Raphael x FemReader
It's been six months since Raphael saved Y/n and it has been the happiest six months of her life. Her and Raphael fell into a routine of sorts, he'd wait for her to get off and would either follow her from the rooftop or force her to let him carry her when she could barely walk more than a block without trying to stretch her legs or rub her calves. Recently though, he was offering to carry her home damn near every other night, using the excuse of being able to get to her place quicker so he could eat. She had an inkling that it wasn't the only reason but who was she to question his logic? It was sound in her mind. They saw each other about three times per week, sometimes more, sometimes less but each interaction was welcomed by both parties. Y/n has become a positive in Raphael's life, she was his and his alone, he didn't have to share her with his brothers. Talk about refreshing.
With this newfound routine came some…complications. Y/n had developed a crush on the red banded terrapin and every time they were together she wondered if he could hear her racing heart rate. Y/n has been caught eyeing up the large bara like a bitch in heat, but he would always make some flirty comment and they'd fall back into their rhythm. Then there was Jamie, he hadn't been introduced to the large brute because Y/n wasn't ready to risk losing Raphael. Even since that first night where Raphael was almost seen by Jamie, they have done everything in their power to not have that happen again. She didn't want Raphael to feel uncomfortable, even if she didn't quite understand his discomfort with the small child. Knowing them both, she imagined they would become as thick as thieves. Maybe in the future? For now she was content in having someone she cherished dearly, all to herself. He was more of a man and she was falling for him every time they met up. She was slightly ashamed that she felt like a love-struck teen who was head over heels for the star football player. Looking at Raphael was an absolute delight. She admired everything about him, it was obvious he trained hard for his body. The muscles of his arms and thighs were well defined and vacant of any fat content. His shoulders were broad and led to bulging biceps that were larger than her head. She loved being wrapped in them and she's happy that he has become comfortable with her touches. Y/n hadn't realized how touch starved she had become, not like gentle grazes and small hugs, no; she missed the feel of arms wrapped around her torso, keeping her close, tentative swipes across her hips or shoulders, the gentle caress of a thumb against her cheek. It was all thanks to Raphael. Not only was Raphael attractive, he was kind, understanding and honest. She appreciated his blunt nature and how it always led to some quick banter and ending with boisterous laughter. Y/n hasn't laughed this much since Sara had passed and she couldn't be more grateful. She was brought from her thoughts as she jumped to the sound of her phone vibrating against the countertop.
Fireball: up?
Y/n smiled down at her phone, wiping the soapy bubbles from her hands before typing back at lightning speed. Glancing at the clock she realized that it was only eleven o'clock, right on time, she thought.
Y/n: waiting on you, ya big lug
Raphael grinned at Y/n's message before tucking his phone back into his belt. He knew that she was up and around, he was only a block away and could see the lights on in her apartment. It was the first week in December and the air was getting colder and temperatures were dropping day by day. Raphael, along with the rest of his brothers, despised the cold. Despite them not being cold blooded like normal turtles, the cool temps seemed to seep into their bones and irritate everyone. During these colder months crime would take a break until it got closer to Christmas. But this year, Raphael couldn't find it in himself to complain about the cold too much because of Y/n. She had traded her usual attire of shorts and baggy tees to leggings, long socks and hoodies. He liked that about her, she was natural and she always seemed so relaxed around him and he had to admit…it was nice. With a grunt he landed on her balcony and watched the grin cross her face before she came to meet him at the balcony door. He cherished her smile and he'd never confess to her (or his brothers) but he had secretly snapped a pic of her smiling late one night and it was now his screensaver.
Standing in front of him, she couldn't hide the large smile that burned her cheeks. He smiled down at her lifting a six pack into view before ruffling her hair and stepping around her to head towards the kitchen.
"There's room on the bottom shelf," Y/n called back over her shoulder as she adjusted the pillows and blankets all around the living room. Tonight they had planned to watch The Dark Knight Rises that was recently added to Netflix. They didn't get to do this often due to both of their schedules but she had the next three days off and planned this the second she was approved for time off. Turning to call to him again she faltered, clutching the blanket in her fists as she gawked at the sight before her. There he was, a massive wall of strength and shell squatted in front of her fridge. Despite his position, he was still incredibly massive and watching his arms flex while he dug through the fridge tempted her beyond belief. Time to indulge a little… Y/n inched towards him as he deposited the remaining glasses of beer, the sound of glass tinged against the glass shelf. Y/n peered over his shoulder, bringing her hands to rest against the lip of his shell, dipping to place her lips just to the right side of his head, grazing along his mask before doing her best batman impression, deep and breathy.
