update on Korra's mystery girl. Unfortunately, there were no developments since they left two weeks ago. No reported sightings, no missing persons reports, not even death notices fitting the description of the mysterious little girl.
"You really don't have to do this, Mako." Korra said when Mako groaned in his hands out of frustration. "Like you said, finding this girl is next to impossible."
Mako lifted his head up and turned to her, his gaze harder with determination. "I've seen you do the impossible. And I don't mind. Really. This is important to you." But then he winced, golden eyes widening and even a faint blush blooming on his pale face, once he realised what he said. "I mean you're the Avatar! Weird dreams don't happen without a reason, right?"
Korra stared at him and then looked at the picture she drew of the girl. She was sure to draw the eyes as sharp as ice even on paper with simple black ink.
"Smooth, kid."
Mako looked over his shoulder. Chief Lin BeiFong was uncharacteristically smiling at him, her metal-studded feet positioned in a crossed-legged teasing posture. Her weird impish expression reminded Mako of Ikki.
"You're doing a lot of work for an ex who once destroyed your office." Lin said, her voice higher and more gentle than usual.
"I'm just doing a favour for a friend, chief." Mako answered carefully.
"Yeah, a friend." She teased, which made the young detective stare at his boss. Then Lin resumed her usual frown and straightened her posture. "Anyway...Mako, I need you to man the fort. I have a doctor's appointment to get to."
"Doctor?"
About time, something was definitely wrong with her. For the past few weeks, the chief had been having bizarre mood swings, stomach cramps and throwing up every ten minutes.
"Just do it. I need to go before I burst into tears, throw up over anyone or get happy over a damn paper slip."
Lin stormed off, eager to leave before one of her mood swings took hold of her and embarrass her in public again. She was so focused, she passed a young boy in Fire Nation rags at the bottom of the steps without giving a single glance.
Kori.
The young boy stared up at the impressive building that was the police station. But when he took a step, he froze. Through scared eyes, the building shrunk, the walls closing in on him.
He took a step back.
"GOTCHA!"
Kori yelped at the sudden yell behind him, about to slip back and fall backwards on the steps if Ikki hadn't helped him. Ikki grinned up at him.
"Uh...hi again." Kori said uncertainly.
"So, what you want to do at the Police station? Wanna report a crime? Wanna see Korra again?"
Kori blinked at her. "…Are you following me?"
Now Ikki was the one nervous. she jerked back, blushing.
"I wasn't following you, well I was, but only because you ran off when we were taking you to the orphanage, it's not a bad place, with Bolin in charge it's a great place!"
She grinned again, this time her cheeks flushing bright red. Kori blinked, his eyes glinting with confusion.
"Heel! Heel!"
"Sora?" Kori gasped, he and Ikki looking up.
The pregnant air bison swooped in, settling down at the steps, much to the shock of bystanders.
"Sora, what are you doing here?"
"Following you!"
Kori and Ikki looked up. Skoochy was perched on top of Sora's head, frowning down at them.
"Hey, what's the big deal?" Skoochy questioned before Sora shook him off of her. "Ow! What do animals hate me?"
"Sorry, girl." Kori stroked in between her eyes. "I just gotta take this chance. I can do this."
"Hey!"
Just then, the rest of the gang showed up.
Bolin came up to Kori, frowning at the young boy sternly, hands placed on his hips. "Young man, don't run away like that again! You want to get arrested or something?"
Kori stared back at him, eyes widened as if he saw a ghost in Bolin.
Bolin eased up on his frowning for concern. "Kori?"
"I think you broke him, Bolin." Kai remarked.
"What's going on here?"
Kori jolted at the voice. He slowly turned around. Korra was walking down the steps, with Mako, approaching their friends.
"Guys?" She asked again.
Kori's bright eyes widened, and he made a fearful squeak. "I can't do this."
However, when he made two steps back, Sora nudged her big nose against his back, pushing him 10 steps forward, bumping right into Korra.
Korra grabbed hold of Kori's arm to steady him. She smiled at him, flashing her perfect pearly whites.
"Hey, Kori."
Kori froze, eyes bulging at her.
"Kori?"
Kori stayed frozen whilst staring at her.
Ikki's eyes darted to Kori and then to Korra and back again to Kori and then back to Korra. Her blush disappeared and her grin dropped.
"Now Korra broke Kori." Kai commented.
His girlfriend, on the other hand, had wide eyes like Kori when she glanced to her sister, Korra and Kori. "Uh oh."
"What is it?"
"I think Ikki has a crush on Kori. And I think Kori has a crush on Korra."
"Is that bad? I mean, Kori is kinda difficult to talk to, but it's just a harmless crush."
"It's worse than that. My sister is in a love pentagon! She likes Kori who likes Korra whose just friends with her ex who is obviously still in love with her, but she doesn't notice, and I don't know whenever or not she's in a relationship with Asami."
