Chapter 129: Past and Present

Kouri Island, Hoenn

8:53am, 22nd September 2006

The night after the first round was always a restless one, both for those who had won and had second round battles looming over them and those who'd been vanquished at the first hurdle. It was often restless for spectators too as anticipation for the next stage of the league built up still further.

"Couldn't sleep at all," Mia grumbled, prodding her cereal with her spoon.

"I was wondering why it took you guys so long to get down here," said Will.

"I'm surprised you're not out there with them, Will," Hannah said.

Will swallowed a spoonful of cereal. "I went out with James for a little while, but everyone wants to do their own thing today."

Well, that was understandable for Nicola and Richard. They were each other's next opponent. Training together seemed nonsensical to say the least. In fact, the two of them had scarcely spoken at all since the line-ups had been announced the previous evening.

"So, James's battle," Mia said, steering the conversation and her own thoughts away. "What time is he fighting today?"

"I think it's the same time as yesterday," Will said.

"And he's up against this 'Danny' guy?"

"Yeah." Will glanced over at the entrance. "Although I guess you can ask him about it yourself."

Mia turned and spotted James entering the canteen. "Oh, James!" She waved to him.

"Hey." He came over and sat with them.

"Not training?" Hannah asked.

"We needed a break," said James. "We were getting too stressed."

"It's an important battle, right?" Mia asked.

"Well, every league battle is, really." James leant back in his chair. "But yeah, I really want to beat Danny this time."

"Was it a close battle last time?"

James was silent for a second, a frown crossing his face. "I should've won. We were down to our last each. I had the type advantage too, but…" He shook his head. "Now's my chance to make up for what happened last year."

"Have you seen Richard or Nicola?" Hannah asked.

"No." James shook his head. "I think they want to be alone."

"You aren't training with them?" Mia asked.

"I mean, how could I? If I spent slightly more time training with one than the other, am I picking favourites?" There was no happiness in the weak smile James gave her. Mia realised that he was just as distressed by the line-up as the others were.

"It's tough on you too, huh?" Hannah murmured. A cloud settled over the table.

"A-Anyway, let's talk about your battle!" Mia tried to sound more upbeat. "Have you decided who you're using yet?"

"Not yet," said James. "I was going to double check what Danny's team is and then make my choice based on that." He glanced at the clock. "On that subject, I should get back to training. I'll catch you guys later!"

12:04pm, 22nd September 2006

Even with distractions, there was no escaping the sombre mood that hung over the group. Mia, Will and Hannah sat awkwardly between Richard and Nicola, who only spoke to each other in overly careful tones, as if the other were made of glass.

As James and Danny stepped out onto the ice arena below, all five in the stands were silently screaming for a good diversion from their current worries.

James, for his part, had finally managed to get free of that cloud. The final preparations for his own battle and the anticipation of a chance to avenge last year's defeat had cleared his mind. As he gazed around the stadium, he noticed that there were more people here than in yesterday's battle. Not a surprise considering that there were fewer battles to watch now, but he'd have appreciated them more if it didn't seem like Danny had a majority of the support.

"This is a Hoenn League second round battle between Danny Kent from Lilycove City and James Burton from Pallet Town!" the referee announced. "This battle will be fought using a three-on-three single format and will be over when all three of one side's pokémon are unable to battle!"

As James pulled out his first poké ball, he saw Danny doing the same across the arena. He took a deep breath, trying to push the noise of the crowd out of his mind. He needed to focus on the here and now, whatever was happening on that arena and how to control it.

"Begin!"

At the referee's word, both trainers threw their poké balls.

"Go, Raenok!"

"Go, Sceptile!"

James's heart jolted as the pokémon who'd ended his Kanto League challenge materialised on the far side of the ice. He hadn't expected Danny's ace to appear so soon, though he supposed it didn't make much difference in the end.

He shared a quick nod with Raenok. "No holding back, Raenok. Just like we practised."