"No miracles, no mercy, no redemption…" She bated, knowing he would know every word. They bonded over their mutual love of any and all that was Batman.
"No heaven, no hell, no higher power. Just life…" He continued, she was melting at the sound of his batman impression. His deep gravelly voice sent shivers through her body and enveloped her core. Y/n could feel the rumble of his words through the perch she had along his back. Adjusting her grip along his shell, her fingers dipped slowly and traced the skin where his back fused to his shell. She could feel him shudder, as if waiting for her to finish what she started.
"Just…us." Y/n tried to keep her voice deep but faltered and when she said 'us' he felt her breath blow against the sensitive flesh just below his jaw. A string of giggles left her before letting him go to stand, making her way towards the cabinet to get the popcorn ready. He was frozen, the fridge door still open as he looked over at the curvy woman to his left.
"I ordered pizza, one pepperoni, and one meat lovers." Raphael watched her every move as she talked to him. He didn't understand how someone so…amazing could exist. How someone so beautiful and kind, accepted him and unknown to her, was his reprieve from the monotony of his day to day.
The rest of their night continued as planned, pizza was delivered and covered by Raph despite Y/n fussing over having him pay. Raphael simply waved her off and said he got the money from a buddy who owed him. That peaked Y/n's attention but decided not to push, at least not yet…they had a Batman movie to watch anyway. The movie was amazing, both having already seen it before led them to quote and mimic the characters on the screen. Y/n realized that Raphael really did have a good Batman impression. Honestly, in her opinion, Raphael's version was way sexier and she's dreamt of that voice more than she'd ever admit. One of her most recent dreams was similar to the night that he had saved her, but he used his Batman-voice and it ended with them getting a bit…frisky in that dark and dank alleyway. Oh my! Y/n could feel a blush rise from her neck to her cheeks as she remembered that dream. But, thank God, she was saved by an explosion and Raphael's booming voice which distracted her and they fell back into their commentary of the movie. Y/n had also learned that he was a Vin Diesel fan and she was already planning a Fast and Furious movie marathon in her head.
As the movie came to an end, they both sat in silence for a few seconds, taking in the movie in its entirety. Stretching, she, with the help of Raphael, cleaned up their pizza mess and the empty beer containers before settling back on the couch. The night was still relatively young and she knew that Raphael wasn't planning on leaving just yet because he grabbed two more beers from the fridge before sitting down. Y/n remember the question she had wanted to ask him earlier but didn't when she looked at the pizza box that was set on top of the trashcan that was ready to be taken out tomorrow. Despite trying not to push, she wanted to learn more about him. She couldn't help it, and asked away.
"Your buddy?"
"Yeah, s'names Casey, good dude, owed me back from drinking all my beer," he shrugged as if it was nothing, but to Y/n it was everything. He was opening up more about himself and she couldn't stop herself from keeping the conversation going.
"Haha, what else can I know about you?"
"What ya want t'know?" He took a swig of his beer, propping a large foot atop her coffee table. All pizza was gone and put away and they were both piled high with blankets and pillows. Raphael was comfy, but knew that he's been wanting to open up to Y/n more and knew that if they continued this…he would like for her to meet his family.
"Okay…are there any 'rules' before I embark on my own version of a Spanish Inquisition?" Y/n chuckled, her hands still raised as if in surrender after bunny-earing the word "rules."
"None I can think of," Taking another swig he wondered if he'd regret saying that. Too late.
"Alright…" Y/n shimmied in her spot, turning to face him, sitting cross-legged and wrapped in about three blankets. She's adorable. He couldn't help it, she had her trusty 'burrito' blanket wrapped around her shoulders and draped over her head like a hood.
She took advantage and asked all the questions. About his family, how he came to be, his brothers, Casey, how he became a vigilante and so much more. He took it all in stride, he was honestly surprised that she had waited this long to bombard him with questions but figured it was because she may not wanted to have known. That thought alone made him falter a little…What if she waited so long to ask because she didn't think she'd see me again? What if I am only entertaining her because she's too nice to ask me not to come back? Similar thoughts flooded his brain and he finished yet another beer. Three down.
