DISCLAIMER: STEPHENIE MEYER OWNS IT ALL
Chapter 23
EDWARD
I ignored the other room's angry voices and focused on little Skylar perched on my lap. She was curled up, staring at me with her big brown eyes. I kissed her red furry head while stroking her back. My adorable girl. I had missed my little puppy more than I could imagine. Spending quality time with her and Bella was on the top of my priority list for the four-day Rio trip.
Skylar whined a little, her head turning toward the doorway. She was disturbed by the chaos. I didn't care much for it. After the nightmare of having Kate on board, I needed mental peace. My phone buzzed with a message from the aviation department. We were running late.
The yacht arrived in Fort Lauderdale around noon, where I had made accommodation arrangements for the day in two penthouses at the Four Seasons. Seth had flown in from Chicago with Skylar and Jack-which was a surprise-via a chopper a few hours before us. Bella and I were over the moon to see her again. We spent our day playing with her when she wasn't napping.
My gaze turned to the doorway when Tanya cleared her throat. She crossed her arms over her chest. "Dude, do you want to help here?"
"No," I said simply, and she rolled her eyes.
"Edward, come on! I can't take more of this! Please!"
"No, find someone else." And she left.
Skylar put her paws on my jacket as she yelped toward the doorway. "It's not our fight, baby. Every time Alice and Emmett get into a dumb fight does not mean I have to solve it. Right? Why do I have to be busy with something all the time?"
"Because we are late for the airport," Bella muttered sternly from the doorway with a pointed look. "I know you are trying to exclude yourself from this, I understand that. But, Skylar needs to sleep on the flight as does Jack. Rosalie and Jack are asleep in the other suite. Do you want Rosalie to wake up and worry about this in her condition? Come on, sweetheart. Help, please?"
Skylar whined at Bella before gazing at me. I sighed defeatedly. I was worrying about Rosalie and Jack. Fine.
"Let's do this, Sky."
Lifting Skylar in my arms, I followed Bella to the living room of the penthouse where the voices came from. My eyes widened as I took in the view. Alice and Emmett were almost ready for a physical fight while Peter held grey and red minister robes. Vanessa was recording the entire scene on her phone. Skylar hid her face against me, trying to avoid looking at everyone.
"What the fuck is going on here?!" I yelled, startling everyone.
There was pin drop silence for two seconds before Peter, Emmett, and Alice began talking at once, making no sense. I held up a finger to pause them.
"One person at a time."
Peter sighed impatiently. "I was showing her the robes I bought to officiate the wedding and she got mad!"
"You are not wearing a robe while officiating my wedding!"
"Why not!"
Emmett spoke up. "She didn't tell me that Peter was officiating the wedding. When I offered, she said no!"
"Because Jasper had promised Peter that he could officiate our wedding when we got engaged. A year ago! I didn't tell you because you would be upset," Alice growled. "You are not performing a five-minute stand-up comedy routine at my wedding rehearsal!" She gazed at me with a terrified look. "He was practicing his jokes on Bella and Tanya!"
Bella raised her hand with an apologetic smile. "That one's on me, I'm sorry."
Alice sighed at her. "It's not your fault, Bella. Do you know why she gave him the dare? Because he flew to Kentucky where we had our first bachelorette party to scare us! Emmett was going to dress up as a clown and scare me! For my bachelorette party! What kind of a moron does that? You will not tell jokes at my wedding, better yet, you are not going to give any kind of speech at my wedding!"
"I'm going to do something!" Emmett glared at her. "You are letting Peter officiate the wedding! Where's Jazz? That bastard slipped out of here! I'm going to kill him!"
"Okay, how many for the red one?" Peter asked, holding the red robe toward the crowd.
Tanya grew impatient. "Guys, we are running late. Let's just-"
"Stay out of this, everyone," Emmett cut her off.
I pinched the bridge of my nose and took a deep breath. Patience, patience, patience. They are good people. Nobody needs to get hurt tonight.
"I'm going to say a few things right now," I said calmly and continued. "And everyone has to listen. Peter," I glanced at him. "On any other day, these robes were perfect for officiating a wedding but Alice has specific plans for the wedding, stick to it. Where's Cynthia? She was right here," I found Peter's stylist standing at the far end of the room. "Cynthia, come closer. I can't see you."
Cynthia stepped forward with an anxious grin. I had no idea why she was always so terrified of me. "Peter asked me to get the robes for his fitting-"
I cut her off. "I know, I'm sorry you had to travel all the way here. Alice must have given you specific instructions for his suit."
She nodded. "It's ready."
"Do you have it here?"
"Um, no. Peter told me not to get it. The suit is in LA."
I ran a hand through my hair. "Okay, here's the thing. We have a few private jets flying from various locations to Rio on Friday for the wedding guests. We have two flights from LA. The first one leaves tomorrow at eleven in the evening, the second one takes off at eight the following morning. Ask your assistant to put that suit on any of the flights. I need that thing by Sunday."
"Yes, Edward. It'll be on the plane tomorrow night."
"Thanks."
Peter groaned. "Edward-"
My glare made him pause. "Shut it," I gazed at my siblings. "Emmett, you will not perform any dumb comedy routine at Alice's wedding rehearsal. It's her day, she gets to decide."
Emmett threw her a dirty look. "She lied to me! Alice said that she got a minister to officiate the wedding!"
"Oh god, stop it! Emmett, you will get your chance in the future. Enough with the crap. Jasper promised Peter, you are already in the wedding party, stop whining. It's our sister's wedding, can you focus on the security and less on these gory details? And Alice, stop blowing things out of proportion! I know it's your wedding but things can be handled without lashing out at everyone!"
"Why do you and Emmett always get into stupid arguments and I have to intervene to stop them?! I haven't had a break in one year! Four days, that's all I'm asking for!" I yelled. "Bella, please wake up Rosalie and tell the rest to meet us at the entrance. Tanya, call Jazz. Tell him not to loiter in the reception lobby. If someone finds out we're staying here, there will be more than a few photographers waiting outside."
"You three," I pointed at Peter, Emmett, and Alice. "We're leaving for the airport in ten minutes. If you bicker about these topics again, I swear, I will kick you off the island. I own it, I can do whatever the fuck I want."
I saw Skylar peeking at them from my periphery before looking at me. She craned her neck and put her paws on my forearm.
Alice failed to keep a straight face while gazing at Skylar. She giggled. "Okay, Skylar is too cute. She dials down your disappointed father's look."
Bella chuckled before leaving the suite to wake up Rosalie. Tanya was on the phone while Peter was discussing something with Cynthia. I grabbed the leash from my jacket to attach it to Skylar's harness. Putting Skylar on her feet, I sat on the couch with a heavy sigh. Emmett and Alice settled on either side of me.
I chuckled. "You guys take the middle child stereotypes a little too far every time."
