Chapter 60
Sam woke early the next morning since he was still on his school schedule, even on the weekend. He sat on the side of the bed and yawned loudly, stretching his arms over his head and grunting.
"Dude, it's Saturday, we can sleep in," Dean grumbled opening one eye to glare at him.
"But we don't have but today and part of tomorrow to be together," Sam whined. "And today I'm training with Missouri."
"Fine," Dean sighed throwing back the covers and sitting up. He threw a pillow at Sam hitting him in the face and chuckled when Sam retaliated by throwing it back.
"You think Missouri is up?" Sam asked as he dug clean clothes out to wear.
"I'm sure she senses we're up," Dean replied getting out clothes too. "Dibs on bathroom first," he said scooting around the bed and hurrying out the door to the bathroom.
"Fine with me," Sam shrugged stripping out of his sleep clothes and slipping on shorts and T-shirt. He sat on the bed to put on socks and sneakers before standing up and finding his bathroom bag. He went into the hall and waited for Dean to finish in the bathroom.
When Dean finally came from the bathroom, Sam went in and did his thing before heading downstairs to find the others. He found Missouri in the kitchen stirring something in a pot but didn't see his brother.
"Dean is gathering the last of the berries for me child. I thought they would be good over the oatmeal I fixed for our breakfast."
"Oh, okay. Can I help with anything?"
"You can set the table and get what you want to drink."
"Alright." Sam busied himself with the tasks. He looked up when the backdoor opened and Dean stepped inside with a bowl in his hand that had fat, juicy berries in it.
"That's it for your berries Missouri. You've still got some vegetables I can pick for you if you like."
"Why thank you Dean, that's kind of you."
"What are you drinking Dean?" Sam asked.
"Coffee is good."
"Okay," Sam nodded going to the small coffee pot and pouring a cup for him as Dean washed his hands and then washed the berries.
"Alright you two, breakfast is ready," Missouri announced spooning oatmeal into bowls and sitting them on the placemats. She pulled sausage biscuits from the oven and placed the pan on a hotplate in the middle of the table.
"Oh, wow, that smells good," Dean sighed as he drew in a deep breath smelling them. He let Missouri take a biscuit and helped himself to two before offering one to Sam.
They ate their meal and Missouri asked Sam how he was doing training with his power and listened as he answered him. She asked Dean about his job and how Bobby was doing and laughed softly when he talked about one of Bobby's towing jobs tales. They finished their meal and cleaned up before Missouri brought up Sam's training.
"Are you ready Samuel?" Missouri asked him.
"Yes, I am," Sam replied sincerely.
"Shall we go to my private office?"
"What about me?" Dean questioned.
"That is up to Samuel, do you want your brother joining us child?"
"Sure, why not? I've got nothing to hide," Sam shrugged.
"Alright then," Missouri declared. "Follow me. I thought we would train this morning and you boys can have the afternoon to visit."
The brothers followed Missouri down the hall to a door that she unlocked and flipped on a switch, lighting a lamp sitting on a small bookcase. They looked around the room noting the round wooden table sitting in the middle of the room with four chairs around it. The surface was highly polished and gleamed. Another taller bookcase sat against one wall that was filled with a wide variety of books, scripts, and tomes. Another shorter bookcase held all kinds of figurines, statutes, and objects they hadn't seen before. There was a large cabinet with doors on the opposite wall that Missouri stepped to and unlocked, opening the doors revealing, rows of bottles of different shapes and sizes, candles of assorted colors, several leather-bound books, crystals, and a couple of brass bowls. There were drawers on the bottom and Missouri pulled one out to retrieve a folded black cloth.
She shook it out and placed it over the table, letting it drape over the sides. There were sigils embroidered on it and Sam wondered what they meant. He studied them closely and decided to ask Missouri about them later. Missouri took out two yellow candles and placed them in the middle of the table between the sigils.
"Go ahead and have a seat, boys," Missouri told them as she went back to the cabinet to take out an incense stick and light it, watching the thin trail of smoke rise toward the ceiling, seeming to have a mind of its own as it snaked across it. It didn't take long for the room to fill with an earthy, pleasant scent. She went to the table and lit the candles before taking a seat across from them.
"Now Samuel, if at any time you need to stop or want to stop, you just tell me, and we will. There is no rush to do this, we can take our time. It's better to take small steps than try to achieve huge leaps before you are ready. Is that okay with you?"
"Yes, I agree. I want to take my time so I can understand what is happening to me. I think the more I know about it the easier it will be to use it and if other abilities do show up, I'll be ready for them."
"That is wise thinking Samuel. If you go into this with that kind of attitude, I think you'll make quick progress."
"Thanks," said Sam shyly, taking the complement. "I have been practicing telekinesis every night before going to bed."
Dean sat by his brother, remaining silent as he listened to their conversation. He wasn't going to say anything because he didn't want to interrupt their training session. He would only intercede if Sam seemed stressed or in trouble. He listened closely to every word Missouri spoke to Sam as she instructed him.
"Have you found that it's easier for you?"
"Yes, it's easier to move small things now with no trouble. I've been practicing trying to move larger things."
"Very good," Missouri nodded. "Let's see if you can move something that you can't see. Dean would you take a crystal from the bookcase and stand behind Sam to see if he can move it?"
"Okay," Dean replied. He got up and looked on the shelf at the crystals before picking up a red one with streaks of blue running through it. He showed it to Sam before stepping behind him leaning against the doorframe with the crystal held out in the palm of his hand.
"Now Samuel, close your eyes and clear your mind, find that power within you and search out for your brother and the crystal. Tap that inner ability and picture the crystal moving from his hand."
