"Well that was fun."
Michael's best friend Morgan snorted next to him. "You and I have very different definitions of 'fun' my friend."
"Oh it wasn't that bad. It was actually very enlightening on how…"
"Aye, no!" Morgan stopped him. "Already heard it in there. Don't want to hear it again." She rolled her eyes, looking out at the school fair. "I can't believe you talked me into this."
Avengers Academy, the school Michael and Morgan went to, had been forced to shut down due to faculty problems. Many of the teachers there frequently left to do herowork and the substitutes weren't well-trained in that regard. It had been an ongoing problem for a while now. So now, the two of them had to find a new school, which was why they were at the hero school fair, where hero schools from across the world showed themselves off to prospective students while doing some scouting of their own. Michael had spotted S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy front and center. The X-Men's Krakoa school also had a big presence going on. He was pretty sure he saw Pixie and Nightcrawler over there. There were other ones as well, such as the Russians, the Atlas Academy, and even Doctor Doom's University for Higher Learning. For some reason, the last one had a sizeable crowd checking it out.
But none of these interested Michael. His eyes were trained on the schools on the right-hand side of the room. Specifically one school.
U.A. High School.
"I still don't see why we're here," Morgan complained to him. "Like most of our class, we have spots ready for us at S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy."
"Yeah, but it's still a good idea to check out some of the other schools. Just in case, you know."
"A pointless idea, but whatever. At least they have plenty of food. Excuse me while I check out the buffet table." She marched right over to the dessert section, grabbing three cupcakes with one hand.
Michael felt his stomach flop as he looked over at the U.A. High School stand. For the first time, the school was opening up its doors to foreign students, increasing its admittance numbers for the hero course as well. Ever since he had learned that, he had planned for this moment. When he would walk up to the people there and submit himself for recommendation. But now, that moment was here. And he was rooted to the spot.
Come on, he said to himself. You can do this.
It was funny. When fighting bad guys, he had nerves of steel. When approaching a school, his nerves felt like butter.
The worst they can do is reject you, he reminded himself and then felt worse. Because that was what he was really afraid of. Them rejecting him.
But if you don't try, you'll always fail, he heard his father's voice in his head. Now he nodded. He had to at least try.
Slowly, he took a step forward and then another, just one foot in front of the other. But, when he was only a few yards away, one of the people in the U.A. stand, a blonde, spiky-haired man with a punk rock outfit and what looked like a speaker around his head, suddenly stood up and shouted out loud, "ARE YOU READY?"
Michael winced at the loud voice but there were plenty of people who cheered.
"LET ME INTRODUCE THE ONE AND ONLY U.A. HIGH SCHOOL FOR CONSIDERATION!"
Behind him, a projector came to life, showing an image of a glass building in the shape of an H.
"MY NAME IS PRESENT MIC, PRO HERO AND TEACHER AT U.A. HIGH SCHOOL. HERE AT U.A., WE OFFER AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK INTO HEROWORK WITH TRAINING IN BOTH COMBAT AND RESCUE SITUATIONS ON TOP OF REGULAR CLASSES. WE HAVE STATE OF THE ART FACILITIES BUILT TO TEST OUR STUDENTS FOR THESE EXACT SITUATIONS."
The images showed off more of the campus, such as a small city, factory, forest, and other such training grounds. Michael had already seen all these from his research online. No, he didn't need any encouragement to sign up for the school.
"How did I let him talk me into this?"
For a split second, Michael thought Morgan had returned. But no, it couldn't be her. Because the voice hadn't been that of a teenage girl but a grown man. Michael turned and his eyes widened as he saw the man next to him. A man in a black outfit with wild, messy hair and what looked like bandages around his neck.
Shota Aizawa. Also known as Eraser Head.
"Mr. Aizawa," Michael breathed out, causing the pro hero to glance over at him. "Uh…it's an honor to meet you. My name is-"
"Yes I know who you are," the man cut him off. "I recognized you the second you walked in. Michael Rogers, son of Steve Rogers aka Captain America and Sharon Carter aka Agent 13. Top student at Avengers Academy and leader of Class D. Ready to be transferred to S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy to continue your training."
"Oh, uh, hi," Michael said, unsure of what else to say.
"Which is why it's curious to find you here. With a person of your reputation, one might think that your academic and hero career were all set up for you, just ready for you to walk down it. And yet, here you are, looking at other schools. I wonder why that is."
In the background, Michael could still hear the voice of Present Mic go on about the opportunities U.A. provided but his whole focus was now on the person standing in front of him.
"I…" he stuttered for a second before taking a breath and restarting. "I wanted to submit my application for U.A. High School."
He thought he saw Aizawa's eyes widen a fraction but he couldn't be sure. "Why? Do you think a foreign market will boost your reputation? Your popularity, perhaps?"
"No, I-"
"I have been following your career like most top young heroes, especially the children of such famous ones. You've had everything handed to you on a silver platter. You only had to share your name to get accepted into Avengers Academy, had everyone elect you as class representative, and immediately became leader of your team. You put no work or effort into anything, all because your father is Captain America."
Michael felt himself shrink as the man talked. He was right. Everything had come so easily to him. He hadn't done really anything impressive in his life. But that was the reason he wanted this so badly.
"I know all that, which is why…" he tried again but was interrupted.
"So if you think you can just apply to U.A. and get accepted, you're in for a rude awakening. You'll have to pass the entrance exam like everyone else. Of course, you'll still get it easier with a recommendation-"
"I don't want a recommendation!"
That stopped him. Aizawa blinked and this time Michael knew he had caught him by surprise. Before the man could interrupt again, Michael kept going.
