Hey Guys! Chapter 13
Chapter 13
A week later, all the votes were nearly in, although Alexander hadn't chosen yet. In the last few weeks, Burr seemed to be causing quite a stir and everyone thought that Jefferson was just the candidate that was 'in love with France'. Alexander had stopped telling her his thoughts on the election ever since Burr had come over to the house. As the election was coming to a close, Alexander finally chose between Burr and Jefferson, Eliza found this out when he came into the house one afternoon practically skipping and jumping. Eliza went over to him and he pulled her into a passionate kiss. Eliza embraced him and after their kiss he twirled her as if they were dancing at a ball. Eliza giggled.
"What has put you in such a great mood?" She asked, curious
"Well I feel like a weight has left my shoulders!" He replied
"And why's that?"
"Well I finally made my choice in the election and I feel it's the right one!" He said beaming. Eliza smiled, already sure he'd chosen his friend Burr
"And who was it? Burr?" She asked
"No, I chose Jefferson!" Eliza was shocked. Her eyebrows shot up in surprise
"Jefferson? Why? I thought you hated him" she said
"And I do! I have never once agreed with him, and we've fought about like seventy-five different things but when all is said and done, he actually has beliefs, while Burr has none"
"Remind me exactly why you chose Jefferson?" she asked.
"it's quite simple, Jefferson believed in things for our country and wellbeing while Burr had beliefs for nothing really" he shrugged
"Hang on, Burr does have beliefs, he believes in women having rights"
"Which is not necessary, hence no good beliefs"
"Alexander! Women need rights!"
"Do they? Because women are needed to look after the house and to stay at home with the children all day. If they went out, who would clean the house or look after them? The house would become dirty, meals wouldn't be cooked, children would be bored and left alone away from their mother…"
"Well we don't have any children anymore so what am i supposed to do all day? Just do housework?!"
"Do not bring Philip into this!"
"Well I just did!" Eliza yelled. Man she could hate him sometimes. Alexander was coming closer and closer to her.
"You do not bring Philip into any fight you hear me?!" he said in a dangerously quiet voice.
"I'm allowed to talk about my own child Alexander. In fact, I'll talk about him whenever I want!" Eliza threw her hands in the air. Alexander ran his hands through his hair.
"No you don't!"
"Yes I do! I'm not like you! And so I'll talk about him if I want!" And before it could register in Eliza's brain, Alexander lifted his hand and slapped her across the face. She stumbled back from the force and shock and saw Alexander looking furious. Silent tears rolled down her face as Alexander came towards her again.
"Philip is not a part of this and that's that. This is also why women will never work, because all women, especially you it seems, are weak! For goodness sake you can't even stand a mere slap! You would never be able to deal with a real slap, none the less the strap!" Eliza flinched as he raised his hand again but only to find he ran his hand through his hair again. As she was about to run upstairs, she turned back to look at him one more time to find that he looked guilty and surprised he had hit her. Well what was done was done, she ran upstairs and shut and locked the door to their room.
Eliza knew Alexander only hit her when he was really really angry. He had only hit her three or four times in their entire marriage. She saw herself in the mirror and saw a red handprint showing on the left side of her face. She fell onto her bed and cried. She didn't mean to provoke him that much, she just wanted to make a point that she was bored of just being expected to work at home and only go out for necessities. Some knocks drifted from the other side of the door but all Eliza did was let Alexander and his weak apologies come through with no response. After a while the door clicked meaning Alexander had been smart enough to find the key box and unlock the door. It took him long enough. She wanted to throw the pillow at him but she was nervous he would hit her again. The bed sank as Alexander sat down next to her. She faced the wall away from him.
"What?" she asked smally but demandingly
"Well, I feel really guilty, I didn't mean to hit you"
"Well you did," she snapped.
"And I regret it! I'm sorry! It's just been a long day of people telling me the same thing over and over about how I didn't choose Burr even though I'm his friend and I just couldn't take it any longer so I lashed out and you know I still don't do well with," his voice broke "Philip" he finished. Eliza sighed and sat up still not looking directly at him.
"I know. I just…I just feel so useless some days because I literally can't go anywhere or do anything without a man or just can't do it straight up because I'm a woman. It's just.. Easy to get overlooked, you know? I just thought that if Burr got in maybe, maybe that would change. For all women." she said quietly. Alexander sighed.