Raenok jumped forward, skidding slightly on the ice. As he landed, he opened his mouth wide and unleashed an ear-rending sound that seemed to claw its way into the minds of anyone hearing it. Even as it started to die down, he slammed one foot down onto the ice, shattering it and sending a cluster of boulders flying up from underneath. With a leap and a powerful kick, he launched a tumbling mass of debris directly at Sceptile, who was still holding his head as the screech reverberated around it.

Everything happened in a flash.

One moment, Sceptile was directly in the path of Raenok's attack. The next, he'd suddenly shot to the side, leaving the boulders to tumble to the ground and shatter harmlessly. As he slid to a halt, the four yellow spheres on his back started glowing.

"Cross Chop!" James called. There was no mistaking the preparations for a Solar Beam attack.

Raenok shot forwards, his hands glowing dark red as he crossed them in front of him. As he slammed into Sceptile's front, he tore his arms apart and unleashed all his energy through his fists. As he dropped back to the ground and caught his breath, he watched Sceptile stumble back and then recover. A heavy blow, but not quite the knockout they were hoping for.

Though wincing in pain, a smirk crossed Sceptile's face. The orbs on his back lit up as he opened his mouth wide.

What happened next took James a few seconds to put together, as a blinding flash of light forced him to shield his eyes. The concentrated beam from Sceptile's mouth had seared its way through the air, but it had seemed like smaller beams were firing from all directions.

Raenok had been blasted back, scorched by the intensity of the light which still bounced off the icy ground towards him. As he staggered back to his feet, he seemed dazed and disoriented, as if struggling to pick things out amid the whiteout.

James suddenly realised that Danny and Sceptile had taken advantage of the arena. With the ice reflecting the light, what should have been a single beam had instead become a web extending out across the arena, all the while dazzling Raenok.

He and Raenok needed to strike back before their opponents had a chance to launch another attack. "Brick Break!"

Raenok stumbled forward, then found his feet and slid across the ice towards Sceptile. He brought one fist back, glowing dark red, as he approached. Sceptile simply watched him, also tensed. As his opponent drew in range and started throwing a punch, he suddenly lunged to the side and slashed at the mankey's flank with a leafy blade.

Raenok cried out and threw himself back. As the two pokémon separated, the spheres on Sceptile's back started to glow once more.

It struck James that he and Raenok were now trapped. Sceptile was fast enough to intercept their attacks, especially now that Raenok was weakened. Ideally, he'd prefer to switch to the defensive and intercept Sceptile's attacks, but it seemed doing so would just lead to another web of Solar Beams heading their way.

"One final try, Raenok!" James called. "Cross Chop!"

As Sceptile continued charging sunlight, Raenok steeled himself and charged once again. Having found his feet again, he approached faster than last time. Just as he was about to strike, Sceptile suddenly shifted to the side, a blade extending from his arm.

Raenok was ready though. Dropping his crossed arms, he spun and threw a punch directly at Sceptile's raised arm, knocking him back and eliciting a cry of pain from his opponent. He made to throw a follow-up punch, but Sceptile had already recovered. He lunged forwards, passing beneath Raenok's fist and slashing upwards with Leaf Blade.

Raenok was sent flying up. Then he crashed down to the ice below with a thud and the sound of cracking ice.

"Mankey is unable to battle!" the referee announced as Raenok's icon on the big screen turned dark. "Sceptile is the winner!"

"Yes! Great work, Sceptile!" Danny called.

"Urgh." James frowned as he returned Raenok to his poké ball. Almost effortlessly, Danny had forced him right onto the backfoot. He'd just have to come back even stronger in the next bout. Things would be different this time. He reached for his second poké ball and threw it out. "Go, Charka!"

Charka growled loudly as he materialised on the icy field, eyes fixed on the opponent he'd lost to the previous year. This was as personal for the charmeleon as it was for James.

"Crunch!" Danny ordered.

Sceptile gave a nod and rushed forwards towards his new foe. As he raced over the ice, some of it melting thanks to the sun and his own attacks, he focused solely on the charmeleon, watching for any sign of a counter attack. If he saw as little as an ember, he'd be ready to dart clear and attack from his blind spot.