"We're sorry," Alice squeezed my hand. "We can give you four days."
"Four days, sure." Emmett nodded before making a cross over his heart.
"Thanks."
We waited in the reception lobby as everyone arrived within a few minutes. Bella stifled a yawn as she nestled against me. I rubbed her back in a soothing gesture. "Tired?"
"Exhausted."
I gazed down when I felt something drop on my shoes. Skylar was curling against my shoes to sleep. Laughing, I scooped her in my arms. She leaned toward Bella to lick her face before snuggling against me.
"Are you saying good night to mommy, baby?" I cooed and kissed her adorable head.
Bella gasped with a smile. "Wait, I'm mommy?"
"Who else?" I scoffed. "She knows you as mommy. Sky, where's mommy?"
Skylar gazed at Bella for a few seconds and then shut her eyes. I chuckled. "See? My smart baby."
"Aw, I had no idea. This is so cute." Bella gave me a quick kiss. "Why aren't we leaving?"
"Some idiot guest staying at the hotel put it on his social media that we are here. There are photographers outside. We're going from the back exit. Hopefully, it will be safer."
Her gaze turned anxious. "Edward, I'm not uncomfortable when these people take photos."
I stroked her cheek. "I know, baby. I'm so sorry, but we have to leave now. Stay away from Tanya, Peter, and Alice. You'll be fine."
"And you," She whispered sadly. "I hate this."
"Me too, Bella," I suddenly recalled the post-snorkeling trip back to the port. "I have to tell you something."
"What?"
"When we were returning after the snorkeling incident, Kate had somehow allowed access to photographers in the restricted area to take our pictures."
Her face contracted into pure horror. "What?"
"You were asleep at the time and I covered your head," I reassured her. "Nobody can recognize you. I promise. My PR told me that the pictures were bought by some media outlet tonight, they will be in the news soon. No one can see you. Please don't be mad."
Bella nodded as she blinked back her tears. "I don't like it. Maybe people won't see them."
That was highly unlikely, but I could give her hope.
"Of course, love. That is possible," I kissed her cheek. "Don't think about it," I pecked her lips. "I love you."
"I love you more." She smiled and hugged me from the side.
Five minutes later, it was impossible to see the cars from the lights flashing around us. Not only the photographers but even onlookers had gathered to take a picture. This was irritating. Stefan led us to the first car and held the door open. Skylar squirmed in my arms from the noise and peeked her head out of my jacket. She barked at the photographers, making me smile.
"It's okay, Sky," I turned her away from them.
I helped Tanya and Senna settle inside. As Peter settled in the front passenger seat, my eyes raced toward the back, trying to search for Bella. I couldn't see her. Tanya grabbed my jacket to pull me inside. Stefan shut the door after I sat, and Skylar became comfortable. She put her paws against the side to get a better look outside.
We sighed with relief when Stefan drove us away from the prying eyes toward the airport. Our car was the first to arrive at the tarmac, where the pilot and first officer were waiting for us. I greeted them with a polite smile and apologized for the delay. I put Skylar on her feet so she could sniff around the space. I tugged on her leash when she went too far.
The second car arrived, and Alice, Jasper, Emmett, Rosalie, Jack, and Seth stepped out. Jack was cranky but got distracted when he saw Skylar. Bella was in the third car, looking a little anxious as she walked toward me. Her body relaxed when I tightly embraced her.
"Will we always travel in separate cars in public?" Bella gazed at me from under her lashes.
The innocence in her question made my stomach tighten. I touched her rosy cheek. "No, my love. We'll figure something out."
She smiled in response. "Okay."
Sometimes, it scared me how much she trusted my promises. I hope I can fulfill all of them.
Bella began dozing off in her seat an hour into the flight. Others had already started reclining their seats into beds, ready to sleep. Skylar was out like a light in her carrier while Rosalie and Jack were asleep in the bedroom. Alice was seated on the other end of the aisle, working on her laptop.
"Alice, what are you doing?" I whispered.
She turned to me while adjusting her thick black-rimmed glasses. "I need to finalize a few last-minute wedding details. I'm emailing Mom about it. She was texting me earlier that everyone loves the island!"
I chuckled. "That's great."
"You have two things to do once we reach there. Sign a few documents because we're making tiny changes to the courtyard and choose Skylar's floral headpiece. We need to add it to the list with the florist team. Mara has a lot on her plate. She's been working on that island for the last two days and we're behind schedule."
"Okay, we'll do that."
Jasper lifted his head from Alice's side and glared at me. "Can you stop talking? It's late."
I rolled my eyes but looked away. Bella lifted the headrest to snuggle with me.
She stroked my cheek. "What's wrong? You've been restless since the flight took off."
"I'm not used to not working on a flight. I don't know what to do."
"We can talk, sweetheart," She yawned, making me chuckle.
"Hmm, I think we should go to sleep."
"No, I'm fine," Her eyes glanced toward the window-at the engine. Shit. I realized she was scared to sleep because of the private jet incident. I should've been more observant about this.
Standing up, I lifted Bella in my arms. She opened her mouth to yell, but I shushed her. "Everyone's asleep," I whispered. She put her arms around my neck as I carried her past the two cabins. The lights were down, and there were light snores heard from somewhere.
We stopped in front of the bedroom so Bella could open the door. We found Emmett, Rosalie, and Jack fast asleep under the covers on the king-size bed while the full-size bed was empty. Without waking them up, I shut the door with a soft click and deposited Bella on the vacant bed. I took off my shoes, watch, and jacket while Bella did the same.
Once Bella and I cuddled under the sheets, she gave me a long kiss. "I've been a little apprehensive about flights," She admitted in a low voice. "Since the… you know."
"I understand, Bella. But, it won't happen again," I assured her. "Nothing is going to happen to you."
"Hmm, okay," Bella smiled and pecked my lips. "What do you want for Christmas?"
The sudden change of conversation made me chuckle. "I don't know, haven't thought about it. Do you have something in mind?"
"Maybe, but you already have everything," She complained.
"I know you are super-rich after selling your house in Arizona but don't waste that money on buying me an expensive watch or cologne, or something useless," I whispered in a pleading tone.
Bella giggled. "Fine, I won't buy you something thoughtful. Maybe personalized socks? Or a nice dinner plate?"
"That sounds nice. Will the plate have my initials?"
"Let me think about it."
I stroked her hair with a smile. "What do you want for Christmas, baby?"
"I wanted a nice robe and Mom already bought me a Turkish bathrobe for Christmas, so there isn't anything specific I would like."
My gaze turned skeptical. "You wanted a robe for Christmas? It's a good thing I love you because you are so fucking weird sometimes, Bella."
She poked my side. "Robes are a luxury essential. A nice bathrobe can change everything."