Kai slapped his forehead, getting what she meant. "Not again!"
"We just got through the first one!"
"Dad said Mako is still held up over Korra." Skoochy said, catching the conversation.
"And Korra still has that stuffed toy from the festival four years ago Mako won for her in her room." Jinora giggled.
Overhearing the three young teenagers, Mako scowled. He deepened his scowl at how Kori was practically hugging Korra.
He faced his brother, still scowling. "Bolin, you're supposed to take Kori to the orphanage and get him listed up. Without documents, he could be deported back to the Fire Nation on the next boat."
"Sorry, bro, he got away from me." Bolin apologised sheepishly. He glanced to where Mako was looking and smiled. "I think he has a crush on Korra. It's kinda cute."
Mako scoffed. "He won't stand a chance with her. He's younger than her. There must like a five-year age difference between them."
"Katara was older than Avatar Aang and they were in love and so is Tenzin and Pema."
Mako shot Bolin a glare. Rather than cower, Bolin countered with a smirk.
"You just don't like anyone getting close to Korra, that's why you don't like Kori. Possessive, much? You're jealous. You're jealous of the little guy because you're still in-"
Mako quickly covered Bolin's big mouth with his hand. "Bo, don't you dare say that out loud!" He could see his brother's infectiously goofy smile under his hand. "I regret ever telling you."
Bolin shook off Mako's hand, still grinning. "We're brothers, we're supposed to know each other's secrets. Just get off your high ostrich-horse and tell her how you feel!"
"No. I told you, we're just friends." Mako directed his glare from his annoying brother to the annoying admirer of the woman he admired. "I really don't trust that kid."
"Really? He reminds me of you…If he was moodier and has a red scarf instead of a Snow Mink that sends Pabu into a love frenzy."
Speaking of which, Pabu was once again chasing Meeka. Moony grabbed Pabu and held him back from chasing Meeka, but the ferret was surprisingly strong and dragged the lemur across the ground while chasing Meeka.
"Gotcha this time!" Skoochy said as he dove in to snatch Moony.
However, the lemur released the ferret, allowing the latter to attack his face.
"Dah! What is with animals attacking me?"
Mako didn't pay any attention to Skoochy. He only gazed at Korra, his heart twisting with longing to be near her.
But he had to go back and watch the station.
"Just get him enlisted by the end of the day."
With that, Mako turned on his heels and stomped back to his workplace.
Bolin sighed and moved to get Kori.
"Come one, little guy. I gotta document you at the orphanage."
However, Kori won't move an inch.
"Uh, Korra? Can you snap him out of it?"
So, Korra snapped her fingers in Kori's face. He reacted by blinking, the free tails of his bandana flying up and then descending on his shoulders.
She giggled at his reaction. "Looks like I got a shadow."
Kori's pale face faded to a much brighter white.
"You're weird." Meelo stated.
Kori narrowed his eyes at Meelo. "So are yo-"
But then Kori stopped talking and started gasping, grabbing at his neck.
"Kori?"
Kori moved around frantically, unable to talk or even breathe. Korra immediately pulled the boy into her arms, holding him as he fought in her grasp. She opened his mouth and moved her hand in a diving-claw motion, bending a small blob of water out of his mouth. Kori gasped loudly and heavily, never too grateful to be breathing air again.
"Take it easy." Korra told him gently, patting his shoulder. "You're ok now."
Kori gazed up at her. Korra gave him a comforting smile and then turned her attention on the ball of water hovering above her palm.
"Water…"
"Kori was choking on water?" Jinora added in confusion. "On dry land?"
"That's odd- whoa!"
Just then, Korra and Kori were yanked apart by a sudden rise if water between them, quickly turning into ice. As Kori fell backwards, the ice behind him formed into sharp spikes.
"Ah!"
But, with a yelp, Bolin made a single stomp that Earthbended the ground beneath the icy spikes, sweeping it away. Also in the process, a gush of air breezed under Kori, catching his fall. He was gently lifted onto his feet and Ikki zoomed at his side, panicking.
"Kori, are you ok? Of course, you're not ok, after you were almost died of drowning and falling into spikes, what was I thinking? I was just asking if you're ok mentally, like are you scared but ok or surprised, but ok? Do you need to see a doctor or a healer? Yes, definitely a healer, maybe Korra, no, not Korra! But you might need immediate attention so I have to suck it up and let Korra heal you-"
"I'm fine." Kori interrupted her, smiling. "Thanks, Ikki."
Ikki stopped rush-talking and blushed.
"What the heck is going on?" Kai demanded.
Everyone looked down the ground. The ice had reduced to a puddle of water.
Ikki tightened her grip on Kori's arm.