"I… didn't know that. I thought you could mostly do whatever you want"
"Nope. I can only do certain things unless I'm with you"
"Oh" is all he replied with. Eliza rolled her eyes.
"I'm sorry again, you're not weak, you are by far the strongest women I know. You dealt with the Reynolds pamphlet better than most people and you went through…Philip… without breaking and you are amazing still! And you don't look a day over 30 my dear" Eliza couldn't help but let out a small laugh at her age. She was nearly 50! Alexander smiled next to her.
"Can you forgive me Eliza?" He asked hopefully. Eliza let out a small smile
"Nope" she said teasingly
"What?" Alexander said confused
"I said nope" Eliza said with a giggle. Alexander caught on.
"Oh really? Well we'll see about that!" and with that Alexander grabbed his pillow and they engaged in yet another pillow fight.
The next day, all votes were in and Jefferson had won in a landslide, securing most of the country's votes while Burr only got a handful. Eliza hated the idea of Jefferson now having power over the country but mainly she was nervous about how he now had power over Alexander. He could get him arrested for all she knew! Alexander assured her he wouldn't but still. What if he got into a fight with him and Jefferson decided to get rid of her husband? She just didn't know. Alexander carried on with his work and nothing about Jefferson really concerned him. He knew who he had chosen and he didn't regret it. Eliza didn't know exactly what happened at the office but she thought she was honestly better off if she didn't.
That night, there was a knock on the door and Eliza opened it to see the young face of Theodosia Burr. Philip had had the intention to court her before he died so Eliza knew Theodosia quite well. She smiled at Theodosia
"Theo! How are you?" she asked warmly
"I'm alright Mrs Hamilton, how are you?"
"Not too bad. Why have you come here?"
"Well Pa is in a bit of a mood and seems to be quite angry with his work and he was writing some pretty angry letters so I cleared out of the house and went on a walk, but then I realised it was getting late and that I shouldn't be out late by myself so I was wondering if i could stay here for a bit? Only if it's not too much trouble" Eliza nodded
"Of course! You are always welcome here! Come in, you can have dinner with us." Theodosia smiled
"Thankyou Mrs Hamilton!" Eliza led her in and shut the door.
"Please, I've told you before, it's Eliza" Theodosia nodded. Alexander then yelled out from upstairs
"Who was it Eliza?!" Eliza smiled and yelled back
"Theodosia!" Footsteps came down the stairs and Alexander appeared.
"Why hello Theodosia! What brings you here at such a late time? Is Aaron with you?" Alexander asked concerned
"No, just me! Pa was a bit annoyed so I went on a walk, noticed it got late and thought I shouldn't be out without someone at this time so I stopped off here and Eliza offered for me to have dinner with you." Alexander nodded. Eliza left the two to talk and she went into the kitchen and began to make dinner. She made corn and pork and they all sat down and began to eat. Once they were done Eliza began to clear the table but Theodosia put her hand on Eliza's shoulder
"I'll do it, you've been so kind to me already"
"No it's fine really! You can just do whatever you want." Eliza said with a shooing gesture towards Theodosia. Theodosia didn't leave though.
"No Eliza, I insist YOU go do what you want while I do the dishes. I'll leave after that, preferably with Alexander?" Theodosia smiled hopefully.
"Yep, I'll let him know. Thankyou Theo for doing the dishes" Eliza said. Theodosia physically relaxed at this and Eliza then left the room to tell Alexander. She then found him in the lounge room reading a book of his.
"Hey Alexander?" Eliza asked. Alexander looked up.
"Yes my dear?"
"Could you possibly walk Theodosia home? It's late and I'd hate for anything to happen to her" Eliza asked. Alexander nodded and placed his bookmark in.
"I'll go grab my shoes and walk her home."
"Thanks!" And with that Eliza went back to the kitchen.
Eliza looked at Theodosia while she did the dishes. Theodosia was such a beautiful woman much like her mother had been. Eliza always hated how Theodosia had grown up with an amazing mother only to one day wake up and find that she was gone from the world. She had always cared for her whenever she needed it, but she hadn't seen her since Philip's funeral. Eliza watched as Theodosia worked quickly through the dishes and she was done in under ten minutes. Theodosia walked back to Eliza and they both hugged.
"See you later Theo"
"Bye Eliza! Thanks for dinner, it was delicious!"
"No worries, bye!" and with that Theodosia went out the door with Alexander. He got back later and by now it was rather late so they went upstairs and got ready for bed.