"I haven't thought-"
Bella suddenly leaned on her elbow to gaze at me. I could see her smiling in the dark. "I know what I want from you this Christmas," She murmured with excitement evident in her voice.
Her contagious grin made me eager. "What, my love? Tell me."
"I-No, I don't think it's possible."
"Bella, it's me. I can get you to the most impossible things imaginable. What is it?"
She took a deep breath. "You have stayed at my apartment many times, you know it quite well. I always thought something was missing."
My heart almost leaped out of my chest. Did Bella want to move in with me? Fuck yes. We could do that next week and celebrate Christmas together in our home. Skylar would be so excited to have Bella stay with us all the time.
Fuck, she was still talking. I should focus on that. "… the landlord said that it's fine as long as I repaint the wall to the original color before moving out. So what do you think?"
What?
"What?" I frowned.
She huffed. "Were you not listening to me? The spare room in my apartment looks like a warehouse. I wanted to decorate it. Will you help me? We can paint the walls, buy furniture… My parents won't have to stay over at Jake's place every time they are in Seattle."
Oh great. Bella wanted to expand her stay in that little apartment by decorating it.
"Sure, we can do that," I murmured and kissed her cheek.
"You sound sad, what happened?"
"I thought you wanted to move in with me."
Bella gasped lightly. "Edward sweetheart, I see us living together, of course. But, not right away. I like having my space, for now, it has been ages since I experienced that."
"I know. I just wanted to live with you and call that place our home," I murmured as I pulled her onto my chest.
"You are my home, Edward," She smiled.
"Okay, I can't argue when you say something so sweet and corny." I kissed her cheek.
Her hands held onto me in a tight hold. "I love you too."
There was a throat clear from the bed, and we froze. It was Emmett. "Stop whispering, shut the fuck up, and let me sleep!"
Bella and I shared a quick kiss before falling asleep.
We reached the island around a quarter past ten in the morning. A crew of six islanders was waiting for us at the docks as the three motorboats parked. The staffers welcomed us with flower garlands and a classic caipirinha cocktail. Skylar quickly began sniffing around the new surface while looking skeptical at the crowded space.
I spoke to one of the members in Portuguese, asking her about Beatriz, the island's manager. She informed me that Bea was on her way.
Emmett clinked his glass while juggling a fast asleep Jack in his arms. "Más drink, por favor."
"That's Spanish." I corrected him.
"Più al-"
"No." I shook my head.
He groaned, but the staffer smiled at my brother. "We will get you a refill, Mr. Cullen."
"Obrigado," Emmett offered me a sarcastic smile. "That's correct, right? Smartass."
I laughed. "Sure."
"Mangia merde e morte!" He snapped before looking away.
Bella tugged on my hand. "That sounded Italian."
"It was," I glanced to my right when I saw Beatriz, the manager walking in my direction. "He told me 'Eat shit and die'."
Beatriz hugged me tight, and I kissed her cheek before stepping back. She offered me a joyful smile. "Welcome, welcome, Edward! It's so good to see you!"
"Hi, Bea. Everything looks great."
Bea jumped a little when Skylar scratched against her shoes. I lifted the puppy in my arms with an apologetic smile. "Sorry about that. This is Skylar," I pulled Bella to my side. "This is my Bella. Love, this is Beatriz. She is the manager of the island."
Bella smiled at her and shook her head. "Hello, it's nice to meet you. This place is magical."
"Thank you, Bella. We hope you have a wonderful celebration here."
I introduced Bea to everyone, ensuring she would remember to cater to their requirements. She had a starstruck look in her eye, gazing at Tanya. We finally turned to Alice and Jasper.
"And this is the couple soon-to-be-married. Alice and Jasper."
Bea shook their hands. "Congratulations on your wedding celebrations! It's such a pleasure to meet you. We have a bit of a surprise planned for the happy couple if you could just follow me. Your luggage will be safely settled in your assigned residency."
Alice squealed with joy. "Surprise? Ooh, I'm excited!"
Jasper tilted his head toward me. "What is the surprise?" He muttered.
I chuckled. "There is an overwater spa surrounded by sea. I think they have planned a couple's massage and brunch. It'll be fine."
"Oh, great. I could use a massage."
Beatriz smiled at them before nodding at one of the staffers. "Please, follow Alana."
Once they left, she smiled at the rest of us. "Let me take a moment to officially welcome you to the Elisheba Isles. As we have been introduced, I am Beatriz. Please call me Bea. Before we begin discovering the island, our staff would like to take you to the assigned accommodation. We consulted with Edward and Mrs. Cullen while the bungalows were allotted, so we can ensure they can suit every requirement. There will be one islander per bungalow at your service, please do not hesitate to ask for anything. Do contact me if there is something I can help you with."
"The islanders at your bungalows can also give you a guided tour if you want, please do inquire about the various activities offered by us. I hope you have an unforgettable stay as we all celebrate Alice and Jasper's wedding. I have to run now, the wedding management team needs me!" She grinned and offered a wave. "Edward, see me once you're free!" Bea called out as she left.
"Aw, she was so sweet," Rosalie gushed at her retreating form. "Alright, mommy needs some rest before Jack wakes up."
Emmett chuckled. "Damn right. Also, everyone listen up! Bea missed out on something very important. In your bungalows, you will also be served with an assortment of NDAs, please do not hesitate to sign them."
"NDAs?" Vanessa wrinkled her nose. "For the wedding?"
"Yes, cupcake. That will come in handy when this one," Emmett subtly tilted his head in my direction. "Gets into a fight with Grandpa Anthony when Alice and Jasper are reciting their vows."
Some of them laughed, but I glowered at Emmett. "Or when I throw you off a cliff, nobody can testify against me."
A group of six people arrived to take everyone to their assigned bungalows. Ness skipped over to me with a pout. She slowly plucked Skylar out of my arms. "Can I keep her for the next four days?" She kissed Skylar's head multiple times. "Such a cute baby."
"Of course not. Take Sky with you, for now. I'll come to get her in some time. I think you are in a two-bedroom bungalow with one of Jasper's cousins. She's coming tomorrow. Keep the spare bedroom shut, don't let Skylar wander off."
Ness glanced at Seth before looking at me. "Or, Seth can be with us. He's very cool! And our age. Everyone's so old," She rolled her eyes.
I laughed. "Fine, I'll let Bea know. Seth, will it be alright if you share a bungalow with Vanessa and Luna?"
"Sure! That sounds fun!" He high-fived Luna. So, they did get along well.
"Take care of my little Skylar." I kissed her head before they walked away with one of the staffers.
Bella was patiently waiting for me, staring at the mountains with a serene smile. I reached her, and she opened her chocolate brown eyes to gaze at me. Her arms wound around my neck with a sigh.
"Where is our bungalow, Mr. Cullen? I can't wait to see it! Are we sharing with someone? Alice said that Jasper has a lot of cousins."
