Chapter 58: Only You

Two Weeks later…

Thomas was sleeping in his room having a nightmare tossing and turning while having a cold sweat. Images of Chilli bleeding flashed in his dream, he could still hear her crying. Thomas jumped up from his bed and was breathing hard. Not knowing how to feel he cried. He knew his stepmom was alright and feeling better but he was still worried about her. Thomas looked at his clock and saw it was three in the morning. Thomas then got out of bed and went to the bathroom. Thomas washed his hands after using the bathroom and Splashed some cold water in his face. Thomas looked on the ground where the blood use to be from Chilli's miscarriage. Thomas started to feel uneasy with the room closing in on him.

Thomas looked in the mirror and everything went to normal. Thomas shed a tear and then left the bathroom. Thomas grabbed his blanket and pillow and went to his parents room. Thomas looked at his parents who were sleeping soundly cuddling each other. Thomas took a deep breath and laid down on Chilli's side of the bed on the floor. Thomas laid on his side again looking away from the bed and took a deep breath and exhaled. The next morning Chilli and Bandit had woken up and sat up. "Oh!" Chilli said, looking down on the floor. "What's wrong babe?" Bandit asked, looking at his wife. "Our son's sleeping on the floor," Chilli said looking at Thomas who clearly looked cold from being on the floor. "Oh mate," Bandit said, looking at his son from his wife's side of the bed.

Chilli lightly walked over her son and then placed her hand on his shoulder. "Thomas?" Chilli said softly. Thomas woke up and rubbed his eyes. "Mate? Why did you sleep on the floor?" Bandit asked, sitting down next to his son against the bed. Chilli also sat next to Thomas with her back against the bed. "I… I just been having nightmares lately about you mom," Thomas said looking at Chilli. Bandit and Chilli looked at each other and then looked at Thomas. "Sweetie, I know that was hard for you to see and it's been hard on all of us," Chilli said, placing her hand on her son's leg. "I know but if I… if I didn't leave you," Thomas said looking down. "You did the best you could, mate," Bandit said, putting his hand on his son's shoulder. "I could have done more! Just like when it was mom!" Thomas shouted, looking at his dad. "Thomas…" Bandit said "I have to get ready for school," Thomas said, standing up and leaving the room. Bandit and Chilli looked at each other and then placed their hands on one another.

Chilli was making Bluey and Bingo breakfast When Thomas grabbed a banana and was about to leave until Chilli stopped him. "It's okay sweetie," Chilli whispered to her son and kissed on his cheek. A tear fell from his muzzle as he left for school. Bluey and Bingo haven't spoken about the incident since they heard about their mother losing the baby. Chilli placed down some toast and their cereal. "How are you two holding up?" Chilli asked, looking at her daughters. Bluey and Bingo shrugged, not looking at their mother. "I know that everything that happened was really hard," Chilli said, holding her daughters hands. "Are you okay mum?" Bluey asked, looking at her mother . "I will be," Chilli said with a warm smile. "Is dad okay?" Bingo asked, looking at her mother. "He'll be okay sweetie," Chilli said looking at Bingo. "And Thomas?" Bluey asked, taking a bite of her toast. "He's taking it the hardest but we will be here for him," Chilli said with a smile. "Yeah we will!" The girls said with a smile.

Thomas went out to his car and got in it and started it. "Mate! Wait!" Bandit said coming out to the driveway. Thomas rolled down his window and looked at his dad. "Thomas, you can stay home if you want, we all could just take this time for ourselves and heal mate," Bandit said Thomas thought for a moment but his thoughts raced back to seeing Chilli having a panic attack on the bathroom floor. Thomas shook himself out of that thought and looked at his dad. "I'm going to be late dad, I have to go," Thomas said as he started back up his car. Bandit sighed and watched his son leave down the road.

Bandit walked back into the house and went into the kitchen. "Couldn't get him to stay?" Chilli asked, looking at Bandit. "No, I couldn't," Bandit said, rubbing the back of his neck. Chilli then walked up to Bandit and hugged him. Bandit hugged his wife back and they hugged each other for a moment. Bluey and Bingo then got up from their seats and hugged their parents. "I wish Thomas was here," Bluey said while hugging her parents. "Yeah, me too!" Bingo said. Bandit then picked up both of his girls. "At least we're together, your brother will be back after school," Bandit said with a smile. "Hooray!" They girls said. "Let's play a game," Chilli said with a smile. "Hooray!" The girls said again. Bandit chuckled as they then started their game.

