Final part: Peace
In the meeting hall in Jackson. Johnny and Mike were standing in front of the other leaders. Accept for Leo and Mike who were in their own city's. They had just finished explaining what had happened on their mission with Jacob and what happened with Owen near the end.
"Is he still alive," Maria said.
"The fireflies are keeping him locked up, Mels going to stay in contact with us to keep an eye on him," Johnny said.
"She helped with the cure so shes good," Dylan said looking at the others.
"How are you feeling about this Johnny?" Leo asked.
"I thing they can change and after all there are probably people from our own groups who used to be fireflies," Johnny said.
"Hes right about that," Derrick said.
"Plus Jacob was never a fan of Owen and the people working with him didn't know everything that happened," Tommy said looking at Maria.
"What about making all of us fireflies?" She asked.
"Some of the people who are coming with me left the fireflies after what happened," Mike said speaking.
"So from now on their just going to be an allied group," Johnny said.
"Alright will leave it at that for now," Maria said, "But I think we need to have group talks every month so we all know were doing the right thing,".
"Got it," the others said.
"Wait does this mean I have to drive out to Jackson every time were having a meeting," Leo said.
"Will take turns, so we can check out how each of our homes are doing," Dylan said.
"Alright everyone head home, looking forward to your wedding next week Mike," Maria said smiling as everyone got up to leave.
Johnny and Mike were the first two out, "So hows the planning going so far?" Johnny asked as they were walking in the direction of his home.
"Well she found a dress she liked and the bars letting us have a reception," Mike said letting out a breath, "It's a lot of work but Im glad were having it out here," he said smiling.
"You going to stay long after," Johnny said.
"Were going to stay a day after the wedding, then were going home to organize homes for everyone," Mike said as they noticed Rick and his girlfriend walking by. They waved at each other before Johnny stopped in front of his house.
"You and Ellie going out tonight," he said.
"No after the long trip a night at home sounds great," Johnny said before the two of them shook hands. Johnny then went inside, "Ellie, Elsie," he said. He then looked confused when he didn't see Elsie.
"Johnny you back," Ellie said from upstairs.
"Yeah wheres," he said before looking surprised to see his wife standing at the top of the stairs. Wearing only a towel.
"Married this long and I can still make you look like that," she said smiling.
"Yeah well this doesn't happen often," Johnny said, "Wheres Elsie, I thought you were going to pick her up after we got back?" He asked.
"Shes with Joel, told her mom and Dad needed some time to rest," Ellie said, "Now I have the shower running and I could use your company," she said. When she reached the bedroom she laughed when she heard the hurried footsteps. Since the bathroom was attached to their room she threw her towel off before going in.
Then a few seconds later she smiled when she felt Johnnys arms around her. Much later after more then a shower. The two of them were lying in bed with only the sheet covering them.
"Not to ruin them mood but how did the meeting go," Ellie said.
"Their going to have monthly meetings, make sure everything is done right," Johnny said with his hand on her back, "Sounds like I might have to make some trips," he said.
"Yeah I know, but luckily you can fly," Ellie said before kissing him, "But since we know we have no more missions, you know what that means,".
"I think I do," he said smiling at her before kissing her on the lips. She smiled before wrapping her arms around him.
A few months later Johnny was at the barbecue again, "Careful Mom," the birthday girl Elsie said helping her mother down the steps. Ellie was now showing she was pregnant with their second child.
"Elsie Im still fine to walk on my own," Ellie said smiling.
"She's practicing to be a big sister," Abby said from her chair with Mike standing next to her. Like Ellie she was also showing.
"Can we please not talk about this," Lily said from next to Dean.
"Feeling nervous," Steven said walking over with Rachel and Sam.
"How can I not be, I heard the stories of Ellie screaming when she had Elsie," Lily said.
"How do you think I felt, I was standing outside the door," Maria said as she sat down with her drink.
"How can you drink that in front of me," Lily said before picking up a glass of water, "Ellie, Rachel the first night you have free were having a girls night out," she said.
"Oh can I come," Elsie said.
"Sorry kiddo its for grown ups only," Ellie said.
"Don't worry Elsie, we will be looking after your little brother or sister," Johnny said.
"Okay," she said before going to sit down.
"Here let me take over," Joel said standing next to the grill.
"But this is my barbecue," Johnny said.
"Which I can do to so I can sit down next to Ellie," Joel said laughing and Johnny sighed before taking the chance to sit down next to Ellie and Elsie who were next to Abby and Mike.
"Grandpa Joel took over," Elsie said looking at the barbecue.