I kissed the top of her head. "Hmm, we are sharing with his cousins from New Jersey. I have to warn you, they are a bit nosy."
"That's okay, they're family, right?"
"Yeah and one of the cousins watches the Real Housewives show all the time and taps her foot. The other one chews very loudly. We will probably hear it while we're in the shower."
She threw me a skeptical look. "Okay, now I'm having second thoughts."
That made me laugh. "I'm just messing with you, baby. We're staying in the owner's residency. It's a private home at the tallest peak of the island."
Her mouth fell open. "Really? Let's go! I want to see it!"
"This is going to be a long walk." I interlaced our hands as we walked toward our home for the next four days. "I have arranged for Skylar's stay in the guest bedroom; she'll like it."
She pointed toward the other residences. "Are those bungalows?"
"No, love. They are the six limited private residences. We decided to reserve them for my parents, Jasper's parents, the grandparents, and Alice and Jasper."
"Ooh, how lovely. And look, there are bikes parked at different spots. We should ride bikes later."
"We'll take a tour of the island, we have four days. Skylar loves hiking, maybe we can go tomorrow."
"Hmm, I would like that," She kissed my cheek. "It must be expensive to maintain this island, Edward. I know you are rich but isn't it a little taxing?"
"That's a great observation, Bella. Well, there has been a lot of interest in the island since I bought it. I'm going to use that to my advantage. Once the wedding wraps up, we're turning it into a resort. There is an open land where I have plans to build affordable accommodation options for people of the mid-income level. The staffers will see a hike in their salaries and I will be donating the profits to my non-profit. What do you think?"
Bella smiled at me. "I think you are one of the smartest people I know. Do we have a staff member waiting for us in the residency?"
"No, not right now. It's going to be just us."
We took a ten-minute hike, walking past the stores, residencies, and bungalows to reach our destination. A wooden staircase led us to our home for the long week.
Bella laughed as I lifted her in my arms. She connected our lips for a gentle kiss as I carefully carried her up the stairs. I opened the entrance door without breaking our kiss and led her inside.
Bella pulled back; her intense look stirred my erection. "I think I need a shower. Join me?"
I chuckled. "Bella, the day I say no to that question," I casually gazed toward the living room, and my eyes widened to see two figures watching us.
"Fuck!"
Dropping Bella to her feet, I steadied her in my arms. She frowned at me before following my eyes. "Oh my god, that's your-"
"Nonna, Grandpa! What the fuck are you doing here?!" I yelled incredulously.
Grandpa Victor frowned thoughtfully. "What? This isn't our place?" Then he laughed. "I'm just kidding. We saw the boats coming to the island and asked Bento to drive us in the cart. Do you know what I realized here? My Portuguese has become a bit rusty."
Nonna slapped his arm. "Cosa stai dicendo? It's good. Don't underestimate yourself! Edward, we have been waiting to see you! And this must be Bella! E 'cosi' bella!"
"No! You are not getting introduced to Bella. What are you doing here?" I demanded. "This is so inappropriate!" Bella was a deep shade of red, religiously staring at her feet. "Love, I'm so sorry about this."
She nestled against me. "It's fine."
"We were here to invite you for the family dinner tonight. 07:00 PM, don't be late." Grandpa offered a grin.
"This invitation could've been a text message. You didn't have to come in here and invade our privacy."
Nonna rolled her eyes. "Don't be so overdramatic, Carino. What's so wrong about wanting to see our favorite grandchild?"
"Okay, first of all, stop calling me your favorite grandchild. Vanessa had a meltdown the last time you said that in front of her."
"But, it's true!" She argued, earning a chuckle from Bella. "See? Bella knows it already. Come on now, officially introduce us."
With great reluctance, I took Bella toward the couch where my grandparents were seated. They stood up as I introduced them. "Bella, these weirdos are my grandparents, Victor and Ginevra. Grandpa and Nonna, this is my Bella."
"Bella, so magnifica!" Nonna enveloped her in a hug.
"We've been waiting for ages to meet you, darling," Grandpa Victor kissed her cheek.
My Bella was flattered and overwhelmed with their warm welcome. "It's so lovely to finally meet you, Mr. and Mrs. Platt. Edward has told me wonderful things about you."
"I'm sure he has," Nonna patted my cheek before pulling me toward her. I tightly hugged her and felt comforted in her warm and familiar embrace. "Lei sarà tua moglie," She said before pulling back. Her words made my heart happy. God, I missed her so much.
"What was that?" Bella asked with a curious smile.
"Just talking about the place," I lied, but Nonna laughed.
"Oh, little liar. It's okay, Bella. It was meant for Edward. You will know when the time comes," She changed the topic. "How do you like the island? We told all our friends that Carino bought an island. They didn't believe us until we sent pictures."
"Stop showing off," I whispered. "Do you need some help for dinner tonight? I can ask a few chefs to help you with the-"
Nonna cut me off with an admonishing look. "There will be no fancy chefs involved with making the dinner tonight. Just the family. Edward, you should come by an hour early. We're going to tell Emmett the same. You both have worked as bartenders, right? You need to make drinks that will go well with every course."
I rolled my eyes. "We have mixology diplomas from the-"
"It's the same thing. We are going to meet our other grandkids now. Have fun! See you for dinner tonight!" She blew us a kiss as they walked toward the entrance. "Vic, call Bento. He needs to get the cart here."
Grandpa informed their staffer before smiling at us. "So Bella, were you happy when you found out the name of the island?"
My eyes widened in shock. Bella looked confused. "I don't understand."
I glared at him. "I think it will take you some time to reach the ground. You should leave now."
He smiled apologetically. "Oh, you hadn't told her. Sorry, son. Anyway, have a great time."
My grandparents complained about their knees as they climbed down the stairs. Bento arrived to take them away to Emmett's place. Bella and I stood on the porch and waved as they left.
"Edward sweetheart, what was Mr. Platt talking about?"
"Would you like a tour or a shower first?" I asked once we were back inside.
"No, answer my question."
I ran a hand through my hair with a sigh. "Uh, do you remember the name of the island? Beatriz said it while she welcomed everyone."
"Elisheba Isles?"
"Yeah," I drew her closer and touched my forehead to hers. "Um, it's a Hebrew name from the Bible."
"It's a sweet name, why do you look so nervous?"
"Well, the Italian and Spanish version of that name is Isabella. That's your name," I said stupidly as if she didn't know her name. "I named the island after you."
Bella looked shocked as she stared at me. Her brown eyes were wide as saucers with a slightly agape mouth. I brushed the stray hair away from her face, waiting to see her reaction.
"Say something. Are you happy? Sad? Angry?"
"Why would I be angry?" Bella whispered as tears gathered in my eyes. "You named this place after me? That's the sweetest thing anybody can do for someone. Oh, Edward, I love you so much. I hope you know that. I can't name islands after you, but if I could, I would do that."