Later in the day Thomas had a study period which was his last class and went to the library to work on school work. "Thomas?" Tori asked, looking at the Blue Heeler. "Hi Tori," Thomas said looking up at her. Tori then sat down next to him. "Are you okay? You barely said a word to anyone all day," Tori said, placing her hand on her boyfriend's shoulder. "Doing the best that I can I guess," Thomas said, gripping his book. Tori nodded. "How's Mrs Heeler?" Tori asked. "Fine," Thomas said looking at his book. "Good! Um, my mum wanted to stop by and give her something. What day do you think would be best to stop by?" Tori asked. Thomas was paying attention to her only on his school work. "Thomas?" Tori asked. "W-what? Oh any day is fine I guess," Thomas said, still looking at his school work. Tori didn't want to push it as she opened her book and started on her homework.

Later after school was over Tori kissed Thomas's muzzle. Making him blush he looked at her. "You can alway talk to me if you need me," Tori said before gathering her things before leaving for home. Thomas looked down and grabbed his things before chasing after her. "Tori?" Thomas said, stopping her before leaving the school building. "Yes?" Tori asked, looking at her boyfriend. "Can I.. can I give you a ride home?" Thomas asked, rubbing the back of his neck. Tori smiled, "of course you can," Tori said, pushing her hair to the side. "Great!" Thomas said, wagging his tail. "My cars this way," Thomas said as he led the way to his car. Tori followed the Heeler to his car.

Thomas opened her side of the car and let her in. "What a gentleman," Tori said, getting into the car. Thomas then got on the driver's side and then started his car. Thomas then started to drive and drove Tori home. Thomas felt at ease with Tori and didn't feel those emotions of what happened two weeks ago. "If you ever need a ride to school I can take you," Thomas said while driving. "They would be nice," Tori said with a smile. "Then it's settled! I'll pick you up and take you home," Thomas said with a smile. Tori smiled with a chuckle.

Thomas pulled up to the front of Tori's house. Tori was about to open her car door until Thomas jumped out and opened it for her. "Thank you," Tori said, getting out of the car. Thomas and Tori looked each other in the eye and Thomas chuckled looking at her. Tori then kissed him and then rested her head on his. "Don't be scared to open up to me," Tori said softly. "I just… it really scared me seeing my stepmom that way," Thomas said, turning away. "It reminded me of seeing my mom dying and that I couldn't have done more for her," Thomas said, still looking away. Tori placed her hand on Thomas's muzzle and made him look at her. "You were the one who helped her when no one was home, you were the one to calm her down when she was scared and you were the first person he saw and she is so great to have a son like you," Tori said before hugging him. Thomas hugged back and then let her go.

"It'll be okay in the end, Chilli is still here and she loves you very much," Tori said with a smile before kissing him on his cheek. "See you tomorrow?" Tori asked while grabbing her back. "Yes…. Actually Tori?" Thomas asked, looking at her. "Hmm?" Tori asked, looking at Thomas. "Would you uh go to dinner with me Friday?" Thomas asked nervously even though he shouldn't be nervous around her anymore. Tori chuckled and smiled. "Of course, I'd love to," Tori said still with her smile before heading to the porch of her house. "Great! I'll text you!" Thomas said as he shut his passenger door and got back into his car. "Sounds good!" Tori said before going into her house. Thomas started his car and started driving. Thomas felt better knowing Tori was always someone he trusted and was… starting to develop deeper feelings for. Was this the "love" his dad was talking about? Thomas didn't want to go back home just yet even though he felt better. He wanted some more time to process his feelings and what he would say to his parents. So Thomas went to the one dog who understands mixed feelings and emotions.

