Hope Valley

November 12, 1918

Dearest Lucas,

I am writing this letter even before I receive your next one because I want to thank you for the wonderful trip right away. I know that all the kisses and hugs from us both let you know, but I still wanted to write you and tell you how much Jack and I enjoyed our time with you. You are always so thoughtful and you think of everything. We were treated like a queen and little prince and for your birthday no less.

It was so sweet to see Jack playing with the concierge's son and having such a grand time He has so little opportunity to be around other children his age. Marie was so kind to look over Jack for us while we stole some private time.

We both so enjoyed the motion picture. Fortunately, it was one that Jack could enjoy too. He was quite mesmerized by it all; thank you so much for sitting him on your lap and explaining what was happening. He loved the doggie and all the antics with his little owner. The movie was a highlight, but he was so happy to run in the park and play ball with you. It is so nice for him to have someone other than his mother and nanny Laura and such to spend time with. He does so love his Auntie Rosie and Uncle Lee, and having someone that he sees is with his mommy in the way Uncle Lee is with his Auntie is so very special. He has come to the age that he is beginning to understand what it means to have both a mother and a father and to be a part of a family unit. To have you there for us in that way is a joy that I cannot wait to become official.

His favorite part of the trip was the cake with all the candles to blow out. Thank you for sharing that with him. He was so happy to sing to you although I am not sure exactly how much of the actual song came out; but the message was clearly heartfelt. And I do want to thank you for not getting upset when little hands got icing on your new vest. You are quickly learning that little ones are not always in step with keeping a polished appearance. You are going to be the best father, Lucas. You have the joy of youth still in your heart and you care deeply about others. When I see you with Allie and Robert and the other youths in Hope Valley it only confirms what I know to be true. That is a letter all in itself someday.

So, I will leave you with my thank you and Jack's and I am saving another big hug and kiss for you next time I get to see you. Hopefully you will be able to make it this evening.

I am ever yours,

Elizabeth