Then Sora growled and moved into a protective stance in front of where Kori was.
"Sora? What's wrong, girl?" Kori asked, stroking Sora's leg.
Korra looked to where the sky bison was directing her growl toward. The Avatar saw a couple from a few feet away. That couple stood out from the other wanderers on the street. They weren't dressed to stand out, wearing dark coats. Both had dark-brown hair and mocha skin associated with the Water Tribes.
What really stood them out was their postures. They looked like they were going to strike.
A predator hunting its prey.
Korra glanced to Sora, the massive creature still growling softly, and to Kori, Sora's handler.
"Guys…I think we're being watched."
Her friends stiffened at her words.
Korra didn't take her eyes off the couple. She stared them off, daring them to make the first move. Any move so she can react and punch them out of Republic City.
"Go to the island. I'll handle them."
"Them?"
Kori froze when he saw them.
"They found me." He whispered in horror.
Ikki moved her hands, so both of her arms wrapped around his arm.
"Let's go. We'll take to my home. You'll be safe there." She said softly.
She tugged on his arm gently, leading him away. The two tried to leave with her family while Korra and Bolin stay put. But the girl of the couple moved her hand. Water quickly turned to ice, running up the entire distance between them to stop the runaway kids with a wall of ice.
In response, Bolin earthbend the ground, scattering the ice and Korra bended said ice to the couple, trapping them.
The guy of the couple gulped. "Oh Yue, we've been seen."
"Just improvise." His female companion snarled. "Kill them all."
At once, the couple practically sprang into action. Sora roared, standing in front of Kori. The man of the couple threw water, freezing Sora's legs.
"Sora!" Kori cried.
"We gotta go now!" Kai exclaimed, pulling Jinora and Skoochy away. Skoochy grabbed Meelo by the scruff go his suit.
"Come on, Kori!" Ikki pulled on Kori's arm, leading him away.
The man of the attacking couple ran after the kids, throwing water to the ground and freeze into ice. Bolin Earthbend the ground underneath the ice, shattering it before it reached the kids, allowing them to disappear into the city. In retaliation, the man bended the ice shards towards Bolin. With a yelp, the Earthbender moulded himself a wall, only to be in case in ice. To help her friend, Korra bended fire to the ice cage, melting it. Bolin shivered from the cold, shivering like crazy, hugging himself and tapping his teeth.
"T-T-Thanks, K-K-Kor-r-ra." He stuttered.
"Wait, Avatar Korra?" Bolin's opponent cried worriedly. "Akkoro, hold on! That's the Avatar!"
The girl named Akkoro only scowled. "Kill her if we have to. Just as long as we can drown that twerp!"
Korra felt rage at Akkoro's callous threat. Especially at the part of Kori.
"You're not getting anywhere near him."
Akkorro smirked and opened her arms, assembling her water in Octopus form.
"Bring it on, Avatar."
Then she motioned the tentacles of her Octopus form shoot at Korra. The Avatar fought back with her rough Waterbending style, breaking through the watery tentacles with her bare fists and bending Akkoro's own water against her. Akkoro snarled with frustration. She bended a blob of water, freezing it into a dagger and threw it straight at Korra, who dodged just as it brushed her shoulder. The ice dagger flew straight into the precedent, stabbed the picture of Korra's mystery girl right out of Mako's hand and impaled on the wall with the picture. Mako blinked at his empty hand, flexing his fingers, and to the wall. And then he, along with every other police officer in the building, heard the noises of the fight coming from outside.
"Looks like your ex is causing trouble again." A cop sniggered.
"Korra!"
Mako paid no heed to the taunt, just darting for the exit.
But Akkoro's male companion froze the doors of the station, keeping the officers inside.
"Hey!" Bolin shouted, outraged. "My brother's in there!"
The guy ignored him and called to Akkoro. "Come on, sis! Leave the Avatar! We need the kid!"
Akkoro narrowed her eyes and furrowed her brows. Then she pulled out something from her coat's pocket, an object that looked similar to a grenade, and threw it to the ground, unleashing a heavy fog of smoke. Coughing, Korra used her Airbending to lift the smoke. When the smoke cleared, the couple was gone.
"Oh great." She groaned.
"Korra!"
The police station's doors flew open, scattering the ice with every cop barging through. Mako was the first to run outside, heading right over to Korra.
"Korra! What happened? Are you ok?"
"I'm fine." Korra answered.
Bolin coughed heavily, honking like a goose-cat, and then shot a glare to his big brother. "I'm fine too, thanks for asking!"
Mako nervously chuckled, but then glanced to the mild destruction on the street. Then he glanced to Korra.
She put her hands up immediately. "This time, it wasn't my fault. They started it."
"They?"
"Some couple, they showed up out of nowhere and attacked us."