Chilli was doing some housework until she heard the doorbell bell ring. Chilli then went to answer the door. "Hi Bella, what brings you by?" Chilli asked with a smile. "I brought you a casserole, honey I'm so sorry about everything," Bella said looking down at her casserole. "Thank you Bella it's been getting easier at least for me, Bandit, Bluey and Bingo," Chilli said, also looking down. "Oh no? Is Thomas taking it the hardest? I imagine so," Bella said looking at Chilli. "Please, come in, let's talk," Chilli said as she took the casserole from Bella. Bandit was outside rolling around with Bluey and Bingo laughing and having fun. "It's so great to see them laughing and having fun, they need that distraction," Bella said with a smile. "Yeah it is," Chilli said looking down at them from the balcony. "Tell me, how's Thomas really doing?" Bella asked, looking at Chilli. "He slept on the floor on my side of bed," Chilli answered still looking to her husband and daughters. "He's worried about you," Bella said, still looking at Chilli. "I know he does, he loves and cares about me a lot, much like his father," Chilli said looking down.

"He shouldn't have to see me like that," Chilli said with a sigh. "But it's a good thing he was here," Bella said, placing her hand on Chilli's. Chilli looked at Bella with a slight tear. "I'm glad he was there too," Chilli said with a warm smile. Bella smiled and then hugged Chilli. Chilli hugged her friend with happy tears running down her muzzle.

Thomas and Verano were at the same cafe where they had gotten pie the last time they met. Thomas was in daze just looking at his pie with his ice cream melting and coffee getting cold while he looked at it. "You okay Thomas?" Verano asked, getting his friends' attention. "Hmm? Oh sorry, what were you saying again?" Thomas asked, looking at Verano. "I was talking about this customer my grandpa and I had, they weren't very nice to me," Verano said looking down.

"Oh I'm sorry about that," Thomas said looking down also while taking a bite of his pie. "I feel like there's something bigger than my customer problems, what's wrong?" Verano asked, looking at Thomas. Thomas sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Verano, remember when I told you stepmom was pregnant?" Thomas asked, looking at his friend. "Oh yeah! I remember!" Verano said happily but then realized there was a change in Thomas's tone.

"Was? Thomas what happened?" Verano asked worriedly while gripping the table. "My stepmom had a miscarriage," Thomas said in a low tone to Verano. "What?!" Verano said rather loudly, making other dogs look at him strangely. "Hey she's fine now," Thomas said looking at Verano. "B-but she had a miscarriage?! She must be completely destroyed," Verano said, almost panicking. "Hey, hey, calm down," Thomas said, trying to calm him down. "She's fine, yes it hurt her… and I…" Thomas said trailing off. "You what?" Verano asked, confused. "I was the one she called and told, I was on my way home with dinner and it happened. I… I blame myself for just going to get stupid dinner," Thomas said looking down. "Are you both okay?" Verano asked, looking at his friend. "My stepmom is and I… I have mixed feelings about it," Thomas said. "Don't blame yourself for it," Verano said softly and more calmly . "How can I not?" Thomas asked, looking at Verano.

"Because you're both still here and she doesn't blame you does she?" Verano asked, still calmly. "No," Thomas answered. "Then there you have it! It was tragic and sad and your family is healing and your healing, that's what's important," Verano explained. "You and everyone else says the same thing," Thomas said while eating his pie and drinking his coffee. "Everyone isn't wrong for you healing the best way possible, come on Thomas go home and be with your family," Verano said with a warm smile. Thomas looked at Verano and smiled with a nod. Verano had paid for the pies and coffees and the two went their separate ways . Thomas was walking to his car until he saw a Heeler that looked similar to his grandfather Bob. "Granddad?" Thomas said, walking up to the Heeler.

"Thomas!" The Heeler said with a smile. "Oh sorry I thought- wait, how do you know my name?" Thomas asked. "It's me! Great Uncle Billy!" Billy said with a smile. "Great Uncle Billy?" Thomas said, confused. "Ah your granddad is always forgetting to Mention his favorite baby brother," Billy said still with a smile. "Since when did he-" Thomas was about to ask until Billy interrupted him. "Anyways mate let's get going! Conrad has stolen my teeth again!" Billy said, trying to open Thomas's car door. "Conrad? Teeth? Hang on! I barely know you! A-and you have teeth in your mouth!" Thomas said, looking at the Heeler. "Yeah! But Conrad stole my other teeth! Ah you sound just like Stripes when he was younger," Bill said, still trying to open the car door.