The next morning, it was cold and wet. Alexander went to work with an umbrella and Eliza stayed inside tending to the fireplace that kept going out because the wood was damp. She was sure that it was snowing somewhere, it didn't get this cold out of nowhere! She pulled up her jumper and sat down on the couch with her book. Today there was nothing Eliza had to do because she had done everything yesterday. Where Alexander had slapped still hurt a bit when she touched it but as long as she didn't touch it she was fine. Alexander was to come home early this afternoon for whatever reason but Eliza wasn't complaining. Halfway through her book, a knock at the door came. Eliza placed her bookmark in and briskly walked over and opened it. It was absolutely pouring outside but there stood the postman that almost always dropped their letters off. He must've been in his early thirties and he had short brown hair, green eyes and seemed to always smile. Eliza smiled at him and he quickly handed him the letters before running off to the next house.
Eliza shut the door and flicked through the letters. She didn't open them as Alexander instructed her but she would always look for any sign of who had written it. Like a label on the back or a letter seal that had the family name on it or the billing company's name. Eliza found three bills, one letter from Angelica and one letter from Burr. Eliza took the four envelopes and walked through the living room to get to Alexander's study. She put them on his desk for him to figure out later. She then ripped open Angelica's letter and read it.
My dearest Eliza,
How are you? How is Alexander treating you? I really hope you answer both those questions with 'good'. Anyways, I'm coming to visit and can't wait to see you soon!
Love Angelica
Eliza was happy for her sister to come. She remembered that her boat should be coming the next day! Happy with this news, Eliza went back to her book. Hours later, Eliza finished the book, thinking about the ending. The husband of the woman had gotten drunk and had been killed by getting run over by a carriage. The woman in despair had also gotten run over when she had seen her husband laying on the road and she had rushed onto it to try to help him but got killed too. It was not the ending Eliza had expected, but it left her wondering. What would've gone through their minds as they saw their fate? How did their parents feel? Why did they get taken at such a young age? They had only been 25 in the book. There were so many questions that had been left unanswered. Eliza let her mind wander to all the possibilities the story didn't tell. This is usually what happened after Eliza had finished a book. She let her mind wander through everything and imagine different endings.
After a while, Eliza got hungry and so she got up and made herself some lunch. She had a sandwich with tomato, lettuce and ham and ate it by the fireplace. Afterwards, she went over to the piano they had in the corner of the living room. She had barely played it ever since Philip died as it brought back to many memories but today she felt the urge to let her fingers fly over the keys. She lifted the lid and blew away some dust. She really needed to clean it. She pulled the chair out from beneath it and took a breath. She then let her hands fly, creating beautiful melodies, some fast and upbeat and some slow and sad. Eliza began to sing to the melodies, letting all the words that had built up inside of her for so long come out and fall perfectly into the chords. She sung through meeting Alexander to when he was in the war to when she had asked him to go away to Albany with them and to the Reynolds pamphlet. She just let it all fall into place. (A.N to the tune of helpless)
I have never been the type to try and grab the spotlight
We were at a the ball with some people on a nice night
Laughing at my sister as she's dazzling the room
Then you walked in and my heart went boom
All night I tried to catch your eye from the other side of the ballroom
While everyone was dancing and the band was top volume
I find Angelica while we wined and dined
I grabbed her and whispered
Hey this one's mine!
Angelica stood up and walked over to you with pride
And next thing I knew I was your bride!
And then after a while you were mine but then I'm saying to you
The tempo changed to what sounded almost like a different song (A.N- To the tune of stay alive)
Stay alive
Stay alive
You seemed to be out every weekday
Never ever coming home to see me
I tried to say
Alexander, wait!
Yet you would just leave me in your wake
Nothing would make you stop
Only when you finally did you finally found out
That I was then with your son
And you were happy
Those were pleasant days but then you had to go back away
For even more days
Stay alive
The battle of Yorktown was scary for all
Even though you made it seem as fun as a ball
I prayed every day for your safe return
Meanwhile Philip came and the world still turned
You finally came home unscathed and well,
We lived happily and you began to work less as well…
The tempo changed yet again. This time to the simple melody she taught Philip when he first learnt piano. (A.N To the tune of take a break)
Un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf.
She then played a faster melody, recalling a letter she had sent to Angelica years ago. (A.N Still to the tune of take a break)
My dearest Angelica,
Tomorrow afternoon I plan on asking Alexander to go away with us to Albany
Hopefully he'll say yes and we'll all be able to go away
He may say no
Although even if he does I will make sure I try my best to convince him.