Unbeknownst to Raph, Y/n picked up on his slight change in demeanor, she sensed that he was starting to push her away so she intervened. She started opening up more and more about herself hoping that he'd catch on and know that it was okay to trust her. It turned out to be the right move because the conversation started to be more than one way and Y/n was amazed with everything about him.
"Raph…can I ask you one more question?" He lifted a brow in her direction, his honey-amber eyes burned through her, causing her to lick a swipe across her bottom lip. She watched as his eyes dropped to follow her movement before meeting her eyes again. Throughout her interrogation she had scooted closer to him without realizing. Her knees pressed into his thigh, his arm dropped over her knees. Glancing down she watched as the muscles in his forearm flexed as he fiddled with the bottle in his fingers. Untucking her fingers from her cocoon of blankets, she brushed against his arm, tracing the scars she found, swearing there were new ones every time she saw him. That realization made her sad and she wondered about the stories he could probably tell her about his experiences with the dark underbelly of New York City. But, she quickly became distracted waiting for his answer and continued to draw her imaginations into his leather-like, pebbled flesh.
"Sure," how could I say no? With the way she regarded him with such care, her touch gentle as she traced shapes into his skin. Was it possible to burn from the inside out by just touch alone? He swore he was about to find out with how hot his blood ran. He had noticed that she scooted closer to him throughout their conversation, so much so that her knees braced against his thigh. He felt as though a hole had burned into his skin by each knee-cap. He took a risk and laid his arm gently across her knees earlier and she hadn't flinched or moved away, she did the very opposite which got his mind reeling.
"Do you trust me?" Y/n cursed herself for how small she felt like she sounded. What the hell kind of loaded question is that? Ugh, you really suck Y/n! She swore to herself in the third person and continued to busy herself with tracing abstract shapes into his skin. She followed the grooves of his scales, tracing the valleys and watched as they spread, mapping out his entire body. What she wouldn't give to start at the top of his head and trace a valley all the way down to see where it'd take her. Shaking herself back to reality, lifting her head, breath caught in her throat. He was looking down at her, gaze piercing but she couldn't read his expression. His eyes were bright, but his facial features were blank, there was no emotion and she worried that she just royally fucked up. Her overactive brain shut down when she watched as his eyes softened, burning brighter if possible and watched as his body shifted on the couch. His hand moved to brush against her fingertips, holding them in place as he moved them atop his thigh. The air became heavy, and silent, the only sounds were their soft breathing, eyes flicking back and forth as if searching for an unspoken answer.
Of course he trusted her, if he didn't he wouldn't have become so attached to her in these last six months. He never wanted her to question his trust again, hearing it sent a pang in his chest and so he decided right then and there that he was about to risk it all. Raphael wasn't sure what his heart decided until he found himself moving on instinct. He shifted, leaning closer, his eyes never leaving hers as his bulky frame seemed to loom over hers on the small couch. He silently cursed as the couch whined in protest from his body shifting but he watched as her eyes lit up, and wait…was she leaning in too? The dim lighting of the living room, the quiet murmurings of the T.V and the distracting smell of F/S (Favorite Scent) wafted in the air. Raphael was nervous, not sure what the fuck he was thinking or even doing but it couldn't have been all bad by the way that Y/n was looking at him. They were much closer now, her weight shifted onto her knees and her free hand lifted to cup the edge of his jaw, tickling the sensitive flesh there.
"Y/n…," He wanted this, whatever was about to happen but, the fear of rejection echoed in his head as he tried to give her a way out. Instead, he felt the way her thumb brushed along his jaw and ended a breath away from his bottom lip. Her eyes darkened, dropping to watch her thumb trace the edge of his bottom lip. He couldn't stop the hitch in his breath, is this real? Not another dream? Raphael refused to move, fearing that he'd scare her away and the past six months of friendship would shatter before him. He couldn't handle that.
Hearing Raphael say her name, she knew she was already too far gone. His voice was soft, deep and held so much care and caution all at once. This behemoth of a man had stolen her heart and filled a space she hadn't completely realized (or admitted) was missing. He was it, she wanted him to know how she felt, this wasn't some silly crush…it's gone beyond that at this point. She wanted to dive in, and by the way he was watching and responding to her made her believe he'd drown with her. No hesitation. No question. They were there for each other.