"Well from what I hear he taught your father everything," Jessie said sitting across from them.
"So he was dads teacher," Elsie said, "Does that make him better," She said.
"Its not a competition Elsie," Ellie said noticing the downed look on her husbands face after what their daughter said.
"I tried my best," he said.
"Well Joel can cook a mean barbecue," Tommy said sitting down with Maria.
"But you said Dads was great," Elsie said.
"Yeah come to think of it Joel took some left overs the last time he was here," Maria said smiling.
"Well I guess their both great," Elsie said smiling.
"You have a point there," Mike said, "Abby," he said noticing his wife looking down at her stomach.
"I was just thinking, never thought I could have a life like this," she said.
"I know that feeling," Johnny said sitting back, "Back when I was kid I thought would spent my life fighting," he said before looking at Ellie.
"But I found something better," he said.
"We both did," she said before they gave each other a quick kiss.
"Ew," Elsie said.
"Yeah I don't need to see you two do that to," Sarah said.
"If their kissing that means they really like each other," Joel said smiling at the embarrassed look on his brothers face.
"Like how you hug Jessie at night," Elsie said calmly.
"Well um," Joel said looking at Jessie for help but she was just smiling.
"Come on lets eat," Steven said as he and Johnny got up to carry over the rest of the food.
"Okay how about a toast," Mike said holding up his glass, "Johnny its your house so say something," he said.
"What me," Johnny said.
"You're the host," Tommy said smiling and Johnny sighed.
"Alright," he said before standing up and Elsie clapped. "Well first of all I want to wish Elsie a happy birthday, congratulations," he said and Ellie hugged her as she smiled.
"Also thanks to everyone who could make it," he said. The members of his team along with Darrens wife. Tommy, Maria, Sarah, Joel, Jessie, Mike and Abby.
"I know we have been through a lot, we've fought some tough battles and lost people we care about," he said, "But what's important is that we never gave up, for the people we love and care about."
"The world may never me the same, but we can work hard to make it better," he said holding up his glass.
"Well said," Mike said smiling. The rest just smiled, agreeing with him. They then began eating and pleasant conversations continued well into the day.
Years later
In one of the large buildings in Jackson. There was a sign that read high school over one of the doors. Students began walking out and one young woman resembled one of the town heroes.
"That was so boring," Elsie said from next to her friend Sarah.
"Yeah history felt like it went on forever," she said.
"Hey Elsie," a young man said walking over to them.
"Yeah whats up," she said looking confused.
"I was wondering if you want to see a movie with me on Saturday," he said looking nervous while Elsie looked surprised.
"Uh yeah sure," she said brushing her hair back.
"Great see you later," he said before walking away.
"Someones got a date," Sarah said smiling when the bell from the next building went off. The sight over the doors read middle school.
"Quiet, Im lucky to have one after what my dad did in the first year," Elsie said remembering when she got into an argument with Jesse and Dinas son. It lead to an argument outside the school between their parents.
Ellie didn't interfere even when Johnny flew into the air while threatening him. After that none of the bad kids went near Elsie. Though some boys were nervous knowing who her father was.
"Bye James," a female voice said from nearby.
"Bye Carly," James Grayson, Elsies little brother said waving at his friend.
"Ready to go home little brother," Elsie said.
"Sis, how long have you been there," he said. While Elsie looked like her mother James looked more like their father. Accept for his eyes.
"Come on lets head home," she said before they started walking home.
"Good luck with telling your dad about your boyfriend," Sarah said making the older sibling brush.
"Wait you have a boyfriend," James said looking surprised.
"Not now and not word to grandpa," Elsie said looking serious while James smiled.
"Wait till mom and dad hear about this," he said.
"Say anything and I tell Carly you like her," Elsie said making him look embarrassed.
"What I," he said unable to say anything more.
"Forget dad, wait till aunt Lily hears about this," Elsie said since Carly was Dean and Lilys first child. She then started running towards their home.
"Hey I wont say anything just don't tell her," he said chasing after her. When they were old enough Johnny had trained both of them to defend themselves. So they were both really fast.
"You two be careful," Bill said walking by.
"Thanks Bill," Elsie said while running. James just waved as they got closer to home.
"I win," Elsie said at the front door.
"No fair you got a head start," James said almost out of breath.
"In here you two," Joel said from the kitchen.
"Grandpa," they both said running to the kitchen. Jessie was also there and was helping get dinner ready. Even at his age Joel was still able to move around a lot.
"How was school," Jessie said.
