Chapter 188 Jake

They sat on the bed watching TV, eating from the cooler, settling themselves for sleep after all the driving. They passed out during the second episode of a crime drama and woke up five hours later chuckling at their positions in bed. They had to wait to go to the hospital for visiting hours at 4pm. Dean surprised the shit out of Sam by saying he was going out for a jog. After much back and forth arguing they drove to a local park and jogged together with no competition involved. Sam insisted Dean jog slowly to start with and Dean retorted that he wanted to wake his legs up not send them to sleep. He had been using the running machine at home but his legs still felt tight running on the grass. He stayed within Sam's rules only because he was feeling sick again. It seemed to be still coming in waves but further apart, thankfully.

Sam dragged Dean into the shower with him after Dean insisted on doing push ups and sit ups in the hotel room, leaving it at 50 only due to dizziness more than a sore stomach. They went out to lunch at a local Chinese restaurant which was served on kitchen tables but okay due to the spacing of the tables and the fact it was so small their knees bumped naturally together. Back at the hotel they lay on their bed for a couple of hours, just resting , before heading to the hospital.

Once there Dean led the way to the second floor, ignoring the desk, and going to room 9. He ducked his head around the corner as he knocked and found 4 curtained off areas. Sam followed him in as he called for Jake. "Hey, Jakey, your candygram is here."
"Hey Dean", called a voice down towards the window on the right.
Dean had the cloth bag over one shoulder and Sam had the other bag behind him.
"Hey Jakey." Dean greeted the young man.
"Hey Dean, nice to meet you."
They shook hands, Dean introducing Sam. Jake moved up the bed with his legs hanging over the edge. Dean sat next to him and Sam sat on the only chair. Jake was normally shy around older people but they were making him feel at ease straight away.
"How are things, buddy?" Asked Dean.
"Not too bad." Jake gave Dean a soft smile.
"Got another dose tomorrow I hear."
"Yeah, I've had some tests, that's why I'm here. The last couple knocked me around."
"All the upchucking doesn't help that's for sure." Dean shared a sad moment with him.

Dean sighed. "So how did you meet, George?"
"On a chat room for patients. He's a nice kid. It was nice of him to put us together. He likes to do that now that he's feeling up to it. He told me all about you so I knew it was you when you called out."
"I hear he's getting close to remission." Smiled Dean
"Yeah, he is. How about you?"
"Just this week," Dean said softly, "It's your turn next." Dean put an arm softly around Jakes back getting the feeling he could use the support.

Sam watched in amazement as Dean and Jake chatted about what Jake wanted to do in the future, hobbies, his home life and family. Dean made sure to include Sam in the conversation. After an hour they got onto bikes for a while and Dean finally gave Jake the bag of gear he had for him.
"Sooo, …helmet and goggles. Your mum said you wanted a new helmet. I hope this suits or I can change it out."
"Wow, its great!" Jake's face lit up. "Can I take a photo and send it to mum?"
"Go for it."
Amazingly the helmet fitted well when he tried it on. Once the photo was sent Dean handed the gloves over. "These are heated." Dean showed Jake the heat buttons.
"Wow, heat in a motocross glove. The techs getting great these days. These are brilliant." Jake put them on.

Dean smiled happily and winked at Sam. Sam checked them out surprised at the new technology as well. To Sam's surprise Jake and Dean chatted about bike technology for another half an hour before Dean bought out the half dozen books he had for him. Jakes mum had done a great job in letting Dean know what books he wanted. He loved the books so much he gave Dean a big hug. Jake also hugged Sam as a friend of Dean's. Sam clicked that Dean had not said Sam was his brother. Dean took the bag of books from Sam and asked Jake if there were anyone around that would like a book.

Jake was happy to take Dean and Sam to the common room and they took the books around to the youths of all ages in the room. Sam smiled at Dean and Jake looking like a couple of Santa's elves. Dean was letting Jake distribute the books as he wanted, happy just to hold the pile. Sam didn't miss that Dean introduced himself as a friend of Jakes not a cancer survivor, as Jake was introducing Dean. Eventually visiting hours finished and Jake and Dean exchanged phone numbers and left the hospital with a new friend to keep in touch with.

Sam drove back to the hotel where they arrived to Sam's phone alerting them to a call from Bobby. Dean frowned as his phone dinged at the same time. Dean took his call in the bathroom as Sam took Bobby's. Dean came into the main room and saw a frown on Sam's face.
"What's up?" He mouthed at Sam.
Sam pulled his phone from his ear and pressed the speaker button. "We're on speaker, Bobby."
"Hi Dean, how's remission treating you?"
"So far so good."
"Sam was telling me you had the easiest hunt in the universe to get started."
"Ha, yeah I guess."
"Well, this next one might be the opposite. I need you boys to be my scouts for demon activity in Chihuahua."
"As in Mexico?" Dean asked surprised.
"As in Mexico," Bobby agreed, "Lots of demon activity, we think, and since you're technically the closest we just need you to go collect data."

Dean crossed his arms and looked at the ceiling. He was staring so long Bobby asked if he was still there and Sam moved toward him.
"You okay, Babe?"
"Ah, yeah. So, where is ground zero?" Dean laid a hand on Sam's arm.
"We think they have come up from Mexico City two weeks ago. The signs are there but our confirming data is slow at coming through. We have been in contact with hunters but they are short of boots on the ground so reliable intel is hard to come by if you know what I mean."
"I'm guessing it hasn't escaped you that I am technically Catalan."
"It would sure help to have someone on our side when and if the shit hits the fan. It might make a nice holiday." Dean could hear the grin in Bobby's voice.
"How did you guys go with the spell you were working on?" Dean looked at Sam as he spoke.
"With Sam's help its almost done. Sam knows what bits and pieces we need. I'm gonna stay and work on it then I'll head down. So all we need is a passport for Sam. A real one or close to it would be good."
"Why real?" Sam asked.
"Well the passport you used in Canada is expired. The Mexican government is having a crackdown on fake passports so it better be good. " Bobby mumbled.

Sam looked deflated.
"Actually, I can help with that."
