We're Here
Takes place months after the first film.
Also, I picked a name of the island at the beginning of this that doesn't appear in Race to the Edge, Defenders of Berk, Riders of Berk, or any of the Dragons movies or shorts.
True, the island is only in the story for a short time. But still.
This may or may not have similarities to Zenna Fiersome. If it does, it is not intentional, and I apologize to GuardianDragon98.
Also, sorry if this one-shot feels rushed.
This includes a reference to The Emoji Movie, which I love. Yes, I love that movie. Say what you will, but I think it's a great movie!
It's late on Ludia Island. 16-year old Rebekah Elizabeth Nielson is with her parents, not doing much of anything.
Rebekah is wearing a yellow tunic, black leggings and boots, with her brown hair in a ponytail.
Suddenly, the horn sounds, signaling a dragon attack.
"Becky, stay hidden. We can't risk anything."
"Mom, Dad, I'm 16 years old. I'll be fine." But Becky, being small for her age, having been born premature, hides away from the attacking dragons.
Before she can even blink, she watches in horror as a dragon kills her parents.
She stays hidden, not wanting to be the next victim.
An unknown amount of time passes before someone comes into the house.
It's a man, and he has a sinister look on his face.
"I know there's someone hiding here. A girl, perhaps? I could use a girl...for personal reasons." Becky's nose picks the perfect time to let out a sneeze.
"Ah-ha! I've got you." The man snatches Becky from her hiding place, which was behind a crate.
"You'll make a terrific wench for me." Becky, helpless, is dragged by the man towards the docks.
"Who-who are you?"
"I am Krogan, but that is unimportant." Krogan throws Becky onto his boat, but when his back is turned, she flees, swimming as fast as she can, not looking back. Krogan doesn't go after her, and for that, she is grateful.
She soon gets tired of swimming, and lets the sea drift her further from home.
About a day later, at night, she comes across an island that looks to be inhabited. But, exhausted, she doesn't see any way of getting onto the island.
"Help!" She calls out.
"Hold on! Hang on! I'm coming!" A nasally voice calls back.
"Thank you!"
She treads water, hoping her rescuer would come soon.
"Grab on!" It's then Becky notices the boy is on a dragon.
"It's okay. It's okay. He won't hurt you." Becky, cautious, grabs on and the boy pulls her up onto the dragon. The dragon rises into the air, heading back to the main part of the island.
"I've never met anyone who's ridden a dragon before. By the way, thank you for saving me."
"You're welcome. I'm Hiccup. Great name, I know. What's yours?"
"Becky. And before you ask, I'm16...I'm small for my age because I was born premature."
"I was born early, too. I'm 15."
"Cool. What were you doing out so late?"
"I just felt the need to fly."
"Huh...must be fate, then. You rescuing me, I mean."
"Must be. So, Becky, where are you from?"
"Ludia Island. My parents..." Becky chokes back a sob.
"My parents were killed in a dragon attack about a day ago."
"I am so sorry. No wonder you were scared of Toothless. Why'd you leave home, if you don't mind my asking?"
"A man...a man named Krogan...he was after the women on my island, I could see other women from my tribe on his boat...he came after me...told me I was to be his personal wench. So I fled."
"It was very brave of you to flee."
"Thanks. So where are we going?"
"To my home. My dad's the chief of the tribe. He can be a bit intimidating...and loud...at first...but he'll grow on you."
"Okay. Thanks. What do I call him?"
"Chief Stoick."
"Got it. Thanks."
They soon land in the front yard of the Haddock house.
"My dad's probably still awake."
Hiccup leads Becky into his house. She stops just inside the door, intimidated by Stoick.
"Dad, I, uh, I just rescued someone."
"Oh, really?"
"Yes. She's 16. Her parents were killed in a dragon raid about a day ago, and she fled someone who wanted her to be his wench, and she drifted to Berk."
"Well, I'm glad you were there to rescue her, Hiccup." Stoick clears his throat, noticing the scared young girl.
"Why don't you come over here? I don't bite." Becky cautiously makes her way over to Stoick.
"First and foremost, I give you my condolences for your parents."
"Thank you, Chief Stoick."
"You're welcome. And, please, just call me Stoick. Secondly, if anyone tries to harm you, please don't hesitate to tell me."
"Thank you, Stoick."
"It's late. Why don't you get some rest, Hiccup? I'd like to talk to Becky a bit more." Hiccup nods, then heads to bed.
"So, Becky, if you don't mind my asking, what was the name of the man who wanted you?"
