Hope Valley

December 26, 1918

Dear Elizabeth, and Lucas,

I can't tell you how wonderful it was to spend Christmas in Hope Valley. I am glad that my health has improved so much of late, which made the trip possible. My new doctor has made all the difference.

Elizabeth, I have missed you so much. It was so good to see you so radiant and happy. It is obvious that Lucas has captured your heart. I deeply regret not embarrassing your first love and I am determined not to make the same mistake again. I realize after some soul searching that I just wanted you to be in Hamilton where I thought you belonged. I know some of that comes from my upper-class prejudices and belief that you would be happier in more comfortable and familiar circumstances and with someone of common background. But after being there, I see that Hope Valley is truly your home and that there are wonderful people there who love and support you. And if you are truly happy then what more could a mother want for her child?

As far as Lucas is concerned, both Julie and William were already convinced that he is the right man for you. And having now been to Hope Valley and seeing the two of you together, I am convinced as well. Lucas, thank you for all you have done to support Elizabeth, these past years, helping her fulfill her dreams, and for loving her and making her so very happy.
We experienced so much hospitality at the Queen of Hearts; we can't thank you enough, Lucas. You and Elizabeth put forth so much effort during our visit but it all seemed effortless somehow. Gustave is an amazing chef and I think he was pleased to show off his fine dining talent.
Your parents are quite enchanting, it is obvious where you get both your intellectual side and your charm. We had fun discussing some of the places that we all have been to and comparing notes. By the way, we have been invited to Montreal to visit them sometime this year.

As for my grandson, another regret; that I have missed these years…. You have done such an amazing job raising Jack, Elizabeth. And you have friends like the Coulter's who love him so much. And speaking of love, he is so enamored with Lucas that he trails behind him wherever he goes and seems to find his lap readily every time he sits. And now with your engagement, he is so excited he will have a Papa. Lucas, you have so much patience with him and obviously, his affection is returned in kind.

Elizabeth, I missed your first wedding but will do everything I can to be there whenever you set a date. Baring a return to poor health, I will be there for this joyous event. We are looking forward to our return to Hope Valley, joining your friends to celebrate your special day.

With love,

Mother and Father
