Prompt: Caught red-handed

Heiji had been in this room for five days, though he was starting to lose count. Every once in a while, his kidnappers would come in, though it was always one of the brothers, and always at random times. The boss clearly did not want to be seen, and the fourth kidnapper probably didn't want Heiji to see him either. Heiji found that suspicious. Could it be possible that he would recognize them from an old case?

In the end, it didn't matter as much. What mattered most was escaping this place, and finding Kudo Shinichi.

There were two areas in this room where Heiji could attempt an escape. The door, and the window. The door seemed easier. Once his kidnapper came in, Heiji could knock them unconscious and escape. The problem with that? He had no weapons at all. He supposed if he could grab the food tray and use it to knock them unconscious, it could potentially work, but it was risky. The window had bars on it, and due to Heiji's aforementioned lack of weapons, it was practically impossible to escape from.

Taking a deep breath, Heiji decided that he would use the door.

Would Kudo Shinichi have used this same plan? He was intelligent, even more so than Heiji at times, such as their very first case together. He probably would have figured out a way to get out through the window, or a less risky plan to get out through the door. His deductive abilities were almost inhuman, almost godlike , and Heiji couldn't match them at all, he couldn't… No. He'd matched them in most of their cases. He couldn't think of Shinichi like that.

Heiji leaned back on his bed with a groan. He had a plan to get out, but without knowing when his kidnappers would arrive, it was essentially useless. How thrilling. It meant he had to be prepared all the time for the kidnapper to walk inside. He didn't even know which of the brothers would come in. One was shorter than the other yet more muscular. The other was taller, yet seemed to be more brains than brawn. Heiji was glad they didn't combine their strength and smarts together, because in that case, he would be screwed.

All he could do now was wait for their entrance.

A few hours passed, in which Heiji finally got off the bed and stood waiting in a good position by the door. Through the window, he saw the sun slipping down towards the horizon. It was almost nighttime.

Finally, footsteps came down the hallway. Heiji tensed, readying himself for the moment the door cracked open. A few moments passed, and finally, it did. Immediately, Heiji lunged forward, grabbing the tray. Quickly determining that this was the shorter brother, he aimed for the back of his neck, hitting the pressure point. The brother let out a groan, then dropped onto the floor, unconscious. Heiji took barely a few seconds to catch his breath, and then he was out running through the door.

He didn't know the way out of this building. He had figured he'd break through a window, but all of them were the same as the one in his room. He had to find the actual exit. He went the way the brother had come from, guessing that was his best bet to get out of here. The corridor was quite long, and Heiji briefly recalled that this was the same corridor he had originally come from. He remembered quite a long walk to his room after the final turn. So I'm on the right path, he thought excitedly, speeding up.

After multiple turns, a lot of them guesses admittedly, Heiji came to a stairwell. He paused, trying to figure out whether to go up or down, but exhaustion had finally overtook his mind. He couldn't remember…

Room 2R. That's the room I was in, Heiji remembered, a smirk playing on his lips. In that case, I'm on the second floor, and therefore, the way to go is… down!

And that's where he ran.

Getting downstairs, Heiji breathed a sigh of relief as he realized the windows were finally made of glass. He stepped back a bit, then flung the lunch tray at the window, watching it shatter to pieces.

"Hey, did you hear that?" a voice called. One of the kidnappers who hadn't come to his room, but not the boss.

"Check it out," the boss's voice ordered, and footsteps ran down the corridor.

Heiji took a deep breath, then jumped out the window. Pain laced through him as a piece of glass stuck into his arm, but Heiji knew he couldn't remove it. He couldn't risk leaving a blood trail, not now.

Scanning his surroundings, Heiji noticed that he was surrounded by a forest. The car they had brought him in was parked in front of the building, but without the keys, it was useless. Best bet was to run into the forest. So that's what he did. Footsteps seemed to come from every direction, but Heiji squeezed his eyes shut and kept running, hoping they would fade into the distance. He didn't even know where he was going right now, just that he had to get away from those footsteps.

Kudo Shinichi would have had a better plan.

But Heiji was not Kudo Shinichi, so he had to do what he could do, which was keep running.

Finally, the exhaustion caught up to him, and he leaned on a tree, hoping to catch his breath. Sinking down to the ground, he panted as he listened carefully for footsteps.

He had barely been resting when he heard a voice. "Hattori Heiji, you did well so far. But I'm afraid not well enough."

Heiji froze. That voice belonged to the boss.

"We'll have to drag you back to your little cell," the boss continued.

"What do ya want from me?" Heiji growled.

Finally, the boss stepped in front of him. "We want your boyfriend to walk straight into our clutches."

Slowly, Heiji looked up, his blood turning to ice as he realized just who was standing in front of him.

His kidnappers weren't just culprits of some minor case he had dealt with, or culprits that Shinichi had dealt with. Yet, they had been locked away by Kudo Shinichi nonetheless.

Except a few, who had avoided capture. They were now some of Japan's most wanted criminals.

And this man who stood in front of him…

"Vodka," he whispered.

Vodka smirked. "I see you have finally recognized me."