"Everything you said is true. I have had it too easy. Because of…who my dad is, I didn't have to work for anything. But that's why I want to go to U.A. High School. Because I have to work for it. I don't want the easy route. I want to prove that I can do this, that I can be a hero. And I've also done my homework with you. I know how hard you are on your students. I want that. I don't want special treatment. I just want…I just want to be the best hero I can be."
Aizawa stared at him for a long minute, making Michael assess, reassess, and re-reassess everything he'd just said.
"Hmmm," he finally said. "So you don't want a recommendation?"
Michael blinked in surprise that that was the question. "Uh…no, sir. I want to pass the normal entrance exam. Honestly I'd prefer if I was admitted as Michael Carter. I-I'd prefer if people didn't know who my dad was."
"Because people will judge you? Or because people will go easy on you?"
"Uh…a little of both I guess."
"In this world, you can't help people judging you. Especially as a hero. You'll always be measured up to others. And with your father being who he is, you'll be under a lot more scrutiny like your sister was."
Michael sighed. His sister, Samantha, had put up with a lot when she emerged as a hero. People constantly wondering if she had what it took to bear the name and legacy of such an iconic hero. She had quickly shut all that down with her actions, now leading the Young Avengers as the Libertarian. An icon of her own.
And another thing for Michael to live up to.
"I know that," he admitted. "But, right now, I really just want to be judged based on who I am. If you can't let me apply as Michael Carter because-"
"Of course you can."
"Huh?"
"Nothing in the rules that says you can't use your maiden name," Aizawa sniffed. "I'm just warning you, the judging will happen in your life whether you like it or not. Delaying it now won't change anything."
"I know," Michael nodded.
"But you're correct about me not going easy on you. I don't go easy on anyone." Aizawa gave him a hard stare. "You surprised me. Not many people do that."
"Oh, uh, thanks."
"I assume you already have your application form filled out."
"Oh, yes." Michael hurriedly pulled out the folded piece of paper from his pocket and handed it over. Aizawa looked it over, nodding, before putting it away.
"Very well then. I guess I'll be seeing you in one week for the entrance exam. I hope you're up for it."
Michael gulped and nodded. "Yes sir."
"AND THAT CONCLUDES OUR PRESENTATION! THANK YOU ALL FOR JOINING US TODAY AND IF INTERESTED PLEASE STEP RIGHT UP FOR ANY QUESTIONS!"
"I suppose that's my cue," Aizawa muttered before walking off.
Michael couldn't help but smile as he watched the man leave. It was happening. It was really happening. He was going to U.A. High School. Well, to the entrance exam at least. But he knew he would beat that. He was finally going to prove himself.
"Hey!"
He jumped a little as Morgan materialized next to him, her hands laden with food.
"I got you a brownie," she told him.
"Oh, thanks," he said, taking the dessert.
"So, can we leave now?"
"Uh, yeah. I, uh, did what I came to do so, yeah we can leave."
Morgan frowned. "What does that mean, did what you came to do? What did you come to do? I thought we were just looking?"
Michael winced but there was no turning back now. "Well, um, I sort of, kind of, submitted my application to U.A."
He grimaced as he saw the shock bloom across Morgan's face. "Why would you do that?" she asked. "Our spots at S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy are guaranteed. I mean, I get that U.A. is one of the top schools in the world, but why would you risk leaving a secured school for one you don't know you'll get?"
"Because I don't know," he told her. "Because I'm not sure they'll just let me in."
Morgan just stared back at him. "Huh?"
"Morgan, haven't you noticed how easy we've gotten it. I mean, we didn't even to need to pass an exam to get into Avengers Academy or S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy. We got in because of our dads. And, I don't want that to keep happening. I need to prove that I can make it as a hero on my own. Don't you?"
A sympathetic look came into her eyes. "Not really," she told him. "I mean, I've never felt like I needed to prove myself to anyone. I'm Tony Stark's daughter, so what? I don't have time to wonder what people think of me. I just want to do what I do best. Invent awesome stuff and save the day. And maybe look amazing while doing it."
Michael smiled a little. "That's great. But I don't have that mentality. I…I need this, Morgan."
Morgan took his hands in hers, squeezing them. "Alright then," she said. "Guess I better write up my application too then."
Michael blinked. "Wait, no, you don't have to do that. That's not what-"
"Hush!" she stopped him with a finger. "You're probably going to say something annoyingly noble and totally on brand for you about why I shouldn't do this, so let me just say that you're my best friend. Since we were toddlers, we've been friends. So there's no way I'm not going with you. That clear?"
Michael nodded and couldn't help but smile a little. "Perfectly."
"Good. Now where's the moron who was shouting earlier. Ah, there he is." She walked over to the U.A. stand and started talking with Present Mic. Michael watched her and felt even more relief. He had been hoping she'd come with him. He hadn't wanted to put any pressure on her to join, but he was so glad she had. He didn't know how he would be able to do it without her.
Now he just had to figure out how to tell his parents.
Hello all and welcome to my new story. Yeah, I binged My Hero Academia a few months back and then just had to write them into so many stories. This is the first. I was inspired by other work I'd seen but wanted to do something a little different. I liked the idea of the children of Marvel heroes being a part of it and then I came up with Michael Rogers, the son of Captain America, trying to live up to his father's name kind of like how Izuku Midoriya is trying to live up to All Might. Well, once I thought it up, I couldn't not do it. So here we are.
I am so excited for this story. The rest of it will come out a little later cause I'd like to get a good portion done before I submit it (the first season really) but I'm writing as fast as I can alongside everything else. I'm also excited to bring in Morgan Stark cause she's so much fun to write. (Hint: you won't guess who her mom is).
Please leave a review if you can and let me know what you think and stay tuned for more updates.