Mako quickly grasped her arm. "We need to get you out of here-"
Korra yanked her arm away. "That's the thing! They weren't after me! They're after Kori!"
"Kori?"
"You know, Kor-ree. The little hitchhiker we picked up from the Fire Nation? The one you don't like?"
"I know Kori. It's just, why are they after him? Who were they?"
"Waterbenders!" Bolin jumped in, providing Mako the information he needed on their newest attackers. "A guy and a girl! Brother and sister, I think by the way they speak to each to each. The sister is kinda a jerk to her brother, though."
"Did you catch their names?"
"I think the sister is named…Akkoro?"
At that, Mako froze.
"Akkoro? Are you sure?"
"Yes. Whoever they are, they got some guts. I mean, who's stupid enough to attempt to murder a kid, attack the Avatar and freeze the doors of a police station in the middle of the day?"
"Akkoro and Kamui, the Ketos siblings." Mako said, his voice low and deep, almost a growl.
Korra arched one of her eyebrows. "The Ketos siblings? What are they, criminals?"
"Worse. Bounty hunters."
Bolin gasped.
Korra was still curious. "Bounty hunters?"
"In other words, criminals paid to do crime." Mako explained, maintaining his snarl-like manner of speaking. "They destroy everything in their path to get their target and leaves the mess to law enforcement. Akkoro and Kamui are wanted for everything, from assault to littering. Those two calls themselves 'the Tui and La of Bounty Hunting' and even the new 'Katara and Sokka'."
Korra was disgusted by the sheer arrogance of the hunting siblings. "They got nothing on master Katara and her brother."
"Their speciality is drowning their victims with a single blob of water. They do it anywhere from a busy street to a walk in the park."
"That happened to Kori. I got it out of him and that's when we met the delightful brother and sister duo."
"They're wanted in the Water Tribes, the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom."
"Now they're wanted in Republic City,"
"Uh, guys?" Bolin interrupted. "One question. If they're after Kori…where's Kori?"
"With the kids." Korra answered.
"…Where are the kids?"
The Avatar froze for a minute and then freaked out. "Those crazy siblings went after them!"
Suddenly, Sora made a low, deep growl, startling the cops around her, and then floated away, presumably to find Kori.
"Hey, wheres the bison going?" Mako asked.
"She's going after Kori." Korra replied. "And so am I."
Korra put her two fingers to her mouth and whistled, summoning Naga. She mounted her steed and gave chase after the runaway bison.
Mako barked orders as he got on his moped. "You lot, come with me! We're going after the Avatar! You, let the chief know!"
"Wait for me!" Bolin cried, quickly jumping onto the moped before his brother took off after their friend.
As everyone hurried about outside, the dagger of ice melted, soaking the picture. Weakened by the water, the picture fell to the ground, unnoticed. If anyone noticed, they could see that the girl's colourless eyes remained, all big and wide, piercing into your soul.
Like ice.
The kids ran for their lives into a different part of the city. Eventually, they stopped to hide in an alleyway.
"Why are they after us? Korra's back there!" Kai exclaimed.
"I bet it's because of him!" Meelo shot an accusing finger at Kori who stood frozen in fear, Ikki maintaining a gentle grip on his arm.
Jinora frowned. "Really, Meelo?"
"He's right."
All heads turned to Kori. He still stood still, staring into nothing.
"They are after me.""
"…what?" Kai gasped.
"You left because you're being hunted?" Skoochy accused.
"You brought them with you?" Kai also accused.
"Don't blame him!" Ikki shouted, shooting her other arm across Kori to protect him from the boys' harsh words. "He left to get away from them!"
"They never stop coming for me…" Kori said to nobody, just staring into nothing, caught in a daze of horrible realisation.
Jinora got in between the boys and her sister to settle things down. "Look, Kori has every right to leave if he's being chased by those maniacs. Korra can handle them. We need to get home."
"But what if those guys get to the island too?" Skoochy panicked. "They're Waterbenders!"
"They won't stand a chance against my dad and the police will arrest them by then. Now, let's go."
The kids made a move to leave the alley. But a dagger of ice stabbed the ground, almost piercing Jinora's foot. The girl yelped, jumping back. Kai put his arms around her protectively and glowered at the woman sneering at them, accompanied by a scared man.
Akkoro and her brother Kamui.
"Leaving so soon?" Akkoro mocked. "But we just got here."
"Akkoro, those are Avatar Aang's grandkids." Kamui said, his voice on the verge of breaking. "They're Airbenders!"
"Stop whining and just attack!"
Akkoro blasted a gun of water at the kids just as Ikki jumped in front of Kori and blasted air back. The air pushed the water back, drenching Akkoro. The female bounty hunter snarled and shot short gushes of water like daggers at Ikki. Jinora, Meelo and Kai rushed in and blew the ice daggers away.
