Chapter 21- Yami's Redemption Duel
In an unknown location
"For some reason, I can't sense Yami. Whoever it is knows we're looking for him and is somehow blocking my vision. I don't need to tell you how imperative it is that capture Yami and his soul in order to awaken the Great Beast" Dartz said as he spoke to Raphael over the phone.
"He probably didn't survive the train crash" Raphael said.
"Don't be an idiot. I'm sure Yami's new allies have gotten him to safety. This is a serious problem and we need to deal with it before it becomes an even bigger problem" Dartz said.
"I'll find Yami and his friends. They can't run and hide forever, sooner or later they'll have to come out for air" Raphael said.
"Just make sure you don't fail me again" Dartz said as he hung up.
Meanwhile
"So what do we do now?" Tea asked.
"First, we need to find a phone and let Daisuke, Joey and the others know we're ok. Then we need to let Prof. Hawkins know what happen and see if he can wire us some money to get to Florida" Michael said.
"We need to be careful. I'm sure Dartz is looking for us as we speak" Yami said.
"You're right. His goons are probably out there right now, just waiting for us to slip" Yolei said.
"We should get walking. If we stay out here any longer, we're going to be sitting ducks" Tatum said.
"Let's get going" Betamon said as the gang started walking.
Later
As the gang was walking, they came across a Native American tent and an old man in Native American clothing. he turned around and noticed the others.
"Hello, how can I help you?" The man said.
"Hi, we're kind of stranded and we were hoping we could use your phone if you have one" Tea asked.
"I'm sorry, but unfortunately we don't have any phones here. But I sense that there's something wrong with your friend" The man said as he referred to Yami.
"How did you know Mr.." Tatum trailed off.
"Call me Ironheart" The man called Ironheart said.
"Well, Ironheart. What did you mean something was wrong with Yugi?" Yolei asked.
"I sense he's missing a part of himself, something must have happen that made him lose it." Ironheart said.
"Well, is there a way to help Yugi?" Michael asked.
"There is. It's called the Stone Wilderness, where spirits cross over from time to time. I'm willing to bet it maybe able to help your friend" Ironheart said.
"Can you take us there?" Yami asked.
"Of course. Let me get my granddaughter, and we'll be on our way. By the way, I never got your names" Ironheart said.
"I'm Tea, this is Yolei, Michael, Tatum, and Yugi" Tea said.
"And this is Hawkmon, Betamon, and up there is Airdramon" Michael said as he referred to the Digimon that were with them.
"Grandpa, is everything ok?" A young girl wearing a hat and Native American clothing came walking out of the tent asked.
"This is Chris. My granddaughter" Ironheart said as he introduced to the gang to the girl named Chris as a husky dog came out of the tent.
"This is Sky" Chris said introducing the husky.
"I think it's best we get underway" Ironheart said he lead the others.
A few minutes later
"How much further, Ironheart?" Tea asked.
"Not too far. But be careful, the way there can be very dangerous" Ironheart answered.
"Let's just hope Yugi is there" Yami thought.
"Here we are" Ironheart said as the gang soon came to the top of the mountain where they saw a circle with stones at various points around it. "Your friend should be there" Ironheart said Yami walked towards the circle.
"Should we go with him?" Tea asked.
"This is something your friend must do by himself if he is to find closure" Ironheart said as the others looked on in concern.
As Yami walked towards the circle, there were orbs of light circling around him. the orbs taking on the forms of former enemies Yami dueled in the past, including Weevil. Just then, something flew over Yami.
"What is that?" Tea asked.
"A new spirit has crossed over into our world" Chris said as the orb took on the form of a person Yami knew very well.
"It's Yugi" Tea said.
"Yugi. I found you at last" Yami said as he went to hug his friend but for some reason he went right through him.
"I'm so sorry for everything. You were right about the Seal. I gave into my temptation and it cost me everything, including you" Yami said.
"I'm sorry too. I wished this whole thing never happened" Yugi said.
"Perhaps Raphael was right. Maybe I am becoming evil, without your light to keep me pure, I'm slowly inching more and more towards the darkness that lurks in my heart" Yami said.
"What good is that now? I'm locked away and you're still here" Yugi said in anger.
"Yugi, I wish I could take it all back. I really do" Yami pleaded.
"Then there's only thing to do. You need to be a man for once and face me in a duel" Yugi said as he walked over to the other side of the circle and soon a duel disk appeared on his left arm.
"What are you doing?" Yami said.
"Teaching you a lesson. If you're really sorry, you'll do this" Yugi said.
