ch-2 The side of Hyrule in Termina

Link is lying down on the ground today. He decided to wear his gauntlets to hide the Triforce from Romani, though he was not very sure about Skull Kid. After the mask had taken over the Skull Kid, he had become more sensitive to magic so whenever Link used fire magic, the Skull Kid always caught him. Fortunately, he was never threatened…yet.

(A/N: Link somehow managed to recover some spells from Hyrule like Din's Fire, Farore's Wind etc. in this story. I am not adding Nayru's Love because that is way too overpowered for some cases.)

Whenever Link tried to skip his ranch work using fire or ice magic, the Skull Kid would find out immediately. In some cases, it was very annoying because it gave Romani more reason to give him additional work. He wonders what happened to the little affectionate girl who used to call him 'Grasshopper'.

As Link was lost in thought, a very familiar person approached him and screamed in his face, "HERE IS YOUR MAIL!"

The postman had increased his business range from Clock Town to all of Termina, all while maintaining his strict schedule. Because of this, he had better physical abilities than Link himself. "Yes, yes, I got it. Mail received. You may go now." The boy said dismissively. When Link didn't hear departing footsteps, he looked up and saw that the postman had vanished. 'Maybe he learned the songs of teleportation', Link thought.

Link looked the postmark and saw that it was from Dampé. The old gravekeeper only writes to Link to ask about Skull Keeta or talk about Big Poes or as he called them 'Ghost Kings', so he wondered which of the two he was going to ask him about. When Link opened the letter, he was surprised that the topic was neither of his two assumptions. Instead, it was something that confirmed his worst fears.

~~letter~~

My young friend,

I have recently been seeing changes in the graveyard. At first, I thought it was one of those brats living in Termina Field who were messing with them, but yesterday, something drastic happened! A massive grave appeared and it has strange, unfamiliar letters on it. These are the same letters you are always writing and showing me. There is also a symbol on it. It has a bird's wings with three yellow triangles, one in the top and two on the bottom. This grave is not something that could be built overnight without me noticing and hearing. After seeing that grave, I grew nervous. I thought the ghosts of the Royal Family awoke again. Yet, these letters and symbols tell me that it is even related to Ikana. I think it is something else entirely! So my friend, please come here and help me. I truly do not know what to do.

Dampé the Gravekeeper

P.S

Bring two bottles of Chateau Romani too!

Link felt all hope and peace he had gained over the 5 years in Termina drain away. His description of the grave sounded just like the Tomb of the Royal Family in Kakariko village. Link touched his shin where in the secondary timeline, he had gotten severe burns from Dampe's Ghost (Hyrule Gravekeeper) while racing him to get the Hookshot.

God, that had been a nightmare in itself! If he had ran into the flames once or twice more, he would have definitely died.

As he shuddered from the horrible memory, he saw a hand being waved in front of his face and heard a fairy screaming really loudly in his ear.

"Link, are you okay, you seem extremely pale. Did something happen?" asked a concerned Romani.

"Ya, what the heck happened to you? It was almost as if you went back too..." Tatl stopped herself. When they both had joined Romani Ranch, they agreed they wouldn't tell anyone about his adventures as it would only draw unwanted attention and hate as most would not believe him. "Anyways, what matters is your face and habits will go back to how they were before. That is not something that should happen. You promised to Skull Kid and me, right?" Tatl finished.

"Ya of course. Uh… no you guys are misunderstanding. Dampe has sent some surprising news that's why. It's nothing big. I feel like I should at least visit him though." The boy said as he went into the house before Romani and Tatl could question him further.

Romani could tell something was wrong by looking at Link. Though Romani never said it out loud, she considered Link as her best friend. She spends a lot of time looking at him and could vaguely tell what he was thinking about as a result. However, after Link read the letter, Romani felt that she did not know what Link was thinking about, which is a first for her. Ever since Link first came to the ranch, he always talked to her and answered her questions whenever she asked and the boy never lied to her, except when he comes up with excuses for getting out of work.

His current behavior leaves her uneasy as she has never seen this side of him. In the few times she had talked to Tatl, she learned that Link used to be an adventurer. Due to the numerous situations where he had to kill, he had grown a mask that hides nearly all his emotions. Working on the farm had made him relax and therefore, give up on that mask and slowly relearn to show his emotions. At that time, she shrugged it off, thinking it was all in the past. But the face Link just made truly terrified her. How could someone just close off all their emotions within seconds? What would that person have had to go through for doing that? Now, she realizes she had not seen her Link but the Link who had killed countless monsters without getting a scratch. That time he was not a monster slayer but a monster himself.

Romani shook her head, trying to get rid of her thoughts. These thoughts would not keep the ranch running and whatever Link read in the letter was his business not hers.

Tatl was worried for Link when they travelled. Link only showed his emotions when sleeping, otherwise he didn't even say anything. Only when he started coming to the ranch after stopping the Moon did he start to open up. She did not get it. What was written in that letter that made him act like that. Tatl too, shrugged it off for the day and went towards where Tael and the Skull Kid were playing.

The moment Link entered his room and closed his door, he threw off his gauntlets and stared at the back of the hand where the Triforce glowed brightly. Its bright, golden light had not waned the slightest bit. "I should go to sleep and start packing tomorrow. Nothing is going to come from worrying." He said to himself as he walked up to his bed and promptly fell face first onto the pillow.

In the morning, Link had packed his stuff, wore his tunic, equipped his mirror shield and the gilded sword. As he was going to stable to pick up Epona, he ran into the two most expected people there; Romani and Tatl.

"I have come to send you off. Knowing you can probably take care of your skills but try to stay out of trouble." Romani said as she handed Link food and milk for his joourney.

"And naturally I am coming with you! We have been through so much together. Of course, you can't go without me!" Tatl piped up.

Link smiled, "Of course, let me get Epona and we'll be on our way."

Once Link mounted Epona and Tatl flew to his shoulder, he rode Epona out of the Ranch. As he was departing, he looked back to see a smiling Romani waving goodbye. He smiled back and continued on his trek into the Termina Field.
