Prologue
Labour (Mine)
02:00am on a quiet Monday morning, Renee Swan went into early labour with her second daughter, waking up her husband Charlie Swan in a panic, starring at his wife in utter disbelief, once her words penetrated his foggy sleep addled brain he jumped into action, helping his wife clean the mess from her water breaking and changing her into fresh clothing all the whilst calling his best friend Billy Black.
By the time the Swans are ready with the new car seat and baby bag Billy was pulling into their drive way, the closest friend to the Swans, he was there to babysit little three year old Isabella whilst they were at the hospital, giving Billy a quick rundown of instructions to care for Isabella the Swans piled into the police cruiser and took off to the hospital.
A small three hours later Renee was told it was time to push, and so she did, with all her might and strength she pushed as hard as her body would allow and in another twenty minutes, on her final push their small beautiful youngest baby girl was handed over into a glowing mothers arms.
At 06:20am on Monday the 14th of January 1991 Tabitha Lilly Swan was born into this world, both of her proud parents couldn't stop looking at how beautiful she was as she lay cradled in her mother's arms, her father lying beside her mother, running his large calloused fingers down the baby's plump and rosy cheeks.
It was then that Charlie began to get a niggling feeling in the back of his head the longer he examined the baby held in his wife's arms, the baby girl who lay before him resembled his wife a fair bit, but he couldn't recognise any traits from him, not like he did when his little Isabella was born.
Isabella had always had porcelain skin, chocolate brown eyes and a set of brown straight hair, gazing upon his new daughter, he compared that Tabitha had slightly darker skin, darker brown eyes and even though she had brown tuffs of hair he could notice the slight curls skittering across the baby's head.
Shoving that thought to the back of his mind, he convinced himself that his wife would never cheat on him, she loved him and their small family they had created together, maybe as Tabitha aged her eyes and skin would lighten.
"Oh Charlie, she's so beautiful" Renee whispered in adoration as she sat snuggling the baby bundled in her arms, her face awestruck and filled with a tender love only a mother could hold for their daughter.
"That she is Renee, you done such a fantastic job baby; you are an amazing women, not just to give me one beautiful baby girl but two." Charlie whispered back tenderly, not wanting to startle their new daughter.
12:00pm that afternoon the Swans were discharged from the hospital, the doctors had examined both mother and baby declaring both extremely healthy, Charlie being the doting husband he is dutifully helped both his wife into the passenger seat before he secured Tabitha in her car seat in the back seat.
The drive was quiet as they made their way home, Renee dosing in and out of sleep, Tabitha lost in her own world of dreams and Charlie lost in his own head, thirty minutes later and the police chief was pulling into his own drive way, faintly registering Billy's wife Sarah's car parked on the road just a little bit up from their driveway.
Still not making a sound, the Swans together exited the car, Charlie murmuring to his wife to go in a rest up whilst he gathered the baby and the baby bag, which she tiredly and happily done.
By the time the police Chief had gathered everything, Billy and his wife Sarah where awaiting by the door to the Swans resident, both radiating happy smiles as their one year old son Jacob stood waiting at his mother's feet.
Making his way inside, the Black family followed inside, not a word said until Charlie placed Tabitha in her mum's arms and settling on the sofa beside her.
"So where is my muchkin?" Renee asks curiously, glancing around the room before her gaze lands on their friends, as exhausted as she is; she wants to see her little Bella.
"She is in the back yard with the twins; I will go gather the girls now." Sarah exclaims, jumping up from the opposite sofa and leaving the room, a hop in her step as she goes.
It wasn't long before the scuffling of children's feet are heard as well as the commotion the three children where making as they hurried inside to greet the new baby.
"Mamma!" Isabella exclaims loudly as her chocolate brown gaze lands on her mother, bounding towards them and tripping over her own little feet as she does, Sarah barely manages to catch her from falling on her face before Isabella is back on her feet and toddling to her parents.
Just before she could launch herself into her mum's already filled arms, Charlie leans forward, pulling his three year old daughter into his arms and settling her on his lap.