"K-Krogan." Stoick's eyes darken at the name. For someone so young, surely even Krogan wouldn't stoop that low. But Stoick knows the man Krogan works for, and hopes this young girl never has to come across him.
"You don't have to fear him coming after you. I will make sure you're protected."
"Thank you."
"If there's ever anything I could do for you, let me know. Did...did you swim all the way from your island?"
"About halfway before I just drifted."
"You must be exhausted. Go get some rest."
Soon, Becky falls asleep in Hiccup's bed, Hiccup leaning against Toothless on the floor.
The next morning, Hiccup takes Becky to Gothi, the village healer, who gives the girl a checkup. She soon declares Becky healthy and lets them leave.
"So, we've got the whole day to spend. I could take you on a tour of Berk or introduce you to my friends."
"Why don't you introduce me to your friends? The sooner, the better, right?"
"Good point. Let's get going then. They're probably in the arena."
On the way, Hiccup tells Becky about how he and Toothless met, and how they stopped the Red Death.
"That's quite the heroic story."
"Thanks."
The two soon reach the arena, where Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut, Tuffnut and Astrid are waiting.
"Hey, guys. There's someone I need to introduce you to." Hiccup steps aside, revealing Becky.
"H-hi." Fishlegs steps up first, and Becky is a bit intimidated by his size.
"Hi! I'm Fishlegs. I'm a bit of an expert when it comes to dragons."
"R-really? Th-that's pretty cool."
"There's no need for you be nervous. I don't bite."
"Yeah. Fishface here is a softie." Snotlout says.
"I just...I'm not very comfortable around d-dragons."
"How come? Are you parents against dragons or something?" Ruffnut asks.
"That'd be better than...than what happened to them."
"What happened to them?" Tuffnut asks.
"They...they were killed in a dragon raid a couple of days ago."
"Oh, my gods. I'm so sorry." Ruffnut says.
"Thank you."
The rest of the group introduces themselves.
~.~
Hiccup takes Becky on a tour of Berk, Astrid watching them closely.
Jealousy slowly growing inside of her.
She pulls him aside one day while Becky is in the Great Hall.
"Hiccup, I don't trust this girl. Do you actually believe her story? Her parents were killed in a dragon raid?"
"She's traumatized by losing her parents and almost getting made to be a wench by someone. Give her time, Astrid."
"I'm keeping my eye on her."
Over the next few months, a romance blossoms between Hiccup and Becky.
One day, however, things take a turn for the worse. Becky sneaks out of the Haddock house, and heads toward the Cove.
She sits down on a rock. Hiccup had taken her here a few times, but she had never been here alone.
Until now.
"Why am I here? My parents are gone, that Krogan guy could want me, I'm sure Hiccup will get bored of me soon enough. I'm not interesting. There's no reason for me to be here on Berk, but I have nowhere else to go." Becky says to herself.
She eyes the lake in front of her.
"I'll see Mom and Dad again. I won't have to worry about what my purpose is or the future or why I'm such a mistake, because I'll be gone. I was born so small, so why didn't I die then?"
She steps up to the lake and plunges right in, swimming to the bottom.
She doesn't notice Ruffnut and Tuffnut have followed her here, curious as to why she's been quieter than usual these past few weeks.
"What is she doing?" Tuffnut asks.
"I'm not sure. Should we...go down there? She could be in big trouble. She may really need our help." Ruffnut says.
"We should. Come on. She's been down there for a while."
The twins head to the lake.
"Can you see her?" Ruffnut asks.
"She's gotta be down there somewhere. I'm going in after her." Tuffnut dives into the lake, and he barely sees her at the bottom.
Ruffnut, meanwhile, has started pacing, worried for both Becky and Tuffnut.
"Come on, Tuff. Please find her."
He suddenly surfaces with Becky.
"She's unconscious."
"Crap. What should we do?"
"I'll start CPR, you go get help."
"Tuff, I'll do CPR. You go get help. Go!" Tuffnut runs off as Ruffnut starts CPR on Becky.
A few minutes pass.
"Come on, Becky. Breathe, damn it!"
Several more minutes pass as Hiccup and Tuffnut (on Toothless) approach the scene.
"Ruffnut! How's she doing?"
"She's still unconscious. It's not looking good, Tuffnut." Suddenly, Becky starts breathe and Ruffnut immediately flips her on her side.
"Oh, thank Thor." Hiccup says.
