I Promise
2nd September 1972
All the new Gryffindors were excited to start competing for the house cup, but the first of them to actually earn any points for their house was a little girl with thick red hair called Lily Evans.
She raised her hand in Potions, while the rest of them were still getting their books and quills out, and asked a question in a fluid, musical voice.
Slughorn gave a boom of laughter and told her she showed a lot of promise, but James wasn't concentrating on any of the words said. His gaze had caught on Lily, and the way the blue light from the dungeon lamps made her hair shine almost purple, and the way her green eyes sparkled when Slughorn awarded five points to Gryffindor.
He nudged the boy next to him, Sirius Black, who he'd met on the train.
"Have you talked to her yet?" he whispered.
Sirius followed his gaze and shrugged. "Not really. Marlene said she's nice, though. Why?"
"Because one day I'm going to marry her," James said determinedly.
Sirius gave a short bark of laughter that made Remus Lupin turn around from the table in front and glare at him.
"I mean it," James said, still staring at Lily. "I'm going to marry her. You'll see. I promise."
As if she could feel him watching her, Lily turned around and caught his eye. James lifted a hand in a half-wave, and she gave him a small, shy smile.
"I promise," he whispered again."
A/N: Just a little tiny one to finish off the collection! I loved writing this and hope you enjoyed reading! This was originally written for the 'I'll Read Fluff if I Want To' challenge over on fanfictalk . net and I followed a different prompt for each chapter. Really enjoyed being able to give Lily and James some happy moments. If you'd like more of them, my story 'Make Me Feel Alive' is set in the same universe, with Marlene and Sirius as the main characters but some big presence from James and Lily. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! Every review really makes my day. I can't reply to guest reviews but please know how much I appreciate you taking the time to let me know you're enjoying reading! Until next time! Jem xx