"Very well. If I must" Yami said as he activated his duel disk and the 2 drew their first 5 cards.
"Let's duel!" Yami and Yugi shouted.
(Yami: 4000)
(Yugi: 4000)
"Is Yugi really going through with this?" Tea asked.
"It's the only way your friend can move on and prepare for the coming battles with Dartz" Ironheart said.
"How do you know all this?" Michael asked.
"We've always know that someone would one day arrive to save our world" Chris said as the others watched the duel.
"I'll start by summoning one monster in defense mode" Yugi said as a facedown card appeared. "Let's see what you got, unless you're scared" Yugi added.
"Then I draw" Yami said as he drew a card. "I summon Gazelle, the King of Mythical Beasts in attack mode" Yami announced as Gazelle appeared with a roar. (Attk: 1500) "Attack his facedown card!" Yami commanded as Gazelle attack the facedown card, only for it to be revealed it was a Gazelle too.
"Wait, are we holding the same cards?" Yami asked as he looked at his hand to see Sangan, Card Destruction, Griffore, Monster Reborn, and Berfomet. "Let's see" Yugi said as he drew another card. "I'll summon another monster in defense mode" Yugi said as another facedown card appeared as Yami drew a card.
"Do these look familiar? They're Polymerization and Berfomet. I'll use them to fuse with Gazelle to form Chimera, the Flying Mythical Beast" Yami announced as his 2 monsters fuse to create the 2 headed, winged monster who gave a mighty roar. (Attk: 2100) "Next, I play Griffore in attack mode" Yami added as large, pink monster with wings appeared. (Attk: 1200)
"Now Griffore attack his facedown card!" Yami commanded as Griffore pounced on Yugi's facedown card, revealing it to be Sangan. (Def: 600) "And with no monsters to protect you, Chimera attack Yugi's life points!" Yami commanded as Chimera pounced on Yugi.
(Yugi: 1900)
"That's strange. If we do have the same hand, why didn't Yugi use Monster Reborn to bring back Gazelle to block my attack? He must be up to something" Yami thought.
"By destroying Sangan, you left me move a monster with 1500 points or less from my deck to my hand" Yugi said as he took a card from his deck and added it to his hand.
"Yes. Good move" Yami said.
"I don't need your complements. So now I place one card facedown and then I play Card Destruction. Surprised? Now you won't need to cheat anymore" Yugi said as he discarded his hand and drew a new one.
"Why are you doing this, Yugi?" Yami asked.
"I'm just a mirror version of you. So the darkness that's in your heart is inside my heart" Yugi answered.
"What do you mean?" Yami asked again.
"It's time to take a good look at all the damage you caused and all the pain you left, and there's only card that can do that" Yugi said as he drew a card.
"Yugi, please tell you didn't..." Yami trailed off.
"This card is about to force you to take a look at yourself from the inside and that card is...the Seal of Orichalcos" Yugi said as he placed the card in the field slot of his duel disk which'd caused it to glow and soon, the dreaded seal descended from the sky and surrounded Yami and Yugi.
"Yugi, what did you do?" Yami asked in shock.
"I did what needed to be done. And now it's payback time for taking my soul. Now go and discard your hand already, I played Card Destruction remember?" Yugi asked as the Seal appeared on his forehead, while Yami discarded his hand and drew a new one.
"Next, I reveal my facedown card, Monster Reborn. And I'll use it to bring back my Dark Magician to the field in attack mode" Yugi said as his facedown card flipped up and the purple robed magician appeared. (Attk: 2500) "Next, I play Celtic Guardian" Yugi added as the elf warrior appeared. (Attk: 1400). "And thanks to the Seal, my monsters get an extra 500 points" Yugi said as the Seal appeared on his monsters' foreheads.
(Dark Magician: 2500-3000)
(Celtic Guardian: 1400-1900)
"Celtic Guardian, destroy his Griffore!" Yugi commanded as the elf warrior charged and sliced Griffore down the middle, destroying it.
(Yami: 3300)
"Next comes Dark Magician, incinerate his Mythical Beast!" Yugi commanded as his magician fired a blast of energy from it's staff, destroying Chimera in a blinding explosion.
(Yami: 2400)
"I'll use Chimera's special ability to bring back Berfomet in defense mode" Yami said as the four-armed, winged monster appeared on its knees, crouching in front of Yami. (Def: 1800)
"Big deal. What else you got?" Yugi asked.
"This" Yami answered by drawing a card. "The mighty Big Shield Gardna in defense mode" Yami said as the shield-wielding monster appeared in front of it's master on one knee. (Def: 2600)
"Good move. Even if Yugi manages to destroy Berfomet, Yami will still have a strong defense to protect him" Tea said.
