Enjoy the Mido Chapter!
Even if he worked at the most prestigious highschool in the country, Mido was still a teacher. Which meant that the pay left a lot to be desired. Lucky for him, he had a lucrative part time job. But it wasn't the most stable, mostly big pays that came around once a year, if that. So Mido's accustomed to a humble life. When he got his current job, he moved into a cheap apartment in a shady area near Akademi High. It definitely wasn't the best place, but it was a practical choice. Mido was more than capable of defending himself, plus the money he saved from renting here instead of a higher quality apartment could come in handy.
Megamo Saikou offered to pay for his lodgings at one of the hotels his family owned, with everything including the food and transportation to be paid for. But Mido wasn't an idiot, unlike Mujo who wholeheartedly agreed. Mido knew it was just a way for Megamo to keep tabs on them, not that he wasn't anymore. The person he hired to tail Mido was doing a shit job, but that only worked in Mido's favor. He'd rather not have that brat aware of his moves. Especially since Mido prioritizes getting results over Megamo's childish desires to protect his beloved school.
There was screaming from the apartment beside him when Mido left for work that day, but that was normal. He didn't even know their names but he's already learned to tune out the man's hysterical shouts and the woman- presumably his wife's- high-pitched sobs. He was a teacher, after all. You learn to enjoy peace even with the neverending noise.
His tail was there, as usual. With that gaudy overcoat and tacky large hat that attempted to hide his face. It's honestly insulting that Megamo hired a tail so terrible to follow him, of all people, around. His freelance work requires him to be observant, and the brat didn't think he wouldn't catch on to something of this level? He had to laugh. No wonder the murderer hasn't been caught yet.
It would've bothered Mido more if he hadn't been the type who prefers staying indoors. As it were though, his tail just spent most of his hours standing outside of Mido's apartment. The idiot left him alone once he arrived at school so he didn't have to worry about him during most of the day. Megamo probably thought he could keep Mido in check while he was in school grounds, but that was his mistake.
Once he arrived at school, he headed to the faculty to leave his things before heading to the rooftop. A student had told him it had a nice view and that it was the perfect place to go if you wanted to clear your thoughts. As she said, there were a few students there. But the rooftop was vast enough that you could still talk to someone in private if you wanted to. In fact, there was specifically a spot here for that.
At the southern side, where you can look over the field and the gym, there was an entrance on each corner. Behind that though is a small area, separated by a large ventilation system that only left a narrow opening. The vent was loud, but Mido didn't mind. It dissuaded eavesdroppers too.
There, he waited. As he did, he thoroughly examined every corner and every crevice around the area, making sure the place wasn't bugged.
Not long after, only half an hour before classes start in fact, a student arrived. Kokoro Momoiro. She was a gyaru, a member of the so-called bullies who were led by Mutsumi Rokuda, more commonly known as Musume Ronshaku. She was the student who died earlier this week.
"I-I'm sorry for making you wait, sensei." she blushed, panting after presumably running up the stairs.
"It's fine, I understand." he smiled. "I heard your parents arguing this morning."
She clenched her jaw. "It's nothing new."
"I figured." he caressed her hair. "Are you alright? Your father doesn't hit you, does he?"
"No," her cheeks brightened once again. "He's not violent… he just argues with mom a lot. And it's not like she makes things any better, she's always picking fights then playing the victim afterwards."
"Well, that's good to hear." he said. "Adults can be very unreasonable, I'm sorry you have to go through all that."
"It's fine. I'm gonna move out once I graduate anyway."
"That's right, just hang in there. And if anything happens, tell me, okay?"
"I will, thank you so much, Mido-sensei." her eyes were becoming moist. "You have no idea how much this means to me."
"Now now, don't think too much of it. It's not like I've done anything big." he said. And it was true, but that was what's great about teenagers. All you had to do was listen to them blabber about nonsense and flatter them a bit, then they'll give themselves to you completely.
"It was! I've never had anyone who was willing to just listen to me before. Even the guidance counselor, Genka-sensei, who goes around saying she'll do anything for her students' safety and happiness is just out to protect herself and her reputation." Bitterness dripped from her voice and Mido had to stop himself from smirking. "She's the worst. Do you know she goes around claiming that bullying isn't an issue in this school and that all the students are well-behaved? Forget the delinquents who haven't been expelled for some reason, loads of students here are outright terrible. You'll be surprised at what our group has gotten away with."
Her group, the bullies. Not her friends, she never saw them as such. Kokoro had been bullied in her previous school. The trauma from that resulted in her becoming a bully herself, so she wouldn't be a target. It was cowardly, in Mido's opinion. But this girl was an asset, so he wasn't about to say that to her face.
"It was horrible… and I knew it was horrible, but it's not like they would've listened to me if I said anything." she argued. "It's not my fault they became a target. I had to work hard so I wouldn't, you know? They should've known better too."
"Of course. You've worked really hard, Kokoro-chan." he said. "It's alright now, those idiots can't hurt you anymore."