"Isabella muchkin, you have to be careful now, remember when we told you that you were getting a new sister? Well that's where I and your mother just came from, and whilst I or your mother is holding your new sister, you have to be very careful and gentle with her, now come say hello to your sister Tabitha." Charlie explained as gently as he could, not wanting to upset Isabella.
Isabella's face scrunched up in confusion until her brown eyes lands on the small baby laying in her mum's arms, she leans forward with the support of her father as she examines the sleeping child, taking in every detail, from the small wisps of curly brown hair, to the chubby cheeks, the long eye lashes and the tiny baby fingers curled in a fist under her chin, Isabella's face turned into disgust as she pulled back, struggling in her dads arms to be put down, once she is settled and steady on her feet she turned to look at her parents with a look if dismay.
"I don't like her, take her back!" Their three year old demanded, shocking both her mum and dad, Isabella has never shown this amount of dislike towards anything before.
"Muchkin, we can't just take her back, she is ours now, your little sister, she is ours to love and will be a part of our family from now on." Her mother says softly but with a stern tinge to her voice.
Isabella stamped her little feet on the floor, letting out a distress cry as she begun to sob.
"B-But I don't want a b-baby s-sister, I don't like her, please daddy, please give her away." As Charlie gazed down upon his daughter his heart ached whilst he watched tears stream down her face, seeing his child in distress was not a pleasant thing.
Sliding down from the sofa, he shuffled his way across the floor, gathering Isabella up into his arms, hugging her and comforting her.
"Shh Isabella, everything will be okay, I promise, once she has been here long enough you will get used to having her around, you will love her and you will be the best older sister." He murmured into her ears, her sobbing slowly dying in the comfort of her dads arms and soothing words.
The Black family who was gathered around the Swans as the scene unfolded before them remained quiet, smiles skittering across their faces, Billy and Sarah give each other a knowing look, after all they faced the same problems with their twins when there baby Jacob was born.
"Mummy, can we see the baby now? Please, please, please." The twins begged, the most adorable puppy looks upon their faces.
"If it is okay with uncle Charlie and Aunty Renee then of course you can, just remember to be gentle," Sarah lovingly says, her heart bubbling with joy as she watches her daughters puppy look turn on to their friends, with a chuckle and a nod of agreement from both Renee and Charlie, the twins slowly make their way over to Renee and Tabitha.
The four year old twins gathered around them, cooing and gushing about just how pretty Tabitha was, babbling about when they are older they will play dress up and Barbie's with the youngest Swan making the adults laugh at the sceptical they made, Isabella on the other hand still lay cradled in her dads loving arms, jealousy boiling inside the three year old girl as she glared at her sister.
Spotting one year old Jacob Black, standing beside his father, Charlie remembers that today is a very special day.
"Happy birthday Jacob." Charlie booms a little too loudly, startling everyone, except a sleeping Tabitha and a mesmerised Jacob, the rest of the adults zero in their gaze at the one year old, who was standing as still as a statue, his dark brown eyes staring at the baby in Renee's arms, he wasn't even blinking.
The room falls silent, the twins move away and Jacob who was always advanced for his age seemed to rejuvenate, his small body jolted, like a force was pulling him forward towards her, slowly but steadily Jacob toddled his way over to Renee and Tabitha, silently clambering up the sofa until his squished into Renee's side, leaning over as much as his little body would allow, his gaze not once leaving Tabitha's face.
His arm slowly stretched out, his chubby and sticky fingers gently grazed the baby's cheek, stirring her awake, Tabitha's eye lids open slowly, blinking a couple of times before they lock onto Jacobs brown eyes and something changes in the atmosphere, the air seems to thicken as something passes between the two babies.
Jacobs hand glides down until he wraps his chunky fingers around the fist of Tabitha, gently encasing her hand inside his, tearing his eyes away from hers for the first time, looking at his parent he says just one word.
"Mine." He declares, before his brown eyes falls back upon Tabitha who has already fallen back to sleep, except the hand that was clenched into a fist is now relaxed and tangled with Jacobs.
The four Adults looked at each other in shock, never before witnessing anything like the instant connection between the two children; it was a sight to behold and a story that would be told for many years to come.