He tensed as Charka opened his mouth. Yet it wasn't fire, but smoke which spewed forth. A thick black cloud filled his vision and he lost sight of the charmeleon. Still, he didn't need to see Charka, nor hear his trainer's warnings, to know what was coming next.

He sprang to the side as the expected jet of flames cut through s smoke, carrying a heat wave with it. He landed upright and spun back in the direction of his opponent, raising his arms and looking around.

For a few seconds, there was nothing. Then a red form suddenly lunged out of the gloom, eyes ablaze, and slashed across Sceptile's extended arms.

"Fire Spin!" James called as Sceptile yelled in alarm.

"Pull back, Sceptile!" Danny shouted.

Sceptile wrenched himself back, pulling away a split second before a fiery vortex started raging in the place he'd been standing. As he put some distance between himself and Charka, he passed back out of the cloud of smoke and glanced up at the blue sky above. He tensed himself, focusing everything on drawing sunlight into his body once again.

Charka erupted from the cloud of smoke, stray flames trailing from his mouth. He fixed his gaze on Sceptile as the orbs on his back started to glow once again. With a quick breath in, he spat out a fresh cloud of smoke, this one concentrating into a mass around his opponent.

Sceptile let out a startled cry as the smoke rolled over him. He felt the sunlight flowing into him slow to almost nothing as darkness settled around him. Desperate, he made a leap to the right, tearing through the smoke and back into the sunlight.

Only to find Charka waiting for him.

Just as Sceptile landed, Charka shot forward and slashed upwards across his chest. Sceptile staggered backwards, dazed, while the charmeleon anchored himself again and took a deep breath. He expelled a tongue of flames that wrapped and curled its way around Sceptile, rising upwards in a burning spiral and pinning the grass type in place.

The noise in the arena had suddenly reached a fever pitch and, while both pokémon could hear their trainers' voices, they couldn't pick up what they were saying. Not that it mattered much. Charka knew exactly what to do, and Sceptile? Well, Sceptile couldn't react to orders even if he heard them.

Taking a final, deep breath, Charka opened his mouth and fired a burst of flames into Sceptile's fiery prison. There was a bright flash and a roar as the flames merged together into a single pillar of burning light rising high into the sky above the stadium.

As the vortex spiralled faster, it started tearing itself apart. As quickly as it had formed, the fire burned out and the pillar dissipated, scattering embers to the wind. At the epicentre of the vortex, Sceptile lay on the ground in a pool of water melted by the inferno. Scorched and blasted by the intense heat, he made no effort to get back up.

"Sceptile is unable to battle!" the referee announced. "Charmeleon is the winner!"

James clenched one fist in triumph as he watched Sceptile's icon darken. Revenge for the Kanto League, though they still had a way to go before they achieved it completely. Charka had managed to get through the bout with no damage, effectively putting James and Danny even.

Across the arena, Danny had finished recalling Sceptile and pulled out his next poké ball. "Go, Camerupt!"

James frowned as Camerupt materialised on the battlefield. Not that he wasn't expecting Danny's choice to be influenced by Charka, but it was always disappointing to know that he faced an uphill battle, especially in a match as important as this.

"Use Swords Dance!" he called to Charka.

As Charka started a frenetic dance to pump up his fighting spirit, Camerupt started lumbering forwards, slowly at first but steadily gaining speed. Just as he was about to smash into Charka with a powerful tackle, the charmeleon made a last-second dodge to the side. Skidding to a halt, he tried to fire himself back, only to slip on the ice and drop to his knees.

"Flamethrower!" James called. Any moment's hesitation might let Camerupt take advantage of the opening. They had to be quick.

Charka spewed out a jet of flame that spread outwards as it flowed. Before it could reach Camerupt, it met a jet of flame coming the other way. There was an explosion as the attacks collided, sending an intense heatwave blasting out across the arena. Both pokémon drew back in the face of the inferno, even though both were fire types.

"Slash!" James ordered.

As the fire started to clear, Charka fired himself forward again. He rushed Camerupt from the side and tore along his flank with such force that the bulky pokémon almost toppled to the side. Charka span around for another attack, this time leaning in even further. This time, Camerupt was ready and held his ground before turning and slamming Charka back with powerful stomp of his front hoof.

