Chapter 37- Dream

Earth-1

John Constantine walked back to his place after having finished yet another exorcism. Things like that were basically just second nature for him, considering he was the best demonologist detective in the entire world, and perhaps the Multiverse, with only some doppelgangers of his, like the Earth-167 doppelganger, matching him in that department.

By now, his magical senses were attuned to a lot of things in this world, and could sense disturbances on at least a Universal scale, especially if those were related to magic, or primordial entities.

And right now, he sensed something. Something had changed, something terrible had happened, and it was affecting everything, the whole world, perhaps the Universe.

What it was, he could not tell right now, but it was bad, very bad, his finger twitched on sensing it. Suddenly, he saw Astra Logue in front of him, being taken away, and he let out a scream.

Then, he realized he was still standing here, and this had happened in his mind, but it looked so vivid, so real, he did not know why or how, at least not yet.

Next moment, his phone rang, and he saw it was Oliver. Pressing the button, he put the phone to his ear. "What is it, mate?"

"Its Sara, John, she isn't waking up from her sleep."

"What the…?" Constantine wondered, his mind putting the pieces together. "I am coming very soon, just stay put where you are."

He gathered some supplies, then quickly walked out of his place. If this was what he thought he was, some dumb git was really messing with things that they couldn't understand.

Star City

Constantine knocked on the door, and Oliver opened it, looking quite haggard himself.

"You don't look well", Constantine told him.

"I….I don't know", Oliver shook his head. "She is not waking up. I tried to call Roy and Thea, they didn't pick up either. Neither did Quentin and Laurel. Or Nyssa. And I didn't want to leave her."

Then suddenly Barry-Red sped in, and when he stopped, Constantine noted he looked very haggard as well. The conman put a hand on his shoulder. "You all right, mate?"

"Caitlin's not waking up, neither are Patty, Cisco, Joe, Cecile or Ralph", Barry-Red revealed, to Oliver's horror, and Constantine narrowed his eyes. "So I came here, first thing I could think of."

"That means…." Oliver trailed off, realizing why his other friends weren't picking up. "They all are not waking up either."

What the hell was going on right now? This question was now at the top in the minds of both the archer and the speedster.

"I think the awake ones are not fully in their senses, except me that is", Constantine walked to the bedroom, Oliver and Barry following him.

Sara was asleep, and completely unmoving, except some very light breathing which confirmed she was alive. But people had a habit of moving slightly in their sleep, most people at least, just to change positions and all that.

Except her light breathing, Sara didn't move one bit.

And based on what Oliver and Barry were describing, the conman had a feeling he knew what was going on right now.

Suddenly, Oliver fell down, gasping in pain, while Barry-Red cried out. "MOM!"

Constantine turned to them, kneeling next to Oliver. "Mate, what happened?"

"I was….on the island again….Wintergreen stabbed me", Oliver said, barely in his senses now as he looked at Constantine. "What's happening?"

"My mom…I saw her stabbed by Thawne…and my future self didn't run me off….." Barry-Red told him, also barely in his senses.

"Oh bloody Hell!" Constantine put a hand on Sara's forehead, then chanted as his eyes glowed, while the lights seemed to flicker, the whole house darkening, and the ground seeming to shake.

Constantine found himself in a different land, one that people perceived during their sleep, but how they saw it was based on their perception.

However, Constantine, with his power, perceived it how it was. And it looked like it was slowly decaying, and rotting.

"Some bloody gits!"

Constantine was back in the real world, and he turned to Oliver and Barry-Red. "I think I know what's going on. Just stay here, I'm gonna go fix it."

Constantine walked out of the house, coming out into the open, when hellfire appeared in front of him, and Lucifer Morningstar stood there.

The conman then looked around, seeing very few people on the streets, and those that were looked quite haggard like Oliver and Barry-Red had.

"Detective is not waking up", Lucifer informed Constantine. "And I sensed-"

"So did I-", Constantine confirmed with a nod. "If we do not fix this in time, the Multiverse will get affected."

"Indeed", Lucifer nodded, before smirking. "Well, lucky for you, I can sense these entities, and I know where it has been kept right now."

"Well then, what are we waiting for?" Constantine asked.

In a dark place, a guy called Alex looked at the binding circle before him, his guards nearby as they shared looks.

"Have we captured it?" Alex asked one of them.

"I don't think that is what we intended to capture, sir", the guard said, gesturing to a pale being with dark hair inside the circle, curled in the center of it, glaring at all of them.

Suddenly, hellfire appeared, and they turned to see Lucifer and Constantine before them.

"You dumb little gits!" Constantine said to them with a shake of his head.

"Kill them!" Alex ordered as his guards opened fire, but Lucifer stepped in the way, taking all the bullets easily.

