Prompt: Stargazing

"Heiji… has been kidnapped?" Kazuha's whisper came over the phone.

Reluctantly, Shinichi nodded, before realizing she couldn't see him. "Yes. You need to contact the police right away. I'm coming over."

"Alright…" Kazuha whispered, then paused and asked, "Ya know where I am, right?"

"Yes," Shinichi responded. "Hattori messaged me the location earlier. I'll be there as soon as possible. Don't let anyone else onto the…" He squeezed his eyes shut. "Crime scene."

"Bye, Kudo-kun," Kazuha breathed out before ending the call.

Immediately, Shinichi was running towards the train. He ignored Nakamichi's excited calls of his name. He had to reach Osaka, and fast. Heiji had been kidnapped, and who knows what could have happened to him by now. Clenching his fist, Shinichi thought, Hattori… You better be alright…

Finally reaching the train station, Shinichi bought a ticket for the first train to Osaka, and immediately jumped on. The train started towards its destination. Only two and a half hours… then I can start searching for Hattori.

The train ride seemed to take much longer.

When Heiji awoke, he couldn't move. There was a blindfold over his eyes, his arms were tied behind his back, and his legs were fastened together. There was some sort of gag in his mouth as well, preventing him from speaking. Frustrated, he tried to scream, despite knowing it was hopeless.

"Well, kid's awake," said one of the kidnappers.

"He's noisy, shut him up," another grumbled.

Heiji basically growled at them, as much as the gag would allow.

"Listen, kid," said the first kidnapper. "If you don't shut up, I'll be forced to strangle you again. You don't want that, do you?"

Heiji paused at that, remembering the feeling of the hand closing around his throat, the sudden loss of his ability to breathe. For just a moment, maybe even longer, Heiji had been truly terrified. He didn't want to risk it again. So he stopped making sounds.

"You're a good kid," the kidnapper chuckled, and Heiji felt fury lash inside him, but he said nothing. Right now, he had to listen, to observe, even with his senses taken away from him.

One thing quite obvious was that they were in a car. The vehicle was moving at a normal speed, probably to avoid drawing unwanted police attention. Heiji lay down on the floor in front of the back seats, that much made obvious by two pairs of feet pressed against his body. There really wasn't enough room for all of them. Heiji had to wonder why they didn't just toss him in the trunk, though. Because seriously, this was probably uncomfortable for all three of them. The other two men must have been in the front.

"Hey boss, we there yet?" One of the men asked.

"Almost," a voice muttered. "I'm not used to driving on the right side."

Heiji paused. A foreigner? He didn't get a good look at the men, but none of them seemed to be foreigners. Someone who's lived in a foreign country?

Suddenly, the car made a sharp right turn, making Heiji's head hit the car door. Stopping himself from groaning in pain, Heiji just continued to listen to his kidnappers' talking.

"Finally!" One man groaned. "We're here!"

"Grab the kid," said the man who choked him. "You want him in Room 2R, right, boss?"

There was a pause, indicating a nod, then the boss's voice said, "You and your brother can take him there."

Brother? Heiji thought. Now that he thought about it, one of the men did look a lot like the one lying on the ground. Soon, the Osakan detective felt himself being picked up and carried through the building. His captors made so many twists and turns that Heiji found himself unable to memorize all of them. That's probably the point, then…

Finally, he was dumped inside of a room. One man untied his arms, then both seemed to leave, the door clicking shut behind them. Heiji paused for a bit before removing the blindfold and gag. While he started working on his legs, he looked around.

He was in a rather empty room. A dirty bed stood alone in the corner, and a barred window just next to it. Heiji slowly got up and peeked out, but all he could see was the sky. Ha, how useful. Looking away, Heiji tried to find anything else, but saw nothing. They've really come prepared, haven't they…

For now, Heiji was trapped, and it seemed it would stay that way.

"No witnesses at all? " Shinichi muttered to himself. Kazuha sat next to him, and she silently offered him a bottle of water, which he gratefully drank. "Seriously? We have nothing?"

"I-I know it's painful…" Kazuha whispered. "My best friend's gone. And he's yer boyfriend. It hurts so much for me… But it probably hurts even more for ya."

Shinichi let out a small sigh. "I don't know… I'm angry and I'm so worried, and…" he started shaking. "We don't even know if he's alive or not. I care so much about Hattori that this just hurts so much."

"Do ya love him?" Kazuha whispered.

"I don't… know about that," Shinichi whispered back. "I care about him a lot, but I don't know about loving him. Either way, he's my boyfriend, and I need to get him back."

"It's useless today," Kazuha pointed out quietly. "The police can deal with the rest for tonight, but it's been a long day for all of us. There's a guest room at my place, if ya want to spend the night."

Shinichi wanted to keep searching, but… "Alright," he reluctantly agreed, standing up shakily. He and Kazuha supported each other as they walked to her house.

Kazuha's parents had no problem with him staying over, so Kazuha led him to the guest bedroom and told him to call her if he needed anything. Shinichi quietly stared out the window at the stars shining in the sky, looking so close as if he could almost touch them.

Reaching a hand out, Shinichi wondered, Hattori, can you see these same stars?

Heiji's kidnappers seemed determined to let him starve. Groaning, Heiji tossed and turned in his bed, trying to ignore the stabbing hunger in his belly, before giving up and looking out the window.

The stars are beautiful tonight, he noticed absently. He tried to recognize any constellations but felt himself unable to. Sighing, he continued to look outside.

Can Kudo see this? He wondered. Are we near each other?

Only silence greeted him, so the Osakan detective eventually lay down in his bed again. He couldn't really do any investigative work in his current situation without seeing the people he had to investigate, after all.

That night, he dreamed about Kudo Shinichi.