It won't be as good as you would say but you're not here yet so I'll do it alone.
And there you are an ocean away, do you have to live an ocean away?
Thoughts about you and your new life
Sometimes they get the better.
Although I'm glad you are so happy.
From Eliza
Tempo changed again. (A.N To the tune of burn)
I saved every letter you wrote me
From the moment I saw you I knew you were mine
You said you were mine?
But were you really mine?
A letter arrived yesterday
From Angelica and it said
You've married an Icarus, he's flown too close to the sun.
All of your words are obsessed with your legacy.
Your sentences border on senselessness
And you are paranoid in every paragraph
I will never know how they perceive you, you, you, you
I thought I'd erase myself from our narrative
That I'd let future historians wonder how I reacted when you broke my heart.
Although everyone knew that I'd let your letters burn.
That I'd watched it all burn
The world knew what he had done
The world knew the empty place in our bed
Was sleeping in his office instead
With only his memories.
While he thought he was mine
I'd watched it all burn
Eliza played a long ending then and as she did she felt like a weight had lifted off her shoulders. She had finally done something with all the emotions that she had been building up inside of her for years and years.
She finally played one last chord and sighed. She then heard clapping coming from behind her. She quickly turned around and saw Alexander in the doorway leaning against the doorframe with a smile.
"How long have you been listening?" She asked
"Long enough" He replied, causing Eliza to blush in embarrassment. She hoped he hadn't heard the last song, although from the look on his face he had.
"I'm happy you played it. You haven't played in ages, and to hear the beautiful sound coming from the piano, you make me so happy" He said, coming over to her and putting his arms around her neck and hugging her from behind. Eliza smiled.
"It really wasn't that good, I'm a bit rusty on it" She admitted.
"Anything that comes from you is beautiful my angel" He said lovingly. Eliza nodded. They fell into a silence which Eliza broke.
"There are some letters in your study that came earlier, also Angelica's coming tomorrow" She said. Alexander nodded
"Ok, it'll be good to see her. I'll go sort the bills out then, thanks Betsey" and with that he kissed her on the head and went into the study.
Eliza stood up from the piano, shut the lid and pushed the chair back underneath. She made a mental note to dust it all later. She went over and tended to the fire again which was dying down. She carefully threw the wood in and jumped back as some sparks flew. Luckily none touched her. Alexander came rushing out of his study a minute later although Eliza was quick to stop him.
"Where are you going?" She asked
"I have to send this letter to Burr urgently"
"Why? Is it about Theodosia last night?"
"No, It's about work stuff, he wants to meet at some point" he said fidgeting. Eliza nodded
"Fair enough, you go post it then but make sure you take the umbrella, it's pouring again" Alexander went out and Eliza followed him to the door where he grabbed the already wet umbrella.
"Ok, see you later Eliza!"
"Bye!" And with that Eliza walked upstairs. She needed something to do now and her bedside drawers were a mess. She got to her room and emptied the drawers onto her bed.
In it were lots of old letters and little trinkets. Eliza found the tangled necklace that she had been looking for for months and she found one of the brooches that her mother had given her when she moved out of the house. Eliza rarely wore it as she didn't want to accidentally break it. It was in the shape of a flower and it was studded with what Eliza presumed were fake diamonds. She sorted everything into piles of lost jewellery, letters, and completely random things. She found the letter that Angelica had sent her that had notified Eliza when she was going to London, And old letters from Alexander were among them too. It looked like Eliza hadn't cleaned out the drawer in years.
After a while she finished and she now had a nearly empty drawer. A storm had been brewing while she worked and the thunder and lightning was only getting more intense. Eliza was fine with storms but she knew Alexander wasn't. As she finished, a huge clap of thunder came and she heard the door open and Alexander yelled out
"I'm back!" Eliza went downstairs. Alexander was soaked and she rushed to get him new clothes. He smiled guiltily at her when she came back.
"The umbrella doesn't help when the rain keeps changing its direction" He said with a smile. Eliza turned around so he could change.
"Did you post your letters?"
"Only the one to Burr, the rest can wait for tomorrow"
"I see," Eliza said.
"You can turn back around now Eliza" Alexander said. Eliza did and a boom of thunder shook the window frames and lightning flashed outside. The rain then got even heavier than it had been. Eliza noticed Alexander stiffening a bit and his eyes darted around the room.