My heart melted hearing her words. "Bella, these are all things; they might lose their value over time. But what we have is more precious to me than anything else." She nodded, and I wiped away the tear that trickled down her cheek. "How about a tour of our place?"
Bella blushed as she nodded at me. "I would like that."
I interlaced our hands as we stepped onto the living room balcony that overlooked the back of the island, featuring the vast beach. We checked the Chef's kitchen, dining area, Family Den, and study. The guest room had a cushioned sleep basket, toys, and a pee pad for Skylar.
The Master Bedroom was breathtaking. It was big, airy, and refreshing. The room was partially covered in floor-to-ceiling windows, offering views of the dense forest. There was a glass partition on the right side with an ensuite indoor swimming pool ten steps away from the bed.
"It's like we're outdoors," Bella murmured, staring at the forest with starstruck eyes.
When we entered the bathroom, she gasped in surprise. I hadn't seen the bathroom before, but it also took my breath away. Strolling down the dim-lit hallway, we found ourselves standing outdoors. The outdoor bathroom was shrouded by mature trees with a hint of sunlight coming from a distance. I could see a waterfall and only trees around me. The bathroom had a freestanding bathtub and a rain showerhead.
Bella stared everywhere with an incredulous look. "Oh my god, this is, without a doubt, the most beautiful house I have ever seen."
I grabbed the zip of her jacket to pull her flush against me. "I remember discussing a shower."
"I don't know what you're talking about," She fluttered her lashes. I looked her in the eye as I turned on the rain showerhead that instantly soaked us from head to toe.
"What about now?"
She wrapped her arms around my neck and stretched on her toes to kiss me. "Not sure yet. Maybe after you help me get rid of the clothes."
I smirked at her. "That I can do."
Bella and I enjoyed our morning having a late brunch and spending uninterrupted time with each other. I made her dance in the living room as we stared at the view in front of us.
Bea called me around one, reminding me to drop by her office when I would be free.
"If you are off to help with the wedding planning, I'm hitting the beach with my book," Bella said as she stripped out her clothes. I watched her wear a tight one-piece halter neck swimsuit with a plunging neckline and open back. Fuck, she looked so sexy. Bella put a bunch of shit on her face. "A little help?" She tossed her sunscreen lotion in my direction. I eagerly helped Bella cover every inch of her body with the cream.
I reluctantly got dressed in a t-shirt and swimming trunks. After texting Seth to bring Skylar to the courtyard, I began packing a bag for her.
"What are you doing, sweetheart?" Bella asked curiously.
"Just some beach stuff I picked up for Skylar. A sun protector spray, beach towel, paw balm stick, wipes, and a few treats. Should I grab her shoes?" I muttered to myself but changed my mind. "No, the beach isn't too hot. She'll be fine."
Bella walked over to kiss my cheek. "You're so cute, Edward."
My phone buzzed with a text from Alice, reminding me to select Skylar's floral headpiece. Fuck. "Baby, you'll have to come with me to the florist. We need to choose a headpiece for Skylar."
"Aw, I can't wait!" She wrapped a sarong around her waist and wore a hat. "Let's go."
As soon as Skylar found us walking toward her, she eagerly barked in our direction. Bella walked ahead of me to scoop the puppy in her arms. Skylar nuzzled Bella's neck before reaching for the hat. Bella laughed. "No, baby. Don't do that."
"Edward! Bella!" Mom squealed as she made her way toward us.
I gave her a quick hug and kissed her cheeks. "Hey, Ma. How do you like the place?"
"It's superb! We're having so much fun! Your father hasn't left his bed all day. It's his first vacation in years!" She exclaimed before greeting Bella.
Seth informed me that Skylar was done with her lunch and bathroom break before leaving. Skylar jumped into my arms, and I took her straight to the gazebo covered in flower arrangements.
"Sit here, Skylar," I said while putting her on the coffee table. She patiently sat in front of me, quietly staring at my movements. "We're going to protect you from the heat, my love. Nothing should happen to my pretty girl, right?"
I sprayed the sun protection mist on her nose, and she tried to sniff the liquid but looked confused. I patted my lap, and Skylar jumped toward me. I laid her on the back before cleaning her paws with a wipe. I rolled the balm on her paws so the hot surfaces wouldn't irritate her while walking.
"Don't move for five minutes," I informed her as she held the paws in the air.
Mom and Mara walked in our direction with excited grins. Bella put three floral headpieces on the table as she took a photo of us. Mara stepped forward to lean down and hug me. "Edward darling, I haven't seen you since you were in high school! Look at you, so handsome!"
I smiled. "It's nice to see you after so long, Mara."
Mara had been Mom's florist on retainer for over two decades now. I had known her since I was a child. While Mara's employees were usually present at other events, she took time off to handle the floral decorations for Alice's wedding.
"Is this the courtyard?" I heard Bella ask Mom.
"Yeah, this is where we'll be taking the guests after the wedding rehearsal for the big surprise."
"Jasper is going to lose his mind, he was so bummed when nobody agreed to go to the casino with him," Bella laughed.
"I hope he likes it. We took help from his best friends to know what he likes," Mom eyed me with a smile.
"He'll love it, don't worry," I reassured my mother as I put Skylar on her feet again. She checked her paws to see if something was different. She licked my face before lunging for the headpieces.
"Bella, come here!"
Bella plucked Skylar out of my arms so I could put the headpieces on my lap. Out of my periphery, I saw a young girl recording me on the phone. I opened my mouth to remark, but Mara intervened.
"Edward, it's for our social media pages. We're giving glimpses into Alice's wedding prep. It increases page traffic." She explained. I owned an advertising company as if I didn't know what she was trying to do.
I glanced at Mom, who nodded at me. Fine. I looked at the girl with a stern look. "Don't let Bella's face come into any videos," I pointed to my Bella. "If I see even a glimpse of her on your page, you will be on the next flight to LA."
She gulped nervously. "Yes, Mr. Cullen."
I offered her a gentle smile, and she relaxed. "Thanks."
"Mara, what do you want me to do?"
"Just try on the floral headpieces and choose one. We'll add some music and post it."
I chuckled. "Sure."
Bella put Skylar on the table, and I fed my little girl a treat. She looked around as I put the first headpiece on her. It was a beautiful halo made from sunflowers and orchids with a pale blue ribbon. It was nice. Skylar tilted her head, attempting to get a look at it.
I gazed at Bella, but she shook her head. "Her face is small, and the sunflowers are overshadowing everything else. I like that the ribbon is pale blue," She touched the ribbon. "Just like the bridesmaid dresses."
Mara grinned at her. "That was the plan, Bella. Plus, you're right about the sunflowers. Skylar looked bigger in Esme's picture of her, I couldn't get a proper estimate. Try the second one."