"But what about the killer going around school right now?!" her eyes wide with fear and her outburst startled Mido. Ah yes, this was why he agreed to meet with her. At first he only found it convenient that his neighbor was a student, with family issues at that. He figured he could make her his pawn, but it seemed like she knew more than he expected.
"We're doing our best to catch the criminal, so you don't have to worry about that, okay?" he smiled. "... Unless you know something."
She took several deep breaths, pacing around the small area of solitary space where they were having their private conversation.
"God, I knew it. I knew something bad would happen, but Mutsumi just laughed it off! She said her dad was really powerful and no one would go after her." she said. "And yeah, I believed that. But what if I was targeted? Mutsumi's got the security, but I'm a nobody! The others weren't worried either, even though their parents weren't exactly bigshots. So I figured I was fine, right? And it's not like I ever did much! I just played along to whatever the others were doing! In fact, I was the one who held them back most of the time."
"Kokoro-chan, calm down," he said. "What made you think you'd be targeted?"
"That psycho is obviously targeting the bullies!" she snapped. "Like, who does he think he is? Some kind of hero?."
"Bullies?" he raised a skeptical eyebrow.
"Yeah!"
"Isn't it probably just a coincidence?"
"No way! Sensei, the teachers wouldn't know this, but there's actually loads of fucked up people among the students." she said. "Like, I know our group is known as the bullies, but there are people way worse than us out there! They just get off on acting like angels. Musume noticed it last year, you know? It was when Tetsuya Kajima from class 3-1 disappeared. It happened just a week after his ex-girlfriend Yuki Kuroko dropped out because a sex tape of her got leaked everywhere! Everyone saw it, and rumor has it that he's been blackmailing her over it for years."
"Ever since then, it's hard not to see the pattern." she shifted uncomfortably. "Kashiko's always up to date on the latest gossip, so we always knew something was up with these victims. Hoshiko's always laughing about how they had it coming but that heartless bitch isn't any different from them!"
"Isn't Kashiko the one who likes to spread false rumors?" he said. "Maybe those things about the victims aren't true."
"She always tells us when they're fake! She even likes to laugh about it and how much it's ruined other people's lives." she said. "And the others backed her up on some of them."
How interesting…
"God… Musume's dead." Tears were forming in the corners of her eyes, but Mido knew it wasn't from grief. It was fear. "Hoshiko's already taking the lead, the others aren't doing shit about it! That sadistic bitch is going to get us killed!"
"Calm down," he smiled placatingly. "Even if it's true, the killer won't target you. They'll target Hoshiko, won't they?"
"But what if they don't?!" she choked out. "What if Hoshiko makes me do her dirty work? And then those weak idiots will blame me, and get me killed! It's not my fault! If I don't go along with what they say, I'll be the one getting bullied! I'm just trying to survive!"
Ah, to call someone a weak idiot when that's exactly what you are. Mido wanted to roll his eyes. But then again, he chose to get close to this one because of how foolish she was.
What a pitiful girl. Honestly, without her looks, she'd have nothing going for her. Although her survival instincts probably did work in her favor, considering how pathetic she was.
He grasped her hands between his and gave her his gentlest smile. "Don't worry, okay? You'll be alright, I promise." he said, wrapping his arms around her to hold her close and whisper into her ear. "I'll protect you. So just trust in me, okay?"
"S…" a sniffle, he could feel her trembling underneath his fingertips. "Sensei… Th-thank you so much!"
What a simplistic girl. Mido was able to safely roll his eyes now that she couldn't see his facial expression. Well, at least she was useful. Now all he had to do was look into what she was saying.
Mido didn't believe for a second that the killer was a vigilante. No, the M.O. would be more narcissistic if that was the case. But this was a start, at least.
Mido told Kokoro to get herself together before leaving their little meeting area and he went ahead. It would be suspicious if they were seen together anyway. He didn't want to deal with the bratty president so early on.
Initially, he was on his way back to the teacher's lounge when he received a text message from Genka, asking him to fetch Mujo for her. The arrogant bitch, did she think he was her lackey?
Well, whatever. Mido's dealt with worse annoyances. At least she was entertaining and not a mindless pawn like Mujo. He must be incredibly talented for the Saikou brat to hire him. Unlike teachers, surely there were many more qualified healthcare professionals than the gullible coward who was one well-placed insult away from a mental breakdown.
Thinking about it now, that's probably why Megamo Saikou chose him, very easy to keep in line. Unlike Mido. That's also probably why Genka wanted to speak with him; to make sure he doesn't randomly break down in front of the students.
How pathetic. Well, if it does end up happening, at least it'll be very entertaining.
Mido snickered as he made his way to the infirmary. He planned to mess with Mujo a little bit, it's so fun seeing him squirm. But he hadn't expected a crowd to be there.
One of them was a first year student, he only recognized him because the boy suddenly transferred to Akademi during the current dangerous situation and coincidentally at the same week Mido and Mujo arrived. It was suspicious, so they gave Mido the boy's file. He looked harmless enough, but Mido still decided to look into the boy at some point.