"You ok Alexander?" Eliza asked. He nodded merely.
"You are a terrible liar," She said knowingly.
"Ok, maybe I'm a tiny little bit afraid of the storm?" He said quietly. Eliza motioned for him to come sit down on the couch in the living room. They both sat down and Alexander put his head on Eliza's shoulder. Eliza then put her head on his head and they both sat quietly for a moment. Another boom and crack came again. Causing Alexander to jump a little. Eliza still could never believe it, Alexander Hamilton, the generals aide-de-camp, the treasury's secretary, was scared of storms. It proved that everyone is scared of something.
Eliza comforted him and soothed him best she could but every crack of thunder got louder and the lightning got more and more frequent. One particularly big boom made Alexander jump up and begin to pace the room.
"Good lord, will it ever stop!" He said to no one in particular. Eliza stood up.
"You're alright, you're alright Alexander, it will pass soon" she said calmly. She put her hand on his arm but he shook it away and kept pacing the room. Suddenly he jumped when there wasn't even thunder. He then yelled
"Eliza! There's water! It's rising, Eliza get up to the roof before it takes us! Why is the water black?! It's all black!" Eliza rushed up to him and it was like he was almost stuck in a memory. He shrunk to the floor and curled into a ball against the couch. He covered his ears, still caught in his memory. Eliza knelt down next to him as if she was talking to a kid.
"Alexander, snap out of it! You're fine, you hear me? We are fine" She consoled. Alexander seemed to listen and he leant onto Eliza. She stroked his hair
"Ssh, you're alright, nothing's wrong" he slowly nodded at her words until he had finally calmed down. The thunder still made him jump a bit but at least he wasn't delusional.
After ages, the storm finally got further away until only the distant sounds of thunder could be heard. They both got off the floor and sat on the couch again. Now they could properly hear each other again, Eliza spoke up.
"Are you ok now Alexander?"
"Kind of. I thought I was back there for a minute" he said. Eliza was confused.
"Back where? Nevis?" Eliza asked. Alexander nodded
"My cousin had just committed suicide and I had moved in with a foster family. They were nice and all but then the hurricane came and it was absolutely terrifying. It started out like a storm but then water began to cover the floor and it was pitch black water. I managed to make it to the roof but just as the family began to climb the ladder a wave of water knocked the children who were climbing it off and the family got swept away. I will never forget their screams as they got washed away. I could only stay there and watch it. The wind blew the roof off of the house next door and it threatened to blow me away too. The rain lashed at me and, well, all I could do was pray to not get blown off the roof. And then I remember, it suddenly went quiet. Nothing happened. It was hell one moment and then everything stopped leaving just a yellow sky. I thought I'd survived! But just before I went to get down, the peace was gone and the wind, rain, and thunder came back even worse! That moment had only been the eye of the hurricane. It was terrible because lots of people had gotten down to help their family when it all started again and so all I could do was sit and hear their screams and pleads for help. But I couldn't do anything. The worst part about the hurricane was the fact that the air would be filled with screams one minute and then the next they died out one by one. Then after what felt like hours it all stopped! Everything calmed down again but not as fast as it had in the eye. I waited on the roof for another hour or so until I had made sure I was safe. I remember that when I finally felt it was safe and got down, there were all the remaining people meeting in the town square. There were only like a third of us left. Total strangers moved to kindness though and we all helped fix everything. I remember thinking as well when I finally got a good look at the mostly destroyed town that thank goodness my mother hadn't been there to witness that horrible deed of mother nature. I will say though that ever since I have hated any storm especially big ones like that one because they bring back all of those memories and it's terrible" He finished. By the end of the story Eliza wanted to cry for him. His story was so sad! No wonder he had never told her, it was so hard for him. Eliza had known that there was a hurricane and that's why he hated storms but she had never gotten a description of it all. Eliza hugged him.
"Oh Alexander, that would've been absolutely horrible! I'm sorry you had to go through all that." She said,
"Don't apologise, It's not your fault, you can't undo it" He said sadly. Eliza hugged him tighter.
"How about we do something nice to take your mind off all this?" She said, trying to lighten the mood.
"Like what?" He asked, still sad but curious.
"Well we could make some cookies…" Alexander's eyes widened.
"Yes please!" He said happily. Sometimes it was very easy to please Alexander. They both stood up and went into the kitchen.
