Author Note: Hey everyone. I recently submitted a scene for a fanfic contest for the star guardian universe. I love the Kai'sa Akali Friendship as well as their Romance so damn much. The VN has made me very depresso. This takes place after their battle with Fiddlesticks. If Riot gives me a super sad ending I will have to write my own story in full. I was limited to 1000 words for this, so it's a bit short and not as detailed as I wished, but I hope you guys like it.
Forget Me Not
Akali laid back on the field of Targon park, blue locks of hair waving with the blades of grass as the wind blew past her, her bracelet glinting from the rays of the setting sun. It felt like forever since she could just relax, no longer hunted by that monster.
No... Not a monster, a fallen guardian. Akali sighed, her eyes closing as the suffocating thoughts of her fate returned. A feeling she so desperately wanted her best friend to understand. Her brows furrowed, and the rogue's head shifted to the side, eyes still closed as she imagined a scene from what felt like a lifetime ago.
A smile formed on her lips; she could almost feel Kai's hand within her own, a time when their worries were on things like fights or stray animals. Doing what they could to help Valoran City, no starlight or magical outfits, just the power derived from their bond. Then her eyes opened. She felt as alone as the day Kai'sa found her in that alley.
"I just want you back..." she whispered, her eyes welling with tears, ripping her away from her reverie.
"Akali?" an all too familiar voice called out from behind her, causing the blue-haired girl to sit up straight, turning her head over her shoulder.
Kai'sa stood in the field, her bright pink hair fluttering in the wind, the Wishing Tree of Targon park as her backdrop.
Akali turned away, sniffling as she tried to wipe the tears from her eyes. She didn't want Kai to see her like this. But it was too late.
"Why are you here? Did I miss another training session or something?" Akali spat, her voice low and gravely.
"No, 'Kali, but I've been looking for you everywhere. Are you okay? Why are you out here?" Kai'sa questioned with a concerned expression, then took a few tentative steps forward. Her eyes briefly looked up to the sunset in the distance.
"Shouldn't you be trying to talk to that stupid statue? It seems like you hang out with that lump of rock more than your own best friend." Akali hugged her knees to her chest, her eyes locked on the bracelet around her wrist.
"I'm sorry, 'Kali... That's why I'm here, I-..." Kai paused and slowly walked over to Akali before sitting next to her in the grass, "I just want to protect you."
It was the same nonsense Akali was tired of hearing, and she turned towards her, scowling, "You can't put this all on yourself, Kai! We are supposed to do this /together/! You promised you wouldn't shut me out! You promised me nothing would change between us, but you lied!" Akali got up, her hands balled into fists as she went to walk away.
She stopped in her tracks, bad memories coming to the front of her mind. The last time she had left her friend like this, she nearly lost her. She felt guilt for leaving her best friend as she went to the mall. But this was bigger. This was everything. She would not give up on Kai.
Akali turned back around, "Stop pushing me away, stop trying to carry everyone's problem stones! Or whatever they're called!" she continued to yell at Kai, trying to draw up some of Noodle Bill's wisdom but felt like a fool after saying it aloud, not that she'd admit it right now.
Kai'sa was silent, her eyes downcast now as well. No excuses left her lips this time, no talk of Lux, the old guardians.
"I just... I want my best friend back. I want Kai'sa back. Like you promised me..." Akali went on further, hoping and wishing she could get through to her. Just maybe that old tree has some magic of its own.
Silenced filled the air, the sun disappeared behind the treeline, stars began filling the night sky, and Kai'sa eventually rose to her feet.
Kai lept forward, arms wrapping around Akali's shoulders; the only sound she made was quiet sobs, "I'm sorry... I'm sorry..." she repeated, "I don't want to hurt you 'Kali... I don't want you to be mad at me, I don't want to break my promises to you."
Akali froze as she felt Kai'sa latch onto her, not expecting this reaction in the slightest. She slowly lifted her arms and returned the hug. She wanted to be angry at Kai right now, but she couldn't be now. So she held her best fright tightly.
"I don't know how to do this, 'Kali... I'm supposed to be the leader, but I don't know what that means." Kai'sa muttered, sniffling as she slowly pulled her head back, her eyes gazing into Akali's own.
"Of course, you don't... We're in high school and trying to fight some super powerful cosmic darkness. But you're not alone. Do you hear me, Kai? You're not alone. You've never been alone, not since the day you found me. The day you saved me. Let me in." Akali pleaded.
Both of their eyes were watery, reflecting the starlight from above. Their cheeks glistening from their tears. Though not from sadness, but from joy. From love.
Kai nodded slowly, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips, "I will." she said brightly, her arms squeezing around Akali even tighter.
"Promise me." she choked out, holding back her emotions.
"But, I-" Kai knew she was not good at keeping promises, but Akali wanted to believe in her all the same.
"Please... Promise me, Kai..." she pleaded this time.
Kai'sa smiled softly, "I promise."
Akali smiled as well, her arms slipping down from Kai's back until her left hand found Kai's right, entwining her fingers with her best friend's, their bracelets dangling from their wrists.
They both faced the same direction, hand in hand, as they gazed up at the stars.
"Friends to the end, Kai. No matter what." Akali said, smiling up at the stars.
"Forever and ever, 'Kali." Kai'sa answered, squeezing her hand.