"Stripes? Oh! Uncle Stripe!" Thomas said, now I'm getting it. "Yes yes now come on Tommy let's go get my teeth!" Billy said while trying to get in the car. However, despite that dog knowing something about his family, he couldn't just trust in him like that. But then again he didn't know much about his paternal side of the family besides his close relatives. Taking his phone, he went to call his father. "Hey, son, is everything okay? You haven't got home from school yet," Bandit asked. "Don't worry, dad, I just went to meet a friend… you know, to clear my head…" Thomas told. "Okay… but try not to get home too late," Bandit asked. "I am just about to go home, but… The reason I called is because I just… met someone rather… odd, he says that he's my… uncle Billy…" Thomas told. "Oh, uncle Billy is there? I didn't know he was in town…" Bandit commented. "Wait, are you saying that dog is actually grandad Bob's brother?" Thomas asked. "Yeah, why do you… wait, don't tell me… is he a little…" Bandit asked. "Drunk? Let's just say he is trying to open my car without realizing it is closed," Thomas replied, not very amused.

"Hey, kid, who are you talking to?" Billy asked, as he approached. "Ah… my dad…" Thomas started, not ending as Billy went to take his phone. "Oh, with Bandit, hein… Then let me talk with him… hey Bands! It's me!" Billy exclaimed. "Hey, uncle Billy… So nice to hear you…" Bandit replied. "And me you, kid… It has been years since we talked… Hey, once Tommy here helps he find my teeth, maybe I can get a family reunion," Billy said. "Sounds good… Hey, can you let me talk to Thomas, please?" Bandit asked. "Sure thing, mate," Billy replied, as he passed the phone back to Thomas and went to try to open the latter's car. "Hey, dad…" he said. "Hey, mate, can you do me a big favor?" Bandit asked. "Let me guess… you want me to babysit uncle Billy?" Thomas asked, with little enthusiasm. "More like… make sure he doesn't get into trouble and bring him back home," Bandit replied. "Yeah… babysitting…" Thomas replied back. "I'll give you ten bucks and free you from your next babysitting duty," Bandit told. "Make it twenty bucks and two babysitting duties… at my choice… and you have a deal," Thomas replied. "Biscuits! I thought for sure you would fall for the babysitting loophole…" Bandit mumbled. "Not a second time I won't…" Thomas replied.

"Okay, mate, we have a deal" Bandit replied. "Great… I will take uncle Billy home as fast as I can," Thomas replied. "Okay, but try not to dodge your look away from him, trust me he can be very sneaky," Bandit warned. "Dad, I think I can take care of an old drunken dog…" Thomas said, turning around only to see that uncle Billy was not by his car anymore. "What the… Where did he… Dad, look, I need to go, I really need to… Well, see ya!" Thomas said, hanging off the phone. It didn't take long for Bandit to realize that his son had just lost their uncle, causing him to chuckle. "Same uncle Billy…" he said. "Uncle Billy? Now that's a name I've not heard in a while…" Chilli said, as she entered the study with a cup of tea for her husband. "Thanks, babe," Bandit replied, as he received the cup of tea. "Yeah, Thomas found him, but he was a little…" Bandit started. "Tipsy?" Chilli asked, with a smile. "I think that's the normal state of my uncle, but Thomas will take care of bringing him here… somehow," Bandit told. "I guess I will prepare some coffee then…" Chilli said. "Please, do, thanks, babe," Bandit replied, as his wife got out of the study.

Taking the phone, he started to call Stripe. He was the only one that could help him at that moment. After waiting for a few moments, Stripe answered the call. "Bro, what's up? Don't tell me you miss your little bro…" he said. "You wished… No, mate, I have a favor to ask you," Bandit told. "Oh no… a favor from you? That cannot be good…" Stripe commented. "Hey, you made it look like I always ask for bad favors…" Bandit replied. "Well, you don't have the best record when it comes to favors… I still feel mum's thong from

that time I covered up for you when you went up to meet your mates" Stripe told. "Yeah, yeah, but this one is not like those times, did you know uncle Billy is in town?" Bandit asked. "He is? I didn't know that… But he is the type of dog to appear when you least expect. Is he with you?" Stripe asked, surprised. "No, he is with Thomas, he found him… you know…" Bandit replied. "Yeah, I know…" Stripe said, realizing what his older brother was trying to say.