The second headpiece was a gorgeous ring of pink roses and white orchids with a pale blue ribbon and a few decorative leaves. I fished out my phone to take a picture of Skylar, and she straightened her pose for the photo, making everyone laugh.
"I know, Sky. You love taking pictures," I stroked her pretty face. "I love this one. It's delicate and perfect. Bella, what do you think?"
Bella smiled in response. "This one is beautiful. It frames her face but doesn't steal a lot of focus."
"Yeah, the third one is too loud," I noted, staring at the orange and blue design. "Mara, let's final this one." I let out a loud sigh. "If we're done here, I have some work with Beatriz. Sky, who do you want to go with? Mommy or daddy?"
Skylar shook her head as she reached for Bella, who put her headpiece away. Bella picked Skylar and kissed her face. "We'll have a girl's day at the beach, sweetie. Let's go."
I passed the bag to Bella, and she attached Skylar to her leash before they walked away from me. I left for Bea's office soon after. I inquired about the changes Mom and Mara were planning to make to the courtyard for tomorrow night. I spent more than thirty minutes in different paperwork, signing permits and requesting forms.
"Collect the NDAs from everyone," I informed Bea. "Keep two people specifically to bring them here and cross-check with the wedding guest list."
Bea smiled. "Of course. Each staffer has a copy of the guest list at all times. Don't worry about anything."
"I know I sound like a broken record but don't forget to collect the phones before each event. You can work with Stefan on this. If the guests get angry, just tell them that there are photographers taking pictures of everything, and they won't miss a thing. If they are being too difficult, bring them to me. I don't want Jasper and Alice bothered by such stupid shit."
"Yes, boss. Will do."
"If we're done here, I would like to join my family on the beach."
When I went to the beach, I found Emmett and Jack paddle boarding in the far distance with Rosalie fast asleep under the beach tent cabana. While Alec and his boyfriend were off to surf, Tanya and Senna took pictures. My lips curled into a grin when I spotted Bella making a castle with Skylar holding a bucket handle in her mouth.
I settled next to Bella, and Skylar jumped on me. "Hello, ladies. How is it going?"
"We're making a castle! Jack left his stuff lying around so we thought, let's give it a try."
"Hmm, I can help. Sky, dig here," I pointed to a spot, and Skylar enthusiastically dug until I stopped her. "Good girl." She wagged her tail as I stroked her adorable face.
Bella and I shared beach stories from childhood as we made the castle with Skylar's help. Bella had been on a beach vacation only once while she was young and spent her time in the La Push beach community in Forks. I wondered how fun it was to spend time on the beach in windy, overcast weather. Maybe we could travel in the coming months since Tanya and Peter live there too. She was in California while her parents were separated but never had a chance to be a tourist in the state.
Just as we were done with the castle, Jack and Emmett arrived with big grins. Jack gasped, jumping with excitement as he stared at our finished creation.
"So cool!"
Bella passed him the tiny pirate flag. "Do you want to put it on top?"
"Yes!"
Vanessa arrived and took Skylar from me again, making me scowl at her. Bella and I settled on the second cabana bed with Jack following us. Jack distracted me as he detailed his paddle boarding experience with Emmett. Bella put her head on my knee as she resumed reading her novel. Jack protested when Emmett arrived to take him for his afternoon nap. He clung to me, grabbing onto my t-shirt so he wouldn't have to leave.
"Jack, even Aunt Bella and I are going to take Skylar for her nap now. Everyone will leave soon." I reassured him. He reluctantly went to his father, and they left.
I took a quick dip in the ocean, savoring the peace around me. This place was going to get crowded with more than eighty people tomorrow. I wondered how difficult it would be to avoid the stares when people saw me with Bella. While the ironclad NDA would ensure that nobody could disclose any information about my family, it was still a bit daunting. Most of all, I wanted Bella to have an unforgettable time here. She was so excited about the wedding celebrations, as was everyone.
Bella joined me a while later, and we swam deeper into the water. I let Bella decide her comfort level with swimming since she underwent the snorkeling incident two days ago.
"We should take Skylar back," Bella whispered. "You have to go to your grandparent's place to make the drinks in some time."
I groaned. "I know-" My words caught in my throat when a strong force pushed my head deep into the ocean.
I came up gasping for air and found Jasper mid-laugh. When his eyes were closed, I dipped his face into the water and held him in the same position for a few seconds until he punched my leg.
Alice sighed loudly beside Bella. "This could go on for a while."
Nonna Ginevra and Grandpa Victor were waiting for me when I arrived at their residency. Through the French doors of the living room, they had arranged a long dining table on the beach, decorated with candle stands and floral arrangements. Nonna grabbed me by the jacket and led me straight to the open bar. She handed me the menu for the night, so I could start making the drinks. A few minutes later, Emmett was escorted similarly, and he sighed.
"Bossy little thing, isn't she?" Emmett laughed. "So, what are we making?"
Emmett and I began experimenting with drinks and finalized a drinks menu with unique cocktails for each course. Once the bartender arrived, we informed him of the requirements for the evening. Emmett and I grabbed beers as we sat on the lounges, waiting for everyone to start coming.
"Edward! Emmett!" I heard Aunt Carmen call us.
I instantly jumped to my feet to reach her and Uncle Eleazar. I gave them a tight hug. Aunt Carmen touched my cheek with a sigh. "We haven't seen you all day, sweetheart. I missed you so much!" She gave me another hug, and I kissed her cheek.
"I missed you too, Mamma. Is your place good? Do you like it?" I asked while releasing her.
Uncle Eleazar nodded. "It's amazing. Hey, Emmett," He hugged my brother with a pat on the back.
Aunt Carmen looked around. "Where are your other halves?"
Emmett rolled his eyes. "We came early because Nonna wanted us to make drinks."
They laughed in response. "Makes sense."
Aunt Carmen looped her arm through mine with a gentle smile as she led me away. "Edward, isn't your grandfather coming?"
My stomach twisted into uneasy knots. I shrugged. "He's coming tomorrow, I think."
"Be nice to Anthony for the next few days, Tesoro," She reminded me. "We're here to celebrate Alice and Jasper. Don't give people a chance to gossip about anything."
"I have no problem with Grandpa Anthony, Mamma. We got along quite well. I just don't like the way he treats Bella or talks about her. She is an important part of my life, I want to protect her. When someone tells me that she is wrong for me and wants me to leave her, of course, I'm going to get mad."
"I know, honey. That would infuriate anyone. Have minimum interactions with him, if it helps." Aunt Carmen suggested with a grin.
"Sure, I can do that."
Bella arrived alongside Rosalie and Jack, looking like an angel in a little white dress. I watched her greet my parents with a warm smile and chat with them. She was so precious. If Grandpa Anthony got to know her, he would change his mind.
"Oh, Bella's here! She hasn't met your uncle yet, bring her here." Aunt Carmen pushed me toward the seating area.