"Hello mates, I'm Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil", Lucifer introduced himself with a smirk, horrifying them all. "And I'm here because of your stupidity, Detective does not wake up."

He was suddenly next to them, and lifted one by the throat, tossing him to the corner, then as they tried to fire again, he knocked one out with an uppercut, then flipped another over his shoulder onto another one.

Constantine grabbed one's gun, then hit his face with his elbow thrice, knocking him out, before chanting as three of the guards felt dizzy and dropped their guns, fainting.

Lucifer's eyes glowed in front of three more guards, and they screamed in horror, dropping their guns, while Constantine scuffled the binding circle with his leg.

"NO! DON'T!" Alex cried out in horror but it was too late.

The being inside walked out, and Constantine noted for whatever reason he seemed to resemble Charles Xavier of Earth-10005.

The being glared at Alex. "Lord, what fools these mortals be."

"I know, right?" Lucifer asked, as Alex fell on his knees.

"I'm sorry, we were trying to capture Death!" He begged, and now Lucifer and Constantine shared incredulous looks.

"So you're even stupider than we thought", Constantine realized.

"You are literally messing with primordial forces beyond your understanding!" Lucifer snapped.

"What? You wanted Death? Then count yourself lucky for the sake of your species and your petty planet that you did not succeed", the being said to Alex coldly, in a tone so calm it only terrified the guy more. "And instead, you ensnared Death's younger brother."

As Alex shivered, the being said. "You'll never know how lucky you were. Where are my tools? A pouch, a helm, a ruby. Your people stole them from me, where are they?"

Constantine chanted in Latin, sensing where they were, then holding out his hand, chanted again, as the items appeared in his hand, and he handed those to the being.

Then he turned to Alex. "Now, your punishment. To reward you for this hospitality of yours, I give you this", he held out his hand. "Eternal waking."

"NO!" Alex screamed, before falling asleep right there.

The being turned to Lucifer and Constantine. "You have my gratitude for freeing me", he looked at Lucifer. "Lucifer Morningstar." Then he looked at Constantine. "And John Constantine."

"Its not a problem, mate, just go do what you're supposed to", Constantine shrugged. "Because the whole world is affected, badly, the Multiverse will follow in a bit."

"Indeed, and Detective needs to wake up", Lucifer added. "So, Dream, go back to your kingdom, and save it."

Dream nodded, walking ahead. "Yes, I must go back to my kingdom, and save it."

And then Dream faded away in a black mist.

Next moment, Constantine got a call from Oliver again and picked it up. "Yeah, what's up mate?"

"Sara's awake", Oliver's voice said, sounding relieved. "And I think I'm fine too, Barry as well. He ran back to Central City and told me his friends were awake too. Batman called too, Gotham had a similar problem, but now he said its fixed. Plus I think I'm now getting a call from Roy. Thank you for your help."

"No problem, mate", Constantine assured as Oliver cut the call, and he turned to Lucifer. "It worked."

"Very well then", Lucifer disappeared in hellfire, as Constantine walked out, seeing the people walking normally again, looking very confused, but now they were well.

Lucifer appeared in his penthouse, seeing Decker was finally awake, as she rubbed her head. "What happened? I thought I was-"

"You're all right, Detective, and so is this", Lucifer touched her baby bump, kissing her forehead, hugging her head to his chest. "That's all that matters to me."

Decker smiled, happy to be with him.

Alex woke up, his guard in front of him as he asked. "Are you all right?"

"Yeah, I think so", Alex confirmed. "Just think I'd this weird dream, where our prisoner escaped."

"He has, he did", the guard told him, before smiling insanely as his eyes seemed to contort inwards while his face turned demonic. "He's out Alex. He checked out this morning."

Alex shot out of bed. "KEEP AWAY FROM ME!"

He saw one of his maids in front of his bed now as she said. "Calm down, sir, you just had a bad dream."

"Oh God! It was terrifying!" Alex said. "It was like I'd woken up, but I hadn't. You know what that's like, right?"

Suddenly, her head fell onto his lap and said. "I don't think I know that. But you'll know it very well soon enough."

He screamed in horror.

Dream sat on his throne in his realm, the Dreamworld, once more.

"He will never return to the life he knew. His is the nightmare everlasting…Eternal waking."

And with this, I introduce the DC character Dream, from 'The Sandman' comic run, which is fantastic.

Lucifer got involved here due to the character's supporting role in the comics.

I know Tom Sturridge shall play the character but I've a bias to James McAvoy as he voiced Dream in the audiobook.

Plus I feel I've introduced a lot of Marvel characters in this series, not so much DC, so this is a bit of a fix for that.

Hope all enjoyed and see you all next time with another chapter.