"Boring and PE isn't till Friday," Elsie said as she sat the table.
"Well what about history," Joel said.
"That was the boring part, besides dad already tells me enough," Elsie said.
"Yeah but its important to know everything else," Joel said.
"We learned about the battle of Boston today," James said as Jessie put down the plates.
"Did they mention how me and Joel were reunited," Jessie said.
"Im sure their stories aren't filled with romance," Joel said.
"No but they said something about a rescue mission and a helicopter crashing," James said sitting down.
"Oh yeah Dad was in that crash," Elsie said sitting up, "Wait you were on that mission to right?" She asked looking at Joel.
"Yeah, I was the person who went out looking for your father after it went down," Joel said.
"So Mom wasn't with you," Elsie said.
"No she was taking care of the hostages, we got separated and needed to find a new way out," Joel said.
"Dad had throw him," Elsie said looking at James.
"Which I wasn't happy about and neither was your mother when I told her about it,".
"But she was more relieved when he made it back," he said.
"I heard someone talking about the battle of Seattle and how a lot of people weren't there," James said looking confused.
"That was the only battle your mom wasn't in, she was worried sick most of the time your father was gone," Joel said as he started putting food out.
"Dad left mom," James said looking surprised.
"No he didn't, he only left for a short amount of time," Elsie said.
"Your mother had to stay behind because she was carrying your big sister at the time," Jessie said looking at James, "But trust me your father wasn't all happy to go without her,".
"Okay," James said.
"But then nine months later the two of them got one of the most precious gifts ever," Joel said making Elsie smile knowing what he meant.
"How did they meet, in history they mention they travelled with you," she said.
"I asked how they fell in love and they just said they saved each other," James said.
"That's because they did," Joel said. Smiling at the memory of the two of them when they were around Elsies age. The two of them standing close and watching the giraffes.
"Grandpa, you okay," Elsie said bringing him out of his thoughts.
"Sorry," Joel said.
"How about we tell the story of how Joel met your parents," Jessie said.
"Can we?" James asked.
"Sure, but first you should know that I met your first and then much later I met your father," Joel said as he began to tell the story.
Far away in Seattle a grown up Johnny Grayson put his parents fireflies tags on, "Okay will talk to you soon, tell him will be home in a two days," Ellie said from the front of the bed holding a radio.
"The kids okay," Johnny said as he put his jacket on.
"Yeah, Joel was telling them the story of how we met," Ellie said as she tied her hair back.
"Guess we better prepare for questioning when we get back," Johnny said.
"Im sure will be fine," Ellie said before kissing him, "Now how about a lift," she said pointing out the window.
"Really," he said looking confused as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
"What have I gotten to heavy," she said before he picked her up.
"Not a chance," he said smiling before flying them out the window.
"I just don't want to put up people in the lobby and don't worry I have the room key," Ellie said.
They then flew to a large building. Two men carrying assault rifles lead them to a large room with tables that could sit two people each.
"Johnny," Mike said walking over.
"Hey thanks for having us," Johnny said as they shared a hug.
"Abby not coming today," Ellie said.
"Shes watching Conner and Lisa, Lisa wanted to do some training today," Mike said, "But she wants you two to at least visit once," he said.
"Don't worry will make time for it," Johnny said.
"Leader of the rescuers and representative from Jackson," Leo said giving him a hug as well.
"Hey Leo," John said when Dylan walked over and two of them hugged as well.
"Every month we do these," he said.
"Be glad fuel isn't our major issue every month," Mike said.
"Well luckily we don't need to resort to horses yet," Johnny said when Jacob walked in with his wife and two guards.
"Any news on Owen," Mike said when he walked over and shook hands with Johnny and the rest.
"No, we also had an escape attempt last month," Jacob said.
"I thought your place was secure," Ellie said.
"One of the guards had to leave for an emergency, luckily Mel stopped him in time," Jacob said.
"Mel stopped him," Ellie said.
"Their son visited the next day, he hasn't made a move since," Jacobs wife said calmly.
"Alright, since were all here lets get started," Johnny said before they all went to go sit at their desks.
"Let the united meeting begin," Mike said. United was the name of the meeting they held once a month. They mostly discussed trading supplies and how the others groups were doing.
But a few years ago they sent a team to deal with a large bandit group. The rescuers which was the name of Johnnys team was sent to take care of it. They were the most trusted since they helped bring everyone together.
Even now they worked hard to keep their homes safe. But Johnny would always think about a photo he kept at home. His family sitting together on the couch. He would continue to fight so that those he cares about could continue to live peaceful lifes.