On the sidelines, Kamui was quivering as he stared at Skoochy. The man feared what the cocky boy could be capable of.
"I ain't a Airbender." Skoochy said, smirking.
Kamui sighed out of relief. But then Skoochy kicked his heel on the ground, bending the earth to send Kamui flying, crashing into his sister.
Kori stared either in awe or shock.
"Yeah, yeah, we're awesome, let's go!"
Skoochy grabbed Kori's wrist and tugged him along as he and the others ran for their lives again.
"They're getting away!" Akkoro shouted, pushing her brother off her.
She narrowed her eyes, her vision zooming in on the runaway kids, and then shot a rope of water, successfully capering and hoking in one of the kids.
But it wasn't Kori. It was the one nearest to him.
"Freeze!"
Mako, Korra, Bolin and several police officers finally appeared, guns and battle stances directed at the bounty hunters.
"Put your hands up!" Mako ordered.
Kamui gulped. On the other hand, his sister smirked sinisterly as she held her young hostage in a body of water, the child's chin dipped in it.
"Ikki!" Jinora cried.
"One more move and there's gonna be one less Airbender in the world." Akkoro sneered, curling her fingers in a claw form, the water rising to cover Ikki's mouth.
If the water reaches her nose…
Mako made his hardest glare, but he didn't move an inch, as did his fellow officers. Not even Korra could risk making a move, not when Ikki's life was hanging on a thread.
Ikki made a whimper, scared for her life.
Jinora was shaking in fear for her only sister, so Kai had to hold her. Skoochy struggled to hold a wild Meelo back.
Kori fisted his hands. Seeing her in the clutches of the bounty hunters made a foreign feeling bubble inside his chest, boiling over to reach his head.
"How about a trade? Her for the ki-"
The bounty huntress's sneering snark was cut off by a rock hitting her head.
The water dropped, releasing Ikki. The little Airbender immediately zoomed over to her older sister, tearfully embracing her.
"Who hit my sister?!" Kamui shouted.
Everyone turned to Bolin who burst out laughing at Akkoro's sudden attack to her head.
"It wasn't me!" He squeaked.
"Who did that?"
Skoochy was laughing as well, leading everyone's attention on him.
"Not me!" He protested.
"It was me."
All eyes switched to Kori.
The boy was standing by himself, glaring at the bounty hunters. His left hand was held in a claw position.
What was surprising was the small rocks floating around him.
"Kori's a Earthbender?" Korra questioned.
"No way…" Bolin breathed.
Ikki gasped out loud, her happy grin returning.
"You want me? Come and get me." Kori said.
With that, he flung his left arm, bending the rocks at the bounty hunters as fast as bullets. The siblings practically danced to avoid the rocks.
"What a man!" Ikki exclaimed, hearts in her eyes.
Her siblings just looked at her.
"You're so weird." Meelo noted.
And then, just as the bounty hunters were regaining their footing, Kori turned and ran. Without a second thought, Ikki zoomed after Kori on an Air Scooter.
"Ikki, no!" Jinora cried.
"Get back here, you little brat!" Akkoro roared.
A rumble was heard from above. A cloud descended from the sky and landed with a gush of dusty wind. The cloud growled ferociously at the bounty hunters, making Kamui sweat.
"Sora!" Kori called as he disappeared into the streets.
"Quit whimpering and get moving!" Akkoro shouted at her brother.
Kamui jolted and took off, using Waterbending to make an ice bridge over Sora, narrowly getting over her before the massive cloud rose to her feet and shattered the ice with her sheer size. Then the bison flapped her feet and tail, bending the air to sent Kamui and Akkoro flying off their trail after Kori.
"THATS IT!"
But then Akkoro, at the end of her rope, unleashed a great wave of ice engulfing the whole street, blocking the police, and trapping the sky bison.
"MOVE!"
With that, Akkoro grabbed her brother and ran in hot pursuit of their prey. The icy destruction they left behind slowly melted by Firebenders.
Mako's hot flames were rivalled by the blazing glower he wore.
"I hate bounty hunters!" He shouted angrily.
Elsewhere, Kori and Ikki hid in another alley.
Ikki peered around the corner, watching out for the bounty hunters or even her friends.
"I think we lost them." She noted.
She turned to Kori, unable to pull down the happy grin. She can't help it. She was alone with the man of her dreams!
But Kori had other things on his mind.
Another headache.
Kori groaned and dropped to his knees.
"Kori!"
Ikki zoomed to his side and gently hugged his arm.
"I haven't that much bending in years…" Kori moaned.
"All this running around is hurting you."
"That's not all what's hurting me."
Ikki looked at him with concern at what he said. Then she smiled at him.
"Thank you for saving me."
Kori turned his head to look at her. "You shouldn't get hurt because of me. They want me."
