Prompt: Kendo/Soccer
Yes I realize HeiShin week was in April. No I do not care.
"Aww, what d'ya mean, ya can't come?" Heiji's complaining voice came through Shinichi's phone. The detective sighed.
"Well, I happen to have a soccer tournament the same day," he replied. "You're going to have Kazuha there the whole time, aren't you? Be happy about that, instead of complaining about my absence."
"But I want ya to come!" Heiji repeated.
Shinichi rolled his eyes. "I promise next time you have a kendo tournament and I don't have one for soccer, I'll come. That good enough?"
"...Fine, Kudo, ya win this time," Heiji muttered. "And ya better win the soccer tournament, or I ain't forgiving ya!" He quickly hung up the phone call. Shinichi moved the phone away from his ear and stared at it blankly for a while.
"...some boyfriend you are, Hattori," he murmured, letting a bit of affection slip into his voice despite his annoyance.
A few months ago, Edogawa Conan left and Kudo Shinichi returned. Finally, Shinichi had a chance to act on his feelings towards his best friend, Hattori Heiji, and Heiji clearly felt the same - once Kazuha made him realize he had feelings in the first place, at least. They had soon gotten together, and Shinichi truly did like him, but wow , he was annoying sometimes. He wasn't sure exactly what he expected, though he supposed he should have expected this.
Shinichi had to admit he felt guilty about not going to the kendo tournament, but this soccer tournament had been coming up for a while, and Nakamichi had practically begged Shinichi on his hands and knees to please come and help the team. Shinichi finally agreed, but now Heiji wasn't too happy about it. Yet Shinichi knew he would have done the same had the roles been reversed.
"Kudo! You coming?" Nakamichi's voice called out. Shinichi turned to look at him, smiling. "The practice is starting in ten minutes!"
Shinichi nodded. "Don't worry, I'm coming." He began heading over, ignoring the guilt he felt at abandoning Heiji. He wished the Osakan detective the best of luck with his tournament.
Kazuha gave Heiji a look of boredom as they sat in his room, him tossing and turning on his bed in agitation. "Wanna talk 'bout it?"
"Nah," Heiji replied, burying his face in the pillow.
"It's about Kudo-kun, right?" Kazuha questioned. Heiji got up and glared at her.
"...nah," he finally responded.
Kazuha rolled her eyes. "I ain't an idiot, Heiji. I can see when you're having boyfriend troubles."
"I ain't," Heiji muttered.
"Ya are," Kazuha responded. "Yer angry with Kudo-kun because he can't go ta yer kendo tournament."
"Fuck ya, Kazuha," Heiji muttered again.
"Ya love him, so apologize," Kazuha suggested.
Immediately, Heiji's head shot up. "L-l- love him? No way! I-it's just like, a crush! Feelings. I just like him romantically, but I don't love him!"
Kazuha stared at him, then drawled, "Really."
"Ya, really!"
Kazuha shook her head and sighed. "Yer hopeless, Heiji. I'm giving up on ya."
"Yeah, well, ya can go if ya want!" Heiji snapped.
Kazuha got up. "I think I will!" She paused, then said, "Am I still invited for the tournament?"
Heiji buried his face in the pillows again. "Of course ya are, idiot."
Kazuha grinned. "Great!"
As she left the room, Heiji ignored the twisting feelings in his stomach in exchange for burying himself further into his pillow.
At long last, the kendo tournament was here. As he still had a few minutes before his match began, Heiji took out his phone and clicked on a number. "Hey, Kudo!"
"Hattori," Shinichi replied. "Isn't your match starting?"
Heiji's heart skipped a beat as he realized Shinichi remembered the time of his match. "Yeah, but I wanted to talk ta ya first! Hear ya voice!"
"Well, I guess I wanted to hear you too," Shinichi admitted after a moment. "You should probably hang up now, though. You barely have any time left before the match, and I'm sure Kazuha would be angry if you missed it."
Heiji's eyes widened. "Ah, crap! Yer right! Seeya soon, Kudo!" With that, he hung up the call and ran towards the match.
Only a few strokes of the sword later, Heiji was declared the winner. He heard Kazuha's cheers as he left the field and took off his kendo armor, though the clothes underneath remained. It would be a while until his next match, but unfortunately, Shinichi's soccer tournament would have started by now. All he could do now was sit… and wait.
"Hey, is that a dead body?"
Heiji immediately shot up and ran towards the voice. He spotted three men standing around a man laying on the ground, unmoving. "Let me through!" Heiji snapped.
The men looked at him. "Who are you?" One of them asked.
"Hattori Heiji, detective!" Heiji responded, pushing his way through them to reach the body.
But the moment he bent down to examine it, the body suddenly moved and grabbed him by the throat. "Then you're the one we're looking for," he said with a grin on his face.
Heiji began choking… and choking… and one of the men stuffed chloroform under his nose, and he slowly slipped… into unconsciousness…
When Heiji didn't call after the soccer tournament was finished, Shinichi grew concerned. At first he thought he got the times for the final matches wrong, but after an hour, still without a call from Heiji, Shinichi picked up the phone and called him himself.
Heiji didn't pick up.
"Goddammit, Hattori," Shinichi muttered, and called Kazuha instead. The phone barely rang before she picked up.
"Kudo-kun, it's horrible!" She immediately cried out.
"What is it?" Shinichi quickly questioned, his grip on the phone tensing, feeling his heart beat nervously in his chest.
"I can't find Heiji anywhere," Kazuha whispered, her voice trembling with fear. "After his first match, he just disappeared. No one else has seen him either!"
Shinichi paused, thinking, then said, "Maybe there was a murder?"
"A-ah, ya could be right!" Kazuha gasped, a faint note of hope in her voice.
"You're in the locker room, aren't you?" Shinichi asked. After hearing a noise of confirmation from Kazuha, he continued. "Try the back door. And, uh, prepare yourself for the possible sight of a dead body."
"I've seen so many dead bodies now that I don't care!" Kazuha replied, letting cheerfulness return to her voice. Shinichi could hear the sound of a door opening and Kazuha exiting the room. "Heiji, where are ya?"
There was no reply from Heiji, so Shinichi asked, "Do you see anything?"
Kazuha seemed to look around. "Just some white cloth on the ground," she finally responded.
Shinichi's mind froze. Could it be…? Pushing back panic, he asked Kazuha, "Does it smell strong? Don't… breathe it in too much though," he added as an afterthought.
Kazuha seemed to bend down to sniff it. "Well, yeah."
"Does it… taste sweet?" Shinichi whispered, feeling his heart almost stop.
"...yeah," Kazuha replied after a moment.
Panic immediately filled Shinichi, and he started trembling. He must have been silent for too long, because he could hear Kazuha's voice calling his name, over and over again. But he couldn't- he couldn't- No, he can't accept this happened. It can't be true, no, no, no- Heiji couldn't have been-
"Kudo-kun!" Kazuha's voice cried out. "What is it?"
Shinichi slowly lifted his phone. He could hear his voice shaking as he spoke the next words:
"That's chloroform on the ground. Hattori… has been kidnapped."