Y/n moved to break the delicately placed line of their friendship by joining their lips together but, before she could take the plunge, a movement out the corner of her eye stopped her and she froze. Raphael picked up on her sudden awareness and proceeded to curse under his breath. He was a fully trained ninja, how could a five year old kid sneak up on him? Oh, that's right, he'd been too distracted by the gorgeous woman who was pressed into his chest, her lips a breath away. Groaning out and mentally face-palming, he ducked, thinking, thank god his brothers didn't know, they'd never let him live it down.
"Mommy?" Y/n and Raphael's eyes locked, widening in unison as Y/n slowly shifted to gaze at Jamie over the back of the couch.
"Yes baby?" Y/n cooed, moving slowly, stretching her legs, unwrapping from the pile of blankets that fell to wrap around her waist. Her eyes never left the tiny bundle that was looking between her and Raphael. She wasn't very religious but prayed that Jamie would be patient and kind to her guest.
"Who's that?" Raphael heard Jamie ask as he watched Y/n squat down to the little boy's level. She patted the boy's head before gesturing a hand in Raphael's direction.
"He's…my friend…" Y/n wasn't sure if that was the proper way to introduce him but it'd have to do for now. She chanced a glance at the large terrapin that was still sitting on the couch looking at her. The look he gave her sent chills through her body and a tinge of heat to her core. She loved when he looked at her like that, it made her feel all giddy and an absolute mess inside. Did he know that he affected her like this? Could he feel the same after what had almost just happened?
At the mention of his existence by the little boy, his initial thought of trying to remain as stoic and unmoving as possible didn't work. Then at the mention of Y/n regarding him as her friend brought a small crook to his mouth. Way more than 'just friends,' beautiful. Shaking his head, a smirk spread across his face before he sent a wink in y/n's direction. Yup, I'm fucked.
"What's his name?" The boy's question threw Raphael for a complete loop, there was no screaming, no tears, just honest, innocent curiosity. He decided to turn and peek down at the small boy on the other side of the couch. He didn't want to startle the young boy so he moved as slowly and quietly as he stood.
"Hey squirt, name's Raph," He tossed the young boy a small smile before making his way around the couch, squatting down about six feet away from the boy. Raphael sent a glance towards Y/n to gauge whether or not he was doing the right thing and he watched as a smile broke across her lips before she nodded for him to continue.
"I'm not a squirt, my name is Jamie…how do you know my mommy?" The small child crossed his arms and quirked an eyebrow in Raphael's direction.
"She's my…friend," Raphael locked eyes with Y/n once again, and he could have swore that her eyes widened before becoming even brighter. His heart rate picked up at that. He turned back to the little boy who had leaned against Y/n's shoulder as she began to rewrap the blanket around his tiny shoulders. Raphael has never been this close to such a small child before, let alone ever talked with one. Cute kid. He watched as lil' Jamie leaned into his mom's ear and whispered something that made her give a small giggle before still loud enough for Raphael to hear.
"Do you want him to be your friend?" She asked, Jamie looked at the large turtle-man and nodded his head three times before making a small step towards Raph. He wasn't sure what to do, he looked towards Y/n for some guidance and she simply nodded at Jamie and made a gesture with her hand to Raph, indicating that he just needed to let it happen. Jamie walked two more steps before stopping, clutching his blanket to his chest before reaching back to grip his Mom's hand. Y/n let out a quiet laugh as she slid across the living room floor on her knees just behind Jamie as he began to make his way towards Raphael. The large bara controlled his breathing and made no indication that he was going to move, not wanting to frighten the kid.
The air had a tension yet it wasn't from fear, more of the unknown. Y/n was intrigued by how this night was panning out and Raphael couldn't believe he was talking to a small kid that hadn't yelled, screamed, cried or did whatever kids do when they get scared. Raphael waited with bated breath as the kid took the last step to stand between his squatted knees. Still clutching his blanket, Jamie let go of his Mom before lifting his hand to poke Raphael's snout with a small "boop."