"But why?"
"I…I…ah…ah…ACHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
He sneezed.
And flew backwards in an incredible force of air, leaving Ikki bewildered.
"…wow."
"Kids?"
Korra, Mako, Bolin, Jinora, Kai, Skoochy, and Meelo followed Sora to another part of town. They looked for Kori and Ikki before the bounty hunters did. The police were searching for the bounty hunters as well.
"Ikki? Kor-"
Korra was abruptly cut off when a small tornado slammed into her, sending her crashing into a wall.
"Korra!" Mako yelled.
Amidst the dust and debris, Korra moaned as she felt a small body on top of her.
"Kori!" Ikki suddenly appeared and helped the body up from Korra. "Kori, are you okay?"
"…ow." Kori uttered.
Korra blinked at getting ignored. That and Kori flew into her.
Ironically, she didn't notice that Mako helped her up.
"What happened?" Kori slurred.
"…You just sneezed." Bolin said, shocked.
"And flew 10 feet across the street!" Skoochy exclaimed.
Kori raised a brow. "Really? It felt longer than that."
"He can airbend too?" Kai gasped.
"You're a Earthbender…and an Airbender…" Jinora whispered.
Korra's eyes grew larger in size with a revelation.
"We gotta get out of here. Come on!"
As soon as she said that, Korra grabbed Kori's hand and pulled him into a run, desperate to get him somewhere safe so she can confront him about his bending. The gang down an alley, only to stop when they met a metal wall.
"Dang it. A dead end."
The sound of gunshots was heard. Mountains of ice and waves of water were seen over building tops.
"Sounds like the police found Akkoro and Kamui." Bolin commented.
Kori's big icy eyes widened with fear. Without any warning, he thrust his arm out and fire blasted from his hand, at the metal wall. In sheer moments, a big hole was made, and everyone was, again, brown away. Kori paid no heed as he crawled through the hole and ran.
"Hey!"
Korra jumped agilely through the hole and followed the runaway boy into an abandoned building.
"Kori! We need to talk about this! You can't just bend Earth, Air and Fire without saying anything!"
"Ask if he has a girlfriend!" Ikki called from the hole in the wall.
"Seriously, Ikki?" Jinora quipped.
Kori breathed heavily as he ran up the stairs, coming into the roof. He stopped and sagged down, gasping with his hands on his knees.
"Man, you're fast for a little guy."
Kori jolted in surprise and turned around. Korra was standing there, arms crossed.
"You don't look like an Earthbender." She spoke.
If anything, Kori could've been a Firebender or a Waterbender, especially with his eyes.
Kori's face burned, his eyes narrowed, and his lip quivered. Korra wasn't sure if he was angry, embarrassed, or both.
"Well, uh, Well, you don't look like an Airbender, Firebender or Earthbender either!" He retorted.
He moved so fast, he could've Airbended. He managed to slip past Korra, heading for the exit but someone grabbed the back of his shirt, stopping his attempt at escape. That someone being a very annoyed police officer.
"I had enough of you." Mako growled, having enough of this kid driving him and Korra nuts.
Kori wiggled in his hold. "Let me go!"
"Why are the Ketos siblings after you? Are they the reason why you wanted to leave the Fire Nation? Why didn't you tell us before we left?"
Kori refused to talk and just glared at Mako.
So Mako shook him. "Answer me!"
"Mako!" Korra shouted. "Take it easy!"
"I can't help him if he won't tell us why he's being chased by bloodthirsty bounty hunters!"
"That's not helping! That's intimidating him!"
"They're after me, ok!"
Korra and Mako stopped arguing and looked to Kori. Mako realised the boy as the latter talked.
"It's not just Akkoro and Kamui. For the past four years, I have been chased by bounty hunters. They never stop coming for me. It's been four years…"
The ex-couple stared at Kori, bewildered at what they heard.
"They're after you?" Mako questioned.
"You have a bounty?" Korra followed. "You have a swarm of bounty hunters after you What did you do, commit mass murder? Stole cabbages?"
"No, I-"
But then Kori got another headache. But this one was worse. He screamed in pain and dropped to his knees.
"Kori!"
Both Korra and Mako went to Kori's aid, each at either side of him. The poor boy was rocking back and forth on his knees, hands on his head as he breathed heavily.
"My head…it hurts…" Kori moaned.
Seeing Kori in so much pain caused Mako's suspensions (and jealousy) to crash down once he finally realised how serious his condition was.
"You're hurt."
"I can't…breathe…"
Kori's vision begun to get blurry. His head was bringing him into a spin, and he was finding it hard to breathe. Overwhelmed, he fell forward, almost on his stomach until Mako picked him up and cradled him in his arms.
He was built so small in Mako's arms.
"Forget the orphanage. We need to take him to the hospital immediately!"