"Use Smokescreen!" James called. Though Camerupt wasn't landing many attacks, each one he did would be powerful. It would be easier to wear him down with hit-and-run attacks with the help of another smokescreen. And besides, James was concerned – it didn't seem as though Danny and Camerupt were hitting them with their full force yet.

Charka jumped back from the melee and landed on a patch of slush. He curled his lip as the water touched his foot, then opened his mouth fully to expel a fresh cloud of smoke.

As the black smoke filled the air around the two pokémon, James pondered what to do next. It seemed as though Slash was their best bet, though they could also try whittling Camerupt down with Fire Spin.

"Alright, use Fire Spin!" James called.

Charka darted through the smoke and opened his mouth to begin his attack.

"Earthquake!"

There was a loud thud, followed by a violent shaking as ice cracked and shattered. Charka cried out as he was hurled from his feet and slammed down hard on the disintegrating surface of the arena. The shaking subsided, but only for Camerupt to come careening out of the smoke at full speed. He smashed into Charka and trampled him underfoot, pinning him in a watery crack in the ice. A second, final Earthquake hurled the charmeleon into the air before crashing down once again.

"Charmeleon is unable to battle!" the referee announced. "Camerupt is the winner!"

James held up Charka's poké ball to recall him and took a deep breath.

The battle wasn't over yet. Charka had put a real dent in Camerupt, who was already starting to flag. Frustratingly, if they'd managed just a couple more attacks, they might have managed to topple him. Still, he had one final pokémon left to put on the field.

"Go, Nulin!" he called, calling out that last pokémon.

Nulin let out a rattling cry as he sprang from the ball and took to the air above the blasted, shattered arena. He rode on an updraft from the remaining heat rising from the battlefield and fixed his gaze on Camerupt.

Using him was a gamble, James knew that. Defeating Camerupt would be a quick and easy victory. The problem was what would come after. James knew that Danny had a manectric, the perfect counter for Nulin, but that he'd used that pokémon in his first round battle. He was really hoping that this meant Manectric was still resting, but in the worst case scenario… well, Nulin wouldn't stand much of a chance against him.

As that thought washed over him, James was suddenly assailed with a horrible feeling that he'd made the mistake that would lose him the battle. He gave his head a shake to try and clear it. He'd made his decision. Now he had to live by it, whether it led him to victory or not.

"Supersonic!" he called to Nulin.

Nulin nodded and opened his bill. A piercing, rattling sound blasted downwards with such force that James could almost mistake it for Muro's Hyper Voice. Everyone in the stadium shielded their ears as Camerupt staggered about, his mind jumbling up as the soundwave penetrated.

Amid his confusion, he still managed to fire a jet of flames upwards, but they just missed Nulin and instead billowed harmlessly into the sky. The pelipper dove down as Camerupt continued blasting flames towards him before skimming the ground and racing to the side.

"Hydro Pump!" James called.

"Flamethrower!" Danny ordered.

Both pokémon fired at the same time. A deluge of water blasted from Nulin's bill and tore through the air with the crashing inevitability of an approaching tsunami. Camerupt's flames struck it but were simply blown to the side as the water crashed on. There was a colossal splash as the blast hit home, showering water all over the centre of the arena and throwing Camerupt back with a heavy crash. The round was already over.

"Camerupt is unable to battle!" the referee announced. "Pelipper is the winner!"

As Camerupt's icon turned dark, there were just two pokémon left on the big screen: Nulin, and Danny's unrevealed final pokémon.

James found his breath catching in his throat as he watched Danny recall Camerupt. His heart thumped as he waited for his fate to be revealed. How would the final round end? With a chance at victory, or an inevitable defeat?

"Go, Flygon!"

James let out the breath he was holding. He wasn't using Manectric! With this, James and Nulin stood a chance.

In fact, now that he thought about it, didn't they stand a really good chance? He wasn't especially familiar with flygon, but he thought they were both dragon- and ground-type. Wouldn't that leave him at a massive disadvantage against Nulin's Ice Beam? As bad of a disadvantage as Nulin would have had against Manectric?