"Let's hope so" Tatum said as they watched the duel.
"And I'm supposed to be scared? Watch this" Yugi said as he drew a card. "I play Queen's Knight in attack mode" Yugi said as the female swordsman appeared. (Attk: 1500-2000)
"And to boost my fire power, I'll power up my Dark Magician with the Book of Secret Arts. This magic card increases my monster's attack and defense points by 300" Yugi said as a book appeared in front of Dark Magician, which'd opened and soon Dark Magician began to glow from the power boost. (Dark Magician- Attk: 3000-3300/Def: 2100-2400)
"Queen's Knight, attack!" Yugi commanded as the female swordsman charged with a battle cry and sliced Berfomet down the middle, destroying it.
"Next my Dark Magician will take out your Big Shield Gardna" Yugi said as Dark Magician fired another blast of dark magic at Yami's monster, destroying it.
"And there's one more thing. Celtic Guardian, attack his life points!" Yugi commanded as his elf warrior charged at Yami and sliced him across the chest.
(Yami: 1700)
"It hurts, doesn't it? And it only gets worse" Yugi said.
"Yugi, please. You have to snap out of this. You know what happens if one of us loses the duel?" Yami pleaded.
"I know what I'm doing. I'm teaching you a lesson on what happens when you fall into temptation and turn your back on those closest to you" Yugi said.
"I have to find a way to get through to Yugi. But how?" Yami thought as he drew a card. "I place one card facedown and I'll summon Giant Soldier of Stone in defense mode" Yami said as a facedown card appeared followed by a giant stone monster that was kneeling on it's knees with it's arms crossed. (Def: 2000)
"Next I play Swords of Revealing Light" Yami said as swords of light rained down on Yugi's side of the field.
"That's all? I have a card that get through your swords without any problems. It's a card you used last time, remember?" Yugi said as he drew a card which'd caused Yami to widen his eyes in dread. "I sacrifice Celtic Guardian to summon Catapult Turtle" Yugi said as the elf warrior vanished and Catapult Turtle appeared in it's place. (Attk: 1000-1500)
"This is just what I did last time" Yami thought as he remembered using the card in his duel with Raphael.
"This isn't good" Michael said.
"Yugi can sacrifice his monsters to deal a direct blow to Yami's life points" Tea said in worry.
"I'm sure Yami's facedown card can help him" Yolei said as she looked at Yami's facedown card.
"Now I sacrifice Queen's Knight which will allow me cut it's attack points in half and deal direct damage to your life points" Yugi said as Queen's Knight got on the catapult.
"Catapult launch!" Yugi commanded as Catapult Turtle launched Queen's Knight which soon turned into a ball of energy which'd stuck Yami in the chest.
(Yami: 950)
"One more attack and you'll be locked away, just like me" Yugi said.
"Yugi, please. This has to stop" Yami pleaded again.
"It's too late. And now I sacrifice my Dark Magician to finish you off" Yugi said as his magician got on the catapult.
"Yugi, please" Yami pleaded last time.
"It's over. Catapult launch!" Yugi commanded as Catapult Turtle launched Dark Magician who turned into another ball of energy.
"I can't let it end like this. I'm sorry, Yugi. I activate the trap card, Divine Wind!" Yami announced as his facedown card flipped up and soon, a tornado appeared and blocked the attack. "My trap card spares my life points, but it also redirects the attack right back at your life points and doubles the damage I would have received" Yami explained as the tornado caused the ball of energy to grow and sent it back to Yugi who hit by the attack.
(Yugi: 0)
"It's over?" Tea asked.
"Yugi, are you ok?" Yami asked as he ran over to check his friend who was laying on the ground, just as the Seal vanished.
"You passed your test. Congratulations" Yugi said.
"What test?" Yami asked.
"By defeating me, you were able to conquer the darkness in your heart. Now you're ready to face Dartz" Yugi said.
"But what if I'm not strong enough?" Yami asked.
"You are. Just remember you have the heart of the cards on and your friends by your side. And know that I'll always be with you, even in spirit" Yugi said as he closed his eyes and faded away from Yami's arms.
"Wait, Yugi! Come back!" Yami said as he sunk to his knees and stated crying. "I promise I will get you back, Yugi. No matter what" Yami thought as he continued to cry while the others watched in sadness.
The End
Yami may have been able to deal with the darkness in his heart, thanks to Yugi. But what new challenges await him? Find out next time.