"We need to take him first."
The Ketos siblings were on the roof with them.
Mako clutched Kori closer to his chest. Korra stepped in front of Mako and Kori as she glared right at the murderous siblings.
"It's an honour to have a brawl with you, Avatar." Akkoro purred. "Now, if you please, hand over the kid."
"Not a chance." Korra answered, cracking her knuckles. "Mako, I'll handle them. Get Kori to the hospital."
Although Mako wanted to stay and help (as well as arrest a couple of arrogant bounty hunters), he understood that Kori needed to get to safety and have his injuries looked over.
So, Korra made the first move to distract the siblings, allowing Mako to get away. But Kamui blocked his path while Akkoro and Korra clashed.
On the ground faraway, the others could see the fight if ice and water on a high rooftop.
"There they are!" Bolin cried, pointing.
"Hand over the kid!" Kamui demanded.
Mako tightened his hold around said kid. "I don't take orders from criminals."
"I'm not a criminal! I'm a bounty hunter! There's a difference!"
"Yeah, criminals get arrested for their crimes. Bounty hunters get paid for theirs."
"Right!"
Mako rolled his eyes. He wanted to burn off the guy's arrogant sneer, but he focused all his strength on keeping Kori safe in his arms, protecting him from Kamui.
Unfortunately, his strength wasn't enough as Kamui eventually managed to tear Kori from him, with a body of water acting as a third hand.
Kori wiggled weakly in the water's grip.
"Hey, sis! I got him!" Kamui exclaimed.
"Well, get rid of him anyway!" His sister shouted.
"No!" Korra cried.
Kamui set Kori on the edge of the roof. Kori wobbled, struggling to stand with the wind beating against his back, but luckily, he stayed up.
"Bye-bye!" Kamui bid with an evil grin.
Then Kamui blasted water at Kori, pushing him right off the roof. Time seemed to run slow as Kori screamed and somersaulted in the air, falling to his death. All Korra and Mako could do was watch in absolute horror.
"Kori's flying off the roof!" Jinora shrieked when she saw his form falling from a distance.
Without a first thought, Ikki left a trail of dust, pushing her airbending to its limit, soaring as fast as she could to get there and save the boy who captured her heart. But she was too far away. There were too many obstacles in her way; cars, people, buildings.
She wouldn't make it in time.
The blood rushing up and down his body as violent as the ocean's waves, Kori lost consciousness, eyes closed yet he could hear the
faint cries of the people he just met who tried to protect him.
"Kori!"
"Kori!"
"KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!"
Then his eyes snapped open.
Ikki wasn't anywhere near him to save him, but she was close enough to witness him fly upwards just before he hit the pavement. The Earth remained still and cool.
She skidded to a stop and stared in shock.
"What…?"
Somehow, he Airbended back up to the roof. Korra, Mako and the bounty hunters covered their eyes from the fierce wind blowing.
Slowly, Korra peeked.
Kori was hovering in the air above her in a hurricane. His clothes were flapping against his body. His bandana was gone, releasing a mane of long, dark hair, cut sharply like vines. A frown wore on his face. His once cool-coloured eyes were glowing entirely black with a hint of teal.
"Kori?" She asked.
It was like he was in…
…Avatar State.
Kori, stuck in whatever trace, suddenly thrust his arms out, unleashing strong gushes of wind at the bounty hunters, blowing them off the roof. Kamui and Akkoro screamed, disappearing into the sky until they became stars.
For some reason, Korra can't bend the air, so she forced herself through and called out for the child in the air.
"Kori! Kori, snap out of it!"
Kori remained stuck in his trace, unfazed in his mystical fury.
She begun to get desperate. "I'm here! I'm here if you need me!"
Her words echoed in Kori's mind.
"I'm here…I'm here if you need me…"
Suddenly, the air calmed down. And once the last wisps dissolved, Kori's eyes closed, and he dropped like a heavy rock.
Korra reached out and caught him.
…Just as Sora appeared right in front of her, growling menacingly. Meeka and Mooney, both on the bison's head, peered down in worry for their human friend.
Korra held a hand down in peaceful surrender. "Easy, girl. I just want to help him. Please."
Surprisingly, Sora's threatening growls softened. With that settled, Korra knelt and positioned Kori into a cradle in her arms, a hand holding the back of his head.
Immediately, she felt something in his head through her bending.
Something made of metal.
Something metal in his brain.
Then the bony end of a long, white staff poked the side of Kori's head. Korra glanced, seeing that it was Skoochy doing the poking, and slapped the stick away.
"Stop that!" She snapped.
"Hey! I was just checking!" He protested.
"Korra! Mako!"
Bolin, Kai, Jinora, Naga, Ikki, Pabu, and Meelo were soon on roof.