It suddenly struck James.

Danny hadn't seen Nulin's full move pool. He didn't know about the danger he'd stumbled into. But then, wasn't a flygon still a bit of a risk against a water type anyway? What was Danny's game plan here?

"Hyper Beam!" Danny called.

Nulin squawked loudly as he was struck with a powerful beam of energy that knocked him clear out of the sky and send him tumbling to the ground.

"Whoa!" James exclaimed. So that was what Danny had planned: one final show of brute force to finish the match. He winced as Nulin struck the ground, hoping that the damage wasn't too severe.

Much to his relief, Nulin flapped his wings about and struggled to his feet. Then he beat the air with his wings and lifted off again, flying slightly lopsided, but still flying nonetheless.

"Ice Beam!" James called. Flygon was a sitting duck. They'd be mad not to take advantage of it. Seeing the look of realisation and horror on Danny's face filled him with a sense of satisfaction.

Nulin fired a frozen beam at Flygon, who made a feeble attempt to move. The beam ploughed into him, instantly forming an icy shell around him which then shattered with enough force to knock him down to the ground.

"One more, Nulin!" James yelled.

"Get out of there, Flygon!" Danny shouted.

Another white beam pierced its way through the air, but Flygon shot forwards just in time.

"Dragon Breath!" Danny ordered.

Rats, James thought as Nulin spun to the side to avoid the regal blue flames. He'd been hoping Danny and Flygon would go for one more Hyper Beam that would then leave them exposed again. He wasn't worried though. He knew that he finally had Danny on the backfoot and it would simply take a little bit more effort to finish the battle.

"Aerial Ace!" he called as Nulin dodged another attack.

The pelipper let out a squawk and plunged towards Flygon, who instinctively lunged to the side. As Nulin jerked around to home in on him again, he fired off another blast of draconic flames at his opponent. However, as Nulin twisted to the side to avoid the attack, there was nothing left to stop him striking his target.

Flygon cried out as he was knocked to the side. In that moment of weakness, as he was focused on recovery and not evasion, Nulin swept around and opened his bill one final time.

The icy beam struck true, sending Flygon plunging to the ground with a final crash. For a few moments, there was silence in the arena. And then…

"Flygon is unable to battle!" the referee announced as Flygon's icon faded to black. "Pelipper is the winner! All three of Danny Kent's pokémon are unable to battle, so the winner of this match is James Burton from Pallet Town!"

We did it! James made no effort to contain the smile now spreading across his face. The big screen above had changed to display him and his team, and the reality of his victory washed over him like the heat of a fire in the middle of winter. This was still only the second round but vanquishing the trainer who'd ended his Kanto League hopes still felt like he'd risen above the trainer he'd been last year.

Nulin clicked at him as he landed on his shoulder.

"Thanks for clinching the victory there, Nulin." James reached up to ruffle the pelipper's plumage. "Couldn't have done it without you." He reached down to the poké balls of his other two pokémon. "All of you."

With Nulin still on his shoulder, he walked around the side of the arena to meet with Danny.

His opponent seemed a little despondent as they approached each other, but he perked up for the handshake. "Good luck in the next round," he said. "I'll be cheering for you!"

"Thanks for a great battle." James smiled as they grasped each other's hands. "I really enjoyed it."

And then they parted and walked off in opposite directions to the applause of the crowd. It felt to James a little like he'd just closed the book on a chapter of his journey, even with more battles still to come.

His heart sank slightly as he cast his gaze into the crowd in search of his friends. Friends who, soon, would be facing off against each other.

And there we are, James has managed to avenge his loss at the Kanto League and move on to the third round. I must admit I enjoyed writing this battle, even if I personally don't think Danny is that interesting a character. It was a good opportunity to have a battle that meant something to James personally, more than it just being another stepping stone through the league.

We're jumping back over to Livvi's Johto Scrapbook tomorrow, with Richard and Nicola's battle coming on Thursday.

As ever, I appreciate any comments you have on this chapter and feel free to join the Discord server.

Until next time!