Two of them he recognized to be his students, from Class 2-1. Osano Najimi, an average student but bright enough to be one of the few suspicious of Mido's sudden appearance. He had taken note to keep an eye on the boy, but there were no indications that he was a major threat or even a person of interest.
The other was Ayano Aishi.
A quiet girl who didn't have many friends. She seemed like such a smart girl but she had the cutest reaction when Mujo touched her. He considered making her his side project while he was here.
"Is everything alright?" he asked, brows knitting in practiced worry.
"Ah, yes, Rana-sensei. None of us are injured or anything." she said hurriedly. "We just wanted to make sure Mujo-sensei is adjusting alright."
"Is that so?" How strange. "Well, class is about to start soon, so you lot better get going. I have some adult stuff to speak about with Mujo-san."
"Ah, of course," Ayano said, quickly grabbing her bag. "Thank you for indulging us, Mujo-sensei."
"It's nothing." The oaf looked so peeved and the way he was trying to maintain his mask was so funny.. "Stop by anytime, as long as you're not skipping class, you're entirely welcome."
"Thanks, Mujo-sensei!" Hanako said and Mido watched them leave, eyes trailing after Ayano as the gears started turning in his head.
"What do you want now?" Mujo scowled once the
"And they call me a snake." he snorted. " Don't get your panties in a twist, I was told to come here."
"Why?"
Mido crossed his arms. "Genka-chan wants to speak to you."
He frowned. "What about?"
You can't be that stupid.
"I don't know." he lied. "But if you'd like me to snoop around all over your business, that can be arranged."
Mujo glared before silently stuffing all the paperwork in his desk into a box before hurrying out the door, not acknowledging Mido the entire time. Despite that, Mido trailed after him.
"Well, it's good to see that you're adjusting well. The students are much more welcoming than they were during our time… or so they seem." he said. "Those two students are actually from my class. They seem like the type to keep to themselves, so I wouldn't let your guard down around them, if I were you."
Mujo scowled. "You can't possibly think they're suspects, do you?"
"Not at all." he hummed. "But you're so gullible, I can't help but feel concerned. They're probably just taking advantage of the new nurse to skip class, you know? Or this could be some setup for an elaborate prank. Gaining the new teacher's trust so you can humiliate them later, that sort of thing. Kids can be so cruel and manipulative."
"Don't talk about them like that." he hissed, wary of anyone overhearing. "They're good kids. And you better stay away from Ayano-chan."
"Ooohh, so overprotective." he smirked. "Are you claiming dibs on her?"
Mujo spluttered and glared at a snickering Mido. "Don't lump me in with you."
"Why are you making me out to be some monster? It's not like I force anyone into anything, I suppose women just find me irresistible." he shrugged. "You shouldn't be so quick to judge. Take Ayano-chan for example. She seems like a nice, diligent girl, but who knows? Maybe she's like most of my previous students… an attention-seeking slut."
His collar was roughly grabbed but he expected it, digging his heels on the ground and grabbing Mujo's wrist. This resulted in a stalemate, with the two of them face to face. Mujo's gentle face was scrunched up in a disgusted scowl, eyes filled with such hatred that Mido actually gained a little respect for him.
"You're too short-tempered, you know that?" he scoffed. "Have you forgotten where we are?"
He glanced behind him, to the long hallway where a few students were mingling. Thankfully, they hadn't noticed.
Mujo's grip tightened and Mido considered if the bastard was actually going to hit him. But it ended with Mujo roughly pushing Mido back.
"Ayano-chan was kind enough to help me during my first day here, and she was kind enough to check on me again with her friends today." he hissed. "If you lay a hand on her, and I will know, I will kill you."
Mido, for all his knowledge of human psychology and body language, couldn't for the life of him decide if Mujo was genuinely serious about that threat. Jesus Christ, why was he the one that needed to be kept in check when they had this ticking time bomb? Thank God, Genka decided to talk to him.
"Duly noted." he drawled out.
Mujo scowled, walking away with hurried, furious steps. This time, Mido didn't follow.
Well, that was more interesting than he thought it would be. He made a mental note to leave the man alone for a while, though, to let him cool off. In the meantime, he had other matters to look into.
Ayano Aishi. She looked like someone who cared little about the world around her and only did things that were necessary. Was he wrong with his assessment?
Mido was too prideful to even consider such a thing, so he immediately defaulted to suspicion. A girl like that, coincidentally making good friends with Mujo and going out of her way to suck up to him?
He'll have to look into her. And he'll be lying if he said he wasn't looking forward to it. Mido had been worried that juggling two jobs wouldn't leave him time for his hobbies but looks like fate is smiling down on him.
I hope you liked it! Special thanks again to AmeliaBD for proofreading this!
I tried to make Mido dark, which is kinda hard when the main character literally kills people lol. What did you guys think?