Once in the kitchen, they both got out the ingredients they needed. Milk, flour, eggs, sugar, butter, and most importantly, choc-chips. Eliza got out a bowl, a tray, a wooden spoon, and two spoons. She grabbed out a pot and put some butter into it and placed it on the stove top to melt. She then cracked one egg in and Alexander cracked the other. The butter melted, and Eliza poured it into the bowl with the butter. Alexander measured the sugar and poured it in while Eliza poured the milk. Lastly she measured the flour and Alexander came over and grabbed her by the waist and lifted her up playfully. Eliza squealed and the flour in her measuring cup went everywhere. They both laughed. Alexander stuck his finger into the flour bag and put some flour in Eliza's nose.
"Alexander!" She said with a smile. She grabbed a bit of flour and threw it at Alexander who laughed. She managed to measure the flour again and pour it in. Eliza then began to mix the batter while Alexander lit the oven. Once it was ready Eliza poured in the choc-chips and she had a spoonful of the batter. She filled the other spoon up with batter and gave it to Alexander. She put her dirty spoon in the sink and proceeded to start putting the batter on the tray. As she did Alexander attempted to stick his spoon into the batter for another spoonful. She gently gave his hand a tap.
"Alexander! No double dipping!" She said, This only got a smirk from Alexander who then tried to get another spoonful. Eliza grabbed his arm and they both wrestled playfully until Alexander won and got another spoonful which he ate quickly. Eliza gave him a stern look but she ended up smiling at him when he pulled the spoon out and it looked completely free of batter.
"Victory tastes sweet my dear!" He said, causing Eliza to roll her eyes and laugh. After ages of fighting to not let Alexander get yet another spoonful of batter, Eliza had all the cookie batter in the tray in balls. As she was about to put them in the oven, Alexander swiped one of the balls and Eliza laughed
"You do know that when you do that you get one less cookie right?" She said teasingly. She put the cookies in the oven and set the timer. Alexander looked genuinely shocked
"I did not know that! Sorry! Please let me have my extra cookie back!" He said pleadingly. Eliza smiled
"Ok! You get an extra cookie then" She said. Alexander looked much happier then.
When the timer went off, Eliza went into the kitchen, opened the oven and grabbed the hot tray of cookies out. She placed them on the bench and then she bent down to the oven again and blew the fire beneath it out. Alexander came in and as he was about to grab one of the cookies, Eliza swatted him away.
"Unless you want to burn yourself, I strongly suggest you wait" She said, Alexander gave her a frown to which Eliza giggled at. She set the timer for 5 minutes.
"Alright child, when this timer goes off you can have a cookie but if you have one before then you will hurt yourself. Got it?" She said
"Hang on, did you just call me a child Betsey?!" Alexander said, shocked.
"What? You can act like one!" She said in defence. Alexander's face was priceless. It was the exact face a kid would make after they got told off, proving that he could act like one. Eliza said this and Alexander laughed.
"Ok point proven then!" He said. The timer went off and Alexander was quick to snatch one of the cookies. Eliza grabbed one too and they both ate it. They were absolutely delicious. They were warm, chewy, gooey and overall just an amazing cookie. Before they knew it, the tray was empty.
The two went upstairs and into their room. Alexander lit the fireplace in there and they both sat on the bed talking. Alexander told her about his day and about how Jefferson had been strangely nice to him and how a kind Jefferson was one Alexander did not like
"It was just a weird experience, you know? Like he's rude one minute and then the next he's being all nice to be just because I picked him. It was kinda funny though because you could tell he was uncomfortable being nice to me. He kept fidgeting and avoided my eye contact which are two things he never does so it was just plain weird" Alexander explained. Eliza loved the sound of nice Jefferson. She wished she could've seen it.
"That's odd indeed! That would've been so awkward! How's Burr? How does he feel about you choosing Jefferson?" Alexander clicked his tongue.
"Well let's just say he isn't too impressed but he'll be ok, me not choosing him won't kill him" Alexander said. Eliza nodded. They kept talking until the only light in the room was from the fireplace. The clock downstairs chimed eight. Eliza felt like it was later than eight so she decided it would be best to go to sleep early. She said goodnight to Alexander who went downstairs to his study. She then went to sleep for the night.
The next morning Eliza did her normal routine with Alexander. After he left she did the housework and the day went by pretty quickly. Before Eliza knew it, it was one and so she went to the docks to go get Angelica. Eliza saw the boat docking and soon after people streamed it from the deck. Eliza had managed to get pretty close to the ship and so she saw Angelica immediately. She waved to her and Angelica waved back. Once she got off, they hugged
"Oh, it's been so long, Angelica!"