"Anyway, Thomas is bringing him home at the moment, but I can't exactly have him stay here, I have work, Thomas needs to study and I can't ask Chilli to look after him so soon after… you know…" Bandit said. "Yeah, I get it… but he can't stay here either," Stripe told. "I figured that much, that's why I was thinking you could go get Dad, he will know what to do with uncle Billy better than us," Bandit said. "You do know it takes at least one hour to go there, right? Why don't you call him to come?" Stripe asked. "Because Mum is at that thing of hers and she took the car, come on, bro, do this favor for me… and uncle Billy," Bandit said. "Fine, I'll do that…" Stripe sighed. "Great!" "But you're the one that will take them back, if we're doing that, we'll share the responsibility," Stripe said. "Deal, thanks bro," Bandit said, ending the call. "Well, that's taken care of… I just hope Thomas is doing okay with uncle Billy," Bandit said.

"Now where did he…" Thomas said looking for his great uncle. "Hey mate! Come join me for a drink!" Billy said going into a bar. "Oh no you don't," Thomas said going into the bar. "Hey! You're not of age to be in here," said the bartender. "Sorry! I'm just grabbing my uncle!" Thomas said, grabbing the old blue Heeler. "But, what about the drink?" Billy asked as Thomas dragged Billy out. "Sorry uncle Billy but I'm sixteen I'm not of age to drink," Thomas said while walking back to his car. "Bah! When I was sixteen I had all the girls around my fingers," Billy with a hiccup "hard to believe that," Thomas said now back at his car. Thomas unlocked his car and helps his uncle into the car.

Thomas then gets into the car and starts it. "Alright my dad said-" Thomas started to say but then Billy spoke up. "There's Conrad!" Billy said pointing at an ice cream truck. "It's just an ice cream truck," Thomas said. "Go after it!" Billy shouted. "What?!" Thomas said confused. "Conrad has my teeth! And I need them mate!" Billy said now very worried about his teeth. "It's just an Ice cream truck I don't think-" Thomas started to say until Billy jumps into Thomas's lap and tries to drive the car himself to get to the ice cream truck. "Hey! What gives?!" Thomas said as the car moved up almost into another car. "My teeth mate! My teeth!" Billy said almost in a panic. "Alright! Alright!" Thomas said as Billy got into his seat. Thomas made sure it was clear and then he took off.

"This is not how I wanted my day to go," Thomas said while racing to the ice cream truck. "How is your day mate?" Billy asked while looking at Thomas. "Horrible! My stepmom is in pain and I don't know how to help her!" Thomas said as he swerved in and out of traffic. "Ah Chilli dog, she's a strong dog. I'm glad Brandon got a nice second wife," Billy said with a burp. "Bandit! My dad's name is Bandit!" Thomas shouted out of Frustration "that's what I said Bandit," Billy said with a smile.

"Ugh!" Thomas said while driving. "But why is Chilli dog in pain? It's a jellyfish sting is it? Your dad can always-" Billy started to say until Thomas interrupted him. "No! It's nothing like that! She had a miscarriage!" Thomas said with tears running down his muzzle just as the truck stopped. Thomas then pulled over. "I'll go get your teeth," Thomas said as he left his car and locked it so Billy couldn't run off with it. Billy noticed despite being drunk, the blue Heeler new that his great nephew was hurting a lot with guilt with his stepmother's miscarriage.

Thomas walked up to the ice cream truck as the dog inside was giving ice cream to some little kids. "Are you Conrad?" Thomas asked, looking at the old wolfhound in the truck. "I am! How can I help you mate?" Conrad asked with a smile. Thomas wiped his tears away and then looked at Conrad. "Listen, my great uncle is in my car and he said you stole his teeth," Thomas said, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Oh! You're Billy's great nephew! Yeah I have his teeth," Conrad said while getting them from the back. "Here you go nice and cold for the old fool," Conrad said Handing Thomas the cold teeth. "Gross… thanks," Thomas said, taking the teeth. "And tell Billy the same time next week for our game!" Conrad said with a chuckle. "This is a game?" Thomas asked, looking at the old wolfhound. "Yep! Once a week we steal each other's things and run through the city with them," Conrad explained. "Oh that's… fun," Thomas said as he went back to his car and unlocked it. Thomas got into his car and handed Billy his teeth. "Here's your… ice cold teeth," Thomas said, handing him the teeth. "Thanks mate!" Billy said, taking out his old teeth in his mouth and then putting the new teeth in his mouth. "Now can we please just go home," Thomas said as he started the car.

