The sun rises, and the darkness fades into the light. Those who live in dark places are particularly sensitive to the sun's rays and will always be the first to notice when the sun rises. The cats who live in the cave are those such creatures. A clowder of cats that survive in the harsh wilderness and are owned by no one. They are referred to as "wild" or "feral" by the humans in the village. But to them and the other forest creatures, they prefer the name "Clan of the Cave".

In the human village, there are cats whose lifestyle is radically different from the cave cats. Rather than hunting for food, they are fed by the people. Instead of sleeping on the cave floor, they do so indoors in their own beds. And rather than being afraid of humans, they are their companions. The royal cat family that belonged to the Magistrate were an even more special kind of cat. They had extraordinary intelligence; they could read and write Chinese. Using their ability to write with their tails, they became the royal calligraphers to the Magistrate.

The two beautiful calligraphers had three kittens, each with their own goals in mind. The oldest, Dongwa, was not interested in becoming a scribe and chose to instead study martial arts so he could be a Kung-Fu warrior. The middle child, Sagwa, is studying to become a calligrapher in order to follow in her parents' footsteps. Being the youngest, Sheegwa hasn't made up her mind what she wants to do but she knows being a calligrapher like her parents isn't one of them. Together, the family lived happily together inside the palace with their many friends like Fu-Fu the bat or Shei-Hu the mouse.
