Rick is still afloat on the Manda head, traveling through the flooded Markson. A rescue team should have arrived by now. Apart from the odor coming from the severed head, he's been doing fine since he escaped the Matango. The biggest concern now is Godzilla, who is much worse than an infectious mushroom. Conveniently, Rick can see Godzilla moving behind two buildings. He appears to be carrying a dead Manda in his hand and is heading in the direction of the ocean. Godzilla is leaving the city; this nightmare is almost over.
Everything that's happened today, the chaos caused by these kaiju, is the sole reason he doesn't want to have a child with Natalie. He doesn't want a kid to grow up in a world with giant monsters stomping around. However, this is how life is for people now. Rick realizes there's already plenty of newborn babies that are going to live through this new era of history, so maybe he should have his own baby after all. He never wanted to have a childless mirage, nearly every couple on Earth has at least one kid, he only let his anxiety doubt it. But even kaiju can't stop him from having a happy life, which is why he's changed his mind about answering Natalie's question.
Rick hears someone shouting, and despite how faint it is, they might be shouting his name. He scans the surrounding area, before looking up at a nearby building, where two people are standing on the roof, with one of them waving at him. It's a man and woman, but Rick quickly recognizes the woman.
"Natalie!?" he yells.
"Rick!" she yells back.
Rick can tell it's her from her voice, causing him to smile. She was safe all along, and he couldn't be happier. Luckily, the currents are pushing the Manda head towards that very building, or else he'd have to break through a window to get onto the roof. The man with Natalie climbs down a crater on the side of the building, as Rick stands up, trying not to fall off the head. The man above him reaches his hand out, but Rick waits until the Manda head isn't moving as much. Eventually, he jumps, catching the hand of that man, who pulls him up.
"Thank you so much, sir." he says to him.
"Don't mention it." the man replies.
Rick climbs out of the crater, now on the roof, with more people taking refuge up here. He's then met by Natalie, who hugs him tightly, as he does the same. Rick gives her a lengthy kiss, as his eyes tear up, just like his wife.
"I was so worried about you!" Natalie cries.
"I was even more worried." Rick replies.
"You were still in the hospital when the city was flooded, weren't you?" Natalie asks.
"I was trapped in there, Godzilla and the Mandas prevented us from escaping." Rick answers. "I and a few other people managed to get out alive. Most of us didn't make it."
He can tell Natalie is saddened by his story, she knows the doctors that didn't survive were Rick's friends, he's told her plenty of work stories. But Rick purposely left out the Matango, now that they're gone, he will never speak of it to anyone. He refuses to tell Natalie that his friend George had to be put down because he was going to turn into a mushroom monster. As for the other survivors, if they're still alive, they'll obviously tell the press about the Matango. Hopefully nobody believes them, every trace of the Matango's existence has been destroyed.
"Natalie, there's something else I need to tell you." Rick says, ready to give her the long-awaited answer. "I know this isn't a good time, but it's something you'll want to hear regardless."
Natalie stares blankly at him, unprepared for undoubtedly great news.
"I've made my decision. We are going to have a child at some point."
Natalie places both her hands on her heart, trying to contain her excitement. She hugs Rick, as he smiles with satisfaction.
"I'm glad you made up your mind, Rick." Natalie tells him, clearly about to cry tears of joy.
"I promise that our family will live a long, happy life. Nothing, not even Godzilla can take that away." Rick says.
The sound of helicopters interrupts him, as he spots one up in the sky. Other choppers can be seen in the distance, they're finally being rescued. Rick and his wife, along with the other people on the roof, wave their hands, shouting at the helicopter hovering above them.
It might take a long time for all the saltwater in Markson to recede, so Rick and Natalie will have to live somewhere else for the next few weeks, or months. If not, then they'll just get a new home entirely. The second possibility would be better for their baby. Today was hell for Rick and his wife, but from this point forward, things can only get better.
The End