"Listen mate about Chilli dog, she is a very strong dog mate and when I was at your dad and her wedding before falling in the pool as your uncle Rad saved me, I know she would she would be a great mother and this miscarriage… I know it hurts but she'll bounce back like she always does," Billy said while rubbing the back of his head. "If I didn't go get dinner I would have been there for her," Thomas said, tearing up. Billy sighed and then slapped Thomas in the back of the head. "Ow! What the hell?!" Thomas said, rubbing the back of his head.

"Now! That hurt didn't it?" Billy asked. "Yeah! It did!" Thomas said, still rubbing it. "But it's in the past now isn't it?" Billy said, crossing his arms with a smirk. "Yeah but it still hurts," Thomas said looking at his uncle. "But in the end it's all in the past now and you got to look into the future now," Billy said. "Right," Thomas said, now realizing what his great uncle was saying. "Right right now let's go!" Billy said, sticking his head out the window and letting his tongue out. Thomas looked at his great uncle and chuckled before going home.

Bandit became a little worried since his son hasn't come home yet. "Don't worry mate, Uncle Billy can be a handful but he's harmless," Bob said to his son. "I know, but Thomas has been distinct since the miscarriage and I'm worried maybe I put too much on him by having him look after uncle Billy," Bandit said looking down. Bob felt bad for his son and knew this was the second time he experienced a miscarriage. The first time when Emily was with Rad and now Chilli. "Hey mate," Bob said, placing his hand on his son's shoulder. "I know this is a hard time for both of you but know your both Heelers and you two are strong," Bob said with a reassuring smile. Bandit looked at his father and smiled. "Thanks dad I know we are and thank you for being here for me," Bandit said before hugging his father.

"Brandon! we're home sweetie!" Billy said coming into the house. "And… there's uncle Billy," Bandit said, now coming out of his study. "Bandit uncle Billy, his name is Bandit," Chilli said with a chuckle. "That's what I said Willy Bandit," Billy said with a smile. "Right, Granddad! he's all yours!" Chilli said before going outside.

"Come one little brother of mine, let's get you some coffee," Bob said while guiding his little brother to the kitchen. Chilli noticed her son hasn't came into the house just yet as he was sitting in his car. Chilli then went over to the blue Heelers car and got into the passenger side. "M-mom?" Thomas said, looking at Chilli. Chilli then looked at her son and then hugged him tightly. "I know these last two weeks have been very hard on you son, but please I need you to let it go," Chilli said softly. "I know mom it's in the past now I'm just glad you're safe and healthy," Thomas said, hugging her back. "I know I probably don't say it often as much as I do but I love you so much mom and my mom loved you for my dad and that means so much to me," Thomas said now looking Chilli the eye with a shed of a tear down his muzzle.

Chilli smiled, wiping the tears from her son's muzzle. "I've always told your mum and your dad that you were the son I've always wanted, yes another baby with your dad was going to be nice but I have what I wanted most right in front me my baby boy and my two little girls, even if your not biologically mine you are still one of my babies," Chilli said with happy tears. Thomas couldn't hold it any longer and rested his head on Chilli's chest and cried in her arms. Chilli sat there humming while rubbing her son's back while she silently cried and kissed him on his head.

Friday…

Thomas had contacted his Uncle Prince for a dinner reservation at a fancy restaurant as a favor to impress Tori. "This is nice," Tori said with a smile while looking at her boyfriend. "Yes I had a little help getting us here," Thomas said nervously. "How sweet, but you know, you don't have to impress me with a big fancy dinner," Tori said, placing her hand on Thomas's hand. "I don't?" Thomas asked, looking down thinking. "No, whatever you do will always be the sweetest thing to me," Tori said before she kissed him. Thomas kissed her back. "Tori…" Thomas said looking at his girlfriend. "Yes Thomas?" Tori asked. "Just know it's going to be you, only you," Thomas said with a soft smile. "You can't promise that Thomas but it's just focus on now," Tori said again giving her boyfriend a kiss. "Your right let's focus on now," Thomas said before giving her a kiss back.