Bella was laughing about something when her chocolate brown eyes met mine. Her cheeks flushed with an alluring blush as I snaked my arm around her waist. The tips of my finger traced the belt of her skirt before caressing her open back. Fuck, my girl was so hot.
Dad gave me a quick hug and patted my head. "Great place, Son. I'm so proud. I love this vacation."
I laughed. "I'm glad to hear that, Dad. Have fun and maybe help Mom with the guest list."
Mom smiled. "Thank you for saying that!"
"Where's Skylar?" Bella asked, looking around for her.
"Skylar is with Seth. They are hanging out with Peter tonight."
She put her hand on my chest and kissed my cheek. "That's nice."
"Come on, you need to meet a few people," I led her toward Aunt Carmen and Uncle Eleazar.
Since Bella had met my aunt during their amusement park trip to Kentucky, they knew each other. I introduced her to Uncle Eleazar before taking her to meet Jasper's parents, Henry and Rebecca. They were the nicest people I know. Bella was asking them about knowing me since I was ten.
"… moved to Chicago with my new job," Bec said and continued. "Jasper was throwing a fit since he had a ton of friends in Texas but he became friends with Edward on the first day of his school. They have been inseparable ever since. Jasper met Alice during one summer and then here we are, twelve odd years later."
"I was the matchmaker," I explained with an easy smile.
Jasper's mother rolled her eyes. "Sure, honey. Emmett punched my son in the face when he found out and you threw him in the lake!"
"It was a clean lake," I defended, making her laugh.
"Well, I'm glad you're past that now."
Nonna clinked her glass, drawing everyone's attention. "Dinner will be served in two minutes. Everyone, settle down."
Grandpa Victor and Nonna Ginevra happily escorted everyone to their assigned seats with a grin.
Bella and I were seated in the center across from Jasper and Alice. My parents were sitting next to me; Mom complained about her parents going overboard with this dinner. She was right, they were too old for this, but my grandparents loved throwing dinner parties.
We were served a four-course Italian feast with drinks customized by Emmett and me. Bella couldn't stop gushing about dinner, saying it was the best Italian food she had ever had. The meals were scrumptious, just like everything my grandmother made. It took me back to my summers in Italy, sitting on the terrace, watching the sea, and enjoying great food.
"I'm full, but I know I'll regret it if I don't eat this," Bella murmured, staring at the Italian hazelnut and chocolate torte.
I laughed. "Take a few bites from my slice. We'll take yours home and eat it for breakfast tomorrow. You love eating dessert for breakfast."
She kissed my cheek. "I knew I loved you for a reason."
Bella shivered when the night's cool breeze wafted around the dinner table. I shrugged out of my jacket before wrapping it around her. She put her head on my shoulder, and I kissed her hair. Grandpa Victor made a sweet toast for Jasper and Alice, which made my sister tear up.
Emmett clinked his glass, drawing everyone's attention. He smiled apologetically at Alice and Jasper. "I know it's your night but, let's steal focus away from you for a few minutes. Since our family is gathered here tonight, Jack would like to say something."
"Jack?" Alice smiled curiously at the little boy.
Jack giggled as all eyes were focused on him. He gazed at Rosalie, who nodded at him with a smile. "Mommy and daddy say I'm gonna be a big brother!"
Mom jumped to her feet in shock, almost knocking over her wine glass, but I caught it beforehand. "Oh my god! I'm going to be a grandma again? Oh my god!"
The congratulations floated for Rosalie and Emmett as Mom rushed over to hug them tight. Alice was squealing in her seat, happy about her plans for the baby.
"How long have you known?" Alice demanded. "Why didn't you tell us?"
Rosalie sighed. "We wanted to wait until the first trimester had passed. My parents know since we were at their house when the results arrived. And Edward knew, that's it."
I felt the focus shift to me as I drank my wine. Emmett looked at me with wide eyes. "What? Rose, you didn't tell me he knew!"
"He figured it out. Smug smartass," Rosalie muttered when Jack wasn't looking.
I smirked at her. "Enough about how observant I am. When are you due?"
"Last week of June."
Everyone gathered on the beach to chat and catch up with each other. Rosalie and Emmett left early to put Jack to bed. Bella and I spent most of our time with Aunt Carmen and Uncle Eleazar. Nonna came to us with a satisfied grin when everything was done.
"It was an amazing party, Nonna." I kissed her head. "Thank you so much for arranging it."
"I'm glad to hear that, Edward."
A familiar voice came from the doorway, making everyone turn. "What? Dinner is over already? Damn it!"
My grandfather, Anthony Cullen, strolled toward the beach with a curious smile. Grandpa Victor was the first to greet him with an awkward hug.
"Oh dio," Nonna murmured before plastering a smile and walking toward him. "Anthony! Oh, it's been ages! Why are you so late?"
"She's good," Uncle Eleazar said under his breath.
Bella put her arm around me reassuringly, and I planted a gentle kiss on her forehead. My grandfather's presence made me believe that the happy time was over. Grandpa Anthony went straight to Alice and Jasper, greeting them with a warm smile. Alice embraced him with an easy smile, unaware of what a horrible human being he was. Aunt Carmen tried to distract me as she asked about our trip to the Bahamas.
"It was amazing!" Bella gushed. "I don't know how Edward planned it but both parties arrived on the yacht minutes after each other. Edward sweetheart, how did you execute it?"
I played with a strand of her hair, focusing on her beautiful face. "I planned it with the manager of the yacht. Well, Alice asked me if there was a way to have everyone together for a trip before the wedding-You know what? I can't do this. I don't want to talk to him. Not tonight. Bella, I don't feel good. Can we leave?"
"But-"
"Please?" I whispered, trying to distract her with my piercing stare.
She nodded. "Okay. Let's say goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Platt."
While Grandpa Anthony was busy talking to Jasper's parents, we wished my grandparents goodnight before returning to their villa and stepping out. Bella seemed less pleased with our abrupt exit, but I didn't care. There was no way she was spending more than five minutes around him. I didn't want to tell Bella that Pops didn't want me to date her. It was hard for her to digest that Riley was trying to keep her apart. If she knew someone from my family wanted to do the same, it would break her heart.
We found Seth and Skylar seated in the courtyard with Tanya and Peter. Skylar came running to us with a happy yelp. I picked her up in my arms and kissed her head. "Hello, Sky."
"Em and Rose dropped by to say they're having a baby, isn't that great?" Tanya smiled.
Bella nodded. "Yes, so exciting!"
Peter studied us for a moment. "So your quick exit from the family dinner is directly proportional to the arrival of Anthony Cullen, am I right?"
I sighed. "Yes, that's correct."
Bella and I settled by them and drank beer while Peter detailed his upcoming schedule for the coming year. Bella seemed interested in the locations as she was trying to figure out some Easter eggs for his show.
