"Usako? I'm ho-"

Mamoru stopped in his tracks when he walked into his kitchen and came face to face with an ugly troll monster squatting on his counter.

Actually, the term "face" was quite generous.
But "troll" was quite accurate.

This thing was lumpy and misshapen, so brown it was almost black, and covered in what he assumed was bright green slime.

"Mamo-chan?" Her voice came from the general vicinity of their bedroom. "Welcome home! How was work?"

Mamoru turned his head towards Usagi's voice, leaving his eyes fixed on the grotesque before him. "It was fine- So, uh… What's this on the counter?"

There was a short beat before she answered. "Oh! You mean the cake?"

An eyebrow twitched.

"Yea, the cake," he responded with far more calm than he felt. "Tell me about it."

"Well, it's just a simple dark chocolate cake, I know how much you love chocolate."

His stomach roiled.
Yes, he does, but…

"The, uh, frosting is very… bright," he managed.

"Isn't though?" Suppressing the urge to jump when her arms wrapped around him from behind, he relaxed by the time she pressed her chest to his back. "I was going to try practicing piping flowers like Mako-chan taught me, but I think I added too much cream to the frosting because it's a bit runny, and I ran out of powdered sugar so I couldn't try to fix it. Still tastes good though."

Turning him around, she tugged him down by the lanyard he forgot to remove when he left the hospital and gave him a light kiss. "Still very sweet," she murmured.

"Hmmm," he hummed against her lips before settling a hand into her hair to pull her back in for a deeper kiss.

Just as he was about to guide her to their bedroom and away from the cake, she broke the kiss and smiled her brightest smile.

"Want to try a slice before dinner?"

She settled him down before the low table in their living room with the promise she'll be right back. His smile fell the moment she was gone, and he began to pray to any food gods that may still or someday exist for his stomach survive the upcoming trial.

"Here! I gave you a small piece so you won't spoil your dinner."

The plate she set down before him had one of the largest slices of cake he'd ever eaten.

"Thank you, Usa," he said. "Looks-" he cleared his throat -"looks great."

Rewarded with another bright smile, Usagi began to happily dig into her own cake slice, closing her eyes and savoring the bite.

When she didn't immediately start choking, Mamoru carved out a small chunk for himself and took a tentative bite. After chewing thoroughly and swallowing, he raised a hand in front of his face.

Well, it passed the first test.
He didn't go blind.

So, he went in for another bite, a little larger this time.

And, as he mulled it around his mouth, he made the following deductions.

The texture of the frosting was definitely off, and the cake was edging ever so slightly towards burnt.

But it really wasn't bad.

Honestly, it was probably one of the best desserts Usagi has ever baked.

"This was the first time you made this cake, right?" he asked.

Usagi swallowed her giant bite before answering. "Yup! Well, first time without Mako-chan helping me." Her eyes fell to the crumbs on her place. "Is it OK?"

"Usako, it's the best thing you've ever baked."

Her eyes twinkled as her smile stretched across her face. "Really?"

His smile and response were genuine.

"Absolutely."