"That was so freaky!" Bolin was saying to Mako.
Ikki was already kneeling at Korra's side and panicking about Kori. "We saw everything! We saw Kori fall, I tried to save him, but I wasn't fast enough, but then he Airbended, it was amazing, but it was scary as well, I was so scared, is he ok? Is he dead? Please be alive, please!"
Kori's small body moved, pleasing Ikki. He made a groan and his eyes opened slowly. The cradling position gave Korra the perfect view of his face.
More importantly, his eyes.
The pale blue colour seemed to brighten to a shiny, piercing shade of ice.
Ice…
Korra visualised swapping Kori's roughed face for the mysterious little girl from her vision.
Same nose…same freckles…same hair colour…
Same eyes.
Then Kori lost all consciousness and his eyes shut with his head falling back.
Korra grinned. "It's her."
Mako looked at her, confused. "Who?"
"Her! The little girl from my vision! The eyes are the same!"
"Kori is a chick?" Skoochy asked.
"The correct and most preferred term is girl." Jinora quipped.
Ikki just stared at Kori, unchanged by the news.
But Mako was skeptical. Being a police officer and all.
"Are you sure?"
He wanted to be sure, for Korra's sake. That was a chance that she could be wrong.
(Which is rare.)
"Yes! Look at how long her hair is!"
"Long hair doesn't make him a girl."
Korra glanced at the unconscious child in her arms and pulled down their top, which was already loose from the Airbending. As she hoped, dull white fabrics were wrapped around their chest area.
"How about the chest bindings?"
"Circumstantial."
Suddenly, Ikki screamed. "They're bleeding!"
"Where?"
Ikki pointed to a blood-soaked area on their pants. "There! On their-"
"I see it!" Korra cut her off.
Bolin quickly turned away with a blush.
"They have…moon blood?" Jinora trembled.
"Ain't that a girl thing?" Skoochy asked, blushing.
"Yes, it is."
"Well, it's a girl!" Kai commented jokingly.
His girlfriend shot him a fierce glare, shutting him up.
Silence fell heavy with that realisation.
…
…
…
…
…
Until Meelo broke it by triumphantly cheering.
"I knew it! I knew he was weird!"
"Mr Meiji, if you cannot make the payments, I'm afraid I will have to report you to the police."
The tawny-haired man wearing glasses and a burgundy suit smirked at her. "Ms Sato, I assure you, I will pay the bills. It's just my business is in a rocky state and it's not because of my Earthbending employees..."
Asami glared at her client, arms folded over her chest. This man clearly underestimated her due to her gender, beauty, and caring personality.
Her difficult client was Mr Meiji. Republic City's rising star tycoon. His business, Restoration Limited, rivalled Future Tech Industries in size, money, and exports. He was charismatic and intelligent man, her most important client, a man she respected since the beginning of her career.
Now Asami was losing her respect for him by how he attempted to cheat her.
"This is serious. I will not be taken advantage of."
"Asami-"
"That's Ms Sato to you."
"You can spare some compassion for a loyal customer, can't you? I stayed when your company lost investors after your father was exposed as an Equalist."
Now he was attempting to emotionally manipulate her under the cloak.
I wonder if I could get Korra to intimidate him…
But before she acted on her thought, some of her employees turned up the volume on a radio, allowing a broadcast by Shiro Shinobi to blurt out.
"Breaking news! The Avatar is causing a brawl with two bounty hunters right on the streets today! But for once, she's not the target. Rather, they were after some kid! The police are on the scene and- WHOA! Did he just Earthbend! And Airbend? Looks like we have two Avatars!"
Asami gasped at what she heard. "Korra!"
Her difficult client looked just as surprised.
"We'll discuss this later. Farewell, ms Sato." He bid as quick as he walked away.
"Meiji-"
He had already gotten into his stretch satomoblie and left the factory. In his vehicle, Meiji ordered his driver to turn in the radio.
"According to history, only the Avatar can bend the four elements. How does history explain a little boy going in what appears to be Avatar State? How on, I got confirmation that he's a girl! Whoa!"
Meiji's head begun to sweat with worry. He was a man renowned for his confidence. But now, his confidence was crashing down, as much as a wall.
"After all this time, she's still alive? And she's here? With the Avatar?!"
Did you catch any The Last Airbender references?
The chapter's name is Breathless for three reasons:
Ikki was breathless by Kori, leading to her for fall in love with them.
Kori is breathless, hurt and weak after all they've been through.
Everyone breathless by Kori bending three elements and going into what seemed to be Avatar State.
Akkoro and Kamui the Ketos siblings got their names from two mythical sea monsters.
The Akkorokamui is a giant octopus from Ainu folklore.
The kētŏs / cetus is a sea monster from Greek mythology that the hero Persues killed to save princess Andromeda.