"I can just tell you what happens in the coming season," Peter said quickly, but she glared at him.
"No! I'm going to binge-watch it with Angela! I forced her to watch it and she's now a bigger fan than I am." She laughed. "The new season is coming in March, right? Why haven't they released the trailer yet?!"
"I don't know. They let me know twelve hours before the release and sent it to me. Then I upload it on my social media accounts."
"Oh, that's interesting."
"We might just do it in the coming days. My accounts have a lot of traffic right now because of this wedding."
Tanya agreed. "That's true. People get excited about the smallest detail of Alice and Jasper's wedding. The impact of the Cullens, they should teach this in marketing classes." She joked.
I rolled my eyes at them. "Funny." Skylar gazed at me with tired eyes, and I stroked her adorable face. "Love, we should go. Skylar is sleepy."
"Okay, let's go. Come here, baby," Bella lifted Skylar in her arms. "Let's get you in bed. Good night, guys."
"Good night. Do you have something in mind for tomorrow?" Peter asked curiously. "Should we go kayaking?"
I shrugged. "Sure, sounds fun. Maybe we can see the neighboring islands. They're pretty great as well."
After an early start to the day, the next morning, Bella and I followed through with our plan to go hiking with Skylar. The journey was exhausting, but Skylar had more fun than we expected. She stopped at intervals to try and eat the rubber soles on her paws.
"Sky, you can't eat that," I tugged on the leash. "Come on."
Bella laughed while staring at her and took a picture of us on the Polaroid camera. "Aw, you look so cute in this."
"So, you forgot to bring your sunglasses but packed that camera."
She kissed my cheek before gazing at the puppy. "Skylar, look something is up there," She pointed to the peak. "Let's go! Maybe mommy can give you a treat!"
Skylar looked up when the word 'treat' was mentioned, and her eyes gazed at the peak. She barked with renewed energy before leaping towards the path. My eyes widened, and I jogged after her, trying to keep a steady hold on the leash. I heard Bella laughing behind me as she followed us. As promised, Bella fed her two treats once we reached the top.
My lips curled into a smile staring at the panoramic view in front of us. We could see the entire island from here. Our villa was visible, even the courtyard where florists were preparing for tomorrow's events. If I squinted, even the port of Rio caught my eye. I noticed a few boats making their way toward the island. The first group of wedding guests was arriving.
Bella let out a deep sigh as she settled on a boulder. She undid her ponytail before tying her hair into a messy bun. I tugged on a strand of loose hair. Her head leaned into my waist, and she closed her eyes. It was a difficult morning for Bella.
"I'm sorry about the photos, baby. Nobody will care about the articles by next week," I reassured her.
She let out a humorless chuckle. "It's easy for you to say, Edward. You don't have to deal with people and colleagues. You command a conversation, nobody talks to you unless you want to. It's not your fault, you have the liberty to do that. I don't. I'm just one of the thousands of people who work for you," Bella smiled at me. "Don't worry, I'll get over it. It's a bit daunting because I saw it two hours ago. It'll pass."
I kissed the back of her hand. "I love you."
"I know," Her chocolate brown eyes met mine with underlying emotion. "I know you do. I love you more. You are worth all the trouble."
My eyes softened. "I am?"
"Absolutely," Bella rose to her feet and kissed me gently. "Where am I going to find such a handsome man for myself?"
"Is that all I am to you? An eye candy?" I asked dramatically.
"Why do you think we are dating?" She shrugged. "It's just money and looks," Her hand stroked my cheek. "Why would I be with a man who once wrote and illustrated a Looney Tunes fanfiction at six years of age?"
My smile disappeared. "Okay, I regret telling you that."
She burst out laughing. "Sweetheart, it was a good story!"
I ignored her and gazed at Skylar. "Let's go, Sky. We're going to leave mommy here."
Knowing Skylar would tire from walking for too long, I bought a dog carrier backpack. After she drank some water, I helped her hop into the bag. Once I strapped it, I felt Skylar move around before poking her head from the top.
I began descending as Skylar barked toward Bella, inviting her to join us. Bella giggled as she followed us at her pace. I slowed down so she could reach us. Her hand interlaced with mine as we headed back to the street.
Skylar was barking at random birds and making relaxing sounds as she enjoyed her spot in the bag.
"Are you hungry?" I asked Bella. "I saw a few boats coming toward the island, it'll get crowded. We should have breakfast."
"Sure! We're going kayaking, right? Alice is taking me to the spa post-lunch."
"Yeah, kayaking. Should be fun."
Bella and I strolled toward the central locale, where restaurants served breakfast. Skylar began squirming and barking inside the carrier, so I put her back on her feet again. I noticed Bea escorting a group of guests toward the bungalows. I recognized Aunt Becky, Dad's cousin, from the crowd. She gasped, loud enough to grab everyone's attention.
"Edward, oh my god! I haven't seen you in ages!" She began walking toward me with a big grin.
Bella touched my arm. "I'll go ahead and save us a table."
"Sure, baby. Thanks."
Skylar barked as Aunt Becky squeezed me in her arms. I smiled before taking a step back. "Aunt Becky, it's so good to see you. You look well."
"So do you," Her eyes fell on my outfit. "Going to the gym? And who do we have here?"
"This is Skylar. We just came from a hike. You must be tired from the long flight. Bea will take you to your bungalow," I said with a polite smile.
"Of course! I've been meaning to call Carlisle and get your number for ages now. It's a good thing I'm here. You know your cousin Ronnie just graduated college…." Her voice trailed off as my eyes looked past her toward Bella. One minute she was walking alone, and in the other instance, Grandpa Anthony was next to her. My stomach dropped. Fuck.
"… what do you think?" I returned my focus to Aunt Becky's excited face. What the fuck was she talking about?
"How can I help you?" I said randomly, which worked.
"Well, he did graduate in marketing. I'm not asking you to get him a big-time job, an interview would be fine." She turned to wave at her son standing with the crowd. "Ronnie, come here!"
Oh, a job for her son.
Ronnie looked ten shades embarrassed and nervous as he walked toward me. "H-Hey, Edward."
I shook hands with Ronnie. "Hello, Ronnie. Lovely to meet you. You were quite young when I saw you at Emmett's wedding. I'll have my assistant look for you today and take your details, alright?" My eyes raced toward Bella and Pops, but they were nowhere to be seen. Fuck. "We'll set up an interview or something. I have to run now. Have a great time."
Lifting Skylar in my arms, I rushed toward the last place I saw them. My eyes raced around, but they were nowhere to be seen. I fished my phone out to call Bella but remembered that she had left her phone in the bedroom. Multiple possibilities ran through my mind as I imagined their interaction. I tried to calm myself. What was the worst that could happen?
He could convince Bella to leave me and save herself.
Or it could be worse than that.