"Hiccup, go get Gothi. We can't move her. Not yet." Tuffnut says. Hiccup nods and flies off.
"Shhh, sweetie. It's okay. It's okay. We're here. We've got you." Ruffnut says, holding Becky in her arms.
"I'm sorry...I'm so so sorry." Becky says, in tears.
Soon, Becky is carried by Tuffnut to Gothi's hut, where she soon falls asleep.
"Ruff, we gotta talk to Mom and Dad." Tuffnut says as he and Ruffnut watch her.
"About what?"
"To see if they'll adopt her. Her real parents...they're gone. She needs us. We need to make sure this won't happen again, and this is the only way we can closely monitor her."
"Let's wait a few days before we talk to Becky about it. But we have to tell Mom and Dad as soon as we can."
Ruffnut and Tuffnut's parents, Lily and Frank, soon come in.
"Mom, Dad...we need to talk to you." Tuffnut says.
So he and Ruffnut try to convince their parents to adopt Becky into their family.
"Kids, we admire your hearts, but we have no room."
"But she's so small! She's our age...well, she's a year older than us, but still, she's small! Pleeeaaaase?" Tuffnut asks, using the puppy-dog eyes. Ruffnut joins him in that regard.
"Oh, alright. Have you talked to her yet?"
"No."
"Talk to her when she wakes up, see what she thinks about all of this. Then, when she's up to it, we can go to Stoick and make it official."
Soon, Becky wakes up.
"Hey, kiddo." She looks to her left to see Ruffnut and Tuffnut.
"Hey, guys."
"Becky, there's something we need to talk to you about." Ruffnut says, sitting on the bed next to the young girl.
"What's up?"
"We – aka the Thorstons – would like to bring you into our family. To adopt you." Tuffnut says.
"Really?"
"Yeah. I mean, we get it and we understand if it's too soon after your parents, but we hope you'll consider our offer."
"Are you taking me in because I tried to commit suicide?"
"Partially, yes." Tuffnut says, guiltily.
"We also want to take you in because we care about you, and we want to be there for you. We want you to feel like you're not alone." Ruffnut says.
"You barely know me."
"We know that, but we're willing to get to know you as our sister. Please, let us do this for you." Tuffnut says, taking one of Becky's hands.
Becky nods.
"Okay."
"Great! Then, welcome, our dear sister, to the Thorston clan! Well, unofficially, since we'll need to go to Stoick to make it official." Tuffnut says.
"But only once you're up to it."
Soon, Becky is well enough to have Stoick make her an official Thorston by adoption.
"As chief of the Hooligan tribe, I now declare Rebekah Nielson to be adopted by the Thorston clan, thus changing her last name from Nielson to Thorston. Congratulations to the Thorston clan on their new member!" Stoick says, in front of his tribe and the Thorston clan.
(Because I'm writing a chapter on the Thorston Induction Trials, Gruffnut was not present at this ceremony, nor was he told about the new addition to the family until Ruffnut and Tuffnut's 19th birthday, the day of the trials)
Cheers erupt from the crowd.
The feast commences as Becky is welcomed into the Thorston clan.
Not used to being the center of attention, Becky slips away unnoticed. Hiccup follows her, wanting to make sure she won't try to commit suicide again.
"You okay?"
"I'm just not used to being the center of attention. That's all. I know it was rude to leave a party that's in my honor."
"It's okay. I get it."
Hiccup draws nearer to Becky, and, in a sudden burst of confidence, kisses her. Becky, having never been kissed before, relishes in her first kiss.
Astrid looks on nearby, fuming.
Two uneventful years pass, and Becky and Hiccup are still dating, much to the disgust of Astrid.
One day, Becky is on the top dock, looking out at the world, wanting a moment alone.
She doesn't notice Astrid with her axe sneaking up behind her. Luckily, Hiccup and Toothless were on their way to check up on Becky, and knock Astrid out of the way just before the axe's swing meets its unfortunate target.
Becky backs up, in shock.
"Becky, you need to get out of here." Hiccup says, still holding Astrid back.
"All right, I'll go home."
"No, I mean you need to get off of Berk. Forever."
"You're...you're banishing me?"
"Yes. Go! Get out of here!"
Becky rushes down the docks, taking one of the spare boats that had food and water, and sets sail, not looking back.
Three weeks pass, and Becky has run out of supplies and is about to perish from dehydration.
She doesn't notice bumping into the side of a boat and being lifted up onto it.
"Don't worry. I've got you." A male voice says, cradling her in his arms.
