Chapter 4 - Consulting the Crone
Lady Jessamine pinched the bridge of her nose. She loved Melody but now the girl has come to her to get permission to return a Grim, of all things to this plane of existence. The girl had to go home and find a nest of Grims and bring them back with her. Yes, it was understandable that she was protecting her family. Her brothers did kill their brother.
"Let me make sure that I am correct. You want me to consult as you and your circle bring back a Grim? A Grim that your brothers murdered? And said Grim is their brother?" she asked pointing towards David.
"Yes, my brothers took a life that did not need to be snuffed out. They were not bothering anyone. They were asleep. Also, I can guarantee that with his resurrection that the circle will get another protector." Mel said.
"Alright. We will have to wait for Samhain." Lady Jessamine spoke firmly, "I will only do this if and only if there is a binding ceremony. I will protect my circle's."
"Yes, my Lady." Mel nodded her head.
They all stood and left Lady Jessamine's office. David held her hand as they left. It would be almost two months before they could call back Marko. School would start the next week and exactly 8 weeks later Marko would be returned to them. Paul would be so happy to have his best friend back. Marko and Paul were as thick as thieves and had been lovers at one point. They were still close enough that ending the physical relationship had not severed their friendship. The sexual relationship they had shared is why Paul felt Marko's death more acutely than David or Dwayne.
The couple walked around London for a bit and ended up at the book and record shop that Mel and her friends frequented. There David met the only male friend Mel had and he was also the only make in the circle. He was also Johanna's twin brother, Daniel. They were fraternal twins. While she was light haired and peach kissed skin with hazel eyes with a willowy frame; her twin was crystal blue eyed with hair so black it was like velvet and pale skinned. He had a slight yet strong frame. He was also Mel's first lover. David was not happy about him being in her life still but there was not much he could do about a circle member. He liked the boy though and that made it hard for him to have an icy front with him.
They browsed records and talked about books. This was a tame pace of life, and it reminded David of his adolescent years in London. He would go around the stalls with his younger sisters and discuss books with them as he helped them with fabrics. He missed them. Max stole that life from him. With a shake he brought himself back to his present. Melody offered him a to-go cup of tea. He accepted. He loved tea. That was one thing about him that the boys did not know about him. Tea was actually his drink of choice.
The sky lit up with lightning and thunder crashed. It was time to go. They parted ways and got to the bus stop and on the bus before the rain began to pour. It took a bit for the bus to get to stop that was near the Churchill residence. This was going to be their last night there. They would all be moving into the apartment closer to the school. Even Sadie. Her parents were more than happy for her to pursue a relationship with Paul. And David had the feeling that Daniel may become a part of the household as would Reagan. They were going to need a bigger place to live.
As soon as they arrived, they were accosted by Sadie at the front door. Apparently, while they were out the Solicitor and the head of the Powers family had arrived to meet David and Paul. Mel sighed and rolled her eyes. She just wanted a hot bath and to get into some comfy clothes and a hot cup of tea. David just did not want to deal with it but deal he must. They made their way to the sitting room. When they entered the room the Churchill family greeted them warmly.
"Good Lord." a woman said, "It is true."
"Lady Mildred, what is true?" a stiff looking man asked.
"It is uncanny. This young man is almost an exact replica of one of my husband's ancestors. He is without a doubt a Powers." she said and opened the manilla envelope on her lap, "Look."
She pulled from the manilla envelope a stack of photographs. She flipped through them, and they noticed that someone had taken photos of hand painted portraits. They must be looking for physical attributes that would be shared heavily in family members that stuck closely in the gene pool, like most aristocratic families. She suddenly stopped and turned a photograph around for everyone to see. David knew that photo. He had posed for it for hours. It was a painting that his family had commissioned to be sent to the woman his parents had betrothed him to.
"This is my husband's ancestor. His name is David William Powers. He was supposed to assume the Dukedom after his marriage to Lady Elizabeth Churchill. But he disappeared and was presumed dead. After his disappearance his mother was pressured to have another child. She did indeed have another son, and that is why my husband is a Powers." Lady Mildred said.
"I see." David said coolly.
"Your mother?" she asked.
David, with the help of Melody, explained the story that Grandpa Hughes had spun for his and Paul's background. Sadie had even brought down the supporting paperwork as evidence of the claim. Grandpa Hughes's connections were very thorough. With the portrait matching David and then all the overwhelming paperwork there was no doubt in anyone's mind that they were Powers descendants. Lady Mildred informed them that she would let her husband know the progress when he returned to England. He had been away in Italy on business. She assured them that he would be very welcoming with them into the family. She thanked the Churchill family profusely and invited them to a dinner party. They graciously accepted.
As they were leaving, Mel let Lady Mildred know that David and Paul would be moving the next day to an apartment in Westminster. She explained that they were finishing up their educations at Westminster School. They would be there if her husband returned early and wished to meet with them. She gave the address and bid Lady Mildred a wonderful evening and safe travels. After they departed Mrs. Churchill called for some tea. It was more than time to wind down from the excitement of the unexpected visitors.