Sam did as he was told and closed his eyes, letting his mind clear. He drew in slow even breaths and looked deeper into himself feeling a small shock when he touched the power locked within him. He let it fill him with a newfound energy. Sam pictured the crystal in his mind and his brother holding it behind him. He concentrated on the cool, colored stone and willed it to come to him.
After a moment, he felt the connection with the crystal. He willed it to rise from Dean's hand. It moved through the air on invisible threads and came to rest in Sam's outstretch hand. When he felt the weight in his hand, Sam opened his eyes and looked down at the crystal.
"Nice Sammy," Dean praised him. "You did it on the first try."
"Wow, I did," Sam replied amazed that he had accomplished it.
"It was strange, I could kind of feel you touching it and the crystal wavered for a moment before moving upward toward your palm."
"So, you sensed Samuel when he pushed his powers outward," Missouri said.
"Yeah, it was a feather like touch and a little tingling."
"Interesting. Samuel, I would like to try something different to see if you might be able to accomplish it. But don't feel discouraged if you can't do it."
"Okay, what is it?"
"You have been moving inanimate objects so far, how about you try to move something alive?" Missouri said casting her eyes to Dean who was still standing.
"Hum…Okay, is it okay Dean? Can I try to move you?"
"Sure, why not," Dean shrugged.
Dean watched Sam as he slowed his breathing and focused on him. He watched Sam raise his hand with his palm toward him. A sudden invisible pressure seemed to press in on his chest, but it wasn't hard enough to make him move.
"It's okay Sammy, you're not going to hurt me," Dean told him because he didn't think he was really using his full strength.
Sam bit his lower lip as his brow creased and he pushed out harder. He watched Dean's face sensing something was happening as he swayed slightly but still didn't move. His face pinched and he felt a slight pain building in his head as he gasped out a breath.
"I think that's enough Samuel," Missouri told him when she sensed his distress.
"I couldn't do it," Sam pouted.
"But it was close bro. I felt you pushing on me, and you almost had it. We can practice that more later."
"Why don't we work on your meditation child?" Missouri told him. "You need to know how to let yourself relax in order to have more control over your power."
"You'll get it Sammy, practice makes perfect," Dean offered taking a seat by Sam again.
"I thought when Dean can join us, I'd teach both of you a few simple spells and show you some sigils that might come in handy."
"I'd like that," Sam noted his interest peaked about learning spells.
"Sammy already knows one, don't you?" Dean smirked.
"And what might that be?" Missouri asked looking to Sam with interest.
"It was nothing," Sam mumbled as his face reddened slightly. "I didn't know it would happen when I read the words from a book donated to the library."
"Yeah, the spell blocked the front door with the furniture from the living room. We couldn't get in and had to go around to the back door," Dean explained. "Bobby wasn't none too happy. Had to move the stuff back into the living room."
"I see," Missouri laughed softly. "Well, we'll see if we can't learn a little more control over casting spells."
"Yes ma'am," Sam nodded.
"Now Samuel, I want you to relax and close your eyes," Missouri instructed him. "Empty your mind of all thoughts and let it be free. There's only you floating in a sea of clouds. Slow your breathing and listen to your heartbeat as it begins to slow. That's it, nice even breaths as you go deeper…." Missouri's soft voice continued to guide him. She looked over at Dean and saw he was copying Sam and trying to mediate too. "Very good, you can feel your body seems to get lighter as all the stress and aches seem to vanish in a puff of smoke…." She stopped talking and let them work on looking deep within themselves.
After a few minutes Missouri smiled and held back a laugh as Dean started to snore softly as his head fell forward and he slumped against the table. Sam was doing good, and she reached out to gently touch his mind seeing he was relaxed.
When Dean snorted loudly and jumped bumping the table, waking himself up, he brought Sam from his mediation too. He quickly wiped the drool from his chin hoping no one noticed and used his hand to wipe the wet spot on the table.
Sam took a couple of deep breaths as he let his mind and body reconnect and looked at his brother who was frowning and wiping the table acting like he hadn't been asleep and drooling.
"What happened?" Dean asked. "Did I miss something?"
"Well, Dean, you decided to take a little nap," Missouri chuckled. "I guess you were really relaxed and no you didn't miss anything, Sam is doing well with his mediation."
"You're not supposed to fall asleep Dean," Sam chided as he rolled his shoulders and neck.
"Why don't we take a break, and you go get something to drink?" Missouri suggested.
"Yeah, Sammy, I need a drink," Dean added getting up and waiting for Sam to join him. "Is there still some coffee from breakfast? I need a caffeine boost."
The brothers headed for the kitchen where Dean got a cup of coffee and warmed it in the microwave and Sam got a bottle of water from the fridge. They went out onto the deck and sat at the picnic table.
"Are you okay with what you've done so far Sammy?" Dean asked him as he looked him over.
"Yeah, I need to master this power for it to be useful and I'm willing to do what it takes to do that. I also want to learn how to do spells and about sigils too."
"All in due time. You shouldn't have a need for that stuff any time soon."
"Probably, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared."
"Maybe this afternoon we'll take a walk or drive."
"I'd like to go back by our old house. I want to see it again."
"Sure, we can do that."
The brothers fell quiet as they watched the critters scampering around in the yard and around the birdfeeders. This was a start to Sam learning how to control his ability and getting comfortable using it. He didn't know if any other powers would present themselves or not, but the one he had would be enough for him if they didn't.
A/N: Sam is anxious to master his power and be able to use it proficiently. Thank you for taking this journey with me. I do like reviews/comments. NC