"Same with you Betsey! How's life?"
"Alright" Eliza replied. The sisters linked arms and walked back to the house. Once they were inside Angelica went straight to her room to put her stuff down. Eliza followed and Angelica stopped her.
"I'm actually really tired sis, I was seasick on the boat so could I have some alone time so I can sleep please? I'll come out later just, you know, I'm really tired" Eliza nodded.
"Of course! Take as long as you need and for all I care you can sleep until tomorrow!" Eliza said. Angelica nodded gratefully.
"Ok, thanks Eliza. See you tomorrow!"
"Sleep well!" And with that, Eliza shut the door and left Angelica alone.
Alexander came home late in the afternoon and he looked quite stressed. He rushed into his study without a second thought. Eliza rolled her eyes and kept sweeping the kitchen until all the flour was gone from yesterday. When she was done she made dinner. Alexander didn't even bother coming out until Eliza called him to eat. He came out, ate, and then went straight back to his study. Angelica was still sleeping and Eliza didn't want to disturb her so she let her stay asleep.
The evening turned into night and Alexander stayed in his study scribbling away at whatever it was he was writing. Soon it was past 10 and Eliza had enough. That man needed sleep whether he liked it or not. She went downstairs and into the study.
"What are you doing?" She asked, looking over his shoulder, it was clearly the beginning of a letter to someone and at the moment it only said 'Dear' there were pages next to him again in piles and Eliza presumed that it must be lots of unsigned or unwritten documents.
"I'm just writing a letter to someone" He replied
"Saying what?" She inquired
"Doesn't matter, what are you doing?" He said quickly. He then fired Eliza's question right back at her.
"I'm coming to tell you that enough is enough and that you are going to bed with me now" Eliza said sternly. Alexander put his hands up in defeat and he took his glasses off and placed them on his desk. Leaving the letter unfinished. Eliza was happy, she had actually convinced him! With only one argument to. They both walked up to their room and they got into bed. Eliza stayed up to make sure Alexander went to sleep and once he did Eliza did too.
Halfway through the night, Eliza rolled over and she felt the place where Alexander should've been empty. She opened her eyes and saw that he was definitely gone. She sighed deeply and sat up. She rubbed sleep out of her eyes and then looked out the window. It must've been maybe 3 or 4 in the morning? What was Alexander doing up that early? She slowly went downstairs and went straight to his study where, sure enough, she found Alexander writing something. It must be the letter he had been writing the night before. She went over to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. She tried to look at what he was writing but he covered it with his arm. She sighed
"Alexander, come back to sleep"
"I can't, sorry, I have an early meeting out of town which I must attend" He said, turning his head a bit to address her.
"But it's still dark outside" She argued quietly
"I know, I just have to write something down" He replied, and he then took another piece of paper and began to read it. Once he finished it he grabbed a blank piece of paper and began to scribble all the things wrong with the document.
"Why do you write like you're running out of time?" She said sadly. Alexander looked up and put his hand on her arm. He rubbed her arm and gave her a quiet 'ssh' to stop her worrying.
"Come back to bed, that would be enough" she said pleadingly.
"Don't worry my love, I'll be back before you even know I'm gone" He said
"Come back to sleep" She pressed again
"Like I already said though, this meeting is at dawn" He said clearly beginning to get annoyed at Eliza. She decided to give up.
"Well I'm going back to sleep. You can come join me if you want or you can stay here writing whatever it is you're writing" She gave him a pat on the shoulders and then began to walk away, knowing that Alexander had chosen to stay there. As she slowly walked away, Alexander grabbed her hand and gave it a kiss.
"I'm sorry, you are the best of wives and best of women" Eliza gave him a faint smile and left the room. She went back upstairs and tried to go back to sleep, but sleep never came. Something felt wrong, Eliza couldn't tell what it was but something felt horribly wrong. She got dressed and then went downstairs just in time to catch Alexander leaving. She quickly gave him a kiss and he pulled her back in for a longer one.
"Have a good day honey, I love you"
"You to Eliza, if all goes well, I'll be back for lunch" Eliza liked that idea, he mustn't have that much work to get through today then. But why did that kiss feel like it was their last? Eliza brushed that aside. He would be fine. He was just going to work. What harm could his work do?