Y/n watched and couldn't help the large smile that spread across her face. Jamie just 'booped' Raphael the way she boops him before tucking him into bed or kissing his forehead. That's a good sign…right? Her uncertainty was quelled when Jamie began to play with the red mask tails before she saw a surprised look pass over Raphael's face. The little boy was now touching Raphael's cheek and it was at that moment that Raphael knew he'd lay down his life for this tiny family. He felt his heart rate beat ten-fold as his golden eyes flicked between the boy and Y/n, realizing (not for the first time) how happy he was. How truly happy he was in this moment. Y/n was just smiling, watching the interaction unfold, she knew the second that Jamie touched Red's face that everything was going to be okay. My two favorite boys.
Y/n traced along the grain of her floorboards as Jamie and Raphael were sucked into each other's company. It was an endearing sight that brought a smile to Y/n's face. But, this meant that she and Raph would need to sit down and have a talk about a few things now that Jamie was brought into the picture. Y/n was more at ease than she was earlier but she wanted to know what was going on in Raphael's mind. She just kept picturing him diving behind her curtains and out the balcony door that first night six months ago to hide away from her five year old. Despite the fact that he was currently ruffling Jj's hair and calling him, "lil' squirt," Jamie's adorable laugh filled the apartment. Y/n has never been as happy as she was at this moment. She'd risk the world for these two. That truth terrified her in the way that this was by far from 'normal' circumstances but…she knew, watching as the two in question laughed together, it was totally worth it. Fuck normal.
The rest of the night continued with laughter, marshmallow smiles and airplane rides. Jamie and Raphael had become thick as thieves. They bonded over their love of hot chocolate and marshmallows. Raphael surprised her by how gentle and loving towards Jamie. Y/n couldn't stop her roars of laughter as she watched Raphael stuff his face with marshmallows before breaking into a huge smile and Jamie squished Raph's cheeks between his tiny hands. The laughter that was pouring out of her kitchen had her cheeks hurting with all the smiles. This moment was one for the books and she never wanted to forget it. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone before angling it towards the two boys. Jamie was sitting on the island while Raphael was leaning forward from the sink so that Jamie could reach him. Raph's eyes were crinkled closed as he smiled with a mouthful of marshmallows and Jamie continued to giggle as he poked at Red's cheeks. Uncontrollable laughter left Jamie's little face red with happy tears, his favorite blanket forgotten on her kitchen floor. She'd send that pic to Raph later.
But, unbeknownst to them, their precious moment was being watched from the rooftop across the alleyway. A pair of burning blue gems glared into the balcony window as he watched his brutish brother laugh with a little boy and a young woman.
Leonardo had become more and more suspicious of Raphael for the past few months, more-so than normal. There were fewer fights between the brothers but what bugged Leo and the rest the most was how Raphael seemed to be pulling away from the team. Michelangelo was the first to realize that Raph was leaving the lair almost every night before patrol or would disappear on the way back. Mikey tried to get Raph to open up but he'd always push him off and mumble something about imagining things. That interaction led to Leonardo knocking down Casey's door asking if he's been out with Raph playing vigilante and when Casey confessed to Raph bailing on him the past few months, Leonardo became increasingly worried. Would Raphael actually leave the team? Leave his brothers? Had he found a way to live and survive away from everything he has known? The doubt and slight guilt was undeniable. As the leader, it was his duty to make sure that his brothers understood their roles, prospered in them and remained a strong unit both on and off duty but this…this was new. This time it felt more real that Raphael was actually going to leave. Which was why Leo made Donnie track Raphael's cell and led him to perch against this rooftop looking down at his immediate younger brother. Leo's been here all night, right after his late meditation session with Sensei he set out to find Raph and bring him home. But out of everything he thought Raphael would be out doing, this was certainly not on the list. Leo had watched as Raph and this unidentified woman ate, watched a movie, talked, and almost kissed…? Leo hated to admit but he doesn't remember the last time that Raphael had looked as happy as he does right now. His mouth was stuffed with marshmallows as a young boy played with his face. Leo sighed,
"He'd make a good dad," Mikey suddenly appeared beside Leo, dropping his legs over the edge of the building as he secured his hoverboard back into his backpack. Leo quietly regarded his youngest brother before continuing.
"Did you know?" What meant to be a question came off as tight and commanding. Mikey stayed silent, watching as his red-banded brother laughed in the small kitchen across the alley.
"Only for about a month…Donnie knows too, has for about five months." Leo couldn't believe what he was hearing. His brothers knew that Raphael was sneaking out to be with a woman and a kid for months and no one thought to tell him?
