What's Love Got to Do with It—Tina Turner
(I've Had) The Time of My Life—Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes
Can't Fight This Feeling—REO Speedwagon
As Tina Turner croons about a sexual relationship without love, the hottie and I skate around the rink. He sets the pace and I easily match it. There's no bodily contact between us, and I wonder if I want there to be.
"If we're going to couple's skate," I start, catching a glimpse of the Cabbage patch crowd glaring from the sidelines, "I should probably know what to call you."
"Is that what we're doing?" He sways from side to side, eyes on me the entire time.
"You're the one who joined me."
"So I decide?" He lifts a brow and I shrug.
He slows the pace and reaches one hand out, threading our fingers together before doing the same with the other. There's still a comfortable space between us, but it feels considerably more intimate from jump.
Tina Turner fades into The Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing, which has a slightly faster tempo after the slow start. We pick up the pace and soar past other pairs on the rink. It's like our bodies don't need to be told how to interact, they know this dance on a cellular level.
"You're really good at this," he says after a minute.
"I'd be even better if I knew the name of my skate partner."
"Are you saying I'll get a skate reward in exchange for my name?"
"Try me."
"Edward," he breathes after a beat. "Call me Edward."
"Hi, Edward." My smile is bigger than I'd like it to be, but I can't help it. "I'm Bella."
"Do I get my reward now, Bella?"
I can't tell if he's serious or not, but I decide it doesn't matter. I may not know what to do in other areas of my flirting game, but on this rink, I'm a goddess.
I release one of his hands and spin so I'm skating backward, too. I match the motion of my feet to his and back up against him, bringing his hand around to rest across my stomach. The song changes to Can't Fight This Feeling and chills race across my skin. In my short life, this is absolutely the greatest moment so far.
His breath blows against my neck as we sway in a slow, sensuous, side-to-side motion. I hold up one arm and let the beat of the music flow from my body to his. For the entirety of the song, it feels like we're the only two people in the building. Toward the end, his low, scratchy voice sings along with the verse.
My life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you
I've been running 'round in circles in my mind
And it always seems that I'm following you, girl
'Cause you take me to the places that alone I'd never find
He trails off after that, and I don't know what to make of it, or if I should make anything at all. It's not like he was staring into my eyes and making a declaration, but the words felt specific enough that he could mean me.
Or maybe he just likes the song?
I waste way too much time wondering, so much, in fact, that the song ends altogether, and the lights go up. I'm disappointed it's over, but glad it happened in the first place. He doesn't rush away, either, almost like he wishes there was more.
With a deep sigh, he murmurs, "I guess that's it."
We've slowed to a crawl as the DJ rattles on about the all-night rules. "Seems so."
"It was awesome," he says, releasing me and flipping around so he can see my face. "There's nothing sexier than a girl who knows her way around the rink."
My smile spreads without my permission. "Even if she's just a kid?"
His smile matches mine. "Even then."
I blink and he's gone, racing off to the carpet and disappearing around the corner.
To whoever thinks this isn't a "realisitc" 80s timeline, I lived this bitch and loved it hard. You don't get to negate my experiences because yours didn't match up :P
Raise your hand if you couple skated like that!
See you tmr :)