"How are we supposed to be a team if we insist on keeping secrets," he exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air as he stood to pace across the rooftop.
"Because we knew you wouldn't approve. Mikey wanted to tell you but I thought it'd be best to wait for you to find out on your own." Donatello appeared from around the rooftops shed, zipping up his cargo pants before snapping his suspenders back into place.
"Great. I am the leader of this team yet I am the LAST to know about this. Has either one of you wondered if she's a danger to us and our existence? Ever stopped to think that it could be a cover and she works for the Foot…" Leo was quickly cut off as Donatello interjected.
"I've already checked her out, her name is Y/n, L/n. She's an ER nurse and has a five year old son named Jamie. He is not her biological son, she was his godmother but then assumed custody when his birth parents were killed in a car crash a few years ago. She has no other family in the city and his parents' families have little to no communication with either of them. There's a woman who does babysit Jamie on late nights but she is an elderly neighbor who likes to write complaints about the neighbors cat." Donnie rambled on as he flicked through the tablet strapped to his arm. Leo looked at Donatello incredulously but he should have known that Donnie would do a full I.D pull on this mystery woman.
"Yeah man, give us some credit. Donnie knew she wasn't a threat and didn't want to intervene. We followed Raph, what, two months ago?" Mikey looked towards Donnie who nodded his head 'yes' before Mikey continued.
"We saw how relaxed Raph was, dude, I've never seen him like that before. They are like, best friends!" Mikey shouted out at the light polluted stars.
"Well they're more than friends I'd guess." Leo mumbled, but his comment did not go unnoticed by his younger brothers.
"Oh? What you mean…" Donatello was now regarding Leo, his hand frozen over the top of his tablet. Michelangelo looked at his oldest brother with piercing eyes and a vibrating smile.
"Th-they almost kissed…I think." Leo fell off before ducking his head, instantly feeling guilty for letting his brother's business out like that. Leo is a gossip at heart…so is Raph, fight me.
"You think?" Mikey pushed, swinging his nunchucks as he rounded on his eldest brother, "Describe it for us bro! How was it almost?" Mikey's grin was contagious but Leo's stoic nature didn't falter…until Mikey repeated his question for the fifteenth time in five minutes.
"Okay, okay!" Leo groaned, but before he could continue, Mikey interjected. With a gasp he covered his mouth,
"He didn't burp in her face did he, dude!" Clearly Michelangelo's overactive imagination was getting the better of him. Even though it was something that each brother could envision happening if Michelangelo ever got a girl to want to kiss him.
"No Mikey, he didn't burp in her face," Leo swore that his eyes were going to get stuck if he rolled them any harder.
"They were on the couch and she was against his chest, hands on his face and was about to kiss him but the boy caught them." Leonardo shrugged, crossing his arms nonchalantly as if it wasn't HUGE news that a real, HUMAN, WOMAN about kissed their grumpiest brother.
Mikey turned back towards the woman's apartment, and saw that Raphael had the small boy Jamie, right? In his arms and spinning him around like the kid was superman. Michelangelo couldn't help the smile that was plastered on his face before he elbowed and winked at Donnie who was witnessing the endearing sight. Leo was standing back, regarding his brothers but also watching as Raphael spun around the small apartment. This is all so…new Leonardo thought, and he was quickly getting overwhelmed over the sight. He knew, echoing Mikey's words earlier, that yes, Raph would be a great dad.
Leonardo was broken from his thoughts by Mikey turning and running straight into him.
"What the hell Mik—,"
"Raph! He saw us!" The fear in his baby brother's eyes was clear and Leo knew that this wasn't good.
"Donnie…"
"We have a 23.000004% chance that he didn't see us, Leo." Donnie confirmed as each of the brothers froze at the sound of a balcony door opening.
"Go back to the lair, I'll deal with Raph." Leo strained, cracking his neck, rolling his shoulders before standing his ground to wait for his hot headed brother.
"Nah brah, you're stuck with us," Mikey stated as Donnie nodded in agreement.
Alright, let's get this over with, was the last thing Leo thought before Raphael now stood atop the bricked edge of the roof, his large shadow looming over his brothers in the moonlight. They each felt a chill, not from the brisk, December air, but from the look of anger in their brother's eyes.
Shit.
